Well, that's exactly what happens to ambitious talent at small markets: move beyond to bigger markets. Most of the top names in national media started in small markets, then moved their way up. The ones that stay put do so for a variety of reasons. But not everyone is in a race to get to NYC or LA.

You are correct however my point is that if they don't have the talent they stay in those small markets no matter how ambitious they are.

I wonder if Jeremy White would take the reigns if Howard left? I grew up in the same neighborhood with him, and graduated in the same HS class. Truly a good dude. Funny...I don't recall him being a Bills/Sabres fan growing up.

Maybe he can come over and help you stain that deck Johnny LOL.

  2. "Come prepared" and "50 bucks in cash" simply do not go... Sorry Pooj... He he...

I gotta read what happened, hope they didn't dine and dash you... Or that you also had a credit card w/a Clipper's fan limit?

Even cheapsake like me would have yanked my 300 dollar ATM limit (yes, I only have a $300 daily cash out limit, per card)... BUT I aslo would have had the Amex just in case too... If I was using cash, even for a tip... You can't trust anyone in this world... ;-) ;-)

    ;-P

All light hearted kidding from me... I hate those expensive steakhouses too!

That is why you throw the cash around...And plastic, @ least the Amex... ;-P ;-P

I once drew the short straw and had to go to the Chop house with 3 corporate attorneys. They spent the first half of the meal playing a game of trying to get the waiter fired. They were shouting loudly at the waiter trying to create a scene while suggesting that the service was sub par.I let them know what I thought of them, excused myself and took my meal to go.The next day I contacted the senior partner and fired the clowns.I find that these exclusive restaurants are filled with people just like this. The most successful and wealthiest man I ever knew ate breakfast and dinner at Dennys every day while wearing jeans and work boots.

I think you may be a bit confused on this subject. In fact, small markets are where many (most?) TV and Radio on-air "talent" gets their start. It is very common for some of the most talented young broadcasters to start in a smaller market. As such, Buffalo has been a hotbed for talent through the years.

Now, you are right that, as a rule, established stars don't flock to a market such as Buffalo---the money just isn't there to pay them, and they get limited exposure. But that doesn't mean the older local on-air personalities don't have talent. I don't make the mistake of equating fame/stardom/etc with talent. I mean, how can one argue that a guy like Colin Cowheard has more talent than someone like Howard Simon (for example)? Perhaps he has a stronger radio voice than Howard, though I'd say both are adequate for the job. What separates them, IMO, is Cowheard's willingness to engage in controversy for it's own sake. He is willing to make preposterous comments on the air, to make unfounded/over-the-top accusations and bark opinions I'm not even sure he truly believes. All this for the sake of controversy.

It's become clear to me, in modern media (and this is more true in talk radio than anywhere) controversy has taken the place of honest/reasonable discussion. And "talent" now means the ability, and especially willingness, to do whatever it takes to stir the pot. Because drawing an audience with controversy is much easier than to attract one with a calm discussion. After all, most every blowhard has an opinion, and is more than willing to share it. Relatively few have an intelligent and informed take on things, and have the eloquence to state it convincingly.

I haven't heard Howard in man years now, but he was always top-notch with Empire sports. He was the kind of sports talk-radio host that fostered reasonable discussion. So I guess he doesn't have the "talent" to make it in radio in a big market.

    OK, end of rant.

I never said talent doesn't get their start at small market stations, that's obvious. If you read my post I stated that they don't move beyond those markets.I enjoy our local guys as well such as Tom Bauerle, the guy is awesome .I personally can't listen to local sports talk shows cause they go on and on about really stupid topics that are unrelated to sports at all then when they do a post game show they insult the majority of callers.I love listening to hockey talk coming out of Toronto, top notch.

  4. So you're willing to give Kane--a guy with a history of off-ice incidents--the benefit of the doubt, but Marcell Dareus should get the hammer dropped on him for drag racing, and is part of a degrading moral culture with the Bills?

Yeah, the facts were that Mr. Dareus crashed into property and caused damage as well as being charged with racing down a public street.Kane has been accused of rape without proof at this point.Do I really have to explain this to you? Dareus was charged,Kane is accused.

  5. Why do we hear Rexy every. Single. Day. Of. Our. Lives.

Dont you have some work to go do? Dont you have a couch in your office to go sleep on, so you can wake up at 4 am and watch more film?

Why do I feel like I'm watching Rex Ryan's reality TV show?

I guess he's supposed to be a good coach, but . . . this isnt really a Buffalo way to approach a grinding-ass job.

Because those who cant do the job talk a lot to compensate for their short comings. This man is NOT a good coach .This was a bad decision,

  6. i eat my steak with ketchup and between 2 pieces of dry toast

    LOL good man!

Why are they "snooty types" simply because they enjoy a good steak?

I am forced to eat at these establishments often.I personally cant stand to be in the company of phonies and fake plastic people that try to act like they are something they aren't.

  7.

Yep! Old as the hills... And rightly so. In 1953, the police came knocking on the door for my father. He was a known hell-raiser in town. The only problem? My grandfather tells the cops that he's in the Army... IN GERMANY. LoL... I think soldiers took boats across the pond back in those days. Hard to top that alibi.

Nothing wrong w/these tactics, just as they were in S.Cheektowaga in the early 1950's.

I say throw the book @ Kane! IMO... If it is true of course. No wonder the dude wants to hang in Chicago and play for them... He stays home, we will have this crap all the time. He's not a "kid" anymore. What is he like 27? Many of us were married @ 27 and had kids... Heck, my mother already had 3 and one on the way (yours truly... One sent from heaven above! :D:pirate::D ) in 1967.

Time to grow up Kaner and put your Big Boy pants on... Douchebag!

