  1. Some good coverage of the jury challenges this afternoon:

Trump challenges jury candidates 1, 2, 3, 6 for cause.

Challenges for 1 and 3 are denied. Challenges for 2 and 6 are granted.

Trump then uses peremptory challenges to strike jury candidates 1, 3, 5, and 10.

By the end, they have seated six members of the jury: candidates 4, 9, 12, 14, 17, 18. They are sworn in and told to be ready to come back on Monday.

The case against Trump is a joke because the records violation of which Trump is accused is a misdemeanor, on which the statute of limitations has run. It is only a felony if the records were falsified to cover up another crime. That is what Bragg alleges. But what crime? Bragg’s indictment doesn’t say. Presumably his theory will be that the payment to Daniels was a campaign finance violation, only it wasn’t. The payment was legal and no false filing was made with the FEC. Trump has not been charged with, let alone convicted of, any such violation.

    • NYS law tolls the statute of limitations when a defendant is out of state (CPL sec. 30.10 4(a)(i))
    • NY AG alleged that the falsifying of business documents was done as part of a scheme to violate election laws (Statement of Facts, paragraph 2)
    • The payment would have been legal had it come from the Trump Campaign and properly disclosed (which would have ensured this case never happened) but the whole activity was done to prevent that from happening. Arguing that failure to properly disclose payments to the FEC isn't a crime because they never filed what they were supposed to with the FEC is quite the position.

  3. Looks like Trump was having trouble understanding the judge's actual instructions. But I suppose we cannot let the facts stand in the way of some good rage baiting.

Trump is seething about missing Barron’s graduation. Here’s what the judge actually said

"Before jury selection commenced, Mr Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, asked Judge Juan Merchan if the court could adjourn on 17 May so Mr Trump could attend Barron’s graduation. In New York, criminal defendants must attend trial unless they apply for a waiver, which Mr Trump has not done.

Judge Merchan said he could not rule “at this time” but noted that if the trial was “running behind schedule” they would not be able to accommodate.

Despite no firm ruling on the matter, Mr Trump still purported that the judge made an unfair ruling preventing him from attending his son’s graduation."

  4. Well this has got to be embarrassing for anyone who fell for the obviously wrong tweet about a million people registering to vote in Texas without a photo ID this year.

Will they admit that they were wrong, or just roll their eyes?

Statement on Voter Registration ID Requirements

“Austin — There have been recent and inaccurate reports about the voter registration process and ID requirements in Texas. Please see the statement from Secretary of State Jane Nelson below.

"It is totally inaccurate that 1.2 million voters have registered to vote in Texas without a photo ID this year. The truth is our voter rolls have increased by 57,711 voters since the beginning of 2024. This is less than the number of people registered in the same timeframe in 2022 (about 65,000) and in 2020 (about 104,000).

When Texans register to vote, they must provide a driver license number or a Social Security number. When an individual registers to vote with just a SSN, the state verifies that the SSN is authentic.

While federal law allows individuals to register to vote without a photo ID, Texans must actually show proof of ID to vote. The 1.2 million figure comes from the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) website, which is supposed to report the number of times states have asked to verify an individual’s social security number. The SSA number is clearly incorrect, and we are working now to determine why there is such a large discrepancy."

I used to fly in and out of O'Hare often and if they were where 90 and 94 meet the mess would be impressive. I can't believe these morons believe these stunts will get people on their side.

As far as I can tell, it was 190 into O’Hare but the traffic blocked up to the 90/190/294 junction.

Causing people to miss their flights isn’t going to endear anyone to your side. Seems like this group was probably pretty insular in their thinking.

Whenever I see one of these things where some group blocks a road I wonder why this is not false imprisonment.  But I'm not a lawyer.

Let's bring in the resident lawyer @ChiGoose.  From a legal perspective, why is this not false imprisonment?

Not my area of expertise, but I don't think false imprisonment or related charges would be successful. Being annoying and causing traffic isn't the same as imprisonment or restraint. People can always get out of their cars and walk (as it seems many did in this instance). A quick glance at the IL code around false imprisonment doesn't reveal an obvious charge.

Many of the protesters did get arrested and charged, however: 40 protesters arrested outside O'Hare Airport for blocking traffic; forcing people to walk to terminals

I imagine the charges end up being something around obstruction or interference with traffic but we'll see when the charges are released.

As a sidenote: my wife unwittingly got caught up in this. The traffic backed up pretty severely and she ended up being quite late to work this morning. That's part of a pretty major highway intersection.

This coming from someone who still believes/maintains Biden didn't know he had classified material all over his house for years.  Spare us.

The only reason you libs care about Ukraine is because of what happened with Trump, Biden and Hunter.  You never gave a ***** about it when Barry did nothing after Russian annexed Crimea (because he had more flexibility).

Do you ever get anything correct?

