Why in the hell would Miami want to trade that guy?  I've hated playing against him...he seems to be the one Fin who shows up against Buffalo.

Good question.  He has the 2nd highest cap hit on the team ($10M), but the Dolphins have $17M of cap space

If they want to go with Sweeney and Morris if they can trade Howard it's less about what they get back than it is clearing $2M off the salary cap (or something like that) which would be dead money if they cut him.  That additional money can be used to sign a street FA, make a mid-season trade for a more expensive veteran, or just rolled into next year when they need to resign several key guys.

Just a note that if they trade Howard and his $1.95M salary, but keep Sweeney on the roster, he adds $0.895M so the net gain is only ~$1M

Edit: I missed that Howard's $.255M roster bonus is a per-game, so it's actually $2.25M savings on a trade, less whatever salary the player who replaces him carries.

i was thinking of a different hit when he was basically sitting on his butt before getting drilled in the head-might have been the Texans Zach Cunningham- can't find a video

Kiko Alonso/Miami was one of them - Alonso dove over him as he slid but then kicked his leg up and clobbered Josh in the face with it.

That got 3 players (two MIA, one Bill) ejected as the entire Bills OL was down there taking offense to it.

Pretty sure there have been a handful more

Josh has been running his entire 4 year career. We have tons of tape of him running.

We have tape of him juking defenders out of their shoes (multiple times) to avoid hits. We have tape of him leaping over defenders (multiple times) to avoid hits. We have tape of him trucking defenders and turning them into rag dolls (multiple times) to be the hitter and avoid hits. And of course we have a ton of tape where he gets down and slides to avoid the hit.

I cant think of a single running instance where he took a big hit, or a bad hit, or even a hit that made me wince a little. Not one.

C'mon man - either you have a highly selective memory, or you're somehow re-defining "running instance", or That's Sarcasm

If you didn't wince at those, or consider those serious hits, I don't know what to tell you.

You can make an argument about injury risk running vs. standing in the pocket, but let's not pretend that Josh hasn't taken some scary hits.

I think it was rookie year when he slid and got drilled in the head by a Patriot-no call of course

He didn't slide.  He was being tackled as a runner, and a 2nd Patriot slammed him helmet to helmet.  It was called as a personal foul penalty, but as always - the opposing defense gives up some yards and a first down, but our QB got knocked out of the game with concussion and was questionable in the protocol the following week.

this is such a great question. I wonder if such stats exist. I would like to know the answer to this. My guess is that most injuries happen to QB's in a collapsing pocket rather than run. Only because QB's who will take chances to scramble and run are fewer than pocket passers....basically more opportunities for injury to  QB's behind the line of scrimmage   than run. Do you agree? What do you think?

    Good article here

    https://www.fantasypoints.com/nfl/articles/season/2021/mobile-quarterbacks-and-injury-rates

However, bear in mind that a QB being hit in the pocket has the protection of "roughing the passer" calls, while a QB outside the pocket is essentially a running back who can be picked up and slammed to the ground and gang-tackled.

Acute injury is not the only concern; cumulative wear-and-tear on the body is what seems to degrade the performance of RBs going into their 30's.

Yeah I had high hopes for Sweeney also. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out. Some setbacks for him didn’t help.

In some ways it's kinda like this is year 2 for him but, it's actually year 4

I could just be jaded because I'd really really like to see the Bills upgrade at TE, but I just don't think we did.  Maybe I'm too negative about Howard because I hoped he'd be That Guy.

id feel more comfortable with keeping Knox and Howard and having Gilliam as the 3rd man on game days. He also plays FB and is a special teamer as well. Someone that actually gets use out of multiple positions. He will dress almost every single game.

Gilliam will most definitely dress every single game he's not on injury report.  He did last year (16/17 games).

you can probably stash at least one of Sweeney and Morris on the PS.

I'm thinking Morris would be an easy PS stash.  I don't think we'd have teams lining up to grab Sweeney, but I think the rules are more restrictive again about how many experienced players can be stashed.  PS rules still make my head hurt, but I think Sweeney counts as 2 accrued seasons for PS purposes.

To my hearing, he came very close to that.  Stuff about how they need to look at every aspect of the draft evaluation process both physical attributes and intangibles, and figure out what needs to change, and he takes responsibility.

Each morning on their way to practice, the Buffalo Bills were greeted by a large banner hanging off the back of the stands at their training camp facility.

Emblazoned in large red letters on a blue backdrop were the words: "Find A Way."

