...so then how to explain nobody wants to come to Bflo as I'm told here?....

I think you missed the point of my post in as much as Frank Gore already made the decision to come to Buffalo.  I do agree with you that many high profile free agents refuse to go to Buffalo and some other small market teams.  I think some of that relates to the lower potential income from endorsements in small markets.

  2. This is SOP for any responsible labor union.  It has nothing to do with sending a message to the owners about being difficult during negotiations.  With the salary cap growing each year, the players and owners are making a ton of money.  With this much money available and players careers having a limited shelf life, I doubt that a strike or lockout is in the cards.  In addition, there are new tv  and internet streaming contracts to be negotiated soon which will bring more revenue to the league.

  3. I don't think he is going to be Vince Young bad but I have low expectations for him.  With an entire off season to prepare for him, defensive coordinators will scheme to contain his running and force him to win games with his arm. He has yet to prove that he is capable of doing that. With the personnel losses on the Baltimore defense, the offense will need to score more points to win games this year.  I'm skeptical that this will happen.

Spencer Long working as a starting guard is extremely telling to me. I envisioned the staff preferring that he be the swing backup to all three interior spots. Knowing that they like him enough to ensure that he gets some starting LG reps this early -- even though Morse and Bodine aren't on the field -- tells me that they believe he can start at guard for the Bills. I agree with them. I'm high on Long's potential to return to his pre-Jets form, when he was an above average guard for Washington.

I'm also intrigued that they have Spain working at RG. He has, if I'm not mistaken, been a left guard his entire career.

If Long, Spain, and Ford all win starting roles and perform well, the Bills will have fixed the offensive line in just one offseason. Here's hoping.

I think your analysis is right on. The thing that I find most encouraging is that they seem to have found more than five starting caliber linemen.  This should not only fix the line but also provide capable injury replacements.

The addition of a guy like Mik'Quan Deane -- rather than pursuing a "name" player like a Kyle Rudolph -- tells me they're fine rolling with Knox, Sweeney, and Croom until Kroft comes back healthy. Hopefully the rooks can get up to speed quickly.

I think you're correct.  I saw where it is being reported that Rudolf was offered a contract extension from the Vikings, thus taking him out of play.  They'll keep Lee Smith to have a veteran influence to help the young guys and be the main in-line TE.  Croom may be the biggest beneficiary of this whole drama.

The Bills have a number of TEs on the roster, including a UDFA or two.  If they were to sign one, I assume it would be to upgrade the back end of the TE depth.  Unless they were to coax Gronk out of retirement (which I don't expect) there can't be a lot of quality out there.

At this point, this could be nothing more than picking up a camp body.  There may be some better options available when the teams make the first cut down from 90.  If a trade for Rudolf isn't in the cards, maybe they could make a pitch for Cameron Brate of Jack Doyle.  Both are good players getting little playing time because of a better player ahead of them.

Is it me or does this seem like a bush league move by Tampa not to release him before the draft?

I thought the same thing when I saw that he had been released.  FA signing period had come and gone.  Most teams had spent their FA money. This really limited his options to sign elsewhere.  He had been a very good player and a good guy in the community.  I hope things work out for him but just not in our division.

  8. Gerald McCoy is being released to give Tampa Bay some cap space this season.  NBC Sports has identified several potential landing spots for him.  They have the Bills on that list.  I don't think that is likely for a few of reasons.  First, McCoy will probably want to go to a team that is very close to contending for a Super Bowl.  Sadly, I don't think the Bills are quite there yet.  Secondly, he will be looking for extensive playing time and I don't see the Bills putting Ed Oliver on the sidelines to give McCoy a big chunk of PT.  Lastly, McCoy will be looking for a decent sized contract that would probably be more than Beane would be willing to pay.  What do the rest of you think?

Yes, he had that too, but I remember some article in the Buffalo News or somewhere that his leg problem hinder his play on the right side---gosh maybe it was further back then I think & it was the big lineman out of Texas that we draft early---man I'm getting to old remember some of this.

I think your memory is correct.  I believe he had problems with his right ankle and had at least one surgery.

