  1. The offense looks disjointed at times, most likely a side effect of having an inexperienced coordinator. Some of the play calls were just atrocious. The screen on 4th and half a foot is an obvious sneak situation and Josh is the only person that can prevent Josh from picking up at least two yards. Could've been called the play before and Josh would've picked it up.

Dorsey should probably learn how to go with the flow and let Josh make him look good. Dab would do this also at key moments and it's why some fans got sick of him and weren't particularly sad to see him go. You do not need trick plays with this much talent on offense. If you want to use them, 1st or 2nd down is the time to call them and really should be used when you've got a defense on it's heels, say after a big gain on 3rd and long to convert.

The front 4 have looked superb the last two games. The McDermott experiment so far is a rousing success. Much more aggressive, really getting guys into situations where their individual talent has the opportunity to wreak havoc. Bernard has clearly responded in a huge way after being handed the keys to the defense in the offseason. He is what you want out of a middle linebacker in this system. Quick to diagnose and fast to the ball. My hope now is that he can add some weight like Milano did and maintain his speed. If that happens Beane and McDermott may have really hit the jackpot with Bernard.

I am with you on the situation at running back. I think it's obvious that Cook is RB1 and Murray is RB2. Cook is the kind of guy you want to feed a little bit because if he gets loose he's capable of a house call from anywhere on the field. Murray is a great change of pace and is more stout against contact but man, when I see Cook run I can't help but think the kid has a chance to be special. (Happy Birthday to him.) Harris is good too, but to me it seems like he was brought in as insurance maybe? If Cook couldn't cut it this year?

Maybe, just maybe, those statements about Josh not putting in the preparation time and relying on ability aren’t as far fetched as we want to think.

I think Allen needs a stronger coach that will hold him accountable, when he’s getting to pick his coach and take on play calling in pre-season, I wonder if he’s not more of a spoiled brat vs the disciplined QB we need.  Doesn’t seem like he and Dorsey are on the same page, maybe that’s because Allen sees him as a buddy not an authority figure.

This is my thought as well. He's got a lot of yes men now, instead of coaches. His time committments outside of football could be a big part of it as well. Not hungry in the offseason anymore. Busy doing commercials, dating actresses etc.

I love Josh but something is up in the background and it has really affected his play on the field. That could be the rift between him and Diggs for all we know.

In his defense, I don't think Josh anticipated Dorsey making so many changes, I think his thought process was Dorsey will just come in and call Daboll's plays and that hasn't happened. And with McDermott focusing on the defense now, Dorsey is the top guy and he had never proven that he could be an NFL cooridnator, let alone an assisstant head coach in some capacity. The front office really should've had a hiring process for the offensive coordinator position, someone experienced enough to fill the assistant head coach position that Fraizer vacated. Someone that commands some respect, for lack fo a better term.

The team seems more and more dysfunctional, which is in stark contrast to when McDermott took over and that was the first thing I think fans noticed, was how prepared his teams were in the past.

  3. People ragging on Shakir for the drop but completely forgetting all the catches, including the huge 3rd and long conversion. Which he could also be counted on for last year. Once the season gets into full swing, Shakir will be a rising star in the NFL.

Cook could've been a breakout star last year but was poorly utilized. If the coaching staff can get out of it's own way, Cook and Shakir will be big names by the end of the season.

The core problem is this front office squanders away a lot of draft capital.  Maybe Elam isn't the best choice for CB2 when the camp evaluation and competition is over.  If its Jackson then fine.  But you can't use a first round pick on a guy that's going to sit on the bench in year 2 and expect you're going to replace the talent you lose through attrition or free agency through the draft.  On top of it I recall they traded up a couple spots for Elam in exchange for their 1st and other picks.  Previously they spent 3 high picks on the DL and for me Rousseau is the only one that's shows any promise.  Not a lot of production from that investment.

I see the same problem with the ILB competition.  A 3rd round pick used to draft Wiliiams and he might be buried at 3rd string on the depth chart.  If the idea was spending a 3rd rounder on a replacement for Edmunds then that plan might be a flop.  And if the idea was drafting for a potential high ceiling player and for him to ride the bench in year one then maybe the pick could have been put to better use at another position?  This team is in the Super Bowl window and potential turned to production 2 seasons from now is no help.

As for the player competition at a couple positions in training camp the coaches are left with what the front office gives them to work with to find the best 11 on both sides of the ball.

Is it the front office or the coaching staff? Beane has proven himself to be a wizard when it comes to the draft and free agency. He has never been shy about acquiring talent.

Utilization of talent provided has been the achillies heel of this staff the past couple seasons. I was never a big fan of Edmunds but, facts are facts. In college the VT staff had him all over the field. He was on the edge blitzing, he was dropping back in coverage, he was being moved around. They consistently made sure that he was a matchup advantage in their favor. He comes to Buffalo and is basically just stand in the middle of the field guy and wait for the play to come to you. I put that on Edmunds but I am starting to think that is what the staff wanted from him.

    That's a big problem.

The usage of Cook last year is another example. One fumble limited him to what, 8 games? On a team that struggled to run the football. And he, like Elam, was proving himself towards the end of the year as an explosive player. He's also in a camp battle this year.

