  1. My question is who is trading up this year? I wonder if Covid doesn’t severely limit the movement in the draft, and most teams just kind of stand pat. Unless a QB like Trey Lance or Mac Jones are there and someone wants to really go after it, I don’t know how much movement there will be at all.

of course I could be totally wrong and we could see tons of trades.

If the Bills want to get Diggs to restructure they will have to give him more new money up front (ie a pay rise). It think there is absolutely a way to do it where both parties get what they want. The Bills get some cap relief in 2021 and Diggs gets a pay rise to recognise he is a top 5 receiver and the 16th or 17th best which is how he is currently paid.

Yea, cover 1 did a great thing on the cap and mentioned Diggs in particular. Basically you convert his salary this season to a bonus, that converts $11M and Pro-rates it over the time left on his deal. At the same time you tack on

an extra 2yrs at about $20M or so, so that $11M becomes about $2.2M on the cap per year for the 5yrs of his contract.

This does all of the following:

-Diggs gets a check for about $11M when he signs this new deal.

-Diggs and his agent get to tout a 2yr extension with a $20M aav

-Bills get two extra years of their #1 receiver at a rate that will likely be a bargain in 4yrs.

-Bills save about $8M on Diggs cap hit in 2021.

  3. 1) He fits the scheme perfectly

    2) He’s a perfect character fit.

    3) we can create the money easily enough (Butler & Jefferson alone would save $13.3M)

    4) we have the need at the position

-The only question is if he’ll want to actually play in Buffalo, NY.

Green Bay can make the room, is a contender, and his his childhood team.

Cleveland could offer more money and is closer to his wife in Chicago, but not by much. And I’m not sure how much of a contender he views them as.

I think this move tells me the Jets may be set with Sam Darnold because, even though I know more QB's are available, I thought Darnold had Colts written all over him. In fact, I'd rather have Darnold than Wentz.

I think Wentz was the more logical fit for Indy because of his ties to Reich.

Darnold could still end up in Washington, Chicago or even Carolina. He could also end up in Houston but I think DeShaun ultimately ends up in SF or Carolina.

I'm not sure which draft LBs are faster than Milano, but I would use or 1st or 2nd rounder to replace Milano unless we already have a LB in waiting that we think can replace Milano.

We need a LB that can make Kelce work.  We have to bring in players to stop the KC offense.

I think they might go for a hybrid LB/S/Slot CB to cover TE’s. The defense was exposed in the middle of the field. I would believe they want to get longer & more athletic there.
Hamsah Nasirildeen is my favorite but could see a guy like Ifeatu Melifonwu from Syracuse or South Carolina’s Israel Mukuamu. All three also have great names.

    Curtis Samuel in 2020:

    - 70 snaps in the backfield (led WR)
    - 41 rushes for 200 yards (both led WR)

Even while doing all of that underneath, he led WRs with a 76.9% catch rate on deep passes (20+ yds downfield)

He would really add a different dimension to the offense even than Brown. He’s like a suped up McKenzie.

Him being a Panther also leads me to believe he’ll be on the Bills radar.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a run in FA at a hybrid like Curtis Samuel to replace Brown but also can add to the run game capabilities . Beane was there when he was drafted.

If I’m the Bills I’d offer a 2yr $15M deal. You can tell a guy like that he might get $1m-$2m more somewhere else, but here he’d be on a lights out, elite passing offense and be able to really add another dimension to a creative OC’s playbook.

I expect changes but I think the OL is going to be critical to them. I don’t think more speed at WR is going to be a priority. They have plenty of speed at that position, imo. That wasn’t the reason they lost the last game. Speed at RB on the other hand...

on the WR, I won’t be surprised at a John Brown/Kenny Stills swap for $ reasons and a player drafted mid rounds

I think speed at running back is key (Marlon Mack? Tevin Coleman? Matt Breida? All could cheaply add another element in the backfield).

I also believe finding more speed off the edge is a major need. They need to find someone with some burst to get after the QB.

highly doubtful they kick the can on players who are not considered long term core pieces

    most will not get restructued

this a long term roster building plan - not to be screwed up with knee jerk short term "fixes"

Well they can also do outright pay cuts. They did it last year with Kroft and DiMarco. I could see them easily saving $4m or so on Jefferson. I could see them doing the same with Matakevich as well and saving $1M-$2M

Just a little point here that while I think it's fair to believe the Bills saw Quinton Jefferson and Butler as stopgaps, Addison was signed to a 3 year $30M contract with $13M fully guaranteed.    We could move on from him this year at the cost of a $4M cap hit, but that probably leaves a big DE shaped hole.

