This quote from Beane defines the entire draft strategy:

He is giving it to us straight. The Bills are in a rebuild year. So he went for all team captains. Guys that interviewed well. Guys that he believes set a new foundation of leadership in the building. He hunted for short term needs that fit the singular character profile he and McDermott feel comfortable with, at the expense of talent at premium positions. And he is telling the fanbase to temper our expectations without coming right out and saying it.

I'm not gonna grade a draft until we see how all the players turn out, but the overall philosophy shown this weekend is deflating and uninspiring.

Wasn’t this Belichick’s draft strategy…the one thing he sucked at? If he was a good GM they probably have 3-4 more rings.  IMO the major difference is that Belicheat was twice the HC and DC that McDermott is so he could overcome poor drafting.

I think this is a fair take.  But given the Bills picks, where in particular do you think they could have taken higher talent at more premium positions?

See the Eagles draft for reference of what strategy I recommend the Bills employ…BPA

I guess my thing is that Josh’s most successful season (2020) was with Cole Beasley playing at his best. We had the chance to duplicate that with McConkey and we didn’t do it.

McConkey can play inside and out, Beasley was a pure slot.

OP wanted thrm to sell all picks and get in top 20 and get one of those 3 top WRs thinking thst is the missing piece

this teams need to add depth…drafting safety and interior off/ def line isn’t sexy enough.

folks on here do not understand therr is a salary cap….

look across the league, the teams that have stayed good for a long time rely on youth/ picks because you need this picks to balance out the club salary structure.

This is true, but they also hit on their high end picks like the Eagles.  The eagles doubled up on CB and WR because they were the BPA.  Beane drafts for need, and that’s not a recipe for success IMO.

The Eagles have managed to win a Super Bowl, retool their roster, make splash move after splash move, and get to another SB with a different QB all in the same time as Josh, Diggs and Von while having an all-around more talented roster.

We are led by the Ghosts of the 2015 Panthers who want to have 9 DL depth players and force Josh to make magic happen throwing to Devin Funchess 2.0 and Ted Ginn Jr.

The expectations should be higher. Beane would be a goner the way he wastes top end picks if he didn’t knock the Josh pick out of the park

Facts!! The only reason Beane and McD still have jobs is because the Browns, Giants and Jets are dumb and passed on Allen.
