So as a kid I was always pissed that Ronnie Harmon didn’t catch what I thought was a easy catch the 2nd to last play before Jim Kelly threw the game ending interception.

Last night after all these years I rewatched the 1989 divisional playoff game in its entirety on Youtube and I had totally forgotten that on the previous td Scott Norwood slipped on his butt and missed the extra point to put the Bills behind by 4 points instead of 3 with like 3 minutes to go.So Norwood basically screwed up badly two years in a row??

Good find... I didn’t starting the Bills seriously until the 1990 season.

Ive always said this - Bill Polian replaced Scott Norwood 2 years too late.  He dropped off quite a bit after the 1988 and was completely unreliable on grass.  We’re not talking 40 or 50 yard PAT’s.  He was missed those gimme 19 yard PAT’s on grass turf like he did in Cleveland.

Norwood’s apologists will say he never should have been in that position because he wasn’t good on grass or from 40+.  I’m sorry but even in 1991, if your kicker can’t make that kick, you need a replacement.  Ironically it was Matt Bahr’s long FG in San Francisco that won the game for the Giants the week before “the kick.”

Norwood’s performance was far from impressive in 1990 or 1991.  He didn’t really have any clutch as kick, as Christie would in 1992.   You might be able to argue that a better kicker might win them atleast 1 Super Bowl.

    @JAMIEBUF12 Great nostalgia thread.

Looking back to the draft held 5 years ago, many teams came out disappointed in the results.  A 1st round pick is supposed to be a difference maker & be with the team beyond 5 years, yet of the 32 picks, due to injuries, busts & free agents looking to move on, only 7 are still with the team that drafted them.  Even worse, of the top 10, only 1 player is still on his drafted team.  The 1st 2, QBs Winston & Mariotta fell out of favor & were not wanted back by their teams after 5 seasons. Any QB at the top of the draft who is jettisoned after 5 years is a wasted pick.

The Bills, who didn't have a 1st rounder, didn't pick a single player of much consequence and none are still with the team.  2nd rounder Darby was traded after 2 seasons for a 1 year rental of Matthews and a 3rd round pick (H. Phillips).  Due to injuries he has been a disappointment and recently signed with his 3rd team as a UFA.  3rd rounder Miller lasted 4 up & down seasons with the Bills and lasted only 1 year with Cincinnati after signing with them.  He also is now on his 3rd team.  The rest of the picks were JAGs who have bounced around with only 1 of the remaining 4 still (barely) in the league.

Ironically, one of the best picks of that draft was Minnesota's 5th rounder, WR Stefon Diggs. While he too is no longer with his original team, Minnesota got a haul of draft choices from the Bills.  The players from the 2015 draft currently on the Bills are Diggs, Yeldon, Morse, Feliciano, & undrafted Spain, so the Bills got something out of the class of 2015 .

Doug Whaley - what a bad GM.  I am so glad he’s gone

22 hours ago, fergie's ire said:

I agree.  To me, it seemed like Whaley was always good at getting coaches what they wanted.  You want Shaq Lawson?  I'll get him for you.  You need a TE for your offense to run, Roman?  I'll get you Clay.  The problem was that he always seemed like an errand boy...like the coaches assistant.  The Pegulas made it sound like that dynamic was going to change after they fired Rex and that Whaley would be largely in charge of finding his replacement....but then they fell in love with McD....and at that moment, I think Whaley's fate was sealed.

I’m sorry but Whaley was a NOT a GM.  He had a shoddy draft record and left the Bills in cap hell.  Oh he also never could find the team a QB.  Worse yet, he just never seemed to be able to have a long term plan or vision like were seeing now, and it cost him.

For everyone who wants to defend Whaley - why is he not working in the NFL and instead banished to the island of XFL misfit toys?

John Dorsey was fired in KC and was hired shortly after in Cleveland

Brian Gaine was hired almost instantly after getting fired in Houston.

    Why not Doug?

Trust me I like Reich as much as the next fan. But he was in no way a starting QB, both Carolina and The Jets found that out the hard way. Great teammate and probably the best back up that ever played the game, but was a horrible starter. If the NFL had a Hall Of Fame for back ups he’d probably be a first ballot lol

The Bills found that out in Super Bowl 27 as well.

