Eno Benjamin is the guy I would like to see the Bills maybe even reach on a little bit. After watching him for the last few years this is the guy I want to see on the Bills. He kind of lacks that high end breakaway speed but similar to Devin the guy has the power and moves when used with the quickness he does have should make him a valuable addition somewhere if not in Buffalo.

I knew I was forgetting a prospect in my OP, you nailed it.

Super impressed with Benjamin despite living in Ireland and never getting to watch the PAC-12 (8 hour time difference is the worst!) but he just never goes down on first contact and can help our team on all 3 downs.

To be honest, id be ok with drafting one of Benjamin/Moss/Perine in rounds 3-4 and then getting Dillon in the 5th or 6th. A backfield of Singletary/Moss/Dillon would be the dream and allow us to cut Yeldon while using less than a million cap space on our entire RB room.

I like what this guy can do for an offense in creating mismatches other places. When he is in the field you really need to be careful with your personnel package because he will slaughter DBs and little linebackers. Line him up in the backfield with a versatile TE in the field and some speed in the slot and have some fun.

The game HAS changed but there will be teams who have an asymmetrical response to the change. San Francisco made the Super Bowl pounding the ball. You will need to be able to throw, but right now NOBODY has a run stuffing middle linebacker on the field very much and if they do you can make it very very uncomfortable for them.

This is a big part of what I was trying to get at in my OP...you just said it a lot better! Cheers dude!

  3. First off, I think we can all agree that we need a better #2 RB in 2020 to complement Devin Singletary. With all respect to the legend that is Frank Gore, he wore down as the season went on and the coaching staff never seemed to trust Yeldon. Christian Wade remains the wildest of wildcards, but it's very unlikely he could fill this role next year or at least it would be foolish to make that assumption.

However, there are several directions in which the team could go to fill this #2 RB spot. I've seen some posters asking McBeane to go big in free agency and sign Derrick Henry who is undoubtedly an excellent player. However, it's been my belief (and I think the past decade or so in the NFL has proven this) that it's unwise to invest huge contracts or high draft picks at the RB position. As I've researched the 2020 draft, I've been targeting names like Zack Moss, LaMichel Perine, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire (probably in that order) as perfect fits for the Bills falling somewhere in the 3rd-4th Rounds.

But could there be a potential compromise between these two scenarios (top free agent vs draft)? Is it at least possible for the Bills find a way to get a player like Derrick Henry without sacrificing a huge level or resources? To my knowledge, there is one similarly-sized RB with the stats to match who could be the perfect Thunder to Singletary's slightly slow Lightening for the cost of a 4th-6th Round draft pick. The draft is basically a lottery, but it seems like AJ Dillon could have a chance to make a Henry-like impact at the next level.

Dillon is 3 inches shorter than Henry, but outweighs him by 11 POUNDS. Think about that and then watch the highlights below...it's exactly what you'd expect. Nobody wants to tackle this guy. He's not going to be a 4.4 burner, but he has enough speed and enough shiftiness to make guys miss or run over them if they don't. Boston College was not an offensive juggernaut by any means during his time there and defenses were putting 8 guys in the box/keying in on stopping Dillon every week. Despite this, he put up 4,618 rushing/receiving yards and 40 TDs in 3 seasons. From day one, his physicality, pass blocking, and efficiency in short-yardage situations could help this team. All from a player who is 5 years younger than Derrick Henry and will take up about 1/25th of the cap space.

It's not guaranteed he'll be a star or become a Derrick Henry, but I think this guy gives us a chance to zag (have a huge RB) when the rest of the league is zigging (defenses getting smaller and more spread out). I want to see the Bills pass more in general, but Dillon would give us the #2 back we desperately need and it would be well worth a 5th rounder to find out. Go Bills!

If he can solve the RT turnstile, who cares if he is a douchebag.

Also, @bills_fan, are you sure you aren't thinking of the Titans' LEFT tackle Taylor Lewan? As far as I was aware, Lewan has the infamous reputation for being dirty. For example, our secondary had a lot to say about his behavior after our win against them this year.

However, I've never heard anything similar about Conklin. Just seems like a good player and a great fit for our team.

