So I don't have to go to a bar and be surrounded by redneck skins fans?
-
The only problem I can think of is: What kind of system to they play in? Is Bowers a 3-4 DE or a OLB. Call me shell shocked from Maybin, but if that is the case, I'd be scared to waste a top 5-10 pick on someone who has to learn a new system and position again. Now, I could see if one of these DT's would be a DE as that transition appears to be easier. I'd say go for the OT since this draft is weak, but if we pick top 5, that kids going to want some money.
-
Really?
Is anyone being disrespectful here? The title in all caps was a bit much, but I can't say that I didn't think the same thing for a moment. On a fan board, I hope to get reminded of the good stuff. Even if that's only a field goal from a game where we get blown out 51-3.
No one is saying they aren't appreciative.

Steve Johnson lost this game. Plain and simple. No fault to anyone else.
1st or 4th receiver, there is no excuse for what he did on the field
-
We do not want to win this game. Johnson tip pick, mckelvin trip, Johnson drop, and a sack
-
Yes, but if we go 8-8 wouldn't that show that we don't need as many players as we think? I don't think they will but that means we will have won 8 in a row and beaten Pit, NYJ, NE...etc.
Oh, absolutely. But even if that happened, I still think we'd have the big needs at RT and OLB. Even in our wins, they have been fairly close and those positions have shown a glaring weakness that we've been able to overcome. Now, I'm not going to pretend to say that an OLB is the only answer to our horrible run D, but it seems like a start.
I'm saying this because I don't want us to be a wild card team, I want us to be a contender. The team that ends the game at halftime. And for that, we atleast need those two positions and an upgrade at QB who doesn't make those mistakes that Fitz promises to make 2-3 times a game. Nothing against Fitz again, but he is a wildcard QB, not a Superbowl QB.

I feel bad for Childress. I think this is one of those situations where the players won.
-
interesting POV.
The only thing I'd say is that I think the FO has made it quite clear with the Kelsay extension that they don't give a damn about what the fans or media think
-
8-8 and still find a way to trade for Luck.
-
Played well, yes.
Played to his contract? Hellz no

I completely agree. And like I said, I don't know why this is so different for me. I think that it's just everywhere for this kid. Not the normal pre-draft hype after the season is over. This kid was talked about after week 2 and continues to impress every week. You can also see the way that the media talk about him. He just seems to have it.
Yes, he may blow up and be a dud. He could be the next Ryan Leaf. But we have not had a franchise QB since Kelly retired and i'm sorry, but Fitz isn't that guy. Sure, he'll do while we put the other pieces together. But man, I think Luck is the best prospect since Matt Ryan.
In all seriousness, not to call you out for your examples, but they all had their knocks coming out. I remember partially wanting all of them and really picking them apart. But asides for his limited college career, I can't say that i've heard a single bad thing about him.
The arm, the brain, the size, all of it. I mean, just look at the franchises that dominate right now. Who did they all really build around? The Colts, Pats, Falcons, Packers. The QB's are centerstones for them and they got there first.
Again, i'm not trying to pick a fight here nor be disrepectful. Nor do I want to come off like someone who instantly wants us to trade the draft away for someone just because I've heard of him.
I watch a lot of drafts and follow the sport in a way that's probably unhealthy. And i'm just saying that Luck is a different prospect that I think would seriously change the face of the Bills.

How did we get here...
-
I'm not saying that we don't have other holes. But, if you can honestly tell me that you wouldn't sacrifice a few wins in a season where you weren't going to make the playoffs for a legit chance at a guy who could very well be an elite qb, then we have to agree to disagree.
Could Luck be a bust? Sure. And usually I don't pretend to know how people will pan out. But there is something about that kid that makes me okay with not winning to set ourselves up for future years.
Also, I think that between RT and OLB, we have two holes that can be filled with picks 2-7 and FA. I'm not overlooking them.
-
I'll never understand why people are so fixated on Luck when the Bills are playing better. Actually I do understand. It's a belief that one player is the magic fix for this franchise.
PTR
I'm not saying this to knock Fitz, but if you had a top 10 qb under center, I think we are a 5-5 team atleast right now. That's why I personally put so much belief in one player.