To be fair, by the time Reich went to Carolina he was 34 and on the downside of this career.  I think his career as starter might have been a little different if they traded him in 1990 or 1991.  But still I don’t think he ever would’ve been as good as Kelly

If they took at Edge at 54 I’d understand their decision. Unless there is a guy falling 30ish spots past his projected pick I wouldn’t understand any other defensive picks in the 2nd round.

Let’s get serious about building an elite offense, Diggs is nice now go get us Dobbins or a young WR.

I agree what Buscaglia said I the article that I just read was that Duggar has the athleticism and explosiveness to play all 3 downs. It would let the Bills play mostly Nickel.  He also said that Duggar is a game changing playmaker on defense and that has been something that is what the defense honesty lacked last season.

I really don’t think they’ll draft a RB until round 4 at the earliest

  5. Joe Buscaglia mocked the Bills draft by trying to run a draft as Brandon Beane’s thinking. Here’s who he came up with.  Also he did simulate a draft using The Draft Network’s simulator:

You can read all of the analysis and his rationale below:

    https://theathletic.com/1722463/2020/04/03/how-i-would-draft-for-the-bills-if-im-brandon-beane/?source=shared-article

Round 2 - Kyle Duggar  S   Lenoir Ryne

Round 3 - Bryan Edwards WR  South Carolina

Round 4 - John Simpson OL Clemson

Round 5 - Lamical Perine RB  Florida

Round 7 - Charlie Heck OT  North Carolina

I don’t know how much I love the picks.  He said that Duggar would allow the team to basically be a Nickel defense and could help offset the loss of Lorenzo Alexander.

Instead of drafting Perine, I would rather give up one of the lower picks and trade up to take Zack Moss.

I am a Josh Allen fan.  I believe that he has the physical gifts to be a generational quarterback.  I also am aware of his weaknesses.

Now that Josh has one of the best trio starting wide receivers in the league, what does he have to do to show that he is the Bills franchise quarterback?

This is part of the reason why I liked the Diggs trade.  The Bills weren’t going to be on Jerry Juedy or CeeeeDeeee Lamb.  Even if they did,

rookie WR’s sometimes take time to develop.

    No excuses with Diggs

COVID had me thinking. With all the trade rumors and twitter posts about Watson in Houston, I have a gut feeling he would rather see FA than re sign there (but who knows I guess). The Texans would be foolish to not take the 5th year option.

If he hits FA in 2 years, would you rather get into a bidding war and pay him $40M per (guessing 2022 value) or keep moving forward with Allen, taking his 5th year option, to an eventual extension?

Unless Watson completely bottoms out over the next 2 years there’s no chance Houston let’s him hit FA.  This entire topic is moot and mute

He mentioned looking into trading for various WRs and some didn’t work out because the team wanted to trade to nfc ... something to that affect

Gotcha... It makes sense but I thought he might have been referring to a WR at the trade deadline last year.

Also wasn’t NE rumoured to be in on Hopkins but thought it was too rich?  That’s the only thing that makes me wonder whether he was referring to Hopkins.

It’s shocking how many Bills fans still defend Sammy to this day.  Here’s a fun activity - how would you rank the WR’s in the 2014 draft?  Is Sammy even a first round pick if you could re-draft?

Take his entire career including the time with the Bills and per 16 games played:  60 receptions, 893 yards,  6.5 TDs

Take his time since leaving the Bills (Rams and Chiefs) per 16 games:  54 receptions, 732 yards, 5.7 tds

This is over a 6 year, 76 game played career.  He has the physical talent to occasionally have a very good game...but he is what he is...a below average starting WR, or a decent #3.

But Sammy is still a great WR according to same Bills fans.

Also, Doug Whaley was a great GM ?

I hear what you're saying, but it doesn't concern me.

I look at New England, for instance. Last year, obviously, they weren't so great on offense. In the couple of years prior to that, though, it seemed like the amount of carries given to each back varied from game to game. If they were facing a lighter, faster defense, they'd pound it between the tackles with Michel. If they were facing bigger, slower linebackers, they'd toss it in the flats all day to James White or Rex Burkhead.

I want variety in the running game. I want a short yardage back not named Josh Allen. I want someone who, if 5 foot 7 Devin Singletary misses a stretch of games, can sub in and the offense won't miss a beat.

