Gee,   do you think there will be another Crowley type player as a FA or trade next year? Do you think that maybe 3 or 4 really great potential young defensive ends might wind up on somebody's practice squad-  somebody they are trying to hide?  Maybe a guy who has already been through the original screening and culling that rookies get, and has a year or two of time on pro training.  Have you looked at who might be available in the 2021 draft ?    This is not the last chance we have to pump young DE's into the pipeline.  Is it possible that one of the Bills depth chart people might develop.  Has God put out a notice that as of 3-29-2020 not a single additional NFL DE is going to be allowed to breathe?        https://nfltraderumors.co/2021-nfl-free-agent-list/

That’s not what I’m getting at.  My point is you have to consider the salary cap years down the line.  If the Bills are going to tie up $30M+ on Josh Allen, $17M+ on Tre White, $12M on Dion Dawkins it’s going to drastically change their cap space.  So you need to find cost controlled players on rookie deals.

If the Bills draft a DE in Round 2, he’ll have a year to play behind Addison and Hughes and then can start in the 2021 season allowing them the flexibility to clean up their cap by moving on from either veteran DE.

To your argument about a DE other places - with a few exceptions, most of the quality edge rushers in the NFL were drafted between Rounds 1-3.   Also in three drafts McDermott has never spent a high pick on a DE.

I just think all signs point to a DE in Round 2.

He wasn’t the greatest run defender .... probably that simple

This is what I had heard.  He was a fairly good pass rusher for a DT but given his pressure to sack rate, you can’t argue that his sack # was a bit of an outlier.  He was not the best run defender, so they figured they could get comparable or better production from a rotational DT for less than $10M

Yes Phillips is a talented player. At his size, with his athleticism he is a freak and he ended up in the right spot in Buffalo

And McDermott put him in the best spot to succeed because he's a great defensive coach

What Phillips wasn't great at was playing his 1-11. Which is the most important part of McDermott's defense

All 11 players doing their job to make the defense successful. While Phillips certainly bought into the culture and team he still liked to free-lance

He didn't like to take 2 gaps when asked and would rather shoot the game hurting our run defense at times. In a front 4 scheme where gap integrity is key, Phillips lacked that detail

Yes a talented player but McDermott will get that out of guys who play his way 100% of the time , not 75%

From what I read, he didn’t do the best job playing the run.  Many of the times when the defense was gashed on the ground, Phillips was in the game

With only one quality running back why in the hell would they wait until the 4th round?  The R1b will get at least 10-15 touches a game.  We might be able to get one of the top 3 RB's who (within 2-3 years) could be a top 8 RB in the league.  You rather a development prospect at DE, who 53 other teams decided not to draft.  JHC !!

I’m not saying I personally would do it, it’s just what  I’m guessing.  Only because they have no future option at DE after this season.  Hughes and Addison are short term at this point.

You can make the argument at CB2.  If they resign Tre they will want a cost-controller started on the other side for the next 5 years.  I see CB as a real option too.

Beane says they need more "touchdown makers".   Are we going to get a starting WR at #54?  Nope. Can't get TD's sitting on the bench.  DE?  I couldn't find any DE who scored a TD last year.  Of the top 50 tacklers, 3 LB and 1 S scored TD.s     No DE's.   ......Let's put our thinking caps on.   We have our starting WR on the team already and they touch the ball a lot....Hmmmmmm.  Tight ends get passed to sometimes but we have a decent bunch of them, there is no superman in the draft, and they seldom score except as an almost gadget play in the red zone...... Hmmm  Allen is already on the team as the QB..........WAIT  I got it !!   We are going to draft a CENTER because he handles the ball the most !!  A quick 4.55 guy and the QB handback to the center will be our bread and butter play. !!......  or maybe a top notch RB?

I think RB is certainly a possibility but I don’t think they’ll draft one before the 4th round.  I think that the pick in the 2nd round will be DE or CB.  They might not go offense until rounds 4 and 5.

Knox was a great coach but his teams (in LA and BUF especially) also had a bad habit of coming up flat at random times, and of having no luck in the playoffs.

The 1980 team was great, but twice collapsed against the Colts and also against the Falcons at home--a win in any of those games, and they would have been hosting a playoff game.

