  1. So the team that has the better running games wins...

I expect C.J. AND Freddie balling today.

That why we win today, no excuses

Probably more like the team that turns is over loses. Bills have lost many fumbles this year, and I fear the trend continues against an angry LeBeau designed defense that has been put on notice by Tomlin. Bills are still a little too soft to win many road games. Street fightin' Steelers are gonna turn this into a slugfest, where the Bills would prefer a finesse game.

Kinda funny that today is an "easy" game, yet the Steelers are essentially our statistical equivalent.

This is only an "easy" game for those who are deceived by the W-L record. The Steelers have a better QB, better coaching staff, and a winning tradition at home that the Bills could only dream of. Our QB is also coming back after a month off vs. an agressive 3-4 zone blitzing D that we have shown to have trouble with. Not to mention this franchise rarely wins road games @ PIT, or any other difficult venue for that matter. Steelers 24, Bills 16

  2. Hitting the deep balls is gonna be crucial to EJ's development. We have some major speed at WR and EJ has to lead them on the throws so they can go get 'em. The key to the deep ball is throwing it earlier so the ball doesnt have to go as far and its easier to lead WR. Tuel TD pass to Flash is perfect example. He threw that ball WAY earlier than all his other long pass attempts and gave Goodwin room to run under the ball and simply out run the DB;s NOT go for a jump ball and even if caught, hes tackled right away.

Underthrowing deep balls also leads to alot of WR getting nicked up cuz WR are usually laying out for ball like Woods and Goodwin did last week vs KC.

While there is no one "key" to hitting a deep ball, Hackett seemed to have the right idea last week. A "go" is the easiest route to hit, as you can just pet some air under it and let Goodwin go get it with his world class speed. It requires little thought on part of the QB (just read the safety, drop back and release), and requires the least arm strength (good for a weak-armed guy like Tuel ). Also, play-action and throwing deep on early downs will increase the success rate. We know EJM has a big arm and can easily hit the deep throw. He just needs to develop some chemistry with Goodwin, and probably err on the side of Goodwin's speed, meaning a bit deeper throw is better than a more cautious throw that MG will outrun and have to come back to or wait for. Put it where only MG can get it. The Bills have also seemed to adjust how they run those deep routes, farther away from the sideline to give more room for the QB to place the ball rather than hugging the boundary which requires more precise timing and a supremely accurate throw. From a physical standpoint, EJM should be more successful at deep throws than any other QB on the Bills roster. There is no magic behind completing deep passes. Just chemistry, good route design, and dialing them up at the right time for the defense the opponent is in.

I don't even think the Bills force OT with E.J. against CIN. That said, I agree they would have beaten CLE and KC with E.J. under center.

Not sure why you think the Bills offense would have been incapable of taking the Bengals to OT with EJM at the helm. They may not have even needed it, as the game may have been completely different. The offensive futility @CLE after EJM went out could mean they likely would have won the game if EJM finished it, and EJM probably does not make the tremendous gaffe at the goal line vs KC, so that seems a likely win as well.

  3. well, at least we will stop hearing give "Easley a chance."

Unfortunately, I think the coaching staffs reaction to the Woods injury will be to continue with their inexplicable love affair with TJ Graham. I believe he will get more snaps in Woods' absence, and continued futility will result. Speed is nice, but not that effective when combined with questionable hands, inability/unwillingness to fight for the football, and fumbling. Easley has proven his worth on special teams, and is cut from a different physical cloth than the rest of the Bills receiving corps. Give him some consistent snaps to show his worth, not just the odd play here and there. He may end up being more of a matchup problem than Graham due to his physical stature. Graham's speed is probably respected by opposing D's, but they seem to understand that he isn't much of a threat to actually complete the catch and a good hit will probably separate him from the ball.

  4. The Jets lost by 40 to the Bengals and got blown out by the Titans. Sorry, they are not that good. Bills beat them at home last year and should be able to again. Same goes for MIA.

Football is really about matchups. You can't go by wins/losses or even what teams beat which. The Jets are a BAD matchup for the Bills, but not for every team in the league. They play a physical style that we don't respond well to. Our OL and DL can't block theirs. KC by all accounts has an excellent DL that gives most teams fits, but the Bills usu. have their way with them and did again on Sunday outgaining them 2 to 1. We don't block zone blitz, blitz zero schemes well and lose the LOS to the Jets on almost every play. They tackle, block, and hit better than we do. It doesn't mean the Jets will beat every team we do, just that they usually beat us. They generally outcoach us in very aspect as well. Rex Ryan has brought a lot of the OLD Baltimore Ravens street fight football mentality to the Jets, and its a type of football the Bills look like they want no part of after about 5 minutes.

