Just this morning, my wife was working out with Greg Eiffert (Tyler's dad). Of course, we always try to encourage opportunities to land quality free agents. Greg argued that the Bills facilities are the worst in the league. Why would Tyler want to go there, he asked.

This is a good example of how poor the Bills reputation is among those players who have not spent time there. They just see the old stadium and assume everything else is outdated as well. We all know that is not at all the case. Going back to the Wilson regime, yes, it was the case. However, the Pegulas have spent a ton of money outfitting the facilities with state of the art technology. The is evidenced by the building of the new health and sports medicine facility that we learned about this past summer. I haven't been inside the facilities (except the fan-accessible portion) in many years, as I no longer reside in WNY. But, I do keep my eye on what's going on inside from my old friends that still work there.

Sure the stadium is old and spartan. It supports the economy of the region. But the players' facilities are first-class. Here, we worry about attracting free agents with comments like "who will come to Buffalo if we cut so-and-so", etc. Realistically, it is far more important to express to the rest of the country that we are committed to providing the best training and rehab facilities rather than whether or not they should like cold weather.

I found this very interesting. I'd enjoy hearing your comments.

Yeah, he should just stay at that palace in Cincinnati.

Or will they draft someone within the first two rounds and continue to develop their own young WR's?

    Or will they do both?

Will they make a big trade for an AJ Green, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham?

Will they take someone in the second round, cause as of right now there isn't a WR worth the 9th overall pick (which obviously can change)?

    What do you think?

If the 2015 Panthers are a model, then no.

That team had 4 WRs that had between 31 and 44 catches (Ginn, Cotchery, Funchess, and Corey Brown). The big stud was Greg Olsen - 77 catches.

I don't see Beane going with WR at #9 or trading for Julio Jones or AJ Green. I think he will invest heavily on the offensive and defensive lines and be judicious at the skill positions.

  3. Whaley was never in lockstep with the head coach. Everyone in that time period (Nix, Gailey, Whaley, Marrone, Rex) was under enormous pressure to break the drought but without a comprehensive plan or philosophical agreement within the organization. His shortsightedness was really self-protection - he didn't have time to be patient so he started throwing hail marys.

It was the correct call mathematically. The only thing concerning is if McDermott doesn't coach that way in games that matter. Our win percentage skyrockets if we convert and only slightly ticks up if we make the FG. The odds of getting 2 yards outweigh the cost. Even if you fail, you're still down one score with the Lions pinned deep.

I hope McDermott coach's that way ALL THE TIME.

    Someone who gets it!

The Lions played a spy on Josh all day which allowed a bit of extra time (a nice luxury to have for us!), but the line did a good job executing nonetheless!

This. The Lions played coverage and tried to spy Allen.

The Jets sent pressure and embarassed our O-line but also failed to hem JA in, hence his 100-yard rushing game. It is an interesting catch-22 for defenses that will only intensify as he gets more weapons.

Same, it would take Rosen and two firsts to swap them now.

    He kinda sucks

The concern with Rosen (for me) is just the eye test.

Mayfield seems to have a certain charisma and has more advanced touch and accuracy.

Darnold shows clear potential and has prototypical size.

Allen is an incredible athlete, the biggest, strongest, fastest guy with the best arm - the one you'd pick first on the playground.

    Jackson has great speed.

Rosen is listed as 6'4" 218, but he looks slight. He doesn't have the charisma, the arm strength, the physicality, or the foot speed that the other guys have. I wonder if "most pro-ready" is some kind of euphemism for lack of physical tools ... Nate Peterman was "pro ready" if you recall.

Am i the only one that feels Jackson is basically Tyrod 2.0? I don't even know his passing numbers, just really based on watching Allen and him in the pass game and he is extremely limited as far as making reads and completing passes. While he has won 3 of 4 games, that's in large part to the defense and his very very good running ability and Greg Roman using his legs to give him very easy reads and throws. Allen needs work but i'd be confident saying he's on another level passing than Jackson , i just think Jackson is that limited...

Jackson is a little bigger and just as fast as Tyrod. And Tyrod could go 11-5 with Baltimore's defense.