Adding Conklin and either Hooper/Henry at TE would make a huge difference to our offense. Sign 1-2 playmakers on defense, re-sign/extend our own, and solve the rest through the draft. With our talent and all these resources, no reason this team cannot be a genuine contender for multiple years.

  5. I really hope we don't target Clowney in FA. He's too injury-prone, doesn't make enough difference-making plays, and will not warrant the money he'll get on the open mkt. I would guess that he'll break down completely from a physical standpoint in 2 more seasons or less.

If we are going to spend top dollar on this position, I would target Ngakoue, Judon, and Dupree in that order.

Yannick is by far the best...players like him don't make it to free agency EVER. Hugely productive, has never missed a game, Walter Payton Man of the Year Nominee, and will only be 25 when next season starts...anything can happen, but all the signs point to a superstar who would be worth his big second contract.

  6. Beane's post-draft press conference where he said 'Singletary's tape was the most fun to watch of any prospect he scouted' might have been the understatement of the year.

Love this kid...now let's get him Zack Moss or Lamichel Perine to pair with and watch them make NFL defenses look silly for the next decade!

  7. He probably wants to take time away from the game, but I'd say do whatever it takes to bring Kuechly in as a defensive assistant for the coaching staff.

Pay him whatever he wants, think of the impact he could have filling the leadership void left by Lorax and Kyle Williams even though he won't be an active player anymore. I'm also guessing he could really maximize the play/potential of Edmunds and Milano (as well as the younger guys like Vosean Joseph) and could even serve as a recruiting tool in free agency.

I always hoped the McDermott/Beane connections would eventually lead Keuchly to play for us, but this could work too.

  8. I want Laviska Shenault at #22, then would target Michael Pittman or Chase Claypool in the later rounds. Might be willing to trade up into the late 3rd to land Claypool (to pair with Shenault, John Brown, and Beasley) along with an edge rusher/RB/CB with our other two Day 1-2 picks.

So how do you feel when someone is running for a break away TD and drops ball while celebrating before endzone? I mean his intent was obviously to score TD

This x 1000. He screwed up and the refs gave him the benefit of the doubt which isn't their job.

Also, I kept waiting for the officiating assistants to storm the field again and overturn the blindside block on Ford or throw a flag on the illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on Josh by Cunningham but no such luck...

We made a lot of mistakes that cost us, but we certainly didn't get any help from the refs on this one.

  10. Great post @MAJBobby, appreciate all the detail and hard work on your part.

Agree with all of your takes except for the fact that I believe Moss and Harris won't last until the 5th round. I know the position is devalued (and I am completely against paying a UFA like Henry top dollar or drafting an RB in the 1st round), but I'd spend our late 3rd or trade up in the 4th to get Moss, Harris, or Edwards-Helaire if that's what it took.

Getting an upgrade at RB2 would be huge for this offense and the middle of the draft seems like the best way to do this. Go Bills!

  11. If we stay at #22, give me the best player available...from LSU. WR Justin Jefferson or Edge K'Lavon Chaisson.

Wouldn't mind a trade up for either CeeDee Lamb, Henry Ruggs III, or Yetur Gross-Matos though if the price was right (may need to get to picks 14-17 for them).

Go WR/Edge in the 2nd (whichever we didn't grab in the 1st) and then get me Zack Moss/Clyde Edwards-Helaire or another RB that will compliment Motor.

    April 23rd can't come soon enough...Go Bills!

Forced?  That's a good play, but hopefully it doesn't work out.

Yeah for sure, they’ve been crushing it. I would say that they’ve been an even better fantasy defense than in real life.

I don’t like starting guys against the Bills if I can help it though (primarily because I don’t want anyone to play well against us and also because Bills games are stressful enough as it is!).

But since I can’t buy another defense, happy to provide a reverse jinx and help the Bills out!! ??

  13. Since I have $0 FAAB left, I'm forced to start the Steelers defense against us in the second leg of my fantasy football championship this weekend...so rejoice! The Bills are definitely putting up 40+ points! ?

Would sacrifice the $350 prize money in a heartbeat if it meant the Bills would win in a stress-free blowout and clinch the playoff spot!

It's amazing that they are only 6-7 when you look their talent.

