Cole does have sure hands but even he has not caught 62 mph zingers.

I do think that he can be the X factor in a few games. But his impact is going to be critically dependent on the OL, deep threats as well as the RB performance. Also we will have to see Allen’s short game touch to see if he can exploit Cole’s strengths.

I continue to believe that the most important acquisition in offense was Mitch Morse. He can allow Allen to step into the pocket and go through his progressions. Then we will know how good Allen is  as a pocket QB. (He is already great as a scrambling QB). This will also give Cole and others time to do their thing - which is get open.

In addition, Morse will get the o-line into the correct protection calls.  This was a problem last year.  I think this improvement will give Cole the chance to do his thing underneath.

Actually, dips like this are the times when smart people buy.  For every "Chicken Little" running around saying the sky is falling, guys like Warren Buffet pull out the check book and take advantage of low prices.

I'm glad EJ is hanging them up.  He was a decent guy but a pitiful QB.

With his size and length he would not project there. However, he does have a lot of speed off the snap. I don't envision this scenario happening, but I could see him rushing from other positions in sub packages. Oliver was born to be a three technique though.

I agree with you.  Given his salary, I doubt that the Bills are in the market for Gerald McCoy.  I envision the D-line in passing situations being Hughes, Oliver, Lawson at d-tackle, and either Murphy or Alexander at D-end.  The price to acquire and pay McCoy is probably too high when there may be more pressing needs.  I was in Indianapolis last week and there is talk there that the Colts may have an interest and a need for McCoy.  They also have the cap space to take him.  If he is made available, it could develop into competing bids which would drive up the cost to get him.  I don't see Beane being interested in that scenario.

I think it has to do with they aren't satisfied with who we have as far as starters and depth

You may be right but it may just be that none of these guys have much of a history of actual on field performance.  They may be playing it safe by bringing in a larger number of guys hoping to hit it on a couple of them.  Similar to their approach on the o-line.

Last year, the board was struggling to come to grips with the Bills decision to trade up and draft Josh Allen when Josh Rosen was still on the board

    Much calmer this draft...

The only thing is, I remember being very worried, personally, that the OL would suck and expressing that view...and having many tell me it would be OK, or at least better than I thought.  It was hoped that Kelvin Benjamin would be rejuvenated by injury recovery in the off-season and would be the #1 we hoped for, while Clay would be rejuvanated by having a QB more willing to gun it than TT was.  Alas none of that was true, and while Zay did take a step, it wasn't a Giant Step.

So....it's a new season.  Hope Springs for the Bills fans!

I hope the new line OL is improved...I hope the RB corps has "spring" in their step.  And I hope Josh Allen has taken a step.

    Go Bills!

Good post!  I also remember thinking the the o-line would be horrendous. The unexpected loss of Eric Woods was the biggest single factor in the demise of the o-line. Unfortunately, I wasn't wrong.  I was also concerned about the corner playing opposite White but that situation turned out okay.  I don't think many fans understood how bad the cap situation was.  I remember reading posts wanting to sign numerous high value free agents.  Beane had to manage things last year with little money.  We did get to see the coaching staff do a good job with a poor roster. If they can repeat that level of coaching performance with this improved pool of talent, the Bills will be a dangerous opponent.

  6. Good info.  Clearly, the process includes gathering physical talent that isn't going to get pushed around in a street fight.  I remember seeing Aaron Williams on the ground after a cheap hit by Jarvis Landry and wondering why a team mate wasn't in the process of kicking the sh__ out of Landry.  I have a feeling that this version of the Bills won't a be bunch of pansies that will be physically intimidated by anyone. This change has been too long in coming.

  7. Great work compiling the list.  There are some definite future cap casualties on it.  Some of the better players are likely to restructure existing deals to stay where they are.  Guys like Harris are being difficult to get more cash and probably don't care where they play next year.  As other posters have indicated, there are a few that would be great fits for our Bills.  I think there will be some surprises that aren't on the list, maybe a couple of Bills.  I'm sure Beane is on top of this and will be ready to move if the right guy becomes available.

If anything, being short has helped plenty of backs in the NFL - making it tough for defenders to find them behind LOS

I agree with you about the height phobia.  Think about M.Jones-Drew, Ray Rice, or Warrick Dunn. Joe Cribbs was fairly short.  Emit Smith and Walter Payton didn't have great size either.  None of these guys were giants but were very good.  I'd take a repeat of MJD's career for the Bills in a heart beat.

This was a bad pick that the Bills did not have a need for to begin with.

