The argument to keep him is

    - second most wins and playoff wins in bill’s history

    - highest winning percentage in franchise history

    - 5th highest winning percentage among active nfl coaches

If the Bills fire him he will immediately land another job and there is a possibility he is replaced with someone worse. Based on history it’s far more likely they downgrade.  But if that’s what the people want let’s go… change is change anyway.

Do you think he immediately lands another head coach job?

I can't imagine an NFL fanbase that would be excited about their team hiring Sean McDermott. It would be met with apathy from many, rage from the rest.

    Serious question.

Josh Allen not only needs to be great, he needs to be perfect. Otherwise he gets criticized by media and opposing fans because of the losses.

If he's not perfect, they can't blow out teams. If they can't blow out teams, they can't win unless Allen scores with no time left on the clock.

That's an impossible standard for anyone.

That's how poorly coached this team is.

    Allen deserves so much better.

Dorsey wasn’t THE problem but he was a HUGE problem.

Dorsey may be a meathead but the head coach should have recognized that sooner.

20 years from now we'll all look back at the McDermott Era as such a massive waste of time and opportunity.

I will probably get flamed for this thread, but here goes - can we have a real conversation about Diggs' drop off this year? He has not been his usual special self since the London game. He's dropped a bunch of passes recently and now has two INTs on the year that were ripped out of his hands. I miss the days when Diggs was putting CBs like Marshon Lattimore and Jalen Ramsey on skates. This year he is getting locked down pretty easily by true #1 CBs.

I mean just to be clear Diggs is far from our biggest problem on offense, but when the ancillary weapons are so below average you really need your #1 guy to be at the top of the elite tier and Diggs just hasn't been that guy this year. I worry that he is reaching that age where WRs start to hit a wall, and once it starts it can get bad fast.

    Flame away.

If you're seeing it then it's probably real but I just can't be concerned about Diggs or any other player when the head coach is such a glaring issue right now.

The better we perform in the short term, the more likely we will maintain the status quo in the long term. I don't see any way that isn't the case. It was already a long shot that we would part ways with McDermott after this year. It was going to take an implosion on the trajectory of what we had seen prior to Dorsey being canned. If they turn it around and threaten the playoffs it's not going to happen.

Do some of you feel strongly enough about McDermott to actual want this thing to implode for the greater good? Do some of you feel if we can somehow get back on track to make the playoffs that it would alter your view on him as the coach next year? Curious what the outlook is on this.

After the Broncos loss I was convinced that the season was over and McDermott had lost the team and a replacement was needed.

His decision to fire Dorsey surprised me. But it didn't change my mind.

But if this season turns around and replacing Dorsey with Brady is a big part of that, then McDermott deserves a hell of a lot of credit.

I'd much rather hope that I was wrong about McDermott and that he may be capable of being a Super Bowl winning head coach than hope I was right and root against my team so that it blows up and we get a new coaching staff. If they beat the Eagles on Sunday then the Super Bowl expectations are back and let's f'n go.

The D still still has injuries but manages to play okay.  Whatever we may think about McD overall, he's good at defense.  Over the years that he's been here, I think you could say about our defense that 'the sum is greater than the whole of its parts.'  McD fields defensive units that play smart and play together.

Unless of course the opposing offense has somewhere between 13 seconds to 2 minutes to move the ball down the field and score tying and/or winning points.

At that point McDermott's defense can't stop a nose bleed.

    It's a thing. And it ain't good.

I don't agree. Sure they COULD run it back maybe 1 more year with this roster but they are fast approaching a reset point. If they want to run it back 1 more year they should retain the regime. If they want to start the reset they should fire them.

But in the next 2 years it is conceivable, indeed likely, that Hyde, Poyer, White, Jones, Von Miller, Floyd, Morse, Dawkins and Diggs will have to be replaced. That is not even accounting for the guys who will hit FA. That is a LOT of turnover. If you are going to commit to begin that in earnest this offseaon it makes little sense to do so with this staff IMO.

And I am far from a McDermott and Beane hater. But that is the reality for me. I think this variation of the Bills roster has missed its window. So the question becomes does this regime get the chance to carry out the reset or is it time for fresh voices. I lean toward the latter.

All of those players (aside from maybe Jones, Dawkins and Diggs) would have to be replaced within the next two years regardless, even if McDermott was guaranteed to be here another 15 years.

    This is football.

typlcal poll the day after a tough loss.   results not relevant.

After 20 years of suck, I for one do not want to start over with a new coaching staff , which will lead to a completely re tooled roster, since Beane will probably go with McD.   Which means you are advocating for clearing the building and starting over?

    That is insane.

Replacing the coaching staff does not mean a completely re tooled roster, clearing the building and starting over. That's fear-mongering BS.

The groceries are more than sufficient. Just need a new chef.

    80-20 no.  Astounding to me.

Why would you think it's astounding?

If you think that's bad just wait until they are eliminated from playoff contention.

I agree a change had to be made and I will state I think Dorsey had a responsibility to change his game plans if Josh kept playing this way. Dorsey will learn from it and likely be a great coach at his next stop with an understanding that he has to build around his QBs tendencies as much as his abilities.

I don't see Dorsey ever being a "great coach". If he had that potential he would have thrived here.

Right. And yours is Allen is doing great right now. Expecting your franchise elite qb to not make rookie mistakes is too much to ask in your book apparently. Hopefully that’s not the sentiment at OBD or this team will never win a championship.

He's not doing "great" per se. But he's still elite and is dealing with a crappy offensive scheme, dumb play calling, inconsistently reliable WR corp, being on a stale franchise where the head coach has lost the locker room and the defense and special teams have fallen off a cliff, and horrible luck.

And regarding his "rookie mistakes" and turnovers, I'm going to keep posting this:

Hard to make plays when your qb throws it to the guy covering you. Cincy game.

If your qb keeps making boneheaded decisions it really doesn’t matter who’s calling the plays.

Your take is that quarterbacks need to be perfect to expect a chance to win. Got it.

No. I'd do what this staff has attempted to do. Reign him in and make him a better overall QB.  He's not cooperating.

If the 2nd or 3rd best quarterback on the planet isn't good enough then the coaching staff absolutely sucks at their jobs.

Leads the NFL in touchdowns and the turnovers are overstated.

Think it's unfair to come at the defense here. They did get off the field. The offense kept putting them back out there through turnovers and 3 and outs. The last Broncos drive was pitiful no doubt but you really couldnt ask the defense to do more the rest of the game.

Seems to happen every loss. The offense is clunky, frustrating to watch, struggles to put points on the board. The defense is plucky and does a good job of preventing scores and keeping the team in it.

At the end of the game the offense steps up and takes the lead with a clutch touchdown. And then Defense chokes and loses at the last second.

    It's a theme.

Man the length some fans go to excuse our franchise QB from any accountability. No wonder he feels like not working hard in the offseason to improve. In his mind he probably thinks he’s the greatest because most of the fanbase keep saying it.

He's not playing to his full potential right now. That happens to quarterbacks - even the great ones have rough stretches when the program is stale from a coaching staff that has lost the team.
