    Interesting.

As far as fan expectations, fans will always expect first rounders to contribute strongly, starting their first year.

As far as fan expectations being realistic - Beane has a draft pattern of trying to overcompensate for drafting late in the first by choosing high ceiling/low floor kind of guys.  Rousseau was an example of that - a player who had a lot of raw physical talent and had shown potential, but had actually had played very little college ball.  15 games, that's it.  Rousseau looks like a decent contributor now, but it took him a while to get there.

Elam IMO was an example of that - a physically talented fast guy, who needed to take a big step in his actual coverage skills to play at the NFL level.

And of course, the ultimate example was Josh Allen.

Anyway I see Keon as another of Beane's "high ceiling, low floor" rifle shots.  He's big, he can box out like a basketball player ('cuz he was one) - can't coach size and physicality - and he needed a lot of work on his route running and release moves.

I agree with most of what you said outside of him being a first round pick.

He was a second round pick, first of the 2nd’s but 2nd nonetheless. People should tamper their expectations based on that alone.

    Dion, Knox, Kincaid

    Golf buddies:

    Darnold, Kyle Allen, Christian Kirk

Oh… I thought you were asking who from the message board is going. The only one i know for sure is @teef

  3. I wouldn’t care if he came back except that he just had a big time injury. It takes forever to come back from that fully and he wasn’t being used all that much when he was fully healthy and Brady employed the everyone eats offense.

Seems like a waste of time really. The amount of balls he’d get wouldn’t justify the potential drama and amount of money he’d want.

If he came in groveling and said he’ll be a worker bee and didn’t want all that much money, I’d take him back.

  4. I’m guessing teams are trying to get a 1 year deal to see how the shoulders hold up, and he’s trying to get a longer contract with a sizable chunk in guarantees.

Makes sense for him, makes sense for the teams. Tough spot for him to be sure. In the end if he’s not offered a 2 or 3 year deal he’ll have to sign the one year and depending on how much he knows that might be his last one. But now I get why it’s taking so long.

  5. I’m actually happy that the offense didn’t get more yards. I’m not convinced it would’ve been easier for Bass.

He missed a PAT so being closer wouldn’t have made a difference, imo. In fact, I think being as far out as it was made it almost a little less stressful on him as no-one would’ve blamed him for missing that one.

He's somewhere between an A and B.  Definitely a top five GM in the league.  To answer your questions.  His best move besides drafting Allen was trading for Diggs.  His best draft pick so far in terms of value was Taron Johnson.  Knox, S. Brown, Shakir, Benford, Bernard, and Davis are also in the running.  His biggest miss was Cody Ford despite us all loving the trade up at the time.  I would say Elam but the book hasn't been written on him yet.  The Basham pick is still infuriating.  His best free agent signings were Morse, Brown, D. Williams, and Beasley.  His worst contract given out was unfortunately Von Miller.

I agree with most of what you said but weren’t two of his first moves signing Poyer and Hyde. Or do I have that wrong? If he did, they make the list.

I'm not going to take the time to look this up, but I recall a thread from a few weeks or months ago. According to it, Josh Allen had the second-most clutch drives from 2020 to today. I'm pretty sure Mahomes had the most. People would be tempted to give Mahomes' name as an answer to your question, because they've seen him succeed in clutch situations even more often than Allen.

During the early and middle parts of this past season, Mahomes' supporting cast didn't do a particularly good job. And guess what? Mahomes looked ordinary. Not special. Later in the season, as well as the postseason, the supporting cast improved its play, and Mahomes looked like he'd returned back to his old self.

There was a time in Allen's career when, briefly, he was set up for success, at least on offense. His OC was Daboll. His OL wasn't much for run blocking, but at least it was reasonably good at pass protection. Singletary at RB, Knox at TE, Diggs, Beasley, Davis, and Brown at WR. With that supporting cast, he achieved the highest QB rating in NFL postseason history. That includes scoring the go ahead points in a postseason game against the Chiefs, with 13 seconds left.

Was that performance by Allen an outlier, or was it typical of what he'd do if set up to succeed on offense? It's hard to know the answer to that without more data. I can't think of any other times in Allen's career when he was set up to succeed nearly as well as that. At this point, any comparison between Mahomes and Allen risks being apples to oranges. Almost all the data we have involves Mahomes having a good/reliable supporting cast, and Allen having an inferior/unreliable supporting cast.

