  1. Trade Edmunds (not because I think he's a bad player), use the pick we get to draft his replacement, use the $12.5 mil savings to re-sign McKenzie, Bates, Wallace, Phillips, and if possible Hughes.

I really hope the Bills don't restructure too many players to free up space, that just pushes the problem to next year when we have even more FAs we need to sign and Josh's contract jumps up even higher.

  2. I don't really understand which team takes the cap space on a 5th year option... but if the other team takes the salary I'd rather see Beane trade Edmunds and use the draft pick they get to replace him.  I'd rather have Star, Beasley, $4mil, and the draft pick.

Otherwise I could see them cutting Star and/or Beasley.  Although we don't save a ton cutting Star, his dead money is a lot less the following year.  The year off for Covid kind of messed that up a little bit.

The only players on the roster that the Bills save any real money if they cut are Morse, Star, Williams, Beasley, Klein, Feliciano, Matakevich in that order.

However it plays out, I would like to see McKenzie back with the team next year.

  3. Last year and this year I liked the Bills' chances at winning a Super Bowl more than I do next year.  I've been thinking for two years that 2022 is likely a year where the Bills will regress some.  But not because of Allen's contract.. because I think Beane went a little too spend happy (especially last year) and wasted a lot of money on players like Jefferson, Butler, Norman, Kroft, etc.

As it stands, the Bills only have $9mil in cap space and need to pay for their 2022 draft picks, are 12 players short to get to 53 on the roster, and have FAs Hughes, Wallace, McKenzie, Trubisky, Boettger, Jones, Phillips, Zimmer, Neal, Bates to sign.  That's not enough to even re-sign who we have, let alone go out and have some big flashy FA signings.. unless they kick the salary cap can down the road which I really hope they don't do.   This is why I'd try to trade Edmunds.. not because he isn't good.. but because he's not a game changer.. and I'd rather have the $15mil in cap space and a high draft pick to draft his replacement.

But two things can be true at once, and even if the Bills do regress a little next year, their Super Bowl window is open as long as Allen is our QB.  We should have Allen, Diggs, Davis, Milano, White, Hyde, Poyer, Taron, Knox on this team for the foreseeable future.   Not a bad group to build around.

All I want to see the front office do next year is fix the O-line.  Protect our franchise QB so he's not taking the kind of hits he took this year.  If they can do that, I don't really care if next year is a 9-7 type year.  Fix the O-line and that'll open our next Super Bowl window from 2023-2030+..

  4. When I was using the ESPN playoff machine, if the Bills finish 3-1, after putting in all my best guesses on the other games, if NE won this game the Bills got in, if I put the colts as the winner, the Bills didn't.

I'm not sure who I'm rooting for, I think I probably won't watch the game.

If the O-line didn't look like dog crap and Tre White weren't out for the year, I'd be rooting for the Colts, but as it stands, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills drop one more somewhere before the year is over.

  5. I think the Bills should try their best to trade Edmunds this off-season.

He's an average LB who is going to be looking for an elite LB contract and I don't think he's $10mil/year better than Klein.  The Bills have very limited cap space next year and could use the $$ and picks.

It probably won't happen, but if it did, does anyone know which team would be responsible for his salary next year since it's guaranteed?  And any guesses what sort of compensation he would fetch?  A 2nd maybe?

  6. This is a weird week.  I don't know that I agree with a lot of these.  I guess it depends on if you're rooting based on what gives the Bills the best chance at the #1 seed or what gets the Bills get into the playoffs, because I think a lot of these outcomes would hurt the Bills' chances of making the playoffs more than help.

What do we do going forward ?    Does he take a draft off so someone else can bring in some decent linemen ?

No, it's not time to bring out the pitchforks.  Beane is doing just fine.  He's not the best at drafting but he's not the worst, and he got the most important pick of his career 100% correct.  He's very good at managing the salary cap and drawing up contracts that give the team lots of flexibility every year.  He's not the wizard people sometimes act like he is but he's an above average GM who has built a solid team.  He's the best GM we've had in a long time.

Colin Cowherd said that the officiating in our game was the worst performance in years and the team should be suspended. The amount of bad holding and personal fouls called should have decided the game if not for our dominance.

I've had a day to get over it and am still upset about the officiating last night.  Refs have a tough job in real time so I always try to give them the benefit of the doubt.  I usually roll my eyes when I see someone say the NFL is the WWE... but that's really how it felt last night.  I can't think of a game I've ever watched where the officiating felt this one sided.  If the game had been a close one (within 7 points) the refs would have almost certainly decided the outcome.  It wasn't just bad calls, it was completely inconsistent calls that always seemed to happen at the worst possible times for Buffalo.. over and over again all night.  That holding call on Morse.. I still don't understand what someone thinks they might have seen.  KC seemed like they got most of the breaks from the refs when we played them in the AFCCG last year too.  This Bills team feels like they can beat anyone, I would hate to see them lose a close game in the playoffs to the refs..

Is there anything to actually do about this?  Can one of the reporters that reads this board ask McD about it in a press conference?  Can the Bills file a complaint?  Would that do anything?

Or just move on and focus on next week's game against the Titans?

  9. I guess I'd go with Boettger if we could get him on a cheap ~2 year deal.  Maybe save some money if he wins the starting job this year?

The only other player I think I'd consider extending right now is Hughes.

But Beane has already extended all the most important players IMO.  I'm fine if he doesn't extend anyone else.

I don't like the idea of extending Edmunds.  I think Edmunds is a better player than some here give him credit for but I am not convinced he's worth $15-$20mil/year.

Abra Cadabra Ala Kazam...any thread can be turned into an irrational Edmunds bash.

I don't think I was being irrational or bashing Edmunds.

I think Edmunds is a decent linebacker but maybe not someone I would pay $15 million/year during a cash strapped year if that means not being able to re-sign other players.

Spotrac says the Bills have ~$2mil in free cap space next year assuming a salary cap of $192.5mil if they pick up Edmunds 5th year option.  Even if $192.5mil ends up being a little low.. that wouldn't include Ertz' 8.5 million this year, whatever he'd sign for next year, their draft picks this year or next year, and includes only 40 out of 51 players under contract.  They also need to resign any of their free agents next year that they want back which is most of their Dline (Hughes, Addison, Butler, Phillips, Zimmer) and includes players like Trubisky, Boettger, Wallace, McKenzie, Taron Johnson, Ferguson, etc.

I don't know how the Buffalo Bills fit Ertz, Edmunds, and whichever of those players they want to bring back under the Salary Cap unless it goes up more than Beane sounds like he's expecting.   I think a top tier TE could help Josh take this offense to the next level, and since Beane is going to have some tough decisions to make next year, Edmunds at $14-$15mil/year in my opinion is a spot where the player doesn't match the value of the contract.

I don't know if it's realistic to think they can sign Ertz and either pick up Edmunds 5th year or tag him and still re-sign the players they need to next year.

  11. Wow, looking at the NYG roster I'm really glad we have Beane...  I don't even know if they have enough players they can cut to fit this new contract under the cap.. every big contract on their team has tons of dead money..  And if they restructure.. they're already in terrible cap shape next year too.