  5. Another point of view would be not which TE can we get, but who can we grab to neutralize opposing TEs. That seems to be more of a problem for us rather than giving EJ another receiver (when it seems he has plenty and Woods should be a stud next season).

It's a problem for everybody given the NFL rules in the passing game. That's why the TE is such a big weapon if you can find a guy, and the Bills are late to the party. Most DB's can't cover 6'7" basketball players. At least not one on one, those guys don't exist in NFL defenses. We need a TE way more than another db. You just can't cover 'em

  6.

odds are low that the Pats would be in a position to rest their starters for that final game. They're tied with Indy now for the 2 spot, and one game ahead of Cincy who they lose the tiebreaker to.

They'll probably have to win that last game in Foxboro. So, my expectations are sadly nil already.

BB has historically not rested his starters, even when the opportunity has presented itself.

In my OP I did say that the Jets game was "a very tough one". However we do get them at home which will be a big advantage if the RWS is super loud that day. We'll also have Gilmore and Byrd this time around. I could see interceptions coming from Geno and the Bills winning that one. The Jets are a legitimately good team. But they can be beat when they're playing on the road with a crazy and intense crowd.

The crowd can be great and may effect their offense somewhat, but the Jets usually kick our a$$e$ in the trenches on O as well as D. We just don't match up with the horses they have on the lines very well. I'd side with history here and say we lose to the Jets at the Ralph.

  7. I just love how Bills fans consistently underrate the Jets; a team that regularly punches us in the face by the way. EJ played a horrific game in the first matchup, and got punished by their D-line to boot. Oh and by the way, they have the #1 rush defense in the NFL...they certainly have the horses to neutralize CJ and Fred. Why anyone thinks that game is a sure win is beyond me.

People are going off their off-season assumptions that the Jets would be a circus, which stemmed from the 2012 Sanchez/Tebow debacle. The jets have an excellent coaching staff and a stout defense that changes games. Even with the mediocre QB'ing that they've gotten out of Geno Smith, that team can win games. They are ahead of the Bills in every aspect. The Bills rarely win a road game of any consequence. Shelve the playoff talk for 2013, that ship sailed on a Thursday night in October. The Bills have all of one win since September, and it was about a minute away from being another road division loss. Kudos that the D made that huge play @MIA, but I don't know if they've registered a takeaway since. Even if EJM starts, I kind of expect he will have regressed slightly or at least look like he's dusting off the cobwebs a bit. Hopefully EJ can show significant progress by season's end, but the playoffs are not a realistic chance at this point.

  8. I don't think the league conspires against the Bills, in particular. But, I do think they conspire to promote favorable story lines to sell tickets and ratings for big game match ups. And having KC undefeated going into the Denver game is a big deal. Every Sunday, there are multiple calls in multiple games that favor a better storyline outcome. These calls don't necessarily ensure any particular team wins, but they certainly make it easier.

The Bills being in a small market, with no good rivalry, with no good story to promote ratings, get the short end of most all of these highly subjective calls. Ask any true Denver fan and they'll tell you all about the number of favorable calls the Broncos are getting this year.

I don't believe that at all. While the NFL loves a good story, I believe the fault lies with their Officials and grading system. The Officials know they are being watched, and consciously or unconsciously tend to make favorable calls for "good teams". On replays, they tend not to overturn unless it is 100% definitive. It just easier to justify in their mind that a "good team" player made a good play. The "bad team" guy probably didn't, was holding, interefered with th WR etc. The ball was only visible in part of the replay, so he upheld the call on the field. I really hated the first official calling it a catch and the official further away overruling him. That has to stop, but it looked like a catch.

  9. From the booth: Chiefs at Bills

So now it’s third and goal, and the Bills kept their “11” personnel on the field. They lined up all three wideouts to the right side, T.J. Grahamicon-article-link.gif and Robert Woodsicon-article-link.gif far right, with Stevie Johnsonicon-article-link.gif in the tight slot. The play appeared to be designed to give Tuel his first look at Graham, who crossed paths with Graham outside in an effort to pick each other’s defender off momentarily. But unexpectedly, Chiefs DB Sean Smith froze at the line of scrimmage, leaving Stevie Johnson uncovered in the end zone.