Relax! This is nothing more than an allegation at this point. Before we hang the guy why don't we find out what the evidence is?

  8.

Yes, but she asked a question about a presidential candidate fantasizing about one of his employees on her knees giving head. Then implies Megyn Kelly's problem is menstrual. So clearly Megyn is the problem here.

This isn't Trumps fault. Fox News is just trying to bury him...after giving him the mic on all the opinion shows for the past five years.

Besides, I'm sure when Trump is running against Hillary, no one will make an advertising loop of all the ways he's treated women like dirt. You can tell by how many libs are coming to his defense!

I would have loved it if Donald would have just said"i'm sorry, I thought I was dealing with a professional media production " then took of the microphone and walked off stage.

  9. I must be out of my mind for seeking legit advice after the crap I fling in similar threads, but here goes....

Meeting Parents of a friend of mine for dinner tonight. They are in town from Richmond, they want to take me to dinner at Mortons. I have only met them one or two times so that in and of itself is going to be kind of awkward, but that's ok. They are treating...I am not a Morton's kind of guy, I will actually be surprised if they let a troglodyte like me in the place. Do I offer to pay the tip? I figure I will hit the ATM and come prepared with about $50 in cash(I NEVER carry cash on me). What say y'all?

Also what should I get? Like I said, I have never set foot in Mortons and my steak knowledge is non-existent. Suggestions on cuts? Dishes? Thanks.

Tell them you want it well done and then ask for some A1,that will really piss them off.I love dining with snooty types.

  10. My fiance and I are heading to Boston this weekend for the Zac Brown Band concert at Fenway. We will be staying at a friend's house in Springfield Friday night and then in Boston Saturday and Sunday. Concert is Sunday night.

Here's some suggestions I've compiled so far, please let me know if you've had positive/negative experiences with any:

    1. Sam Adams Brewery Tour

    2. Fanueil Hall Marketplace (Quincy Market)

    3. Cheers Original (better than replica I've heard?)

    4. Mike's Pastry Shop

    5. La Familia Giorgio's

    6. Bleacher Bar (Bills Backers Bar?)

    7. Cask-n-Flagon

    8. Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, I guess they have a cool interactive re-creation.

I've also heard that the Boston Duck Tours are pretty cool.

Any of you TBD'ers have any other recommendations for restaurants, attractions, tours, etc.?

Have fun but I can tell you the same thing I tell everyone going there.Cool town but the rudest people I've met anywhere in the world.

  11. The Bills went out on a limb and signed arguably one of the most hated players in the league when they picked up Richie Incognito. Rex wanted him so Terry and Kim met with him and gave him their seal of approval. Miraculously, he's a changed man they concluded from their sit down with him. There have been rumors that equally hated RB Ray Rice might be next as he shares strong ties with the Pegula's from their sports agency.

Mere days later, Terry and Kim's other team pulled off a blockbuster trade giving away the only valuable players left on the Sabres for another troubled player, Evander Kane. From trouble with fans, coaches, and teammates, the guy was basically run out of Winnipeg. Terry and Kim welcomed him with open arms and said that he just needed a fresh start.

So my question is, are Terry and Kim just naive? Or are they on to something? Is Buffalo going to be a destination for troubled players from around the league? Or are they just asking for trouble?

This is an excellent post. The Pegulas are not making great decisions if Incognito represents their standards.

  12. Here

Very roughly (doesnt take into account 1st month or final month interest)

    month 1

    Pay $400 to card 1, $25 to card 2

    Card 1 $900 Balance, $14.25 in interest

    Card 2 $575 Balance, $4.31 in interest

    Month 2

    Card 1 $514.25 Balance, $8.14 in interest

    Card 2 $554.31 Balance, $4.16 in interest

    Month 3

    Card 1 $122.39 Balance, $1.94 in Interest

    Card 2 $522.47 Balance $4.00 in interest

    Month 4

    Card 1 Paid off

    Card 2 $225.80 Balance, $1.69 in Interest

    Month 5

Card 2 paid off with $227.49 payment

    $38.49 paid in interest

    Option 2:

    Pay $25 to Card 1, $400 to Card 2

    Month 1

    Card 1 $1275 Balance $20.18 in interest

    Card 2 $200 Balance $1.50 in interest

    Month 2

    Card 1 $1070.18 Balance, $16.94 in interest

    Card 2 Paid Off

    Month 3

    Card 1 $662.12 Balance, $10.48 in interest

    Card 2 Paid Off

    Month 4

    Card 1 $247.60 Balance, $3.92 in interest

    Card 2 Paid Off

    Month 5

Card 1 Paid Off with $251.52

    $53.02 Paid in interest

The effects are minimized because you are paying over 20% of your total balance every month

edit: Never mind, $200 a month makes it more crucial to attack the 19% first and minimum payment the 9%.

What about the charging that he's gonna do in the mean time.Don't forget to factor that in...........Oh yes he will

  13. If you were Pegula why would you even care to pursue it further? Is there any rational basis for it, or have you just adopted the idea of the league acting as the morality police to the extent that you couldn't bare the idea of somebody possibly stepping outside the bounds of upstanding conduct in his private life without league involvement and penalties?

You know sometimes I feel like I live on the planet of the apes when I read this stuff here.Pegula is NOT a stupid man .Anybody successful in business knows that your organization lives and dies based on the intelligence and character of the staff that you assemble. This has nothing to do with morality police,it has everything to do with the FACT that stupid people make bad decisions and as a successful leader that's not something you would be willing to deal with.Yesterday there was a thread here about crying at work and the idiots came out of the woodwork suggesting that it was normal to do so .I don't know if the folks that post here are under 20 and just are unaware how business works or just slugs sitting at home without a job.