You may very well be right but I believe that Beane and McD were not pleased with the performance of the reserves ( Ford and Murphy) when injuries hit last year. They weren't about to repeat that experience.  I also believe that they want to get some experience for a talented younger player before the 2020 season.  If he shows that he isn't a viable high volume replacement for McCoy, they will have made a bad pick.

The game has changed IMO. The days of the big physical receivers are over. The rules have taken away the physicality of the DBs. The name of the game now is separation and speed. Antonio Brown and OBJ are the new prototypes.

For the most part, I agree with you.  The biggest exception is down close in the red zone.  Space is restrictive and throws over the top or the corner fade are still major weapons in the end zone.

  11. Unfortunately, most of the national sports news media output originates from NYC.  It has a systemic slant toward NYC teams.  That means that their opponents are disproportionately trashed and the NYC teams are presented favorably.  This shifts slightly as the season goes along and the win/loss record for NYC teams heads for the dumpster.  I have learned to be very selective when choosing sports news media outlets to use.  Forums like this one with the informed participants provides as much valuable insight as any of the major sports news outlets.  We air the good and the bad and are not shy about disagreeing with divergent points of view.

The best way to turn off the news media crap is for JA and the Bills to come out and kick some a__.  The media seldom takes shots at a winner.

  12. Typically guys like him are fed their knowledge from some low level staff.  Most on screen "talent" does little of their own research.  I found him to be nothing more than a talking head, except when it comes to college basketball.  The rest of the time he is clueless.  There's a reason he is no longer on ESPN.

Raiders have lost Isiah Crowell for the season...I'm thinking they'd be desperate to give up a 2nd or 3rd for Shady...

As much as I enjoy watching the Raiders do dumb things, I think there is zero chance of this happening. There are still some unsigned veterans out there that could be signed as a backup for nothing.

That's why i spent 250 bucks like 3 years ago for a custom Jersey with the #1 (stitched on, not ironed) on it and it says GO BILLS as the name on the back...

I will never buy player jerseys anymore unless they become legends...

Kyle Williams for example i wouldn't have a problem purchasing a jersey of but I'm good at the moment with my custom...

    I’m sticking with my 34.

It will be Yeldon that gets cut, I'd wager.

Big huge guess based on nothing. McCoy had nobody to block for him, so how can you pin anything on him from last year's failure in the run game. Everyone with an opinion that matters (Bills decision makers) believe he has a lot left in the tank.

Ford and Murphy will be toast. They had a chance to shine last year and didn’t. FB will probably be a cut, if they need to make one. McCoy’s lack of production was clearly the result of horrendous line play. The Bills know that from watching the game film. If they doubted that, he’d already be gone. The Bills suffered multiple injuries at RB and the reserves were not up to the job, especially in pass protection. That won’t happen again. Gore and Yeldon are both excellent in pass protection.

None are the physical specimen that DK is.

He is your 50/50 guy. The guy who can go up and get the ball..... he may flame out but I'd much rather they take a shot with him and at least make a better attempt at putting the recievers around Allen.

Josh Brown and Beasley are essentially slot recievers/borderline number 2's.

Love what they did with the offensive line but if Foster comes back down to earth or any substantial injuries to the WR corps and they are right back where they were last year.... Having Allen pass to a boat load of trash.

Everyone seems to be hung up on the idea of the so called #1 WR. You don’t have to have one player like a Julio Jones to have an effective  pass offense. Look at the Rams. I would not call any of their receivers a #1. They are all very good but none of them compare to Julio, OBJ, or Hopkins. My opinion is that you can have a good passing game with a collection of players that can do some things well but aren’t able to do everything well. A group of receivers that complement each other is easier to create than finding the next Julio Jones. I will settle for a group of complementary receivers until we have the next OBJ, Hopkins, or Julio land on our roster. Those guys don’t come around very often.

Great article and shows scouts and front offices are getting more savvy. This was a weak WR class. I think Beane looked at who was available in the draft and felt the team already had players who possessed that skill set. He didn’t waste a pick on a player he knew wouldn’t have a great chance to separate himself from the others. Another sign Beane knew better than us what was going on.

Amen! We fans get emotionally attached to a player or a position group and would have the team pass on better players just to satisfy our emotional desire. Fortunately Beane didn’t listen to us.

its very suspicious that the news is let out the  day oof the draft.. Yes there will be legal issues if it was botched...

There may or may not be legal issues involved on this.  I would need to see any waivers that prospects sign to be part of the combine and associated medical exams.  My guess is that the No Fun League has iron clad protection for themselves.  In terms of proving financial damage and thus liability, the player would need evidence to prove that another team or teams would have drafted him earlier had it not been for the medical issue.  A steep hill to climb legally.

I agree that all of this and the timing seems suspicious.