Attitude/confidence wise, I believe Beane and McDermott have been brining in team-first guys, not me-first guys, so that part doesn't concern me.

This is the same match-up based philosophy that Brian Daboll believes in.  I think we’re likely to see a back with a different style than Motor

Well, I see the chance to get a game-changing running back in the second round and Beane has not picked up any JAG veteran running backs. That last thing should tell us something.  It seems that defensive ends are either found high in the draft- 1st round, or are hidden somewhere and everywhere else.  The chart below suggests we would be as successful looking in the 4th round and UFA as in the second round. This year they are predicting  run on DE's, with 11 or so supposed to go before our #54 pick.  The list below shows that there is no year with more than two top DE's selected.

    1., Calais Campbell Jacksonville ………2nd round 2018      #  50

    2. Myles Garrett, Cleveland……………1st round 2017         #  01

    3. Cameron Jordan, New Orleans         1st round 2011        #  24

    4. Joey Bosa, Los Angeles Chargers     1st round 2017       #  03

    5., Danielle Hunter Minnesota                3rd round 2015       #  88

    6. Demarcus Lawrence, Dallas               2nd round 2014      #  34

    7. Frank Clark, Kansas City                    2nd round 2015      #  63

    8. Trey Flowers, Detroit                          4th round 2015       # 101

    9. Melvin Ingram, Chargers                    1st round 2012       #   18

    10. Dee Ford, San Francisco                  1st round 2014       #  23

    11. Michael Bennett, New England                              UFA 2009

    12. Olivier Vernon, Cleveland                            3rd round 2012         # 72

    13., Mario Addison Carolina(BUFFALO)                     UFA 2011

    14. Yannick Ngakoue, Jacksonville                    3rd round 2016         # 69

    15. Jerry Hughes, Buffalo                                    1st round 2010          #31

So. We don’t have a 1st round draft pick.  We are unlikely to get a #16 pick in the first round (avg of 1st round DE) anytime soon. There are 6 first rounders, only 3 second rounders, 3 third rounders a forth rounder and two UFA.  There are NINE from the first and second rounds and NINE from the third round and below.   We don’t need to waste that second round pick on a DE prospect.

    https://athlonsports.com/nfl/nfl-defensive-linemen-rankings

Again - this isn’t my choice but I’m trying to speculate on what might happen.  The exact round isn’t that important but as you pointed out, with a few exceptions the best DE’s are drafted in the first 3 rounds, which I why I think they will go DE in Round 2....or trade back into the bottom of Round 1.  I also see CB as a need.

I really don’t see Beane drafting an RB in the 2nd.  Maybe in the 3rd.  I think they’ll try to draft an undervalued WR in the later rounds.  Just my prediction

What TT lacks as a passer, he partially makes up for as a runner.  Pair Tyrod with a good RB, and opposing defenses need to be prepared to stop two viable running options without entirely being able to neglect the pass.

In 2016 when ALynn was calling the plays in Buffalo (after Roman got fired), the Bills offense averaged something like 26 ppg when TT was under center.  That's not spectacular but it's really solid - and significantly better than the 19.6 ppg our Bills averaged last year.

ALynn clearly knows how to maximize TT's unique skill set and work around his weaknesses.   If Chargers can get the right cast around TT, they could potentially score 30 ppg.   At least, that's probably what Tyrod's thinking when he talks about 'turning heads.'

I personally like Taylor and would love to see him get his day in the sun.

Meh....he’s a good runner but not Lamar Jackson-good.  He never was at that level and now it’s 3-4 years later. Teams with good defenses could figure out how to stile Tyrod pretty easily.  He has a good deep ball you need to watch out but he’s not going to pick you apart.

Tyrod is where he should be - a reliable backup QB that will win you a few games, then lose you a few games

He probably will turn some heads and everyone will talk about how great he is at not turning the ball over, but at the end of the day he doesn't have the upside necessary to do anything of note in the NFL.

Still, when you think about it, Tyrod is one of the better QB's in Bills history.

Here’s who have to thank for that:

    1. Ralph Wilson

    2. Buddy Nix

    3. Doug Whaley

    4. Marv Levy