You seem to live in a sad little bubble protecting yourself from reality because you cannot handle anything that might challenge you just a little bit. Projecting your ignorance on others seems to give you comfort even if you’re wildly wrong.

If ignorance is bliss, you’ve gotta be one of the happiest people around.

So trimming back all the hyperbole from the perpetual outrage machine...

Iran sent over 300 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles at Israel.

Israeli air defenses, supported by the US, UK and France, shot down 99% of them.

The results are, some minimal damage to an IDF base, and a little girl in critical condition.

... I'm sure Israel is quaking in their boots right now Iran, you really showed them!

That’s why I think this was retaliation for Israel’s attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

Iran has to respond to save face, but does so in a way that Israel can defeat the attack to prevent escalation.

People like you are responsible for Ukrainians dying.

The rest of us simply want to stop feeding them to a wood chipper to provide fuel for our proxy war.

Do you feel any sympathy or remorse, at all, when you see so many fathers, brothers and sons being forced to fight a war that many of them want no part of?

Notice the propaganda videos of the Ukrainian resistance only streamed across our televisions at the onset of the war.  Now we see videos of men trying to flee Ukraine, only to be detained and forced back into a forever war that likely ends with their life being sacrificed for what.. what’s the end goal now?  When does that end goal come?

How many are you ok with being fed to the machine?

No wonder most of the Bush era neocons now have become flag bearers for the new Democrat Party.  They were never conservative, they just valued war.. and they’ll flip sides and parrot the ideology of the party of war.

The amount of logical backflips you have to do to arrive at the conclusion that the people who want Ukraine to be able to defend itself are the ones responsible for them dying is insane. I cannot imagine what kind of media diet someone with this idea has.

Putin is responsible for Ukrainians dying. Putin has said that there’s no reason to stop the war when he’s winning because Ukraine is running out of ammo. The people who are responsible for Ukrainians dying are Putin and the people who prevent Ukraine from pushing his forces back by denying them support.

And fwiw.. I don’t even know if a down the middle 24 hours news org could even succeed in America now.  Sad to say.

There is zero market for this. It’s why TV news is just all bad.

The Iranian response is wholly excessive.  The US is already taking some drones down.  In a way, Iran finally sticking their necks out may be a good thing.

I’m not making any judgment on it. I’m just saying that if you destroy a country’s embassy, you better be prepared for retaliation.

Though I will note that doing the retaliation in a way that allows Israel to defend against it (like drones taking hours to get there) could help prevent further escalation

It's less about blame than what you said about 2nd and 3rd order effects.  I've always believed people should think first before they act.  It's how I live my life.  If a person walks through a bad section of town at night and gets mugged/injured/killed, do you blame them for what happened?

I just didn't think the juice was worth the squeeze, seeing as how it reduced the abortion limit by just a week from JCHO's own limit.  And it certainly wasn't worth it considering the outcome.

That’s just a long load of nonsense that amounts to: who gives a damn about the constitution? Let states ignore it.

You are dreaming if you think none of this connected. Acosta got the job in the Trump administration for a reason. He was also considered for Jeff Sessions replacement for a reason.

Trump had Barr kill Epstein for a reason.

Not only did Trump fly around w Jeff - he hosted parties w Eps at Mar-a-Lago.

Stop being so fkn naive Mr Independente!

Slick's a rapist as well.  Is it a sign of how desperate the Dems are that they had him campaign for Biden, when ignoring him would have been the best move and made them not look like hypocrites?

It’s a sign of something that I routinely point out here: the average American does not follow politics closely.

To many, the 90’s represent a better and simpler time. Slick Willy was president then, so they associate those feelings with him. It’s wrong, but it is what it is.

I'm not obtuse.  You just don't like the question or that I turned the  "2nd and 3rd order effects" back on you.

As for the Gestational Age Act being "unconstitutional," many have argued that Roe was.  And the then and current makeup of the SCOTUS was one that could potentially overturn it.

And what I don't get is that, from what I've read, JWHO only performed abortions up until 16 weeks.  The GAA wanted to limit it to 15 weeks except for danger to the mother.  It wasn't worth it and again I wonder if they had to do it all over again, would they have?

No, man. I get the game you’re trying to play, you’re just very bad at it.

If JWHO didn’t challenge the law, then an unconstitutional law would be in effect. If you want to blame them for the outcome of challenging a blatantly unconstitutional law, then what you’re actually doing is arguing that states should be able to pass unconstitutional laws.

If California passed a law that nobody under 35 had a right to own a gun, the NRA would likely challenge that as unconstitutional. If SCOTUS took the case, and instead of deciding the question asked, proclaimed that nobody who wasn’t a member of a regulated state militia had a personal right to own a gun, would you blame the NRA?

Your line of questioning implies you would, and I think that’s just stupid.
