  1. In my time as a Bills fan I have heard many sad AND true AND funny comments all in one. I am going to write two scenario's and the comments I heard from my friend Rex regarding the scenario. They are both sad, true and funny.

    1. After the 1999 playoff game against Tennessee he was up for grabs and in tears. He looked at me and said "it is not fair, it is the PLIGHT of Buffalo. Wide right, no goal, 4 straight Super Bowls losses and now this. It just isn't fair. It is the PLIGHT of Buffalo!!"

    2. After Byrd signed with New Orleans he called me and said, "I just don't understand why we can't have nice things!"

Love ya Rex, our time will come!

Everyone please feel free to share your sad, true and funny comments and explain the context of them.

  2. That's not accurate as he played three games for Tampa, did not play well, but was a poor scheme. he had a OC who mimicked the Giants push the ball down the field offense. He flourished on a West Coast offense where he could make quick reads. The disturbing part is the Raiders OC was at Tampa when Freeman was successful. He at times looked great and had two good years in Tampa. The part I'm referring is why didn;t the Raiders bring him in as a back up.

Living in Tampa, it became apparent Freeman's head was not in it. The news here was he had some mental issues, which is fine. He wouldn't be the only one in the NFL. It's a risk as he has the tools, speed, and can be accurate. Then again, he could flop. I'd still want EJ as the starter, and if given time, Frfeeman could be an ok back up. The problem with the MN game last year is they were desperate and did not give him anytime to prepare for their offense. They threw him out there after only 1.5 weeks, and he didn't know the plays. He looked territble and they never gave him another chance. If they waited a month, let him completely understand the playbook, terminology, etc. would he have been better? Who knows?

So at the league minimum, I'm fine with him being the third QB, and no guaranteed money. I would take him over Tuel as he has more talent. In 2010, he had 25 TD's to 5 Int's. In 2012 he had 27 TD's to 17 Int's. Three of his years he had a completion % over 60%. My point is only the Bills FO can figure out does he want to play football, work on learning Hackett's scheme all year, and maybe he moves up to the #2 spot. Now if EJ gets hurt in games after October, he could come in and win some games.

I am not going to beat on the drum to bench EJ though.

    Agreed. Well said.

  3. Another thing about Crossman that I don't like is we were bottom 3 in the League in punt and kick returns. Maybe even last? Can someone help me understand this. My thought is that it has to be a philosophy thing?! If so, that is disturbing. We have game changers in McKelvin, Goodwin and company kneeling the ball more than any other team. It reminds me of Jauron trying to keep games close, but, not win them. Is it just coincedence or philosophy?

A good example of this was the last game against the Pats they were running all over a wet field for tons of yards and we were kneeling the ball almost every single time.

    Thoughts?

  4. I'm not trying to get rid of him but I don't see how we are going to be able to use both of these WRs effectively. I read earlier that this trade may be an indicator that the Bills may want to get rid of Stevie. Cutting him isn't a solution because it would only be a savings of about $25,000.00 against the cap. The article offered that after this season it would be a lot more advantageous for the Bills. I don't know if a trade would be feasible but if so I'd be talking to Pettine over in Cleveland if so, they could use a #2 WR like Stevie.

Cutting him only saves $25000 to $500000 against the cap this year. However, I have seen, cutting him this year saves us $7 million plus next year against the cap, fyi.

  5. This is a reach! But based on trading for Williams and talking about trading for Chris Johnson. I really think we are going to take a run a CJ2K as a FA. By getting Williams and if we get CJ2K that gives us the ultimate flexibility!! I say we are trying to trade Spiller for trading up or gaining more picks. I think it is a deep draft as others do. So, by gaining Williams and possibly trading Spiller....I think we are trying to trade back from #9 for more picks AND trading Spiller for more picks! The real nice thing to me is Whaley and the Bills have a plan, evaluations, a board of ALL players, not just the players in the draft and are looking to get better for the entire roster!

    Go Bills !!

  6. You have to give crossman credit. The excuse of needing "core" ST players was pretty clever.

Once they stink again, he will say that we need more starters on ST.

Once that doesn't work, marrone will say that he needs to spend more personal attention to ST.

After that, the cycle will be complete, and he will be fired.

It is so sad, but, true! Seen it before over and over again. It is a viscous cycle, I eat cause I am lonely, I am lonely because I eat. I really, really like what the Bills are doing BUT to think Crossman should still be coaching STs boggles my mind. He has never done well before! Embarrassing. I could go on and on, but, just embarrassing!

