    What year you became a Bills fan and Two Bills Drive camaraderie

    Fan since 1963 (was 9 years old).  


    First Bills memory: Going to the Rockpile with my friend and his dad and sitting in what was then the 1st base reserve seats for baseball. Remember just the whole scene: green grass, blue Bills uniform tops and the craziness of extra points going into the 1st base box seats. Total chaos as fans fought for the balls. Fans yelling “yo, ho” in unison before Mack Yoho kicked off.

     

     

    Favorite memory: being at the 51-3 game and the pure joy of knowing we were going to the Super Bowl. LA couldn’t stop them in the first half and called timeout like a beleaguered basketball team.

     

    Favorite of all time: Thurman (honorable mentions: Fred Jackson, George Saimes, Tom Sestak, Bobby Chandler).

    Favorite now: Josh and Tre

    I think this is a big upgrade. Hoping they decide once and for all if they are going to run gap or zone blocking schemes. Previously they gave lip service to maulers but their biggest success in the run game and pass game was with more agile players that could move.  I get the sense Kromer will use the players to their best advantage. He’s been very successful as an O line coach and should help a 1st time O coordinator with his knowledge and planning in the run game.

    He’s also their backup right tackle. He fills 2 roles. I think I’d trust him more than Tommy Doyle if there is an injury to Brown

    Need a better quality, twitchier, bendier D end. At least one. The guys they have are good solid players and in his prime Hughes and likely Addison too (though I am not as familiar with him from his Panthers days) fit the bill. They don't grow on trees. Hendrickson was a great pickup by the Bengals in free agency and the Rams added Miller. Those kinds of investments paid dividends. 

     

    Did the Bengals not rush just 3 a lot and play 8 in coverage in the 2nd half? Mahomes looked more confused than pressured. His guys were not really open and the Chiefs, much like the Bills in the Super Bowl against the Giants, did not stay patient with a running game that was gashing the Bengals for 6-7 yards pretty much every time.

    As for me (I am assuming Dabol gets hired away and Frazier does not):

     

    1) (BTW I do not have Dabol replacement here because I believe moving on to to Dorsey is a fait accompli) - focus on d-line: Addison and Hughes are gone from the D-line rotation unless Hughes takes a very team friendly one-year deal. The re-sign horrible Harry, take the option on Oliver and do the best they can to find Lotulelei’s eventual replacement - I also think they seek to get a pay cut from Lotulelei but my guess is he will not make concessions - (I think top three draft needs in this order are: CB, Interior DL and interior OL)

     

    2) CB - they have to sign one veteran - probably not Wallace - and find at least 1 in the first three rounds of the draft

     

    3) Interior o-line - I think the Bills in the draft go with CB or IOL as #1 / #2 in draft

     

    4) Depth at TE (I think they find a really good value FA who wants to play on O with JA)

     

    5) Speed at RB - round 3 or later in the draft

    I agree with most of yours but would like to see them sign a FA or trade for a DE w/ some burst. Their pass rush was ploddy against Mahomes, though it's fine against the statue type QB's, who may well be mystified by what they are seeing in coverage and hold the ball a tick long. Anything to make it harder for QB's to break the pocket and buy time. They were so close to Mahomes a number of times, any one of which could have changed the game. Hughes literally was a step away on the quick pass to Kelce for the fateful gain at the end of regulation. If someone had slowed Kelce even a trifle or if Hughes was a touch faster he may not have gotten it off.

     

    I also see a veteran wide receiver to replace Sanders being in the mix. I'm not sure they want to wait on a drafted wideout given the window of opportunity they have now. Doesn't mean I'd mind them drafting one but think they might do both especially if Beasley's time is up here. 

     

    It'll be interesting to see what the cap casualties are here and around the league. I expect the Bills to release players and free up cap room. Even if it is not a ton, any bit might help. Buffalo should be a preferred destination for some productive vets released elsewhere due to cap problems. Even if the Bills aren't in play for the Davonte Adams of the world (and damn wouldn't that be a dream) there should be guys that can help them that aren't outrageously expensive.

    Looking at the film on the Cover 1 podcast, you can see several Bills players on the kick coverage team look at the sidelines after the kick goes through the end zone with their palms up clearly confused by what just happened. I get the sense the kicker did not get the message. A massive screwup then compounded by the worst, softest looking defense I've ever seen given the yards KC needed.

    Thanks for your help. Unfortunately don’t have Direct tv and Spectrum, my cable company, all it says is “NFL Football”. That could be anything but I’ll check in to see.

     Bryce Paup (DPY), Darick Holmes, Tasker as a WR, refs with cute little white gloves, Marv Albert and Chris Collinsworth, Thurman doing Thurman things, an O line I dream of the Bills duplicating and a Carwell Gardner/Bryan Cox fistfight in the 4th quarter just after the 2 minute warning. What's not to like. A trip down memory lane with a whole bunch of names on both teams that are legendary and others totally forgettable or an OMG I had no recollection of him till just this second seeing him. (Need to rewind it back to beginning I think)

    A Few Thoughts about the Falcons Game, in no particular order

    I wondered if Josh had an extra Red Bull pre game or played Anthrax instead of Sinatra. It was like Nolan Ryan from 5 yards away. To me, it also looked like many plays in the first half were off schedule and ad libbed. Almost nothing came out on time and in rhythm after the first couple to open the game. Was he confused? Was he just looking for big plays and eschewing taking the available short stuff and chain movers  he used so successfully the week before vs NE? It was baffling to me. 

     

    I was happy the O ran the ball well for more than the obvious reason that they showed they could do it. I also was happy it kept the Falcons offense off the field. I realize the Falcons aren't the Chiefs (I mean the Bills gave them 2 points and 3 extra possessions and they still only got to 15 points) but there were times when the holes to run through seemed ginormous and the receivers were open when Ryan bought time to get it there. I thought the 2nd quarter was really disconcerting on both sides of the ball. Just happy they won. Happy too to see how well Bates played. The line looks so much better with a guard that can pull AND be stout and anchor.

     

    Virgil I enjoy your write ups. That said, do what makes you happy. You don't owe us anything.

    1/2/22 Falcons at Bills

    The storm track and impact uncertainty grows more uncertain as the weekend progresses. The Weather Prediction Center has chosen a middle ground, bringing the center of the vigorous low right into our region by Sunday morning.

    If this early WPC track estimate verifies, it would bring milder readings into the mid 40s during Saturday with any mix turning to rain. However, colder winds wrapping around behind the low would change any precipitation to snow on a windy Sunday, as readings fall though the 30s. That would make for an interesting weather scenario as Atlanta visits Buffalo on Sunday.

     

    However, I have to emphasize again how much uncertainty there is on this storm system track. The last run of the ECMWF takes this low south of us, placing Western New York in its cold northeast winds Sunday morning, along with snow and possible blowing snow.

    On the other hand (don’t I often use that phrase?), the American GFS has a different idea. It takes the low well north of Toronto, keeping us on its milder side with rain Saturday night and spotty showers on a very windy Sunday, with some southwest gusts over 40 mph. Temps would begin falling by game time, but with the GFS, we would have missed the storm’s widespread snow.

     

    The Canadian GEM model also keeps the low north of us, but as far north. You may see why the Weather Prediction Center is choosing the middle ground. Independent of WPC’s thinking, the uncertainty and model spread leads me down the WPC path at this early point.