  8. Who, if any, of the five teams who drafted rookie QBs in the first round are experiencing some buyer's remorse and/or paranoia that they might have messed up?

I'm granting that none of the rookie QBs are finished products or lost causes and that they could all benefit from more weapons, better offensive infrastructure, etc.

I think the consensus right now would be:

    1. I think Browns fans feel mostly great about Mayfield and are just excited about the 2019 coaching staff and how Mayfield could continue to develop.

    2. Jets fans feel semi-optimistic about Sam Darnold, but are more than a little concerned with his penchant to turn the ball over along with the possibility that maybe they should have taken Josh Allen instead.

    3. Bills fans have a touch of fear from the past twenty years, but in general, feel really optimistic that JA is a budding superstar.

    4. Arizona fans are hoping for weapons, coaching, etc., but have to be wondering if they really messed up on the Rosen pick. Fear level should be high here as he just doesn't seem to have the physicality or the playmaking ability anywhere near the other four QBs.

    5. Don't know how Baltimore fans couldn't feel great about Lamar Jackson. Sustainability is a long term question but he has given them a spark and an identity.

Side note: I am THRILLED the Pats did not draft Jackson.

Additional note: The teams that put off the QB search like the Pats or the teams that middled it with later round picks (Giants with Lauletta, Steelers with Rudolph, Jaguars with Tanner Lee) have a lot to think about, because those look like wasted picks at this point, and there search for the future has not progressed.

Whatever you say about J Allen you can't deny he is fun to watch. Cant wait to see how Belichek defends him, that will be the acid test.

Mitch Trubisky threw for 333 and ran for 81 in his "acid test" against the Pats. JA will go to work on the Pats.

  10. In an era where receivers were not protected, Reed was incredible after the catch. One of the best all time.

Sneaky fact: Kelly wasn’t a good playoff qb.

This is a truly absurd statement.

Kelly has some bad stats in a few games that got away. He decimated the AFC in the playoffs for years and led the Bills in some very cold weather games.

The next play Clay makes will be the first.  Dude is stealing his money.

Clay had a great catch in 2016 in a comeback game against the Dolphins.

His first three years with the Bills were almost exactly the same as his prior production with Miami. The strange thing about Clay is that Bills fans acted like we signed Jimmy Graham in his prime and have perpetually been angry that Clay underperforms and Tyrod can't throw over the middle. It's not his fault that Whaley overpaid for him.

  13. Clay is not sauntering around like KB - there's no message being sent by cutting him now.

His body has broken down and he isn't an effective player. But it isn't his fault he signed that contract - it's Doug Whaley's fault. We all know that the Bills will cut him loose in the offseason, but there is no reason not to let him finish the year.

Has anyone done a study on running QBs?  Do they really get hurt more or have shorter careers?

I'd rather see Josh Allen running than an immobile pocket QB getting pancaked behind a porous OL.

Allen's best attributes are his big arm and his running ability.  I think Daboll should build next year's offense around those two things.  And find a backup QB who can do the same kinds of things - just in case.

Not a scientific study, but IMO the common denominator in durable QBs is more intangible - they have a great sense of where everyone is.

For example, a guy like Doug Flutie played into his 40s (granted, not all in the NFL) as a running QB, and seemed like he was never hit hard. He had incredible awareness of where everyone was. Russell Wilson has that today - he is running 90+ times a year most seasons and has not missed a game in his pro career.

RG3 did not have that. Michael Vick did not have that.

Some guys like Luck or Cam Newton think they're Superman - it isn't that they don't see the defender they just think they can take it. That changes as they get older.

This isn't true.  Watch yesterday's game.  He IS fast, and he has great moves to juke defenders.  He's smart enough to slide or run out of bounds on most runs.  No defender was laying off him to avoid a penalty.  One spun him around nearly by his neck.

These guys are still hitting each other on and with their helmets--witness the uncalled helmet whack Allen took late in the game as he was being tackled.

It's obvious these rules aren't changing anyone's behavior.

Of course he's fast. It's just more than that.

But it IS very hard to come up with speed from the second or third level of the defense, not knowing when the QB is going to slide or give himself up, and make that play, when the guy is 245 and the refs are supposed to protect him.

I'm not saying he was particularly helped by yesterday's refs.