That’s fair. But at the same time so is my question. Regardless of apples to oranges, I’m giving you that choice right now. Who are you choosing?

I know who I’m choosing. And guess what? My favorite player on this earth (Josh Allen) is not it.

It’s nothing against Josh, I think he’s great, the most entertaining player I think I’ve seen in my lifetime. Mahomes, imo, is better at staying cool. Is that really that bad? I mean, the guys great, what is so wrong with him being better at something?

    Hmm.

Take a guy like Alex Smith. He was a reasonably good QB for the 49ers. A respectable starter. Then he found his way to Kansas City. In his last year with the Chiefs, he averaged 8.0 yards per attempt. That's better than normal for Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Did Smith suddenly start playing a lot better than he had with the 49ers? Well, maybe. But if he did, it didn't last long. In his next two years, he was QB for Football Team. His yards per attempt was 6.6, then 6.3.

Another, perhaps more likely explanation was that everything in KC was set up for the QB to look good. Great offensive coaching, in the form of Andy Reid. Scheming guys open, so that the QB has ridiculously easy throws. One of the top three TEs ever, in the form of Kelce. Good overall offensive supporting cast. Pat Mahomes inherited all that when he became the starting QB for the Chiefs.

Compare that to Josh Allen. The offensive line he had his rookie year may well have been the very worst in franchise history. His two starting WRs were even worse than the OL: Kelvin Benjamin and Andre Holmes. For most of his career, his OL has been decent at best. In the most recent playoff loss to the Chiefs, Bills receivers had 160 yards of dropped passes. The last time he had an OC who schemed guys open, Daboll hadn't yet sat down with the NY Giants. Then there's the fact that Allen's defense has never generated more than 2 stops in a postseason game against the Chiefs or the Bengals. Several other defenses have generated 6 or even 7 stops in postseason games against the Chiefs.

The Chiefs have done everything they could to set Mahomes up to succeed. The Bills have done a lot to set Allen up to fail: dropped passes, failing to scheme guys open, and a defensive collapse literally every postseason game against the Chiefs or Bengals. Despite all this, Allen has kept the postseason games against the Chiefs close. Take Pat Mahomes away from the Chiefs and give them Alex Smith. Take Josh Allen away from the Bills, and give us another Alex Smith. You do that, and the Chiefs are steamrolling the Bills in the playoffs. It's not remotely close at all.

    Okay…

but ask yourself this question, and be 100% honest with yourself. You have 30 seconds to go down a field and win the Super Bowl. You have a choice of Allen or Mahomes? Are you picking Allen?

My original post is not an indictment on Allen. Allen has Mahomes beat in almost all the categories for me (physically). I just think Mahomes has the ability to stay cool in any situation. He’s proven it time and time again.

You’re not turning on Allen or your Bills fandom by acknowledging the dudes really good at keeping cool.

  9. 27 minutes ago, Gregg said:

Mahomes is the best QB in the league, but Allen is way better than Tua. Allen is #2 at this point.

I don’t know. Obviously Mahomes is great but I can’t say he’s better than Allen.

There’s things Allen can do physically that Mahomes can’t. There’s nothing Mahomes can do that Allen can’t.

Then again Mahomes stays cool under all circumstances, maybe that’s what he does better. Allen’s got the physical, Mahomes has the mental.

Dumb for him to hold out. I'm sure Miami's FO really doesnt want to give him $50-60M/year.

Maybe that's the issue. The offers from the Dolphins are lower than he expected.

If I were the Dolphins, I'd let him walk. But as a Bills fan I hope he gets himself a big contract there.

“Dumb for him to hold out” because Miami doesn’t want to give him a big contract?

That’s the entire reason why he or anybody holds out.

I’ll break it down… players want as much money as they can get, teams want to give that player as little as possible.

Player holds out because the team needs him now, team is then forced to give player more than they’d like because they need him to play.

Is the player as good as the contract will imply. Not typically, but for the team it’s either pay him, or find a new qb when your team is built to win now.

Just so I’m not accused of plagiarism, I got this from nfl hold outs for dummies.