  7. I had high hopes that the Bills would pick up either Kenny Britt or Desean Jackson in FA or another Safety just to give them some more draft flexibility.

Rd. 1 Mike Evans, WR Texas A&M: I've been back and forth between him and Matthews. I don't believe Matthews will be there at 9, plus i believe there are a good amount of potential starting Right tackles later in the draft. Evans, however, would immediately come in and become a weapon for EJ for years to come. Reminds me of Vincent Jackson. Overall, he's a 6'4 230 lb freak who runs a 4.53 and can be a potent deep ball or red zone threat. If the Bills pass on him at 9, I believe they will regret it years down the road.

Rd. 2 Austin Sefarian Jenkins TE Washington: Another weapon for EJ that would immediately be an upgrade over Chandler, Moeaki, and Gragg. At 6'6 almost 270 Lbs. I have him as a slight edge over Troy Niklas. Both are intriguing weapons. Sefarian Jenkins is a first round talent who should drop to the second round due to a foot injury during the combine. He has a nice skill set along with some freakish athleticism. At that size, the Bills Should be able to implement a nice double tight package with him and Chandler. You can never give a young quarterback enough weapons.

Rd. 3 Juwan James RT Tennessee: A suprisingly athletic 6'6 311 lb offensive tackle who spent all 37 of his career games on the right side. He was the leader of the Tennessee O Line. A very tough run blocker and a pretty reliable pass blocker. Should come in on day 1 and beat out the pedestrian Pears. James in the third round would be a pick I love. He has the potential to solidify our O Line if Chris Williams pans out at Guard.

Rd. 4 Ahmad Dixon S Baylor: Dixon is a hard hitting physical safety. He stands at 6 feet tall 212 lbs. He's fast and physical and always seems to be around the ball. The Bills may be content with what they have at safety but I tend to believe they should take a guy like this and let him compete from day one. I like the physical safety's who aren't afraid to come up and stick somebody.

Rd. 5 Andrew Jackson ILB Western Kentucky: Jackson is 6'1 245. He has been one of my favorite potential draft prospects for the last couple of years. He has consistently led the Western Kentucky defense while performing well against the better competition like LSU and Alabama. He is a thumper middle linebacker who is not afraid to lay the wood on anyone. I believe he will be a steal in the draft. Jackson is some insurance in case Brandon Spikes doesn't pan out or sign a long term deal with the Bills after this year.

Rd. 6 Aaron Lynch DE University of South Florida: At this point in the draft, you are looking for the best talent available. Two years ago, I watched Aaron Lynch dominate opposing O Lines as a freshmen for Notre Dame. Unfortunately, after his dominant freshmen season, he returned to his hometown state of Florida to be with his pregnant girlfriend. At USF, Lynch underperformed. He only had 5 sacks. That being said, this kid is only scratching the surface of his potential and at this point in the draft, the Bills have nothing to lose, yet could be highly rewarded for this selection.

Rd. 7 Aaron Colvin CB Oklahoma: Much like Round 6, in Round 7 you want to take the best talent available. Colvin may have to start the season on the PUP list due to a Torn ACL in the senior bowl. ACL injuries are so much less of a concern now a days with the brilliant doctors that are performing surgeries. Colvin is a talented Corner who would have likely gone in the second round if he had not injured his knee. He has nice man coverage ability, solid athleticism and fluid hips

The one UDFA I would like to bring in is TE Colt Lyerla from Oregon. We wouldn't be taking a risk with his off the field concerns as an UDFA and he could develop into another deadly weapon for EJ

    GO BILLS!!!

I LOVE it !! It has a couple different players than I like, but, the positions and thought processes are dead on to my train of thought as well. The first and second round picks are also the identical players I want to select! We can surely get a starting RT in the 3 round. We can't get an Evans in the 3rd round. ASJ could and probably will be better than Ebron and should/could be there in the 2nd.

    Go Bills!

We should draft a punter... Morman is getting old. 6th round.

We have drafted a kicker and punter the last two years.....let's just take a year off from it.

  8. Evans is my choice. He has been for at least 6 weeks. My fear is as the closer we get to the draft the higher his value is going. I hope he does not go before #9! And, as someone mentioned prior, I now feel some team could actually trade up for him. That is not something that I thought was possible until his trade value has been increasingly rising.

    EVANS!