  10. Even though big chunk pass plays are what peaks the fan's enthusiasm.  It is the ability to run the ball that allows teams to protect a lead and burn up the clock.  Atlanta would have won a Super Bowl, if they had been able to run the ball to churn out a first down late in the fourth quarter.  Good teams are balanced and can take advantage of what the defense is conceding.  Sometimes that means being able to run the ball.

This would just be a friggin maraschino on that giant Sunday of sadness that is the beginning of the Gase era. Please let it happen.

You've got that right.  Williams has been the guy that sees a lot of double teams.  He's a decent kid and is a steady performer.  I guess that makes him a target for Waste Gase.  If he becomes available, there will be no shortage of teams wanting to trade for him.

Kelly has marginal talent as it is without al his other issues.  This sure looks like a Frank Reich gift to his friend but that wont extend into the real playing season.

If you watched many SEC games, calling him a marginal talent is a bit harsh.  His behavior has always been the issue with him.  By many accounts, he was coddled and many people looked the other way during his many transgressions.  They didn't do the kid any good.  If he is able to stay sober and out of trouble, he may still carve out a career as a backup.  I doubt that any owner will ever give him the keys to a franchise.

  13. I'm not writing off the Cheatriots just yet but when the wheels come off an old QB, bad things happen quickly.  They have been the masters of creating mismatches with opposing defenses.  Gronk was a big part of that.  I expect them to use a strong run game to keep teams in their base defense to create their mismatches that way.  Brady doesn't seem to have the big play ability that he used to have but he is still very accurate in the short to medium range passing game.

The advantage of employing a defense that values traits differently than the rest of the league is that you can get the best players for your system at draft positions that represent great value.

Good observation!  It is a good advantage as long as the scheme is effective.  Based on McD's history in Carolina and the first two years in Buffalo, I think the scheme is effective.

How is this different from McDermott and Beane?   McDermott didn't like Watkins, and he was traded and replaced by Benjamin.  McDermott didn't like Dareus, and he was replaced, eventually, by Loutelei.   McDermott didn't like Taylor, and McDermott attempted to replace him with Peterman in 2017, and then did see him replaced by Peterman in 2018.  While there wasn't any indication that McDermott didn't like Glenn per se, certainly he was deemed expendable and was replaced by Dawkins who played poorly enough as a sophomore that there's realistic questions about his role on the 2019 team.

I don't think that Bills fans should laugh too much at the Jests and their fans because the Bills have done nothing in 20 years to demonstrate that they are in any way a competent organization. The currrent Bills regime hasn't yet proven their competence either.

I agree that Bills fans should not be laughing too much. because our past results have not been good either.  I think the Jets situation is a bit different.  Watkins was truly a bust by most accounts. He wasn't durable and was not worth the price.  It was the right decision to let him walk.  He has done very little with the Rams or the Chiefs.  He was a good young guy but missed too many games.  Cordy Glenn had injury issues as well and is on the downward slope of his career.  Cordy was a high priced guy that couldn't be depended upon to be on the field.  He was hurt a lot. He didn't exactly tear it up in Cincinnati.  Dareus was an overpaid, under performing player.  His behavior was a problem.  In Jacksonville, he has been mainly a rotational player but clearly not worth the value of his contract.  The common thread here is there was not enough value vs. the salary cost.  Lee doesn't fit this same pattern.  My point was that Gase has a history of having bad relationships within an organization (got him fired in Miami) and got rid of decent players for less than good reasons.  Furthermore, Gase is alleged to have made comments that Bell and Mosley aren't worth the value of their contracts.  Not the way to start building a working relationship with the guys that are likely to be the cornerstones and leaders of the offense and defense.  The Jets seem to be mired in this kind of crap frequently.  It goes beyond just having a bad team like previous Bills teams.

This is a bad, bad, bad trade. Yes, Buffalo traded Dareus for a sixth, but it's because the previous regime overpaid a clearly unmotivated Dareus.

Lee was only making a shade over 2 per... there was nothing to be gained selling him low.

He was played out of position by the Jets.  As indicated in another post, he could be a weak side backer in a 4-3.  It looks like Gase is pulling the same thing he did in Miami.  Get rid of good players that he doesn't like and put inferior talent on the field.  Just another sad chapter in Jets football.