The best predictor of winning next year is winning this year. don't believe me? Compare the records of teams in year A and compare them to year B. Does winning in year A correlate better with wining in year B, or does losing enough to get the #1 or #2 draft pick correlate better with winning in year B? What about year C?
If you don't think the Bills are smart enough to find an impact player at #2, #4, #9, #10, etc, what makes you think they will make the right decision at #1. The "lose to get a better draft pick" crowd is made up (I believe) of people who have essentially given up. People with no hope. People who lack vision.
Regardless of what I want for the team, I still got excited watching the last two games and was pissed off during the previous three. However, I really wanted the Bills to get the first pick, not because I've given up, but because I think that if Luck declares, we would have had a player on our team for atleast 10 years to come. I think Luck has the brains and arm of Manning, and the legs and toughness of Roethlesberger.
So yeah, I love the team, but i'm thinking big picture. The sense of pride I'd feel even going 8-8 this year wouldn't compare to the decade of quality qb play with Luck behind center.
-
To get to the point:
I'm going to assume the Bills end up with a top 5 pick. Let's just say it's number 5 overall. If they wanted to trade up to the number one spot, what would they need to give up?
For me, if Luck comes out. I would trade our 1st and 3rd this year, and our 1st next year. Would that do it?
And for those who think i'm insane, I truly believe that we are a QB, RT, and LB away from being over the hump and we would have Luck, a second rounder for either RT/LB, and the later rounds and FA for anything else.

If you vote for me as MOD, I promise to make sure that everyone gets a fair portion of Tots in the lunch line.
If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true.

I don't care if throws for 10,000 yards in the first half, that POS doesn't deserve anything but more jail time

Good post.
My thoughts is that the new CBA would not be retroactive and therefor only apply to rookie classes in 2012 and beyond.
My other concern is for someone like Luck. Let's say we draft him and there is a lockout for the whole season, then ends in January.what would stop a player from not wanting to sign then, to re-enter the draft with hopes of going to another team?
Again, just thoughts
-
I agree with what everyone is saying for the most part.
Again though, my concern is that I don't really see our talent developing on the field from week to week. Yes, our offense has gotten better with Fitz in there. But from his first game on, have we seen growth from him? I personally don't think so.
I think to develope into a legit playoff contender, you need to see glimpses of greatness in seasons like this, and I can't really pick out a player who shows that. I see players show glimpses of holding their own, but nothing more.
I don't know...
-
I still remember a few years back where we went 3-13 because we had absolutely no expectations of that team. Each of the 3 wins were considered a bonus while we got to watch our young players develope and kept thinking positively about the leap we made next year.
But as I'm hearing all the recent talks about the teams who made the jump last year from worst to first and who would do it next year, I started to really think about the Bills season. And as I think about each game, especially the last 3 games, I have to ask myself: Are we really getting better?
Besides Steve Johnson and Bell, who is also showing the ability to get injured consistently, is there a player that we are seeing any form of improvement to the next level? The 3-4 defense, which we drafted and acquired FA's for, are now being switched back and forth with the 4-3.
I don't really know what the answer I'm looking to tell myself is. I just don't know why I have any reason to be more optimistic about next year than I do now. I mean yeah, if we can bring in a QB, RT, and LB's in the offseason, that would be a difference maker. But the difference from 0-16 to the playoffs?

Offensive Line and linebacker
- Fitz was NOT the problem today......he converts 3rd downs and makes this offense actually look NFL caliber. While he throws a bad ball her and there we also have WR's who DROP balls that hit them in the hands still. Also....he was under duress all game.
- I support D. Bell.....but he got his @ss handed to him today....he really did.
Sorry, but I couldn't disagree with you more. Fitz is absolutely the reason we lost today. Besides the fluke extra point.
His two interceptions were horrible throws at a time when the game should have been put away. He also missed a wide open long TD to Nelson in the final 6 minutes. You can't ask a guy to be perfect, I get that. But there were 3 very specific plays, where any average QB in the league would have made those throws, and the Bills win.
I'm not a Fitz basher and he is our best choice right now. But he lost this game.

There are two things that tell me there is no way in the world that this kid will be a Bill
Sophomore
and Bills luck
Mallett is the only guy I see on this team - otherwise, hello DT
My question is though, who would you take? Who would be worthy of that pick over Luck?
I believe in veteran QBs and solid Defense. I haven't seen enough of Luck's games to really be 100% confident how I feel, but I know that in the few games I have seen I had concerns about his ability to throw deep. I don't want the next Chad Pennington (even a mobile version) any more than I want the next Drew Bledsoe (i.e. Mallett).
I'd rather focus on dominating players for the front 7.
So your recommendation would be who then?
-
In my years on this board, I don't think I've ever seen such a consensus around a player to be drafted by the Bills. Even if you are a Fitz fan, Luck still seems to be the choice if he declares. So with that, I ask this to anyone who DOESN'T want to draft him.
The question, if Luck declares and we have the first pick, what is your alternative decision. I'm not asking to bash. I'm asking to hear about different opinions.
