What escapes most Bills fans and some NFL coaches it seems... is how a rookie QB is developed in his first year in the NFL. I can't overstate how important it is to a rookie QB to have a veteran NFL QB on the roster to help guide that rookie QB through his first season. To have a qualified NFL QB coach to help guide him in his first season. To have an NFL qualified offensive coordinator to help guild him in his first NFL season. EJ had none of those!

No veteran QB on the roster

No NFL QB coach with that 2013 Buffalo staff

No NFL OC with previous NFL experience on the staff

One of the worst offensive lines in the NFL that season

EJ had some veteran QB help during the OTA's, pre season and that ended when Kevin Kolb met that rubber mat that ended his NFL career!  Besides that who even then who knows how helpful Kolb was to any of the QBs on the roster that year.

Bills fans need to understand that EJ was a rookie QB, Jeff Tuel was an undrafted free agent rookie QB that year and Thaddeus Lewis was basically a rookie with only one game in Cleveland (32 attempts) in 2012. So that 2013 Buffalo Bills opening day roster had 3 rookie QBs on it with no real starting experience.

Three rookie QBs, no QB coach and Nathaniel Hackett as his OC who came straight from college and was never previously an NFL offensive coordinator. Is it any wonder why EJ failed?

Kinda like this year with Nathaniel Peterman as the starter and one game under his belt from the year and Josh Allen as the only QB's on the roster for the first six games.

The way I look at it 2014 was more like what his rookie season should been with veteran QB Kyle Orton on the roster, and an actual NFL QB coach. Then Marrone benching EJ after a bad performance against the Texans week 4. This after asking EJ to throw 44 times vs 23 runs. That season was a clusterfluck on offense with Fred Jackson missing games, CJ Spiller missing games and when the team did run it was 70% of the time right up the middle with Hackett calling plays.

Just to give fans and idea how bad that Bills O line was that year. In week 16 against the Raiders with a playoff berth on the line at Oakland the Bills only ran 13 times for 13 yards with Orton throwing 49 times! This was against the 3-12 Raiders who were 32nd in points allowed. Each time the Bills ran the ball the Buffalo RB was met in the backfield almost every run.

Anyway, EJ had stated he learned more from watching Kyle Orton prepare for a game then he ever learned from anyone else on the team. What does that tell you about his OC, his QB coach? The kid never had a chance to properly develop in Buffalo due to inept coaching.

Josh Allen didn't have a veteran QB for the first quarter of the 2018 season and credits Anderson, Barkley with his improvement after his injury. Still, the scheme he has been playing in is not conducive in properly developing a rookie QB.

The logic here is flawed, because you imply that EJ has the potential to be a great QB.  Many draft analysts would disagree with that point.  Many had EJ at a 3rd or 4th round talent level.

My take is that he never was a 1st round pick to begin with.  It was a total over-reach by the Bills and a really terrible idea.  He never had the potential or talent to be a great QB in the first place, so your take about veteran QB’s and coaching is moot.

To anyone that doubts the interest in Brian Daboll as Head Coach next season, there have rumors and a reporter asked him about the opportunity.

Daboll didn’t directly answer the question.  He only said, “this is my hometown and I love it here” before trailing off.

Call me crazy but I think there might be a chance (though not a huge one) that he gets a head coaching job.

I think it's just another great example of the tremendous gap in overall talent between top college football teams and the NFL.

I was a huge EJ fan, but I think the NFL game was just too fast for him.

I do, however, think that being drafted by the Bills killed his career before it even started.  There couldn't have been a worse time/place to be a young QB.

The problem was that EJ never was a first round talent to begin with.  2013 was a very weak year for quarterbacks and rather than taking in the 3rd or 4th round, Buddy made him a 1st round pick which set the bar way too high to begin with.  It didn’t help to have Whaley double down as trade for Sammy the next season.

I don’t think anything went wrong for EJ.  He just wasn’t good enough to be a starting QB in the NFL and the Bills were so desperate they reached huge for him.

I do agree - he was put in a really bad situation though I doubt he had the talent to be a good NFL QB to begin with

This ^.  Lots of 'scoe hate on TBD.  He was a helluva PR.  Both he and Leodis My Man suffered from PRing during the Hester area.  Welcome back Roscoe Parrish!

