  1.

this is a good take on it. If he didn't perform this year, which is a high possibility given the lack of chemistry he had with EJ when he was in games, and his injury issues, he would have had no value next year. This is a pretty good return. Also a good get for the 49ers because he won't draw top corner coverage (crabetree will) and will provide Kap another receiver.

It also saves us money towards the cap NEXT year. Where it would not have if we waited.

  2. Graham - Shouldn't be on a NFL roster

Woods - Unproven but perhaps could be a #2

    Goodwin - A burner

Watkins - High upside to be a #1 but has never played an NFL game

Williams - HUGE wildcard on and off the field.

We traded our most reliable WR at a time our starting WR core is very raw and unproven. However the bigger issue with trading stevie is losing a proven body that can play the position. Injuries happen and we have horrific depth beyond these guys.

I don't think we are good enough or have the depth that makes it smart to trade a guy like Stevie.

I think Goodwin is more than a burner. He was very good last year when Stevie was out injured and in the top 2 WRs on the depth chart for games. He can catch and find the ball. He also plays bigger than his size and has sick hands. Hope he plays more!

  3. The Bills brass must have thought they would never get a better offer than what SF was willing to give up right now. And SF has 5 picks in rounds 2 and 3 this year, so SF had plenty of ammunition to play with. Personally, I would have liked to have kept SJ on the team at least into the pre-season and use him as trade bait when some other team has injuries to their starting WRs. *shrug*

I would agree. This seems like the most we could get for him. They have done their homework and shopping and know the value. If they could have gotten a higher pick or a 4th in this years draft they would have done it. Especially since the 4th round is not till tomorrow, so, they could not have been close to getting a 4th this year. If they were close, I don't think they would have done this deal till after rounds two and three unless they were scared SF would draft a WR and this offer would dry up. Carolina must not have been interested too. I thought it was more than we could have got for him.

  4. This is just absurd. What if Williams doesn't work out? What if he isn't worth $6+ million?

We would be down to Woods, Watkins, and Goodwin.

We essentially just spent two 1st rounders and stevie Johnson on Watkins. Overkill?

Williams is only $2 million or less next year. It jumps to $5 the following year. He has a one year tryout or he will be bagging groceries. So, he needs to play to get paid. We are no hook cap wise as the Bucs have eaten that portion.

  5. Am I the only one who thinks Stevie is worth more than a bag of hockey pucks? I was very happy about the Sammy pick as it meant "!@#$ it, let's build now." We couldn't get a 5th round THIS year for him?

Agreed. I think Stevie's best days are behind him. I love our 3 WRs (Watkins, Woods and Goodwin) and like the chance we took on Mike Williams. The only thing that would be bad for us with this trade is injuries. I really want to see Goodwin on the field a lot and not just to stretch the field. I still think we should cut TJ Graham as he is not a NFL WR.

  6. With Watkins on board, we are stocked at WR, but still need a stud TE, and replacements at G and RT. Luckily for us, there are three, BIG, athletic TEs still available. There are more RT prospects than I can count, and not a single G is off the board yet.

With high picks in rounds 2 and 3, we are primed to fill all of these holes if we want to. With all these Ts, I’m sure a good one like Richardson from Tennessee will still be available in Round 3, so I target my favorite TE in round two because EJ needs a big target. He needs a safety net he can dump off to. And the Bills need some matchup nightmares who are huge (literally) Red Zone Threats. Take a RT in round three, then use your 4th and 5th as ammo to move back into the 3rd and select a quality G prospect.

We would then, on paper, have no holes on the offense. If EJ and these draft picks pan out, we are sitting pretty.

But even if he doesn't we already committed to EJ in 2015 by trading our first round pick away. That will give all of these offensive rookies and chance to learn and gel for two full seasons. If EJ is not 'the guy' our new QB, whomever he may be, will have a lot of good young targets and a very solid OL to play behind.

Go all in and finish the Offense!

I like where your head is at! We may be able to take the Guard in Round 4. But, if we love one and is there late 3rd I would be find trading into the 3rd for that Guard. Big day for the Bills! Big night! Can't wait!!

Agreed. Our defense is where it needs to be talent wise (though we'll see with the new scheme). All in on offense this draft!!!

    Agreed on our D.

  7. I almost made the same thread but worried I would get scolded.

I would say 4th round, definitely consider it.

I like everything the Bills have done. But, we have now given up...this years 6th and next years 1st and 4th. So, we can't spend a 4th, or even our 5th on a backup. 7th maybe. UFA would be great. But, I do like Taj Boyd as a flier.

  8. I'm probably in the minority on this, but keeping hold of the 2nd this year was a coup. Yes, we gave the first next year. But the 2nd is more valuable now in trying to get this team one more starter and over the proverbial hump.

Agreed. Love that we have our draft picks this year still. The strongest draft in how long?! So, great job not trading away any picks (not including the 6th for Williams)

Nobody knows how Watkins will turn out. Not even Doug Whaley. I'm just glad he is willing to push the chips in when he has a strong feeling about a player. Last year, he (and Buddy...sort of) doubled back and got extra picks. It seems, in this small sample, that Whaley has an open mind about the draft and how to approach it. Perhaps a bit too much guesstimation on my part, but I love his conviction.

Agreed. Love the open mind, research and intelligence into decisions.

