Never a terrible player, but definitely an overpay from day 1 that snowballed after opting out of 2020.
Still can't wrap my head around how he opted out an entire season due to COVID and then never got vaccinated. Was he the only NFL player that opted out and then didn't get vaccinated?
Think it's safe to say he used Covid as an excuse to sit out and get a free $150K (or whatever it was they paid opt-outs).
He was gone this year either way, but his dead cap would've been much easier to manage if he didn't sit out.

Trent Murphy. His worst roster decision was also keeping Trent Murphy as a 3rd-4th DE at nealy $10 million cap hit in 2020.
Paid Trent+Star as much per year as Von. Hopefully Beane has learned from his mistakes of overpaying for non difference makers.
Having a SB ready roster to attract talent should help this as well.

Is there any reason we got a pro bowl guard for so cheap?
Pro bowl isn't a great indicator of how good someone is. He was a vet with name recognition.
Similar to the Sanders deal, 34 year old vet looking to win on the downside of his career.
Don't really save much money between D. Williams dead cap and the cost to sign Saffold, but the hope is that he fits Kromer's scheme better.
Could also be that they plan on running the ball more which is Saffold's strength. Williams was better in pass pro last season.

One of those deals where you knew from the start he was overpaid.

I don't think anyone should be comfortable having Dane Jackson as a starter entering next season. The two times the team faced above average passing offenses the second half of the season (after Tre went down) they were torched.
Hopefully a round 1/2 rookie and a vet will be brought in most likely in to supplement the position until Tre is back.

Pass rushing unit:
Miller/Oliver/Phillips/Rousseau
Much higher ceiling than previous years' groups.

I’m sorry if this has been answered…
I see the contrast is essentially 3 yrs $53 million. Chandler jones got 3 yrs $52.5 million. Which contracts structure is more team friendly and hoe does Vons extra years work?
The trade-off is that Von's 1st year of the deal will be a low cap hit for us so we can fit it into our limited cap space (spreading the signing bonus over 6 years instead of 3). We will have dead cap on the books (how much remains to be seen) for the last 2-3 years of the deal when it's likely he'll be cut because he is no longer worth the money.
Chandler's deal is more friendly to a team that can afford his large cap number this year. And obviously the Raiders don't have to worry about any dead money if he remains productive and healthy for the next 3 years.
Assuming we get 3 years out of Von we could be looking at dead cap hits of $15M in year 4, $10M in year 5, $5M in year 6 (pure guesses). Obviously not ideal but Beane is banking on the cap going up dramatically over the next few years so those numbers will hurt less than they do now. Still, opportunity cost is that we will most likely miss out on signing some of our own and other FAs as dead money starts to pile up in future years.

Can anyone name the player that was a teammate of Bruce Smith’s, and later went on to be a teammate of Von Miller’s?
Champ?

I hope Miller goes off but I think that is a very fair number to set the over/under at.
Yeah I think that's fair. Also think he won't be playing the same % of snaps he has the last few years. Should be selective in how we use him to hopefully get the most bang for our buck when it matters most.
Eg. Regular season games vs the Jets there's really no reason for him to play >50% of the snaps.
This is the situation where the DL rotation works most advantageous.

Amazing, exactly what we need. Hopefully he has plenty left in the tank.
Need to keep him fresh and healthy for the playoffs most importantly so wouldn't be against bringing in one more DE on a min deal like Hughes or Shaq.
Interested to see the dead money the last 3 years of the deal. We'll feel the pain then, but if we can land a SB it'll be worth it.

I would be more bummed if we had missed out on FAs because the FO thought they had a firm $$ commitment in place. But as others have mentioned, if we can use this room to sign another (better) player like Patterson or Jones, then great.
I do wonder if they would have pivoted and tried to sign Levi for pretty much the same deal if McKissic hadn't agreed in the first place tho..

Also had JC Jackson to Chargers. So go figure sometimes independent sources are not as reliable as the Big Time Reporters yet
He tweeted the NYG and Bills were talking an Evan Engram trade... when Engram was a FA? Doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Guy has 7 followers. Anyone can put random guesses on twitter

Cannot validate this guy not on of the main media types
Considering this guy said the Pats are signing Chark, safe to say he is not reliable

TB is $15M over the cap and can sign Gage for $30M/3 and trade for Mason making $8M next year...
Tom Brady is paying the Bucs to play for them. He loves the game that much.

Wonder if the emphasis on having more athletic lineman this year points to more RB screens in the offense, something McKissic excels at.