I would not say that people are hating.  Just that the praise Parrish received recently here is a bit over the top.  Calling him a “legend” or comparing his to Antonio Brown is a bit of a stretch don’t you think?

I fell that most have Roscoe correctly pegged as a player that had a lot of potential but never put it all together in large part because of his numerous injuries

I'm also a now but it's a shame. I remember him scorching the Bills a few years back in one the few games he started and finished. Guy has/had a ton of talent.

Maybe... but I love the idea of getting a big target at TE who can run.  I feel that it could really help Allen on the intermediate routes when team blitz.  Same with a good pass catching RB

Ummmm I hope I never find out about any of the QB’s he “layed” with ????

As far as the QB’s he played with, fine, but consider Roscoe’s stats over the course of 16 games compared to Lee Evans.  He consistently had higher numbers in receptions and yards.  So while if the bad QB’s didn’t hinder Lee’s numbers very much, why did they hinder Roscoe’s?

Again, my whole point is that some here are exaggerating Roscoe’s actual body of work for the team.

Brown has had more receiving yards in a season then Parrish in his career.

its like comparing a crack in the wall to the Grand Canyon..

I don’t quite get the comparisons either.  They are both smaller, fast WR’s who are good punt returners but the production is no where near close

but including a player that will continue to be under team friendly contract for a division rival in the original post is the point of this thread?

...You mean including a player that’s actually underutilized!?!?  I never said anything about contracts or about division rivals, just a player that’s under the radar and Drake fits the bill.  I also feel that James White would be a good choice.

Your joke about Mahomes wasn’t really smart, funny, or witty, which is why I appreciate those here who provided good choices.

    Roscoe was literally not coverable

    Just could not stay healthy

A bit of a hyperbole.  Yes Roscoe has his issues with injuries especially toward the end of his career but read his stats.  He did play a full 16 game season a few years and one 13 game season.  Again, he never amassed more than 35 receptions.  He usually was under 30.

So again, you can say that he had potential or was a good route runner but to say “uncoverable” is a bit of an exaggeration.  I wouldn’t say that a reciever with 30 receptions over 16 games was uncoverable.  That’s the truth.  My point is Bills fans sometimes look back and remember players for being better than they were I actuality

I hope the title is descriptive enough. First off, I'm not a moron when it comes to football but there is a lot about the game that I do not understand. Are there any websites I can go to that break down the game a little bit more for amateurs such as myself? Different coverages, schemes and assignments. I crave a deeper understanding of the game. Please help.

IMO the majority of people breaking down film are not really qualified to do so.  Many like Cover 1 are basically fans that played in high school.  That’s the extent of their background.  You’d be better off seeking for a professional that really knows what they are talking about

    Here's a list on Offense...

Chris Conley- agree with Virgil on this one

Jamison Crowder - WR - Redskins - 5'9 but stout.  Does not drop very many.  Good speed.

Jesse James - TE - Steelers - Love this guys toughness- 6' 7" target; reliable hands.

Mike Person - G- SF - 30 years old but has only really played the last 4 years.  He can fill a hole at RG for the next 5 years

Ja'Waun James - OT - Dolphins- not very durable but really good feet and mirror ability

Ty Nsekhe - OT - A true frickin road grader at 330 lbs

The Bills will sign some higher profile FA but these guys are all process guys and contributors.  Upgrades over the depth we have and can compete for significant playing time.

    Good choices

He is the leading punt returner in Bills history...

When he left the Bills he was SECOND ALL TIME IN AVERAGE in modern history behind Hester

He was a fantastic returner and there is no debating that. He could catch a football too

He couldn’t hold up to the NFL rigors, shove that revisionist history up your

The difference is that Hester and others have about three times the returns that Parrish does.  Why?  Because he was often injured and didn’t get the chance at as many returns.

Also you say he could catch the football?  His best season was about 35 catches.  Again, people are exaggerating his abilities here as they often do with former Bills players.

I will say that he had the potential to be a really good gadget player if he could stay healthy.  But the comparisons to Antonio Brown are revisionist history.

3 minutes ago, The Drought said:

He was correct about small receivers who also returns punts. Parrish, Brown and Lockett, almost interchangeable if you stop comparing there.

Roscoe was a good punt returner who also had some success as a slot guy here.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/P/ParrRo00.htm

Success as a slot reciever?  Since when does less than 35 receptions in a year equate success.  He was an OK reciever that never really made a significant impact.