  9. Don't forget about our 7th round kicker we drafted last year from FSU, someone needs a kicker, and we're all in love with the newly resigned Carpenter. So our backup kicker could be something to trade.

We do need so find a punter, cuz Moorman ain't going to cut it this year.

Am I the only one who thinks changing defenses again this year back to a 4-3 doesn't make sense. What if Schwartz get a head coaching job next year or the year after, we change defenses again seems like we're running around in circles chasing our tail.

I was more than fine resigning Carpenter. I hope we can get a 6th or 7th for Hopkins during the draft. Could happen.

  10. Whaley was in the Kirk chair for last year's draft.

Drafting a player into the league is the very definition of consensus building and Manuel was no exception. What's interesting about the consensus built around the selection of EJ is that NOBODY thought the best scenario would be for him to come in and be the immediate starter, that he was a very promising but raw prospect, with all the intangibles you want to see before taking a chance on such a player.

    GO BILLS!!!

    Loved the Kirk chair quote!

  11. First let me say, in all honesty, that I greatly admire the character and hard-working attitude that Manuel has displayed. Absolutely exemplary!! I'm completely in his corner and really, really, REALLY hope that he's our next franchise QB.

That being said, I'd really like to know from the Peanut Gallery whether you believe that Manuel was Whaley's choice or Nix's choice. Remember now that Nix was the Bills' GM and the guy who had the last say regarding whether to select Manuel last season in R1. Was Whaley trully on board with that decision?? After seeing Manuel suffer injury after injury last season and not make it through an entire season, could Whaley have some real concerns regarding manuel's durability??

Because if Whaley wasn't or isn't as enamored with Manuel as Nix was then he just might consider other options as they become available to him.............such as possibly the next B. Favre.

Interesting thoughts. But, 99% sure Whaley picked Manuel. Last years entire draft had Whaley's blueprint all over it. At the very least, Buddy and Whaley agreed on the pick.

  12. I don't know if I would call this best case scenario. We have too many holes to trade up, but I don't think we have so many holes that trading down would be the best. I think best case is jake mathews or Mike Evans falls to us. These guys would instantly make us better. If we get jake mathews in round 1, we take a TE in round 2. If we can get evans, then we take a tackle in round 2. Those scenarios seem more favorable to me since the drop off in talent for top top 6-8 players drops up after that, and it would be nice to get a top talent.

But if neither of those guys is there, which is very likely, then trading down seems like a good idea. Manziel might not be the only trade bait. Donald could very well be trade bait as well.

Trading to 16 sounds good to me. It seems steep, but this is a deeper class compared to normal years, and I think the talent at 9 will be the same at 16. Unless one of the top players falls to us, in which case you take one of those top players regardless.

I am on this same page!!

  13. A very interesting scenario could play out for the Bills.....and that is that Johnny Manziel falls to #9 overall. It should lot happen, but it could because so many of the teams that apprently need a starting caliber QB are willing to wait until later in R1.

At that point I think the Bills' phone starts to ring off the hook.

Whether you like Manziel or you don't doesn't matter. He will draw interest from other teams and the Bills will likely be given multiple offers to trade down. Dallas is currently sitting at #16 overall and they just might be willing to offer up the farm to be able to select Manziel. We're talking about R1, R2 and R3 picks in 2014 and possibly a R2 or R3 pick in 2015. Whatever it takes.

I see this as the best case scenario because the Bills have definite multiple needs. They must fill glaring needs at OT and DE. To a lesser extent they could use another quality QB, a solid RB (Jackson and Spiller could both be gone next year), a more athletic TE, a big WR, more depth at LB, and more depth at CB and S.

OR........they could shock us all and select Manziel himself at #9 overall. One stellar QB can offer make up for many of those needs mentioned above.

If this is or were the case with what Dallas would be willing to offer then I am sure Dallas will be able to trade up with someone in front of us instead of trade with us at #9 for that load of picks.

  14. Bradford's contract Per Rotoworld:

    2014: $14.015 million, 2015: $12.985 million, 2016: Free Agent

Signed 6-year 78 mill contract. All guaranteed money including bonuses and salary years 1-4 have been paid.

    Per Over the Cap:

MN's cap space for 2014 is just over $10.3 mill

I don't know how to see what the cap hit is if it is different than the actual salary? Per Rotoworld, " His deal would almost certainly have to be restructured for a trade to be worked out."

    Thanks for the info!

  15. I agree - and STL has a very young team which many feel is being held back by Bradford in his 5th yr with no playoffs, plus they get the contract off the books. It almost makes too much sense and therefore won't happen

Agree on everything. Question...what is the Vikings cap situation? Do they have room for Bradford's contract? I guess it isn't too expensive since the signing bonus has been accounted for and already hit the Rams cap.

  16. 1. E. Ebron - TE

    2. JaWuan James - T

    3. Will Clarke - DE

    4. Gabe Jackson - G

    5. Max Bullough - ILB

    7. Storm Johnson -- RB

I like Gabe Jackson in the 4th quite a bit.

Ju'Wuan James would be an excellent o-line pick-up. Plug and play starter at RT, and could play either guard position. Actually, would be really lucky if he made it to #41.

    I agree about Ebron.

Ja'Waun James could make it to the 3rd round. I would be totally fine picking him in the 2nd!