It was a phrase quarterback Josh Allen used during his camp-opening news conference, and repeated by others to reflect a team that’s made great strides in reaching the playoffs in four of five years since coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane took over, while still falling short of its desired destination.

    https://www.foxnews.com/sports/bills-using-josh-allens-find-a-way-mission-statement-upcoming-nfl-season

It's a phrase Josh used in his news conference, but it's something Sean McDermott told the team (and kind of made an unofficial team motto) during the 2020 season where gyms and training facilities were closed, OTAs were abbreviated, no preaseason games etc.

I think the point that we're all trying to make here, is that we don't need the Josh Allen designed QB sweep on a random 2nd & 4 from our own 28 yard line

I'm all for him scrambling on designed pass plays, as well as designed runs in the red zone.

But it's this ridiculous other stuff outside those areas (where he invariably takes bigger hits, it seems) that has to be significantly reduced in our offense

I don't need our generational QB carrying the ball, when a highly effective (and replaceable) RB can do the job

"I'm Brandon Beane, and I Endorse This Message"

The question I have is whether Beane has truly provided sufficient increase in OL effectiveness and the right RBs to Make It So.

I still kind of feel that the Bills Brain Trust wants Champagne OL protection on a Beer budget.

Thanks for posting though he said little revelatory and reading in-between the lines, I came up with nothing.

Except maybe this: he's not committed to avoiding Josh running the ball.  If the situation requires it, he'll call some QB runs.

Sal Maiorana captured some of the things I heard.    This is reading between the lines.

Basically: OJ Howard is not a lock to make the team and Dorsey seems to indicate that he defers final decisions on offensive personnel.

    Quote

“I think O.J. has been doing a heck of a job and those three guys are all working their tail off and really putting them in a position to make things very tough on all the decision makers here,” offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said Tuesday.

Translation: Howard is not a lock to make the team, and Dorsey can make an argument for Sweeney and Morris

Sal calls the question.  If OJ has been doing a heck of a job then why...

    Quote

With Knox missing the game due to the death of his brother, the assumption was that Howard would start in his place. He didn’t. Morris played five of the six snaps on the opening drive, Allen’s only one, and Sweeney and fullback/tight end Reggie Gilliam also played one snap on that possession.

    Dorsey has this to say:

    Quote

“Honestly, it’s just the way it panned out and the way the game was called in that first drive,” Dorsey said of Howard’s absence. “We were trying to mix and match guys and give them opportunities in different personnel groupings, so just based off of that one drive … the personnel groupings that were called weren’t O.J.’s.”
    ........
“It’s no fault of O.J.’s, it’s just the way the game was honestly called,” Dorsey said.

    As Sal points out:

    Quote

Sorry, but that seems like a problem. If he’s supposed to be the backup tight end who you’ve committed more than $3 million in salary to, why wouldn’t he be involved in those personnel groupings unless he hasn’t earned those reps?

There were a couple of other interesting things.  For example, Dorsey asserts that all 3 of the RBs can operate in different areas - between the tackles, outside the tackles, in the passing game.  Now I dunno.  But it seemed as though last year, Moss and Singletary just didn't have the speed to get outside.

No, it’s not…sorry bro, but Coach pretty much nailed it.

Well, you know what they say about opinions

Cody Ford did not throw 2 interceptions in the 3rd

Cody Ford did not fumble on the Jax 37 yd line in the 4th

The Bills committed 12 penalties for 118 yds.  Cody Ford was responsible for 1 - 10 yd penalty so 11 for 108 yds did not involve Cody Ford

Why are ppl against Josh running?

It was extremely effective,  especially in the Red Zone.

He's definitely going to keep designed runs. It's a big reason why this O is so deadly

People are against Josh running as much as he does, especially on designed runs, because it's treating him like a running back.

Running backs have some of the shortest lifespans as effective NFL players because of the constant contact and hard hits they take.

Running QBs traditionally have shorter effective careers.

It's one thing when Josh scrambles and can choose to slide or to get out of bounds.  That arguably results in less hits than standing in the pocket.

It's another thing when the Bills call multiple designed QB runs for him

It's a worse thing yet, if Josh is basically the Bills only option to mount an effective running game because the OL and the backs can't get 'er done.

Been seeing those comments about Dorsey all camp but not really any evidence to go with it, I'm beginning to suspect this may be an elaborate prank coming from someone who likes the numbers 7 and 1.

Imma go with "where there's smoke, there's fire"

I don't think you hear Josh, Mitch Morse, and Gabe Davis all describe this (AND McDermott imposing a "large fine" for any coaches who get penalized) if there's not some basis.

