Edwards is a 3-4 DE with limited pass rush ability. Spencer Johnson is a good swing DT/DE. My hunch is they go with youth and keep Troup/Carrington instead of Johnson. Do I think either are really any better than Johnson? No not really but theyare younger and will be hungry for their next contract. Would I put money on it? No because Troup has back issues and if they insist on playing Carrington at DT he will fail. He was a very good pass rushing DE (in a small college conference) and that is where he should be - not in the trenches.
I think carrington is being played inside because he would be the 5th best DE behind Mario, Anderson, Merriman and Kelsey. Not much playing time for him at DE. Inside, the only thing we know is marcel and Kyle are entrenched as starters. Beyond that, it's a good competition for PT. He plays right around 290-300, a weight more appropriate for a 4-3 DT than a 4-3 DE (he's not Mario). Wannstedt wants his DTs to penetrate, not eat up blockers. Carrington fits this mold IMO. Not saying carrington cannot play, or wouldn't be effective playing DE, but he can help THIS team right now more as a DT. Maybe that changes if Merriman and Kelsey are gone next year, but right now, that's the sitch.
Regarding Edwards being a 3-4 DE, thats what he's always been, but that doesn't mean he can't be effective in a rotation at DT. He's been given the chance to prove he can play the position. If he excels, he will stick IMO. If he fails, he's gone. Johnson is a solid backup. It would be stupid to get rid of him.

Awesome PTR. Enjoy it.

1- Fitzpatrick
2-10- we pretty much know what we are going to get from Stevie, Fred, marcel, Mario, kyle, Byrd, Barnett, levitre and wood. If they're healthy, they will be good. we need good play out of Glenn, gilmore, Aaron Williams, Anderson, Merriman and any Wr not named Stevie.

Johnson and Edwards will be cut. Carrington will be a swing DT/DE. Kelsay is a serviceable 4-3 DE. I am hopeful Troup is the surpise performer at camp and solidifies the three man DT rotation.
Care to place a wager on that statement? I'll be one of the two makes the team this season. At this point, I think they both make the team.

This. Too much money for backups. Kelsey, Johnson and Edwards go, 10 million in cash/cap space freed up for much needed extensions, cheap young players with good upside kept. All assuming no DL injuries in camp which is of course wishful thinking.
We can for THIS year. It's doubtful we are going to cut one of those and then sign a FA with that money. Why not keep them (if they are deemed one of the best 8 DL on the roster), let them play this year and hopefully produce and help us win some games? The only way I see them being cut before the season is if they plann on resigning levitre and byrd during the season. I envision Buddy trying to lock them up before FA starts in the off season. If that's the case, cut the DL then and get their production during this season. I hope they plan on extending levitre and Byrd before the season is over, but I don't see that happening for both of them.

Probably because theres a roster limit, and there are alot more positions other then DL that you have to have players to play. They can't just stock pile d-linemen, someone will have to be cut so they can trim the roster down to its limit
That doesn't mean we have to cut Edwards, Johnson or Kelsey. If they are among the 8 best DL, I expect them to make the team.