The 1981 team had horrific collapses in New York, Dallas, and St. Louis and blew an 11-point fourth quarter lead in Cincinnati, as well as a dismal performance in the season finale in Miami. It was as if something was missing in the team's character that kept them from getting higher when they had a chance to take that next step.

The total fold after the 1982 strike was a back-breaker all around. (Many other franchises struggled to get it back together that year.) Knox lost the team in that last month, and whatever disagreements he had with Ralph on an extension were a convenient reason to go somewhere else and start over. Stevenson was young and inexperienced. He inherited an aging team that nonetheless started well only to collapse in the second half of 1983 under the weight of age and injuries and contract drama around Joe Cribbs.

And that was it until the Arrival of Jim Kelly

So cool - thank you for the informative and respectful response.  I’ve often wondered about Chuck Knox and the circumstances to his leaving Buffalo.  This helps...much appreciation ??

I mean, I dont know what else to discuss at this point. What a wild ride. But man, all those "zoo owners" are crazy.

Sucks for Joe Exotic, because when they show clips from his younger days it seems he truly did mean well for animals, but then got lost in the money and drugs.

Drugs seemingly being the common denominator with all those folks. Obviously, with Mario Tabraue being a coke kingpin. And if Doc Antele was hanging with him in the 80s, there is no way he WASNT doing piles of coke right along with him. Wouldnt be surprised if that is how all these guys funded their "zoos".

Good Point.  I always wondered how each person (beside Carole) started their zoo - especially Joe.  Are we to believe that he bought 2 cats and started breeding and doing shows and scaled from

Watson is good. That's part of the reason it was close.

Bills offense prone to mistakes, being cautious is a good option if not the best option.  we saw those mistakes first hand, they were incredibly close to winning that game except for a few mistakes on the field by basically everyone.

To lose that game a lot of things had to go wrong....and did:

    - Josh Allen panicked

    - OL struggled

    - Defense couldn’t get HOU off field

    - Questionable playcalling

    - WR’s collectively had their worst game

    - Knox and Morse missed a key block

To put the blame on one thing alone is wrong

Why was it close when you're up 16 points with 21 minutes remaining?  Because McD, despite his tough talk, doesn't put the collective foot on his opponent's throat.  He's a conventional coach who, when the chips are down, plays it safe.  That's gotta change if, as someone below knows they are, "Super Bowl caliber."

Yep.  And offense is this coaches Achilles heal, although their skill talent has improved for 2020.  Gonna be real interesting seeing how they use Diggs, Brown, Beasley, Knox, and Singletary.

Big picture perspective?  Every coach and GM in the league are driving for continuous improvement because, barring success, they'll all be out of a job eventually.  You think McD is the only one riding that wagon?

I saw a HC last year who was 1-4 against playoff level teams.  Hence, my point about him needing to up his game.  He does that by changing his spots and learning to be bold offensively.  Do you believe a guy that's been defensive minded his whole career acquiesces suddenly to being an up-tempo offense?  I think the jury's out on that.

McD has 20 years of NFL experience.  If he's not good on game day by now, it's probably not going to get better.

In defense of McDermott, it’s not like they tried to play ground-and-pound with a 16 point lead.  They did try to throw the ball and put points on the board. Unfortunately Josh Allen didn’t have a great second.  They probably should have given Motor more carries.  Don’t want to see Gore on the field ever again.

Because I want opinions of Bills fans...not the facts.  I know the facts - just want some context and analysis.  Not many people are talking about Chuck Know or the 1981 Bills these days

It was one of many mistakes Ralph made, IMO. Kay was a huge disaster.

I just enjoyed watching the video of the old days. It was kind of a dark period (as in “going dark” not sad) in Bills history for me. I was in college out of state, there was no DTV or Sunday Ticket. You had to watch the highlights at halftime on Monday Night Football to see a little snippet of my beloved Bills. Years later, I would go to Chili’s for lunch on the day the USA Today sports section had a couple sentences about each team. I’m old, but I’m not ancient. It wasn’t that long ago that getting Bills info was very difficult. Plenty of other threads about that.

@Chandler#81, thanks for the links to a bunch of good stuff I largely missed after leaving WNY.

    .

