It's a complicated game of rock paper scissors.

Rules help push things along, but defensive coordinators and the generally higher level of athletic ability on d catches up, and then new offenses come along and the cycle begins anew.

Right now, D's are really good at pressure, coverage, and run blitzing.  They all seem to be poorly equiped to stop a power run game.  There is also something to be said about a very balanced d like the one we have, where if guys make tackles we can defend anything.  I think that why mcd likes waves of dline and super athlete mbls, they can deal w most anything.

I'm a big fan of how these things trend and change.  I really got into it back when I played and pitz came in hot w the zone blitz concept and the 3-4 vs 4-3 stuff.

This is exactly what I would say. League becomes a passing league? Ok well then teams are going to focus on building good pass defenses....so then you have to run the ball to have success again.

So I guess the question is when does Allen not need a mentor and he, himself considered a vet?

Definitely. And to agree with you, I'm sure the team would also gladly add another talented QB if they found one (whether he was labeled #2 or #3).

I think another reason why there aren't very many great backups around the league is just the simple fact that it's probably really hard to stay sharp in that position when you never play. I suppose that's also why the vet is valued, since even if his physical skills and reaction time deteriorate, at least he has the mental capacity to line guys up.

You don’t need a vet backup. You can definitely draft a developmental guy to better fit your starting QBs skill set.

From what I can tell, the backup QB is quite involved on the sideline in assisting the starter. Also from what I understand, Barkley has been very helpful to Allen’s development. So I would say these factors are actually more important than how the backup plays himself. A young QB probably needs a vet, and an experienced QB probably doesn’t as much.

Josh is making some of the same mistakes now that he made nearly 2 years ago.

Are we sure he's progressing and "learning" ???

His completion % is more what I'd call regressing to the mean.

He has absolutely improved drastically. Look at the touchdown to interception ratio as an example. Sure he still makes some of the same mistakes, is he supposed to fix literally EVERYTHING in one season? Baby steps, one thing at a time.

  5. I’m honestly shocked at all the complaining here. This young Bills managed the Patriots quite well yesterday, and Tom Brady is still the best game manager in the NFL. Look, basically no one beats the Pats year in and year out, it just sucks more if you play in the AFC east and have to play them twice every year. This Bills team has exceeded expectations for this season by a long shot, and in the last four games came up with two big wins and two very close losses against the Ravens and Pats. I think next year this team bumps it up agains the Pats.

Two Words:  {Marcell Dareus}. Get paid...Get fat... Get Lazy.. Get Cut or traded....and the beat goes on.

Marcel Dareus had tons of issues from the day he arrived....tons of family issues, losing loved one to shootings, and from what it seemed he was always battling depression. Given his talent level and the fact that he was a good guy at heart with a lot of troubles, it seemed like the team stuck by him hoping to get him through his problems and reach his potential. I even remember some sideline videos of vets telling him that he could be truly great if he committed himself.

Personally I’m not sure that his decline had anything to do with money, as I would guess that with all the depression he didn’t even care what was in his bank account.

What a sad story really, as he was an UNBELIEVABLE talent. If his head was on straight he would probably be headed to the HOF.

Maybe, and he was non-existent the prior 3 years as a 1st round pick.  PASS on him PLZ.

Shaq had serious injury problems when he first arrived, lost his first season completely and then i would guess still wasn’t football ready for year 2. That’s not an easy way to start your career. Given that he has seemed to make strides last year and this year, I would say he may just be a late bloomer and on a great track now.

McD knows better than any of us what his value is going forward. Whether or not to resign him is going to depend on the value....and the value might be very good because of his bad start. D-line always needs rotation, so resigning him doesn’t declare him a full time every down starter, and it seems like we could do a lot worse.

Would be so awesome if Fitz beat them so we got the division.

Yes, I hope he has the game of his life. Though history suggests that even if he does, he will lose his nerve at the very end and blow it somehow.

Yep - Bills win out and Pats lose 2 of 3 or we end up tied with them and Pats lose to Mia. Division will most likely be up for grabs week 17 if we beat them.

I entirely ruled out the possibility of Miami beating them, but hey, life is full of crazy surprises.

goes to division records i believe.

These are the tiebreakers, according to NFL.com.

If the Bills beat the Pats and the end up with the same record, we’re down to tiebreaker #3. Just took a quick look and it seems the Pats have us beat on common opponents because of the Browns and Eagles.....so there’s no hope to win the division unless we win out the Pats drop another game.

    1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
    2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
    3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
    4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
    5. Strength of victory.
    6. Strength of schedule.
    7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
    8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
    9. Best net points in common games.
    10. Best net points in all games.
    11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

  11. "Be happy with what you have" comes to mind. Allen is succeeding with the Bills and continues to develop. And "fit" is not just about offensive scheme, it's also about personal, human connection. When McD and crew met with Josh Allen, I'm sure they felt good talking with him and working with him. Think about when you've interviewed for a job, often the candidates are all capable of the necessary skills, but the question of personality is something bigger.

Forget the media hype about LJ, he's definitely doing a great job but we're just in year 2 with both of these guys. It will probably take 10 years to look back at this with any clarity to compare.

Out of all of his year here, we failed to win consistently and aside from the one play off appearance he didn't see much of it, period.

The year after he leaves, we have this fantastic season and the best start in 20 years. I wish he would have been able to be apart of something like this.

I'm sure he's happy for the organization but I can't help but wonder if he's a little bitter that in his 13 years here, we couldn't put this type of team on the field with him.

I feel bad for all the great Bills players that signed extensions during the rough years and remained loyal. Kyle is definitely in that group.

  13. Human beings aren’t robots. Have you ever had a bad day or felt a bit “off?”

He has been a very steady and reliable kicker for the Bills, so there is nothing to complain about. You would expect him to make the first kick, while kicks over 50 yards are a risk for any kicker.

Find a replacement, and surely the new kicker will have a bad game sometime too.

We all wanted him to work on and get better at his short route passing and we understand the reasons why but we also didn't expect his deep-ball to disappear and have to "come back in time."

I can’t say for sure, but I would predict that they have devoted very little time in the offseason and weekly preparation to the deep ball in favor of reps to work on his short game. Like he said and we could guess, he overthrows because he’d rather not underthrow into a turnover. I mean I get the frustration because it seems like since the guy has a huge arm he should have no problem connecting on those. But if he doesn’t work o that, it’s not going to be reliable. Again, just my guessing here....

  15. Being an NFL Quarterback is DEMANDING to say the last. The amount of responsibility for such a young guy to carry is really enormous. They are working on his game, it’s a process. The base game of any NFL quarterback has to be the short routes, because moving the chains is the most important thing. They’re focused on getting him to do this and make good decisions. Josh Allen seems to be a mentally strong guy for his age, and I think I’ll get through that. He has all the power necessary to throw the deep ball, so I’m not worried about that....it will come back in time.

As for the fumbles? It’s simple, this is a case of teams having more tape on a guy they didn’t have before and studying his weaknesses. This happens to every young QB in their early development - the weaknesses get exposed and then they have to fix the problems.

  16. Before the season began, no one expected that we would be a 5-1 team, or a 6-2 team, or a 6-3 team. After the hot start, the fan base quickly got spoiled.

Nearly the entire offensive personnel is different from last season, plus a 2nd year quarterback. Rare exceptions aside, it’s normal to need some time for this thing to come together. Let’s also not forget that the cap situation is EXTREMELY healthy, with 90 mil free space next season. If this team makes the playoffs, I think that already exceeds pre-season expectations for this year. We’ll be in good shape going into next season to build something.
