Those reservist that said they might not defend the nation if it becomes less democratic are, by all reports, showing up to fight. One wonders if this crisis goes on, will the religious exempt (many of them the settlers taking more land) decide to fight. -

This is not going to end well for anyone. Some of the scenes coming out of the region are just horrific. Civilians and soldiers hostages of Palestians and being paraded around. Saw a women get dragged around by her hair.

Sure, let's hand these people over to Putin....what could go wrong? Just appease Putin and everything will be fine https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/10/06/hroza-kharkiv-missile-strike-ukraine/KHARKIV, Ukraine — A Russian missile strike that killed 52 people in an eastern Ukrainian village on Thursday appears to have overwhelmingly hit civilians — contradicting Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Moscow officials who claim Russian forces only attack military targets. Are you on Telegram? Subscribe to our channel for the latest updates on Russia’s war in Ukraine. On Friday, the morgue in Kharkiv, the regional capital, looked like the scene of a massacre as dozens of employees sifted through the bodies. On Friday afternoon, they announced they had found the body of a boy, Ivan, believed to be 6 years old, who appears to be the only child killed in the attack. Washington Post reporters on scene saw only one body wearing a military uniform. Strike in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region kills 51 Morgue workers said they had seen no evidence of multiple military personnel among the dead and that most victims appeared to be older but in many cases, they were difficult to identify because of the severity of the wounds. Thursday’s strike, in the village of Hroza, about 20 miles outside of the city of Kupyansk, was one of the deadliest yet in the 19-month-old war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as a “fully deliberate terrorist attack” by Russia. A missile believed to be an Iskander ballistic cruise missile hit a grocery store and cafe in the village where scores of residents had apparently gathered for a memorial service for a soldier killed in action.

Two new Republican primary polls of the early nominating contests of New Hampshire and South Carolina have the same two top takeaways. Former President Donald Trump enjoys a significant lead in both early states, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has established herself in second place — for now. In New Hampshire, according to a USA Today/Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll, Trump gets support from 49% of likely Republican primary voters, Haley gets 19%, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gets 10%, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gets 6%, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., both get 4%. In South Carolina, meanwhile, a Winthrop University poll has Trump at 51% among Republican voters, Haley at 17%, DeSantis at 12% and Scott at 6%. https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/meetthepressblog/nikki-haley-rises-second-pair-early-state-gop-polls-rcna118886 -
The Biden administration said Thursday it will bypass environmental and conservation laws for the first time to fast-track barrier construction along the southern border, citing an “acute and immediate” need to stop soaring numbers of migrants crossing illegally in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2023/10/05/border-wall-buoys-biden/

MADISON, Wis. — A man with a handgun showed up at the Wisconsin Capitol demanding to see Gov. Tony Evers (D) on Wednesday, was arrested, posted bail, returned to the Statehouse with an assault rifle and was taken into protective custody, according to police. The shirtless man had a holstered handgun and leashed dog with him when he appeared at the security desk outside of the governor’s office Wednesday afternoon demanding to see the governor, according to a statement from the state police. An officer arrested him for openly carrying a firearm. The man was booked into jail and posted bail. He returned to the outside of the Capitol with a loaded AK-47 around 9 p.m., three hours after the Statehouse closed, according to the state police. He asked to see the governor again. Officers spoke with him and asked to search his backpack. He agreed and they found a police baton, which they said violated state law because the man did not have a concealed-weapons permit, according to police. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/05/evers-wisconsin-rifle/ -
This from the end of the article: But the fact that he’s no longer surprised at how many young people are dying in town concerns him. “I’ll never forget my favorite funeral of all time,” he said, reminiscing about the passing of a 105-year-old woman. “All four of her daughters were still living in their 80s, and they were all sharp as tacks. … It was a celebration of a beautiful life that their mother had.” “There’s my perfect world: Everyone lives that long.”

People just don't live as long in Red States https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/interactive/2023/republican-politics-south-midwest-life-expectancy/?itid=hp-top-table-main_p001_f001 Americans are more likely to die before age 65 than residents of similar nations, despite living in a country that spends substantially more per person on health care than its peers. Many of those early deaths can be traced to decisions made years ago by local and state lawmakers over whether to implement cigarette taxes, invest in public health or tighten seat-belt regulations, among other policies, an examination by The Washington Post found. States’ politics — and their resulting policies — are shaving years off American lives. Ashtabula’s problems stand out compared with two nearby counties — Erie, Pa., and Chautauqua, N.Y. All three communities, which ring picturesque Lake Erie and are a short drive from each other, have struggled economically in recent decades as industrial jobs withered — conditions that contribute toward rising midlife mortality, research shows. None is a success story when it comes to health. But Ashtabula residents are much more likely to die young, especially from smoking, diabetes-related complications or motor vehicle accidents, than people living in its sister counties in Pennsylvania and New York, states that have adopted more stringent public health measures. A series of visuals including a map of the three Lake Erie adjacent counties, their death rates of which Ohio is the standout, and charts showing which parties controlled each state over the past four decades. That pattern held true during the coronavirus pandemic, when Ashtabula residents died of covid at far higher rates than people in Chautauqua and Erie. Today, people in the South and Midwest, regions largely controlled by Republican state legislators, have increasingly higher chances of dying prematurely compared with those in the more Democratic Northeast and West, according to The Post’s analysis of death rates. Ohio sticks out — for all the wrong reasons. Roughly 1 in 5 Ohioans will die before they turn 65, according to Montez’s analysis using the state’s 2019 death rates. The state, whose legislature has been increasingly dominated by Republicans, has plummeted nationally when it comes to life expectancy rates, moving from middle of the pack to the bottom fifth of states during the last 50 years, The Post found. Ohioans have a similar life expectancy to residents of Slovakia and Ecuador, relatively poor countries.