Butler isn't signed past this season, and we can move on from him for a $1M cap hit

Q Jefferson likewise (pretty sure his numbers are incorrect in Overthecap listing $0 cap hit; Spotrac shows an amortized signing bonus of $1.5M)

I think their respective contracts indicate something about how McBeane view them

My reading of the tea leaves is that we may cut Butler or Jefferson, but not likely both.

I wish someone covering the Bills would do a deep dive into our DL.

I believe Cappacio is doing his state of the roster on his podcast,  “SalSports...and stuff”, so He’ll get to the DL sometime this next week.

Also Joe Marino on “Locked on Bills” is doing the same thing and will also likely get to the DL one day next week.

Maybe...but from Buffalo's standpoint can we have even 5 million tied up in a WR 4 in Brown's current role? Especially with large dollars to a KR/WR In Roberts, and McKenzie needing to be replaced via the draft or FA. Not to mention all the other needs...and Diggs and Allen new contracts looming.

I hate to bring this up, because Roberts was so clutch during most of the year, but ghosted in the playoffs, and in fact played terrible in the Colts game. It may still be worthwhile to explore the John Brown/ Roberts/ Mckenzie Role being replaced by one dude. Not crazy to say a Kaderius Toney kind of guy could come in and be that.

    I think that’s a valid point.

I also don’t think it’s crazy to wonder if Toney would still be available at 30. I think by draft day he’d require a trade up.

  12. Speculation, not really anything substantive.

I mean he literally said “was a fantasy non-factor for much of the 2020 season” and I get that’s a reflection of his stats... but quoting it as his fantasy numbers just seems kind of... simple.

I’ll admit I haven’t really been much of a Buscaglia fan. He has a big base because of his work on local tv and now on the athletic...

but he almost seems kind of PFF’y.

”I found this stat and since this stat exists it means this player is good/bad, no matter what other stats you show me or film I see”.

I think we see a lot of pay cuts.  I think it’d be kind of harsh to cut some of these guys.  Hard to judge a guy negatively off last year.  And these guys could’ve decided to opt out.  I think you find a way to keep them at a reduced number.

Not only that. I think in these economic conditions, guys like Jefferson and Addison know they won’t get much on the open market, so a pay cut is in their best interest.

I think you are being clouded by fan-speak.  The same people who would have cut Bass, traded Klein for a box of donuts, and now want to cut Singletary.  This all from the Bills best squad in years.

The OP is suggesting there is a way for the Bills to have a lot of continuity - to bring back the core of the gang that just won 15.

I'm hoping they can bring back most and add a good veteran TE (to go w Knox) and a good pass rusher in free agency, and then shore up everything else in the draft.

I think continuity is a big part of it.

I also think they want to keep as much depth as possible. And you continue building that systematic depth by retaining your own and allowing them to teach the system to the new guy and so on and so on.

the one guy I’m conflicted on is Brown. I think like Tompsett says in the pod, it just depends on their medical evaluation of Brown. Is it something he can come back from and was just a minor thing? Ok cool, come on back for one more go.

or was it a bigger issue that could likely linger and limit his explosiveness (which is such a huge part of his game).

If its the latter, they cut him. If it’s the prior, they try to negotiate some kind of pay cut/extension with a lowered cap hit.

  14. It’s 2hrs long, but within the 1st half hour or so, you really get a great understanding of the Bills cap situation. As they go along you can see that if the Bills do everything they need to do, they could keep Brown, Hughes, Hyde, Addison, basically only cutting Butler and maybe Jefferson (if he won’t take a cut), and build up close to $40M in cap space.

By far the most informative information regarding our cap situation and offers more than just “need cap space = cut that guy”.

I think he's a possibility but not at $2m-$3m.   I think he could be had possibly on a one year $8-$10m a year deal which should be taken in a heartbeat.  Cutting Addison and Butler can more than make up that amount.

I just don’t see him getting that much after putting up 3 sacks in his two seasons of play.

    5 minutes ago, Rc2catch said:

There’s a reason nobody signed him long term. There’s a reason he had to take a late deal last offseason.
He has always been about top dollar and I don’t blame him for that. I can’t envision he’ll sign a really cheap deal anywhere though

Agreed. I’m just wondering if he’s gotten to the point, and more so the league (with the cap being lowered) that they won’t pay for a guy who just has a name with no production.

I believe a 1yr $2M deal with maybe $1M guaranteed is something worth looking into for both sides

  16. Had literally almost zero production this year for Tennessee (literally zero sacks in 8 games played).

But he’s an athletic freak who’s been near 10sks multiple times.

McDermott discussed players coming here and “becoming the best version of themselves”.

All that being said, could he come to Buffalo on a one year, $2m-$3m prove it deal? He’s an elite talent who’s never been able to put it all together and imo is a perfect fit for the Shaq Lawson role in our defense.
