  1. Watching old games from the late 80's and early 90's is a similar experience.  The game is so different.

My son tries to engage my in debates about who the best players of all-time are and he obviously always skews to more recent players.  I often remind him that all of those old QBs got absolutely abused in ways that the modern guys don't have to deal with.  The guys they were throwing to got abused too either because they were allowed to be held all over the place or because you had safeties whose entire job it was to kill you if you went over the middle of the field.  We gnash our teeth about Taylor Rapp right now. He'd be an absolute lightweight of a hitter 25-30 years ago. Prime Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, Leonard Smith, psychopaths like Chuck Cecil. "Dad why didn't QBs run like Lamar and Josh back then?" Because they'd have died doing it and they'd have put the hits into highlight VHS tapes that they sold back to you or, like this, put it into the intro video for the weekly broadcast. I still remember the hit Steve Pelleur took from Mike Singletary and the one Joe Ferguson took from Wilbur Marshall in 1985, Bryce Paup knocking out Paul Justin in 1995, etc.

i can't imagine he and his wife were doing corporate returns on their own, but who in the world is signing off on those returns?

Whoever they paid to do it. There are plenty of accountants, and accounting firms, with zero integrity whatsoever.

I hate to break it to you guys but he ran a 4.62 40 yd dash

He needs to ***** catch the ***** ball and ***** hold on to it.  11.1% drops and 4 fumbles is not acceptable for a featured guy.

Not at all suspicious numbers for a guy busted for gambling.

The NFL Draft was 17 rounds until 1977 when it was reduced to 12 rounds. Then when the salary cap was introduced in 1994 it became 7 rounds.

In 1992, the last year of the 12 round draft, 336 picks were made

This year 257 players were selected

  5. There's a lot of competition, but the Bills lost several core ST guys and Shavers is apparently an excellent gunner.  He's going to compete for a spot at the backend of the roster.  I also think Hamler has a shot as well.  If he can stay healthy, he can play, and he's a PR which they currently need. I don't think the FA that Beane referenced working out and signing today is going to be anyone of major consequence so that roster spot is still up for grabs.

So who knows something about Rugby?  What positions are there? Do they have players like OL or more like WR/TE??

has he shown good rugby ball catching skills? Or maybe great tackling?

or did we just draft him bc he is big and can move?

    What position are they thinking

I'd imagine he's a solid tackler fundamentally. You aren't allowed to block in rugby. Catching the ball over his head wouldn't be something he's used to doing very often.

They drafted him as a physical freak of nature. Beane mentioned that Kromer went to his work out and liked him.  They get to hang on to him basically for free for a while so give Kromer a piece of unmolded clay, with no bad habits to break, and see what he can do.  If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out.  If it does? That's just free real estate.   I hope the kid moves in with Kromer immediately.  Legitimately. Into his house.  Just don't touch his beach chairs.

I mean, if you want a freak athlete to develop there was Myles Cole. 6'6" 270 running 4.6 and change, who has actually taken snaps of American football. If Wade never got a real shot, neither will this guy I think.

Having a roster and PS exemption makes a big difference.

The time to yardage ratio in speed is interesting to me.

Tee Higgins for example ran a 4.52 in the 40. Keon Coleman ran a 4.61. Yet when it came to the 10 yard split - Coleman ran it in 1.54 while Higgins ran it in 1.66.

Subsequently, everyone's favorite WR Troy Franklin beat them both in the 40 by a good percentage at 4.41. But getting up to that top speed takes him longer than it does Coleman as he ran his 10 yard in 1.61.

Some guys reach their top speed faster than others. Coleman while lacking in long end speed, he reaches that top speed quicker than both of them - which makes up for a lot, getting off the line quicker.

While he ran a slow 40 - he was the fastest Gauntlet and ran it EXTREMELY smooth:

Everyone's focusing on the 40. But there's much more to the story than that. His play speed is very good.

I remember when Anquan Boldin ran a 4.7 then set the league on fire as a rookie.

  8. OK, so which veterans are still out there?  Obviously it doesn't need to be any of these people and it could be a random but this is who seems to be there that most of us would have heard of. Courtesy SpoTrac

    Hunter Renfrow

    Allen Robinson

    OBJ

    Michael Gallup

    Tyler Boyd

    Michael Thomas

    MVS

    Russell Gage

    DJ Chark

    Jamal Agnew

    Mecole Hardman

    Jakeem Grant

    Chase Claypool

    Deandre Carter

    Sterling Shephard

    Richie James

    Jalen Guyton

There are a couple other guys that honestly I haven't heard of.

The only one with history with Brady is Michael Thomas but Michael Thomas hasn't been himself since 2019 so I'm not sure how much that matters.  He's probably cooked at this point even though he's only 31.  He caught 149 passes in 2019 then wrecked his ankle and never really came back from it.  He's also been a bit of a headache so IDK if that's what they are looking for in a team with a leadership transition happening.

Allen Robinson is probably done as well.  It'd be easy to attribute last season to the Steelers QBs, but he struggled the year before with the Rams also who clearly had buyer's remorse after signing him as a FA. He had foot surgery, went on IR, and the Rams gave him away for essentially nothing to Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh just released him after bringing in QB help so they clearly weren't impressed either.  He hasn't had a good season since 2020 with the Bears.

OBJ gets brought up around here all the time.  He hasn't played a full season since 2019 and has averaged 25 catches a year for 4 years straight. He's also been a headache. He did have a solid playoffs for the Rams in 2021...right before he tore his ACL again.  Last season for Baltimore he had 4 catches for 35 yards in 2 playoff games.  It's entirely possible that he's done.

I'm not going through all of them, but I don't think it's any of these last 3.

Yes, Boyd would make the receiver room look a lot better.  He was a starting outside WR before they drafted Higgins.

It'd be a nice karma signing as well. He was the guy who really broke the drought, not Dalton.

Could be.   I was optimistic about Arthur Moats and he's basically the same guy just 15 years later.   Only notable difference physically or in their college production is that Solomon has huge hands.   Maybe that's the difference between making it and being a journeyman special-teamer like Moats.   Moats was an elite character guy though too,  I don't know about Solomon.

Arthur Moats did end Brett Favre though did he not?

Well Penn State is hundreds of miles from Pittsburgh so they're really not the same area

And Terry Smith has been the cornerbacks coach at Penn State for years now

Respected guy.. he runs a disciplined system... We're looking for scheme fits late in the draft at defensive back

Penn State and Pittsburgh run DB friendly systems that translate to our system

The kid is from Aliquippa. That's what he's referring to.

Undersized, but speedy.  He's pretty much limited to slot corner on defense, and Taron Johnson is going to get the lions share of reps there for the foreseeable future.  He'll make his money on special teams and wait for a chance to play on defense.  Good pick at that point in the draft.

Johnson started to slip a little last year and has an out after 2026.

Bills are listing him as a C/G

Could he compete with Edwards at LG and groom at Center?

If he's not starting one day one, whether he makes the team or not depends on his ability to play some amount of guard. They can't keep a #2 center only player. There's no roster space for it.

This would be a reason he dropped. If you're taking this player you need to believe he's better than your current center. If he's not, or it's close, you are going in another direction.

You want this kid to start and shove McGovern back to guard.