Bills all time punt return leader. Underrated receiver

retired #2 all time in average yards per punt return behind Hester...

if they weren’t in the same era Parrish goes down as one of the best punt return men

and he did have great hands and crisp routes... I’d kill for Parrish rn

Its really hard to call Roscoe Underrated because he was always injured.  pretending that a former Bills player was better than he actually was is just revisionist history

  14. I often find myself thinking that a certain role player would be perfect on the Bills.  It’s not usually an All-Pro or even a standout player.  But a guy who flies under the radar as a role player that would be ideal for the Bills.

My choice is Kenyon Drake in Miami.  I feel he is criminally underutilized in Miami, as bruiser backs like old Frank Gore or Brandon Bolin get more carries than Drake.  I doubt Miami would trade w/n the division but man I would love to see Drake in Buffalo.

I would make Drake the feature back in the Bills offense.  He could carry the load at RB and could help Allen in the short passing game to beat the blitz.

    who are some other options?

For the 1st time in a long time, I feel like the AFC East is headed for significant change.  Gone, I think, are the days of the Patriots being odds on favorites (and rightfully so) every year. Will it happen next year? I don't know if that soon (it may depend on Belichick and Brady and how long they are willing to stick it out and whether the teams below make significant gains this offseason)  but for the first time in forever I feel like the Jets and Bills both have legitimate NFL quarterbacks.

The Jets jumped ahead of the Bills last year to the 3 spot to take Darnold. This preemptive strike, in my opinion, has put them ahead in the chase. He already has a big time wideout in Anderson and tight end in Herndon. After seeing some of his throws here at the end of the last game, I for one was impressed. Tremendously accurate, great throw after a scramble. for a td, and a commanding presence. Is he perfect? No. He has INT's and might fumble a little  but I think he will be very good. I think there are legitimate reasons he was the 2nd QB after Mayfield.  The Jets again will likely pick ahead of the Bills. They may well take the top O lineman if available. They have more salary cap space then the Bills do in 2019 and will be chasing offensive linemen and receivers just like Buffalo. Is NY a better place to play than Buffalo? I don't know. A lot may well depend on who the new Jets coach (and perhaps GM are). I doubt with Darnold in place the Jets will have to settle in the coaching department. It will be a job a good coach might want.

The Bills have a better D and can stop the pass. To me that is critical in this age of football. Can they fill in enough holes on what I view as a borderline expansion level of talent on the offensive side of the ball to be able to throw the ball with consistency and score through the air? To me NFL football is about passing and stopping the pass. The best teams can throw it and get consistent chunk yards and score with it. Not just occasional big plays but consistent movement. Having a really good O line helps immeasurably. Having a good running game to keep teams off balance helps a lot. The Bills have neither.

This off season (after getting their QB) to me is the most important in a long long time. The AFC East power vacuum is ending. It is right there for them to jump legitimately in the hunt.

    THE WINDS OF CHANGE!

Take me to the magic of the moment

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001004510/article/nfl-head-coach-candidates-names-to-know-for-this-hiring-cycle

So I’m reading this article on NFL.com for head coaching candidates.  They basically name a ton of candidates, some of which probably won’t get any interviews.  So take it for what it’s worth.  But they list Leslie Frazier as a potential candidate for Bills HC:

Leslie Frazier, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator, 59: Longtime NFL assistant was 21-32-1 with one playoff appearance in Minnesota (2010-13). Brings a calming presence. Interviewed with the Colts in February.”

Ironically they don’t mention Brian Daboll who some have speculated could interview for openings this season.  They did reference former Bills DC George Edwards who currently is the DC in Minnesota (though Zimmer runs the defense.). I just remember that George’s defense in Buffalo was absolutely terrible and unlike Minnesota, he was the only one calling the plays.  Chan’s loyalty to stick with George a year longer than he should have was a big factor in his failure in Buffalo.  Pretty confident George is not a HC in 2019:

George Edwards, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, 51: Biggest factor working against him is Mike Zimmer calls the defense. Plays a big role in game plan. Interviewed with the Bears a year ago and impressed.

There are some names that I think will be legit contenders and others that I’m not quite sure are on the list.

In the grand scheme of things yelling “you f’n suck” to a team as they enter the tunnel seems like the least of the problems that could occur on a stadium of 80,000 people
