  1. On a related note...I didn't realize Brandon Bridge went to the CFL, instead of training camp with the Cowboys or Lions.

He hasn't done so well, in limited action...5-10, 62 yards, 1 INT.

(I was really hoping to sign him as a UDFA. He's supposed to have a lot of potential, but I'd like to see him dominate the CFL first.)

He just has to get acclimated to the bigger field with 20 yard end zones.

I am surprised no one has brought up the times that Gray was seemingly targeted and even when he caught the ball. Those were clearly meant for Sammy, and he didn't catch them. Orton had hair confusion. Gray actually had more catches than targets in 2015 making him the greatest receiver of all time.

Marrackett went so far to get a Sammy look-alike, which really messed with the defenses, but also our own QBs. We just need better QBs.

  3. Marrone/Hackett were unbelievably incompetent in all phases of coaching offense, use of Sammy Watkins included. Even on the most basic levels, they just were trying to put square pegs into round holes. Just watch Watkins college tape. His screen game is UNREAL. Once he has the ball in his hands and is moving downfield, he's a threat to break tackles, evade defenders using speed, quickness, and power. Sammy can lower his shoulder and truck.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember us trying one bubble screen to him all year long. How can you watch his college tape and not say, "Yeah, we should probably draw up a play like that for him and see how it goes." It was just like willful defiance to basic things any average coach would do. So glad those clowns are gone. I have confidence Roman will coach to the strengths of our offense and Rex will ensure that he does so.

People are joking about them overthinking it, but I think that's actually what happened. There's been an emphasis on analytics the past couple years, but they shouldn't forget that this is still just football. It's a chess game where each piece has a certain role and you use it for what it does best.

  4. These "analyses" are filled with failure to look at a bigger picture. For the 579 pass attempts, there were 128 targets of Watkins. 22.1% of passes went his way. OBD was targeted 130 times on 607 pass attempts. That's 21.4%. Does that mean that OBJ wasn't targeted enough either? Of the 273 completions, 23.8% went to Watkins. OBJ hauled in 23.8% of the Giants total completions as well. At the end of the day, the Giants passing game was 18% more productive overall than Buffalo's last year. Given that his overall participation was comparable to the definitive ROY candidate, I don't know how you can see he was "grossly misused" unless you say the same thing about OBJ. Which, IMO would be a ridiculous statement.

Didn't OBJ play in 4 less games?

EDIT: I just ran the numbers and OBJ was actually targeted on 28.6% of pass attempts during the 12 games he actually played.

    132 targets on 462 attempts.

  5. apparently the reasons they didn't use him on more screens was because of his ribs being more exposed to hits and because they didn't think the OL could block effectively for them. I suppose either or both could be valid excuses, but it doesn't make it any less irritating!

Woods put Julius Peppers on his ass in that GB game.

Just let Sammy run behind Bob and Clay. No need for he O-line

  6. Sammy never gets any dpi calls

That's one I haven't heard, yet. In general, refs don't give rookies the benefit of doubt. For better or worse, right or wrong, you gotta build a good rapport with the refs.

What a fun game to watch. Rex doesn't need to build a bully. He already has one.

  7. I know this is fantasy but it is also very important for this team - McCoy is very good but he's not great. I do not and will never like this deal or LeSean McCoy.

Alonso will have a better career.

McCoy could still be on pace for a HoF career. If Kiko has a HoF career, that's great, but comparing a LB to a RB is apples to oranges.

  8. I am concerned with stopping the run. Didn't do it under Pettine and I am more that a little curious about how they will do now under a similar system.

I think it'll be up to the LBs. They're going from a one-gap responsibilty to a two-gap responsibility, so they need to step it up. I think Brown will be fine and it would've helped to keep Spikes. Bradham is more of a question mark.

As a sports fan, I love statistics, but at some point they just don't have much value. I think this is getting to that point.

Yeah. Like everything, you gotta consider that football is the ultimate team sport. There are a lot of factors in play and statistics never seem as valuable as they are in the other major sports.

For instance, I think a QB in a spread scheme (going 5 wide with an empty backfield more often) with good bail-out options is going to do better than if he was put in a more vertical scheme with less options. How good is his RB at blocking and catching?

So, it's tough to compare one to another. The most we can say is that we hope Roman can do for our QBs what he did for Smith and Kaep. He'll need to help them improve in this area just as much as in other areas.