  9. would you possibly change the statement to say or at least mean:

Thad Lewis may be the better football player in the NFL today but Manuel is the better QB and has a much higher ceiling while Lewis has likely reached or nearly reached his peak.

Edit: That's at least how I see it and I am curious to know if anyone has the same feeling?

I totally agree! I think we are handling the QB situation well too. For now as long as your statement continues to remain true.

  10. With all the bashing I see on these threads on TJ Graham I don't think anyone has mentioned (could be wrong) that he always tries to jump to catch the ball. Even when it is right in his hands. He should not be in the NFL! He is no a NFL WR. Nobody would trade a 7th rounder for him unless it was to return kicks. And, I would take a 7th for him.

  11. The odd part is that Williams' contract is certainly not at a discount. They paid a premium price for a discount guard. I don't really understand why he was the one that they handed that money to when there were a bunch of guards considered to be superior that ultimately went for roughly the same amount? The Williams thing is puzzling to me.

I don't disagree at all. But, not sure on who the other Guards were you are referring to? Also, I think the Bills like Williams because of his play against the run. I still don't like the signing though.

  12. I thought I would approach the trade back talk a little differently and focus on the type of talent those extra picks might make available to the Bills to build the team for the now, and the future. I only listed extra picks from 2nd though 7th we might pick up through a trade back deal. I purposely skipped Round 1, since it most likely would be a swap of position, not an extra pick.

With the depth of talent in this years draft in the 2nd, you choose players that you hope will not only be solid, but will someday be in the conversation about being Pro Bowlers at their respective positions.

    Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE 2nd

    Morgan Moses OT 2nd

    David Yankey, OG 2nd

    Trent Murphy, DE 2nd

    Troy Niklas, TE 2nd

In this deep draft you expect 3rd rounders to be the foundation of your team. If you are lucky, they become Pro Bowlers. But you are happy if they just become solid players that anchor your team’s strengths.

    Donte Moncrief, WR 3rd

    C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE 3rd

    Dakota Dozier, OG 3rd

In this deep draft in the 4th you choose players who may never become pro bowlers, but are solid good players who you expect to contribute very soon and for a number of years. They become part of the steady but not splashy foundation of your team.

    Cyril Richardson, OG 4th

    Kenneth Ladler, FS 4th

    Christian Jones, ILB 4th

    Shayne Skov, ILB 4th

In the 5th you take players you think have the potential to blossom in a few years, or as depth and as backups. And hope to be pleasantly surprised.

    Aaron Murray, QB 5th

    Andre Williams, RB 5th

    Crockett Gillmore, TE 5th

In the 6th or 7th you take players with high rewards/ high risk. Either they make it big or they crash and burn. You don’t expect them to contribute much the first year. Included are those that have 1st round talent & skills but, character issues that can easily cause them to crash and burn. (Lyerla & Lynch)

    Cody Latimer, WR 6th

    Colt Lyerla, TE 6th

    Aaron Lynch, DE 6th

    Hakeem Smith, SS 7th

    Tre Boston, FS 7th

    Logan Thomas, QB 7th

    Ethan Westbrooks, DE 7th

If they make it through the draft, you quickly gobble them up as UDFAs and give them a shot.

I like the way you broke this down. But, unless many off the best players at their positions are gone for impact positions I don't think trading back from the 1st or 2nd round is worth it. Especially, the way you broke it down it shows the ROI (or lack there of) of trading back is not worth the better player in the 1st or 2nd round.

    Good post, thanks!

  13. Not that it matters if we get a comp pick next year or not as it was important to sign good players as I think we did for the majority. Although, on another note, unfortunately I think a lot of our signings were players that could play STs. So, that means we signed a bunch of players to help Crossman's inabilities. We have seen that with ST coaches before.

Regardless, back to my point. How many players have we signed vs been signed away?

I count...Chris Williams, Dixon, Graham, Rivers and Spikes vs. Byrd, Moats and Carrington? So, 5 in and 3 out?

  14. The Bills lack a true #1 WR. Much less a stud TE. They need to find one. Is Evans the guy? Ebron? I don't know.

Agree. You can find a stud OT for the right side in the 2nd or 3rd. Maybe even a stud TE. But, you really need to be lucky to find a #1 WR in the 2nd round. Real lucky. For example Alshon Jeffry. EJ and the offense need the best value to fix a couple positions. WR in the 1st is the best chance to do so. We do not have a #1 on our roster, just 3 # 2's. Get a RT in the 2nd, the draft is filled with them. TE in the 3rd, but, we do have, I think, 5 TEs on the roster now. But, I don't think we have a #1 TE on the roster still.