It really is...Exhibit A that coaching and culture do matter (and that having a meddlesome sociopath for an owner can really hurt your team's chances for success).

Thankfully, I think we're in good shape on all three and another great off-season would vault our Bills into the upper echelon of genuine Super Bowl contenders.

Should be fun, I've never been to a game in Heinz Field (only a couple in Three Rivers BITD) and I haven't seen the crew in a loooong time!

Enjoy man, hopefully there will be a large Bills contingent there with you to turn up the noise on the inexperienced Hodges.

I was at Heinz Field to see UB play University of Pittsburgh back in 2007 or 2008. Was a cool stadium from what I can remember, we were up in the nosebleeds. Pitt had a certain RB back then as well who made a lot of tacklers look silly (Shady).

    Go Bills!

Pitt blitz just as much an as often as the ravens do.  If they dont scheme the OL to pick it up or the quick pass game to combat that it wont matter if juju or conner are back or not.

    11 hours ago, NewEra said:

Next on Josh’s to do list:  figure out how to deal with the blitz

Per the Buffalo news, "Baltimore is blitzing an NFL-high 53.4% of pass plays through 13 games...Pittsburgh is blitzing on 36.5% of pass plays this season, according to Pro Football Focus."

Also, "In the three-game win streak against Miami, Denver and Dallas, the Bills had showed progress against pressure. Those teams blitzed Allen at a combined 30% rate, and Allen went 17 of 23 for 209 yards with two TDs, no interceptions and a 130.5 rating, according to News charts."

Denver and Dallas have elite pass rushers, but we limited them effectively. Baltimore plays Cover-0 and blitzes more than any team in the league and we struggled (the Pats and the Browns also blitz very frequently and efficiently too so that's 3 of our 4 losses right there). As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I believe the Steelers are more similar to Denver/Dallas than the Ravens which should make this an easier match up in theory. Plus they play zone rather than the press man coverage the Ravens rely on.

Pittsburgh has a great defense and pass rush, but a lot of people are giving them too much respect on here. Our offense should actually match up pretty well with them and play well as long as we clean up the mistakes from this past week.

    Go Bills!

Absolutely man, happy to help. Only other rec I have is Goat Hill Tavern in Costa Mesa (right next to Newport). Awesome dive bar, great music and huge beer selection.

Do the LA sights for a day if you haven't done so already, but otherwise stick to the beaches...much better vibes IMO. Have fun!

    I get it.

The Steelers are home and the Buffalo offense just played a game where it looked like they had never seen a blitz before. And guess what the Steelers strength is?

Honestly asking...I've seen this mentioned several times about the Steelers being one of the best blitzing teams and I would have assumed that too, but do the stats actually back this up? According to NFL Matchup on ESPN (they tweet out stats a lot), they aren't even in the top 10 (meanwhile the Ravens are 1st by a mile).

No doubt that Watt, Dupree, and others provide an excellent pass rush, but good blitzing teams seem to be our biggest kryptonite at the moment and I think we match up better against the Steelers. I think the Bills have demonstrated that they're able to neutralize good pass rushers for the most part when they know where they're coming from throughout the season.

Also, as @whatdrought mentioned, the Steelers have played some pretty trash offenses for the last 6-7 weeks to pad their turnover and sack stats. Bengals, Dolphins, Cardinals, Browns twice, Rams at their worst...no real tests since they played the Ravens in week 5.

Just my opinion, but I think we are likely undervaluing the Raven's defense and overestimating the Steelers a decent amount.

This should be a fun one to read the reactions as emotions are typically high after a loss.  There were quite a few holding out for a potential one seed throughout the playoffs.  There was the media talking how we still don't have our big win over a quality team (now that the Cowboys got crushed again).  Then there are just the fans who's season lives and dies by every loss.  For me, I honestly wasn't expecting a lot out of today's game.  I wanted a win, being that I live in Baltimore, but I also know this was our toughest game and wasn't going to crush our season with a loss.  Also, we were going up against a team that very few have kept it close against since starting 2-2.  Either way, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of different perceptions about why we lost this game and who is to blame.  Judging by the other threads post-game, I expect some lovely responses.