I assume this article is part of the "comments all camp" you're referencing?

    Quote

“Dorsey just wants to attack every single play,” Davis said. “He doesn’t want to let up on anything. And that’s the biggest thing. I’m happy that he’s going to give us a lot of opportunities to go out there and make big plays. And that’s what you need too, because not every game is going to be your best game.”

What players do know about Dorsey’s demeanor is that he’s ultra-competitive and shares Daboll’s philosophy on offense that the Bills are going to do anything and run anything they need to to win. On the sideline, Dorsey’s calm and cool demeanor sometimes gives way to a different version of the coach. Not many players have seen it and most don’t want to, Bills center Mitch Morse said. Davis joked that’s why Dorsey needs to be up in the coach’s box.

“He’s such a nice guy. He’s a brilliant football coach. But he’s just so competitive,” Morse said. “The best way you can describe it is the Holy Spirit can come out of him and you don’t know when it’s gonna come out. … I mean, absolutely killer competitor. It’s kind of fun to see him blow his top every once a while but it comes from a good place. It’s never malice. It’s just he wants us to succeed so badly.”

I think the plan with Po is very much to wait. Ed Oliver will be the #1 priority next offseason. Then Knox, Edmunds and Gabe.

But the top 51 are not all making the roster. There are some easy moves. Haack was the first of those.

The top 51 are not all making the roster, but then guys who are lower down and currently not counted move up and take their space.

We will currently need to have cap space for 54 guys because Boettger gets paid his full salary on PUP.

My conclusion is we'd have about $2M in cap space (not including PS, if they have to be included)

I had a try at detailing that all out if you want to have a look:

    Allen

    Keenam

    RB - 5

    Singletary

    Cook
    Moss

    White

    Jackson

    Johnson

    Elam

    Benford

    Neal - ST

    S - 4

    Hyde

    Poyer

    Johnson

    Hamlin

    Your thoughts

So I'm gonna take a bit of a different angle - looking at the salary cap

I think this is a pretty good starting place, actually.  Changes (indicated in red above)

    1) Blackshear -> PS, Gilliam counted as an RB (FB) per Dorsey interview

    2) Morris added as a 3rd TE.  I personally think we might see an OJ Howard trade and keep Morris and Sweeney, but, unsure so I kept Howard and Morris for now

    3) Ford traded and replaced by Bobby Hart (sorry guys)

So now, let's look at which guys who are in the top-51 currently would be gone:

    Andre Smith (suspension) - $0.363M (6/17 of $1.03M)

    Duke Johnson (cut)           -   0.920M

Greg Van Roten (cut)         -   0.895M

    Jordan Miller (cut)              -  0.965M

    Cam Lewis (cut)                 -0.895M

    Matt Barkley (cut)              -0.920M

Current top-51 cap space per Spotrac: $4.156M

Added by the above cuts:                       $4.958M

Now we have to look at the next 8 guys who will now count in the 53 man roster:

    Tommy Doyle $0.825M

    Tyrel Dodson $0.895M

    Dane Jackson $0.825M

    Damar Hamlin $0.895M

    Khalil Shakir  $0.705

    Matt Araiza $0.705

    Christian Benford $0.705

    Isaiah Hodgins $0.705

    Quintin Morris $0.705

(Ike Boettger won't count against the roster, but his salary will still be paid and will count against the cap, so we will have 54 players counting against the cap)

Need to subtract from our cap space: $6.965M

Estimated cap space remaining on the 53 man roster: $2.15M

I give up on understanding whether or not the team needs to include the practice squad this year and how many people can be on it.

I googled.  But, if it's 16 players and we're relatively evenly split between rookies, players with more than 2 years experience, and players who draw the maximum pay, we would need something like $4.17M for the practice squad.

If we were to trade OJ Howard and keep Tommy Sweeney on the roster, that would save $1.98M for Howard and cost $0.965M for Sweeney, so save $1M

Beane has said in the past that he likes to go into the season with ~$3-5M to cover any need to sign injury replacements.  So he's gotta find a couple of million somewhere.

    3. Anyone knowing (not necessarily executing, but knowing) their assignment was a leg up on Ford in most cases. Boettger, I think he knows his assignments and tries to execute and sometimes succeeds, hence JAG.

I could entirely be wrong, but I didn't think the problem was usually Ford not knowing his assignment.  He just had sloppy technique with his hands and slow feet, so he got beat regularly.