The snap to Tuel was slightly low, which probably meant the rookie QB felt hurried to get the throw off. Instead of looking at a wide open Stevie Johnson, Tuel threw immediately to the spot where Graham was headed. That’s where Smith was standing, and the rest is history.

Yes, TJG ran a pick play with Woods. While the low snap may have distracted Tuel, I contend that he panicked when he saw the overloaded look to his left pre-snap, knew it was a blitz, and decided he would throw to Graham (as the man coverage would dictate that Smith was going to vacate that spot to foll SJ) before the snap occurred. Maybe he rushed it due to the low snap, a better snap there and he might have seen SJ slip into the middle uncovered. He would have gotten clobbered as he threw it, but got the TD.

  10. I like EJ's leadership, which is the most important thing. I just hope his accuracy throwing the football improves.

Yep, he has the leadership, mental qualities you want and a lot of raw physical ability. He needs to work on accuracy for sure. He especially needs to watch his mechanics in the face of a strong rush (like he may see vs PIT) and not get sloppy. You know Le Beau is watching that Jets film of the Bills OL/EJM against all those blitz Zeroes. We pretty much stunk up the joint, and can expect more of that defensive style for PIT. That is something EJ must correct, but not uncommon for a rook QB. Check out his often-compared counterpart G. Smith the last two weeks. Some pretty horrendous stuff there, taking sacks, inaccurate passes going OB. The Jets just have a much more dominating defense than the Bills, and can shut down the better QB's in crunch time.

  11.

Bottom line is that that play was never designed to go to the slot. Ever. You can't throw to the slot out of that formation against that defensive alignment.

    GO BILLS!!!

There was nothing special about that defense. It was man coverage across the board, you throw it to whoever beats his man. Could be x y or z. They claim SJ was the 1st option. Perhaps. The pick run by Woods/ Graham appeared to be the most obvious 1st option as that defender should have followed SJ on the clear out leaving TJG open on the slant. Maybe they think SJ 1on 1 with anyone is the 1st option, but normally TJG would have been uncovered as the pick w/Woods rubbed off the defender.

  12. if Peyton Manning was the QB of the Bills, we would be 7-2 or better.

this team is already good enough, (even needing upgrades at LG, TE & OLB/DE) that we are one franchise QB (Top 10) away from being a playoff team.

I love E J Manuel, but he is NOT a franchise QB based on his small body of work. he could become one, but I doubt it. I see him topping out around the 15th best QB in the league, still not good enough. Thad and Tuel no way they ever become Top 10.

Since 12 teams make the playoffs (and there is even talk of expanding the playoff format) you clearly do not need a top 10 QB to get in the tournament. Or even to win the superbowl for that matter. I don't recall Peyton Manning looking like a HOF'er after 5 games either. He threw so many INT's early many questioned the pick. Not that EJM will be anything close to Manning (odds are he won't) but you get the point. It's waaaaay early in EJM's career, and the jury will be out for probably another season or 2.

  13. EJ gets sacked. He has a slow release and hesitates. Sorry.

He hasn't taken many sacks. His release was the fastest of the 2013 draft class according to sportsscience, that actually measures such things in a scientific way. Most rookie QB's are guilty of the being hesitant on occasion due to the "rookie treatment" being thrown at them by Def. coordinators. The data don't back up your claims, sorry.

Gee, thought I was the only one who thought Hackett has been weak. Glad someone else sees the same game I see. He definitely has to find a different way to call plays on the goal-line or the same pattern will continue. 3-6 and no excuses

I've railed against Hackett's overly conservative play calling frequently, but I thought he called his best game to date vs KC. He kept them off balance, yet continued with runs when the KC D wasn't stopping it. Called an interesting pass to SJ off a read-option look and gave Tuel go routes for deep throws to keep things simple. The goal line play( that ended up a pick 6) was actually a nice design and as easy a read as you can make for a QB. A run there and I wouldv'e probably been screaming at the NH for being predictable. Crazy that his best called game to date and 2 horrendous turnovers collided to steal a win from the Bills.

  14. I suggest we give BigCountryBills a high ankle sprain and see if he can run on it, let alone amass 155 yards in an NFL game against the league's top defense. For over a month now Spiller has been playing through an injury that normally takes 4 to 6 weeks of rest to recover from. Questioning Spiller's heart in this situation is just asinine.