Thanks - did Kay have a good reputation as an up-and-coming offensive mind or was he just a cheap hire to replace Knox?  Kind of like the hires of Craig Williams and Mike Mularkey?

  11. 2 minutes ago, Augie said:

    Yes, of course you are.

I will say, this is a far more appropriate place to share your feelings for Ralph rather than the thread commemorating is passing. Having said that, why does every thread have to turn into this?  Geez, get over it already! No need to reach.... just because something is Bills related, Ralph is fair game?  Show some variety!   :)

Im asking because Chuck Knox was coach of this 1981 football team.  I’m wondering why he left Buffalo and how much of an impact his departure had on the team.  It seemed that Kay the Head Coach was a colossal clusterfreak

  12. I will admit, I don’t know much about the Bills before JIm Kelly joined the team.

I could never figure out Chuck Knox,  he had 2 bad seasons, 2 good ones, and then a disappointing year.  Didn’t get along with Ralph and walked away.  What a shocker.

Many older fans lamented that the Bills let him go, probably because Knox had a few good years with Seattle and the Bills were saddled with Kay Stephenson who appears to be the “hot” coordinator turned crappy head coach.

How big was Ralph’s decision not to retain Chuck? And was it all over money?

  13. Unless it’s suddenly postponed, it’s looking like the NFL Draft will be on is in a few weeks.  In this thread, make a bold NFL Draft prediction about the Buffalo Bills.

I will start - my prediction is:

The Bills won’t draft a WR until Round 5.  For all the talk about WR prospects, I believe the Bills feel good about their WR room.  I see the team drafting an Edge Rusher, CB and RB before they go WR.

Also I see the Bills drafting a QB in around 6

Does everyone now forget the last game he coached?  Buffalo was up 16-0 late in the third quarter only to lose 22-19.

He's also a career 3-17 against teams either in the playoffs or make the post-season.  He's gotta start beating the better teams more frequently.  And next season's schedule is sure to be more difficult than 2019's.

McD has a lot to improve on.

Part of the reason they lost is because the offense stopped scoring.

Duke isn’t even remotely close to the main reason we lost that game.  That TD throw and attempted catch was a high degree of difficulty.  I can live with that play a heck of a lot more than the others.

The Gore runs up the middle prior to that throw are unforgivable on their own.  Our multiple guys not being able to block one guy on that Josh run that would have likely sealed the game is unforgivable.  The failed sack on Watson by Milano was unforgivable that allowed Watson to seal the game.  Daboll’s idiotic game calls at key moments was unforgivable, almost all of which involved Gore.  I could name several other self inflicted bone head moments too.

Then there are the refs.  The missing of the play clock being expired for 2 seconds on 3rd and very long in OT was unforgivable.  The fake penalty on Ford was unforgivable.  The refs literally screwed us massively with critical mistakes no less than 3 times (there were more, but saying critical game changing plays).

Im glad we are upgrading WRs.  And you are absolutely right, Duke is going to be fighting for the 4th and 5th WR spot probably with a rookie along with Foster and McKenzie.  But he was way way down the list of reasons we lost that game IMO.

For me it’s way way way more on Daboll, Refs, and some totally whiffed plays by our players.

I never said Duke was the reason the Bills lost.  I did say that his play is the reason why WR was a huge priority.  His poor play showed Duke likely isn’t worth of the snaps he was getting at WR2.

I think we can agree that there were a lot of factors for the losses. I think you forgot to add Josh Allen to the list.  He panicked and pissed the bed and played like garbage for most of the second half

A first year WR who spent most the season getting scout team reps with practice squad QBs then almost zero reps with Josh in over a month leading into the last few weeks of the season, was supposed to come into a playoff game and not make mistakes.

What I don't get is how short of a leash we put on players who show high potential but weren't drafted high so are considered throw away players. Duke, by far, imo showed enough to warrant the opportunity he will have to make the team this year AND CONTRIBUTE.

Anyone with good football eyes can see he has the ability. To judge his performance in his 4th or 5th NFL game of his life and say that's why he is fighting for a spot is quite absurd.

Not really he had a chance to contribute on a grand stage and he responded by dropping passes.  Both the TD and a catch late that would have put them in FG range.  He’s nowhere near ready to be a contributor on offense.  Maybe our 6th WR.....MAYBE