1 - Allen - I have to start here because this was arguably his worst game of the season.  However, many other players had some bad moments that also could have cost us this game.  But this is our starting quarterback, so he will take most of the heat; fair or not.  Allen was downright awful in the first half.  While Baltimore's defense got pressure at times and even caused a fumble, Allen still had plenty of throws with time and to guys who were open.  On the first three drives, he had a player open 20+ yards down field and missed him by almost 5+ yards each time.  On two of them, I got the impression that Allen was assuming the receiver was going to break a different way.  Regardless, two of them could have gone for touchdowns.  If he hit even one of them, it's a very different game.  In the second half, Allen had at least two plays where he held onto the ball for 5+ seconds and took a sack.  one of them knocked us out of Field Goal range today.  But like I said earlier, others contributed to his bad game with key drops.  Knox dropped a pass because he was already looking downfield, but we still got 3.  Singletary dropped one because he got excited about the open field ahead of him if he could beat one guy.  Beasley technically dropped a deep pass, that yes a millionaire receiver should catch, but was still not easy.  Overall, Allen hits just 10% more of his passes and we are either tied at the end or winning.  He played bad against a good defense and I think even he will tell you that.  but again, we had the ball with a chance to tie by the end.

2 - Defensive front 4 - I can't tell you how impressed I am with how well our front 4 contained Lamar.  Jackson had some solid runs, but none were from him breaking contain on passing plays.  Shaq had another great game tracking him down and even Oliver held contain well on a few plays.  I don't blame the Ingram plays on these guys much as I don't believe their job was to do more than hold their ground, take the tackles that came their way, and absolutely make sure Jackson didn't escape for a big run; something that no other team has been able to do.  Great job by that unit.

3 - Defensive Mistakes - Watching the Ravens a few times this season, they do a great job of capitalizing on defenses that over-commit to a play or don't hold their gaps.  Today, the Bills did an overall solid job of limiting those mistakes.  There were a few plays were Edmunds and Milano assumed the play to the inside, but they weren't burned badly on those plays.  The only huge mistake was on the long TD pass to their TE.  Poyer was left to cover two different players and he picked the wrong one.  He also seemed to be covering the shallow crossing route, and seemed caught off guard when the TE went deep.  You take that play out of this game and Jackson doesn't break 100 yards passing as we are kicking a field goal to win at the end.  I'm not dumping on Poyer at all as I don't know if he was supposed to have more support, but that was are only major mistake of the game and you could argue the true difference maker.  I'm more annoyed that it made Lamar's day look a lot better than it was.

4 - “We end in tears. That’s because we invested so much in each other,” Dawkins told his players. “I love you guys. It’s been amazing coaching this group, and for us, we got a lot of good memories, we accomplished a lot of amazing things this year.”

5 - Singletary - I'm sure that many are going to complain that Motor wasn't used more in this game on the first 3 drives, but I'm not one of them.  While the Ravens run defense has been suspect, the NFL is game of chess and points.  We came out throwing and had the right plays called on those first 3 drives, Allen just missed his throws.  Allen and Daboll will both tell you that they'll take those opportunities 10 out of 10 times.  After that last drive, we went with what works and Singletary had a strong game.  Motor had his longest run of the season and really showed some explosion.  His two drops hurt in the catching game, but he was easily our best weapon on the field today.  The key 3rd down play where we has tackled for a loss was a complete whiff block by Ford, simply inexcusable.

6 - Special Teams - The punting game was rough today but I can't completely blame Bojo.  There were at least two bad snaps that Bojo did a good job fielding, but he still could have gotten off better punts.  Whether the wind was at his back or not, he wasn't hitting the ball clean and gave up decent field position a few times.  Roberts also made some poor choices to return a few kickoffs out of the endzone and tackled well shy of the 25.  The lone bright spot was Hausch Money as he was back today.  All of his kicks were solid and no-doubters.  That was a much needed pick me up after his last few games and hopefully he's knocked the kinks out.

7 - Judon - If there's only player who I really respected out there for the Ravens, it was the play of Judon.  He absolutely blew some plays up against us.  On the sack-fumble, we tried to let Knox block him 1 on 1 and you know how that went.  He was solid in both coverage and blitzes.  If Shaq Thompson got that contract, I'm afraid to see what he will get.  Judon was the best player on the field for them and a game changer at times.  I'm a little surprised we didn't account for him more.  Others may have gotten pressure, but that was more scheme that winning a matchup.