You speak the truth. Why do I get the feeling that poster would be hospitalized after one play on an NFL field?

  15. Yesterdays white out was an epic fail. Either Buffalo Fans don't know what the color white is or the organization calling for a white out in 30 degree weather is like Tuels interception on the 1 yard line...Just Clueless!

Most folks in our climate don't buy white winter coats. Most folks don't wear T shirts to football games with temps in the 30's. This was entirely predictable.

  16. Biggest thing I'm worried about is a letdown. It will be a coaching challenge to have these guys up for the game after dominating KC in most aspects of the game yesterday. Perhaps Marrone and Co.'s biggest test as a staff.

    GO BILLS!!!

Bills don't play consistently well enough to have a "letdown" by definition, anyways.

  17. Have you watched these same 9 games. Outside of a Carolina choke, a Flacco 5 int melt down, and a Miami fumble we are a 0-9 team. Who cares how close we keep the score. We have been destroyed in crunch time of the 4th quarter.

Umm, how exactly are games decided in the NFL then? If you took away all of the Pats wins, they woudn't have any, right? Most NFL games are not blowouts. You can say most games came down to a play here or there, often in the final minutes.

Our defense would be good if we had a real QB. We need them to make more game changing plays, but they just can't. When was the last time a corner made a play? McKelvin couldn't pickup a fumble yesterday, we lose.

Yes, the best defensive players are usually Quarterbacks.

  18. Problem is EJ has been around 9 games. Don't think for a minute Marrone & Whaley are pleased with his brittleness. They want & need a guy who doesn't go down every 3 games. Manuel is INJURY PRONE. Not all humans are built to take the pounding an NFL QB must endure. Manuel will get hurt more often than a starter should. His development will be hindered. He's a great backup but has proven he can't be a reliable starter.

The guy is like 235 pounds and 6'5 ". He's hardly brittle and wasn't exactly hurt on a routine hit. The guy dove at his knees and foot caught in the turf. I doubt the Bills staff is as reactionary as yourself. We've seen QB's go down for the year on lesser hits the past few weeks. In that VERY GAME, even. Alonso pulled up, hit the CLE QB in the shoulders and the guy blew out his knee! Be serious.

  19. Not having Randy Moss to throw to anymore is what ruined Culpepper's career.

Yeah, plus he got fat and slow toward the end there. I remember Bills D sacking him a bunch of times @Mia one year. Was so slow even Ryan Denney sacked him. I think they said he had the slowest dropback/release time in the NFL next to Leftwich at that point.

  20. EJ is an injury prone QB. He's played 6 games counting preseason & has sustained 2 separate knee injuries. He gets hurt 33% of the time.

In college EJ was destroyed his RS senior year at Florida. Jameis Winston is proving what a real QB can do as a RS freshman. It makes me so angry we wasted a draft pick on this garbage.

Many QB's have been injured early in their careers. It was hardly a catastrophic injury. Rosters also change in college football much faster than the NFL. Can't really compare Winston, it's a different team. Anyway the book is far from written on a QB after 5 games. We won't know for sure on EJM for a few seasons, probably.

  21. I read this. We suck, we are getting worse not better, and we have only 2 home games left. The Bills are so bad right now they would lose to every team in the AFC besides Jacksonville. They beat a bad Dolphins team outside of that they've been punch less since September.

Not coincidentally, that game was the only one since September that the Bills D forced a turnover of any consequence. TL wasn't very good in that game, the Bills D sealed a win that was about a minute away from a certain L.

  22. With the Bills AFC record likely 6-6 after being 9-7, odds are they wouldn't get in. Playoffs are realistically done.

Either EJ can suddenly show he's one of the best 10 QBs in the league the next 2 months, or lose every game and try again for a QB.

I doubt EJM will look anything like one of the top 10 QB's in the league after a month on the sidelines. He wasn't to begin with before he got injured. I also doubt we lose every game, and doubt even further we draft a QB in the first 4 rounds of the 2014 draft. Probably somewhere in between, say 2 or 3 wins the rest of the way. Maybe a 5th round QB to develop. Everyone's always at such extremes..either he's the next Luck or a complete flop. Rarely are things so black and white. I'd be surprised if EJM didn't look a little rusty out there when he returns, he's hardly a seasoned veteran.