Yeah these 1st rounders are usually engaging/endearing with their attitude when they arrive.   But as they fail to reach expectations they talk to the media less and blend back into the woodwork.     Oliver, Rousseau, Elam.........people were gushing about these guys.   Ed started getting chatty again once his play improved and he got extended.   Hopefully Rousseau and Elam break out this year and get back to being those engaging personalities with feel-good stories they were right after the draft.

Yea, they’re talking because they’re given the podium when they’re drafted. Once games start it’s all about Josh and Diggs. I think you’re also taking away from Keon here. None of the players you mentioned have his personality. They were pretty bland to be honest. You’d better believe people will still want to talk to Keon even if he doesn’t have the prolific start we’re hoping for.

This is the calm before the storm! If anyone thinks that Beane is just gonna let this whole Diggs thing go down without him having something up his sleeve than they are sadly underestimating him. Oh it’s coming, there’s no doubt in my mind. There’s a couple of speculations that I came across and 1 or 2 of them makes perfect sense so if if it’s either one of them than I’m quite confident it’ll be something of that magnitude. Look at Beane’s track record, he’s not afraid to make these shocking decisions and/or trades. It’s coming!

Thanks for the heads up, Tipster!

  13. This kind of stuff is so silly imo. The fact that this is an actual thing an adult person is contemplating makes me kinda sad to be honest.

You have some crummy humans, you have better than crummy humans, you have some great humans.

You think somehow we just happened by the best of the best regionally here in Buffalo? Ridiculous.

All fandoms have the good and the bad. Same as any group including human beings.

There’s no best. There’s no hierarchy. We all like a thing and that’s that. The fact that I have to even write this down is icky.

Also, I have a hard time believing the OP about ho many instances there were of bad Bills fans behavior. KC fans have become worse than Pats fans in the arrogant a-hole percentage and that’s saying a lot. I would imagine many if not all of them were egged on in some capacity.

Just another guy that moved away from Buffalo trying to look cooler than he is, imo.

    Here's an idea...

How about comparing Dalton Kincaid to other Rookie Tight Ends, as it's one of the slowest developing positions.

    Dalton Kincaid:

    66 Receptions, 589 yards, 2 TD

Travis Kelce (didn't play rookie season):

    2nd year -- 67 receptions, 862 yards, 5 TD

    George Kittle Rookie:

    43 receptions, 515 yards, 2 TD

    Mark Andrews Rookie:

    34 Receptions, 552 yards, 3 TD

    TJ Hockenson Rookie:

    32 Receptions, 367 yards, 2 TD

    David Njoku Rookie:

    32 Receptions, 386 yards, 4TD

    Zach Ertz Rookie:

    36 Receptions, 469 yards, 4TD

    Jason Witten Rookie:

    35 Receptions, 347 yards, 1TD

    Antonio Gates Rookie:

    24 Receptions, 389 yards, 2TD

Nice! Thanks for doing the leg work. This is awesome to see.

So… more yards and receptions than all of them except Kelce who was in his second year. Looks pretty dazzling to me!

You are already in the playoffs so your choices are:

    1. Play your best players for a shot at the AFCE banner, get a home playoff game but lose your starting QB, RB and WR
    2. Play your second stringers and lose the division but give your best players a week's rest for a road playoff game

You have a chance to go farther in the playoffs resting your starters against the Bills. I'd go option 2 unless you're sure winning the division gives you an easier opponent in your first playoff game.

Yeah, but this is coming from a fan of a team that’s been the afc east champion for a while.

They’re not thinking the same way.

  16. McDaniel is going for the AFC east crown.

Thus would be huge for him. He’s always trying to get his guys up for Bills week (the wish it was colder shirt, the 🤔 disrespect) He knows that until they beat us they’re second best.

He also knows that as long as they win this game, it doesn’t really matter what else they do. Obviously they’d like to go deep, and win it all. But the division title is still improvement over last year. So they can lose the first game in the playoffs but still have something to hang their hats on. It’ll still be an accomplishment.

We’re getting everything they’ve got. This is the game that was circled with a red marker when the schedules were released.

  17. We’re like the Colts during the Patriots years. I liked Manning, and I wanted them to get over the hump. I’d actively rooted for them.

I feel like a lot of people dislike the Mahomes/Chiefs and we’re the good guys to their bad guys.

If we won, the intrigue would die some, but I think most people would be genuinely psyched to see it play out.