  15. Last year, everyone said we should wait for this draft to get a qb. As it gets closer, who still feels the same? There isn't a Luck or Cam in this draft and I feel like we got a top guy of both drafts, but a year early.

I'm not saying EJ is going to be the man, but based off what we know now, I think we made the right move.

Teddy Bridgewater is the only guy I think is interesting, but he isn't a slam dunk either.

    Just thoughts

    Love this thread!

  16. Worth a flier on a reasonable, short term deal (however, I'm not sure how reasonable his idea of reasonable is--he hasn't signed at any of the many places he's visited). He is a legit #1 when his head is in the game rather than stuck up his ass. He wants a short term deal because his stock is as low as it should ever be and a short term deal will enable thim to prove that he's got his head back in the game and he can parlay a good year in a short term deal into bigger bucks next year on a long term bigger money contract. So, this is a very important year in this young man's career--defines his legacy as a player in this league. After watching him play at Rutgers where he had no apparent problems with Schiano, I think he's capable of settling down and giving us a good year. That would enable us to use our first round pick on an OT, trade back for Ebron, etc... It opens up other doors for us by not requiring us to take a risk on Evans (who I agree with others is a gamble). If Watkins is there I would go for it even with Britt (he's an electric talent and Britt would probably be a one and done player and we would be able to get rid of some dead weight this year, i.e., TJ). Just my uninformed, opinion....

I agree sign him. It will be a one year deal. My other thought would be he will be gone after a year potentially, if not sooner.

So, sign Britt. Draft a WR still...Watkins (probably not there, Evans in the 1st or Moncrief in the 2nd. Then during the draft after we select a WR try to trade Stevie for a 6th or 7th rounder. If not, cut him.

Are top 4 WRs would be Britt, Evans or Moncrief, Woods and Goodwin.

Cutting Stevie would essentially save us nothing in cap this year, but, I think it saves us approx. $7 million next year and we would be replacing him with an upgrade IMO.

    PS. Cut TJ Graham too.

Overall, much stronger 4 WRs. If one gets hurt we still have a strong 3. Keep Easley for STs and let the rest of our potential WRs fight for the 6th WR spot and PS.

  17. Remember when Bud Adams gave Bills fans the finger?

Do you mean Duke Williams? He is more than a decent NFL S prospect, and just because Rodak says something doesn't make it true. I did wonder on this same board last fall why Duke was not playing during Byrd's injury. The reason was they were developing him and had depth with Leonhard who Pettine felt comfortable with because he knew the scheme, and Searcy who had experience and made some great plays. Duke did play on ST, and well. No one is saying he is going to be Cam Chancellor, but there isn't any reason to write him off because he didn't play much his rookie year.

    Totally agree!

  18. While I'll admit to being under-impressed by Williams and Meeks as rookies, I really don't see how the Bills could have done much more to prepare for Byrd's departure... A 4th and a 5th round pick as insurance against losing a player you thought you would retain is not terrible planning...And I'm not going to put a tremendous amount of worry into how the two kids looked as rookies trying to adjust from College to Pettine's system...Both Duke and Meeks have excellent athletic ability and they started a combined 60 games in College...There is some potential there...That being said I'm certain another vet will be signed, or the Bills will Draft another Safety...Maybe both... B-)

I agree with everything besides the last sentence. I think our Defense overall will be even more improved again this year and these Safeties are the plan (we are not going to fill the position with a high priced player). We did prepare for Byrd's departure by hedging our picks with two players in the 4th and 5th rounds last year (a large investment). Duke was one of the highest rated Safeties in that draft.

I don't think Searcy is in the starting job equation. And, he was drafted by the old regime. Pettine used him in good formation and plays last year. But, he is just a situational player.

Worst case scenario if neither of these two young Safeties don't progress thru the offseason and training camp we can then pick up a vet that is cut for final rosters. That is worst case scenario, but, I don't think it will come to that. Heck, Leonhard will still be available most likely at final cuts. I think we are better off with the young kids though. :D

  19. Won't Branch and Dareus see snaps at DE with one of them in the middle beside KW? Mario on the other side? Branch and Dareus both saw snaps at DE last year in certain formations. Dareus played both in College. I personally like Dareus inside and Branch outside.
