  1. IMHO, Alex Smith would be a slight upgrade. He is without a doubt a game manager and not a franchise QB. You pretty much know what you get with him. I myself would not advocate picking up Smith. The slight upgrade simply isn't worth it. I'd rather go with a stop gap QB like Hoyer or Moore until we can find a franchise QB.

  2. The level of devotion to Tyrod by some here is mindblowing to me. Any attempt to enter into discourse about any alternative is set up on viciously.

I like Tyrod. I think he is the best QB we have had since that one good year of Bledsoe.... but come on people. He has shown nothing to suggest he should be beyond questioning.

Why do some people get so aggressively defensive at the mere thought the Bills might move on?

I think Bills QB discussions are very likely to bring out many different opinions and emotions. Some very rational and some not so much.

  3.

Who was the last career backup QB who was traded for a 1st round pick?

Not sure garapolo quailifies as a "career backup." Just curious what do you think he's worth? I saw Bill Polllian on ESPN saying he is worth a 1 and a 2 or 1 and a 3. I almost fell out of my chair in disbelief but after listening to his rational he made sense. I myself would give up our first round pick for him in a heart beat.

  4. I don't care how they score their points... not one bit. But even given their point scoring exploits this year I don't think Tyrod is a franchise Quarterback.

GunnerBill, I always respect your post and your knowledge especially when it comes to the QB position. IMHO, TT doesn't look like a franchise QB. In a previous post by Alpha, he made some very valid points that I strongly agreed with. In short, I do believe the Bills can win and go to the playoffs with TT under center. At this point, I am a starving fan wanting to see a Bills playoff game.. How sad it that... There are plenty of other reasons we didn't win more games besides TT. I am very conflicted with the whole situation. At times, I want to cut him and move on and at other times I want him to stay. Both options are not optimal.

  5. People forget about Cardale Jones. He's your developmental QB with big upside. This is why I hate this notion of drafting QBs every year. We treat them like toys from last Christmas. Want them so bad, then want a new toy next year.

Realistically, his big side will likely never come to fruition. I don't think you can bank on Jones becoming the elusive franchise QB.

  6.

    Total Horse Hockey WEO nonsense!

I don't understand why you are having a difficult time understanding WEO's point? He is SPOT ON. Its refreshing to hear the truth even if its not what we want to hear.

IMHO, just illustrates how dysfunctional the organization is from top to bottom. No cohesiveness.

  7. Here is what walter football website says

1/9/17: I surveyed teams around the league to see where their initial draft grades were for Watson. Two playoff teams told me they had third-round grades on Watson. One said it was on the low end as a third- to fourth-rounder. Another playoff team told Walt that they had a third-round grade on Watson. Two other teams said they had second-round grades on Watson. Another team thought that Watson still could be a late first-round quarterback, similar to Teddy Bridgewater, because of the dire need at the position across the NFL.

In this draft analyst's opinion, I would grade Watson as a third-round pick for the 2017 NFL Draft. Watson has been off with his accuracy this year, displaying poor ball placement, especially when going downfield. He has missed a lot of potential touchdowns as a result. Watson's performance against Louisville confirmed the accuracy and ball-placement problems we've seen all season. He hasn't dominated, and his play is not that of a top quarterback prospect. All of this illustrates that Watson still has room for improvement with his field vision, ball placement, and accuracy. He did finish the regular season playing better, but that doesn't make up for the struggles in the first two-thirds of the season.

Also, Watson is undersized compared to your average NFL starting quarterback. On top of that, he plays in a college spread offense that doesn't correlate well to the NFL. Thus, he's going to need to learn working under center, operating the huddle, footwork, and not being a running quarterback. There is no doubt that Watson has great intangibles as a hard worker with good character off the field and leadership in the locker room.

This it not a ringing endorsement to pick him at 10.
  8. I don't get the thinking that Watson is a top 10 pick, and even one worth trading up for (and giving away the farm in other picks). There are QB prospects worth all that, but I don't see them in this year's draft class - and few pro or media scouts seem to either base on what I've seen in the preponderance of reports and analysis. No question Watson is a worker and has been a winner at the college level. Can't argue with that. But his measurables are essentially that of Tyrod - the latter is 6-1, 215; Watson is 6-2, 210 or so. (A couple of sites have him at 6-3 but this is likely generous - we'll see for sure at the combine). He has had issues with accuracy and decision-making, and his field vision may be no better than Tyrod's when he gets to the NFL. Let's not get suckered by the splash or "next big thing" - the grass is not always greener as we well know. And, then to throw him as a day 1 starter onto a team with few reliable receiving weapons, issues at pass protection, and a porous defense, and it is not a good recipe for success for a young QB (the running game is a positive but not enough). Like most or maybe all of the QB's in this year's draft, he would best sit behind another guy to learn the game (running a huddle, going under center, footwork, etc.). Teams need to be built as much FOR a future quarterback as AROUND a current or new one. Somebody like Prescott - as surprisingly good as he is or may be - was able to step in because he had so much built for him (or Romo, really) already. He was very fortunate in that regard.

I think going QB at 10 in this draft class would be foolish (which of course means that is exactly what the Bills will do). Improve the defensive secondary, the receiving corps, even the linebackers, that's where the plums are in this draft class. Take a QB like Peterman (who btw beat Clemson this past year), or even Kelly in a later round, keep Tyrod, and begin building a team FOR the success of a better, future QB.

Thanks for listen I don't see a franchise QB in this draft.

Good post. I really don't see a franchise QB in this draft. . I don't think Watson, Trubisky, Kiser, or Mahomes are worthy of the 10th pick.

  9. I don't like the idea of a tank, to end up at #1 next year, bexcuse our roster is top veteran to do that approach... but I would be VERY interested in moving back in the 1st round this year, just enough to aquire a 1st round pick next year (maybe to #23ish?) and then using our 2 first round picks next year on moving up from our 6-12 range we will likely be picking in, to get our guy.

As a fan, I don't like the idea of tanking either. Almost seems unethical. However, it does have merit. The colts did it to pick Luck and NBA teams do it often. The idea of tanking a year to land a franchise QB for the next 10-15 years seems to be a great trade off. However, no sure thing a college QB will turn into a franchise QB.

  10. This is pathetic. More concerned about the attention from the media, than the product on the field.

How has the product on the field been for the last 17 years?

Are you the Ice from the 1990's TBD? Your irrationale post makes me think: Yes.

No that's not me. I know my point of view is in the minority. However, I really don't thnk its irrational. Johnny football can be a very sericeable backup and maybe more. I.don't see anything wrong with liking a little media attention.

This is pathetic. More concerned about the attention from the media, than the product on the field.

I am concerned about the product on the field. Your assumptions are incorrect.