8 - Refs/Replay - Man, I hate going to this well after a loss but today was bad and I genuinely think the NFL is trying to protect them.  Outside of our last drive, there were multiple plays that prevented points for the Bills and helped the Ravens score.  On the missed 12 man in the huddle call, I've never seen McD so angry since he's been here.  If that is called, Jackson may not be throwing that touchdown from 5 yards further back.  The missed offensive PI call against Foster was terrible and the replay process is such a joke in that category that McD didn't even try to challenge.  Even if we don't get another yard, we are in field goal range.  As for my NFL comment, it's maddening to me that they didn't show any of the personal foul calls on replay.  If this has been an all season thing, I apologize, but I can't remember them not showing us the infractions.  I have no idea what Hughes did nor what the Ravens did at the end of the game.  I'm sure Hughes reacted to the defensive holding penalty called against our Star (seriously btw, a DT?!), but I don't know.  Hughes deserved to be pissed because he had his typical game of being held the entire time but not called for it.  Nor were many of the holds downfield on their 10+ yard runs.

9 - Smoke - This is now two games in a row where we really didn't hear Brown's name.  Granted, the first missed deep ball was to him, but he still didn't show up afterwards.  I look forward to the All-22 replay to see what happened to him, but it's alarming how much he's disappeared.  If you want to blame Daboll for not getting him open, you may have an argument, but I really don't know what's going on here.  In a game where too many players are making drops and Allen is shaky, Brown needs to be found to get the ball moving and confidence growing.  I hope this is something that gets addressed going forward.

10 - Frazier - The Ravens were held below almost all of their season averages in this game.  Lamar threw his first interception in forever and was sacked quite a few times.  We only gave up one large play, which if you remove that from the stat line, would've made the Bills offense the better on the field.  He had some great timed blitzes today and was so effective in his pressure scheme that the Ravens were forced to result to multiple screen passes.  I noticed on a few plays that Frazier had the entire linebacker unit shift to strong or weak side pre-snap which seemed to really do a number on Lamar.  Just a great scheme.  If there's a play book for how to bottle up the Ravens defense, I think Frazier wrote the first chapter today.

    Random Play Thoughts:

    • Any play were Allen immediately slid to one side of the field after the snap didn't work at all.  Each play was brutal
    • Brown's last play felt strange that he didn't cut harder on the slot, creating more separation between him and Peters
    • Singletary swing pass after 5 straight runs on the fourth drive.  Trying to mix it up, but then goes right back to him

Offense aside for the first half, I think we played the best team in the league incredibly well.  We were in position to tie the game at the end and I think the score reflected the game well.  Great game and still a Bills win next week, and Titans win this week, from clinching a playoff birth.  9-4 with a dominating defense.  And hey, with how we play at home, maybe it's best we are going on the road.

    Go Bills!

Great recap as always Virgil, something I look forward to on Mondays win, lose, or draw.

Lawson is earning a big payday either from us or another team (possible comp pick?). He's so underrated vs. the run.

Judon is an excellent player with the athleticism and football IQ to disrupt offenses in a lot of ways...any interest in signing him as a free agent? As you said, it will cost a lot, but probably less than the Clowney/Ngakoue types. Hypothetically, would people rather get Judon at 16 million per year or Ngakoue at 23 million per year?

RE: the lack of replays- it's not just you, they were few and far between yesterday and it was very frustrating. Joe Marino on his podcast basically said that unlike other game analysts, Dan Fouts is incapable of providing an adequate level of analysis on replays so they just don't bother with them on his broadcasts. Incredible...

I share your concern, but I think Smoke will be ok...Marlon Humphrey might be one of the top 2-3 most underrated CBs in the league. He's had tough match ups recently and we haven't executed well on the plays designed to go his way. As you mentioned though, he could have been better at gaining separation or even coming back to the ball a bit on the final play.

Tough game overall in which we didn't get much luck and made a lot of mistakes, but this year's team always seems to fight back and give themselves a chance and that gives me hope. Go Bills!