And let us not forget that this is the same staff that started Nathan Peterman...

He's on the Packers roster. From what I've seen online he stands a real shot at being QB2 there.

Right now aside from the guys that are retired or rumored to be (Matt Ryan) the main guys I can think of that are FAs are Teddy Bridgewater and Carson Wentz. And some here will want those guys because "I've heard of him". But neither are much better an option than Barkley and Allen IMO.

Happy for him but that's a damn shame for us. McGough lit the USFL up and he really is a very similar style to Allen, in that you could put him in and expect him to operate 80% of the offense no problem.

Sort of related. But it doesn't change the point.  CB2, like every other position, has certain responsibilities.  The players are taught what they're supposed to do under various play calls and circumstances.  They get hraded on home well they execute the job.  Elam didn't start because he didn't execute as well as the others in games.  Yes, maybe he was best at aspects of man coverage, but the others were better at other aspects of the job.  It's very simple.

But as a corner your NUMBER ONE job is to cover the receiver. Allowing a couple extra yards on a run is a lot different than giving up chunk yardage down the field. Corner that can cover >>>> corner that can play the run. Make excuses for the shoddy job this coaching staff does in evaluating and utilizing talent all you like, there's a reason we haven't overcome the Chiefs to win it all, and it's usually clapping for no reason.

Edmunds being gone, will be blamed for every defensive failing.  While he was here, his detractors were told "you can't see his contributions on the field, because his role is so sophisticated, you can barely see him."  Now that he is gone, every missed tackle and every defensive TD will be blamed on the absence of the stealth linebacker.  The new DC will likely mention this often.

Never seen a more mediocre player so over hyped. The kid could not play the run if his life depended on it. With his size and speed he would be better suited on the edge with the addition of about 20 pounds. Standing in the middle of the field watching the play unfold and reacting a second too late is all I'll remember of Edmunds.

The secondary was middle of the pack and our rush D was top 5. Fact is Dane was the whipping boy for mediocre QBs on third and long the second half of the season. It  was tough to watch.

But he was near the ball! SO what if the opposing offense picked up 15 on a 3rd and 8!

You forgot to mention that we actually traded UP for Elam, this in a draft said to be deep draft for corners.

Btw, how do you like our wide receivers other than Diggs?

As long as Shakir is WR3 I am pleased with our receiving corps. Shakir had a couple handful of very meaningful catches on 3rd and medium and 3rd and long last season. I also am very high on Shorter and really love the addition of size all around that the front office has added, but again, it's up to the coaching staff to get them on the field and utilize the talent appropriately. Hopefully he practices "correctly" and is working with Dawkins so he can fill in at left tackle when needed.

I wouldn't do that. Officiating is all split second decisions. How would it affect you knowing you'd have to answer reporters questions on almost any call?

But I did like how the XFL miked the refs and had the replays done on camera. You heard all the conversations.

The USFL did this also and the transparency is great. No harm in letting the fans experience the process of the call, especially when it's a long pause of a minute or two while it's being sorted out.

  11. My biggest pet peeve with this front office and coaching staff is rearing its ugly head yet again this offseason.

We pick Elam with our 1st round pick last year. He is a physically gifted cover corner with great size and ball skills. When given a chance to play late last year, he was excellent against guys like Tyreek Hill and Jamar Chase, two of the best receivers in the league.

And he's in a competition for the #2 corner position... with Dane Jackson...

A couple days ago Chris Brown mentioned on One Bills Drive he may lose this competition because of... now get this... his ability to set the edge in the run game...

To me, this kind of thing is exactly why this staff can not get over the hump and win it all. This is a passing league. The defense is in a unique position to have two elite corners on either side of the field, which frees up Poyer and Hyde to make plays, allows Taron Johnson to be more aggressive in run support and gives the defensive line that extra second needed to get to the quarterback.

But we're worried about run support? From an outside corner? That's why Benford and Jackson are rotating out there? Who by the way, are typically getting torched in coverage. Dane Jackson is said to always be around the ball... okay but a yard behind the receiver while he's making a big play isn't exactly what I'd be looking for as a coach when evaluating a defensive back.

And Elam's strengths and weaknesses coming out of Florida were no mystery, this isn't something that should have come as a shock to McDermott. So why pick him there?

He is corner 1 talent level and would most likely be in that spot on a lot of other teams in this league. At some point this staff needs to get out of it's own way or they will waste the career of one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field.

I'd much prefer this over what we have now.

I'm against eliminating kickoffs entirely, as I want ST plays to still matter & have the opportunity to impact the game in more areas. I'd prefer the OG rules, but the injuries obviously make that untennable. So this is a good option in lieu of that.

But since I'm not familiar with XFL rules, how do onside kicks work with this format?

They don't, you get a 4th and 15 from your own 25. Technically, you can opt to try an onside kick but why would you? Offense on the field with one play is way better odds than converting an onside kick. I didn't see a single onside kick this XFL season and I watched a good 80% of the games. The 4th and 15 from your 25 is what the NFL needs to look at. Made for some exciting finishes in the XFL.