You should never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever under any circumstances take a 3-4 OLB in the first round.
It is beyond stupid.
And since we don't have a SILB position anymore you can lose that too.
I would recommend:
QB---P1 (top priority) - Fine but we have Fitz and VY on the roster likely in April QB will be P6
WRF--P2 (pick WR if QB, can't be found on the Big Board within 12 slots)
CB---P3 - You have Gilmore, old McGee, Bone Head McKelvin and Brooks (Nickle - CB) so there is a need for another guy outwide
P4's:
TE---Tight End
OLB - OLB
P6's:
LOT--Left Offensive Tackle
WRP--Wide Receiver, Possession type
DE --You can never have enough young pass rushers.
OC---Center
FS---Free Safety
SS---Strong Safety
MLB - Middle Linebacker
First off, I find your posts very informative these days wss. I know we've butted heads a few times regarding the draft (although this year we were on the same page), I believe you're very knowledgable about the bills as well as football in general. In this post however, there are 2 things I'm surprised to here you say. The first line of your post....makes zero sense to me. We play a 4-3, not a 3-4. I'm assuming it's just a mistake and that you know we play a 4-3. I agree, 4-3 olbs shouldn't be taken in the first. 3-4 OLBs most Defintely should be.
Second, you failed to mention Aaron Williams when discussing the CBs. Next season, I see the CBs as follows: Gilmore and Williams starting with brooks and Rogers manning the nickel and dime CBs. I think mckelvin will most likely be gone. Either he doesn't play well this year and gets the boot or he plays very well with our new DL and gets a nice contract somewhere else. We won't have the money to resign him to a hefty contract with Byrd and levitre up as well. I think McGee will stick as our 5th cb....but if reasonably healthy, will get major minutes (and possibly even start). The only way I see CB as more important than OLB, TE, DE depth and OT depth is if McGee and mckelvin are gone AND if one of the youngsters (Williams, Gilmore, brooks or Rogers) gets a serious injury or get seriously burned all season. I think CB will be the 2nd deepest position on our team and a VERY talented group I hope to see us keep together for a long time.
My ranking of draft needs:
1- QB- it will be the number 1 need imo, until we have a superstar qb. If fitz turns out to be just that, scratch qb from the top 5 rounds.
2- WR- I think we have some decent talent with Nelson, Easley, graham, hagan and jones. I'd prefer to have a very good #2 instead of a bunch of number 3 and 4s. Maybe one of these guys steps up and takes that #2. Until then, we need another really good Wr, not decent.
3-OLB- I like the guys we drafted this year. I have really high hopes for Bradham and I think he will be a starter in his sophomore year, if not this year. I love Barnett, but he'll be a FA in 2 years and 2 years older. I'd like to get his replacement to start with sheppard and Bradham for years to come. I like carder too, but I'm not sold on him becoming a starter at OLB anytime soon.
4- DE- sure, we're loaded with Mario, Anderson, Merriman and Kelsey. Merriman is a FA after this year. If he stays healthy and produces this year, he will get paid. Paid more than we can afford. Kelsey is average and his getting up there in age. We can use some youth at DE.
5- TE- chandler signed a 2 year contract I believe. We don't know what we have in smith or fendi. It seems to be one of the weaker positions and could use an upgrade IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised to see all of the, make the team. If they want to make a serious run this season, they need to keep the DL healthy. The DL is the key to the Staches defense., as everyone knows. Edwards, while may be expensive and thought be out of position playing in the 4-3, is probably the best DL reserve we have (outside of a healthy Merriman at DE). If he's better than carrington, troupe and heard, which I suspect he is (when healthy), I can see him being kept, even with the price tag. If we aren't going to sign a player with the money saved from cutting Edwards, why not keep him and let him go after the season. Then use the money to resign Byrd and levitre. Johnson is a good player IMO. Last season didn't show how good he is, with him lining up at OLB. He's a valuable player in a 4-3. Kelsey, while not great, and Defintely overpaid, is a decent player that provides us with more depth. It looks as if he'll get ample PT. If he's a top 4 DE on this team, he should be kept, even though he is overpaid. Like Edwards' situation, if we aren't going to use the money opened up by cutting Kelsey to add a player that can help us win this year, keep him and cut him next year. Then use the money to resign/sign players.
Our DL is THE strength of this team. Let's keep it that way.

I think we are ok at LB, particularly when you consider the following:
1) our D-line will be amazing, this will make even an average LB look all pro.
2) Barnett played coverage in Green Bay I think. He will be fine.
3) Sheppard looked good-great, while missing all off season last year due to the lockout. Look for him to have a huge year.
4) We have some pretty good backups from our draft class, and don't forget about FA Scott McKillup. The guy was a First-Team All American at Pitt and BE Defensive Player of the Year.
5) Conclusion: I think one of our LB emerges as a Pro Bowl player, (Sheppard?), perhaps two (Shep and Barnett). If the rookies and McKillup show promise, a rotation at LB is also possible, making fresh bodies on D for almost every down.
I think shepp will be a productive player for us, but I don't think he'll be a pro bowler. I think we'll get 1 or 2 DL and a safety in the pro bowl this year (defensively). I don't think our LBs are THAT good. Productive with a great DL, yes.

Not around here because...he was a 7th round pick, because...Ralph is too cheap to pay for a franchise QB so he can't be one, because...the large number of NFL talent evaluators who post here say so.
No. It's because he sucked in the 2nd half of the year. A year in which we were in the playoff hunt. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt due to his injury, to the injuries of others and the play of our defense the 2nd half of the year. This year, no more benefits of the doubt. Put up wins and I'll believe. All this talk about stats is frivolous IMO. Let's talk about wins. Hopefully he gets us 10+ this season. The schedule is weak this year. The time to make the playoffs is now. Fitz has to lead us there.

So the criteria is bolting the Bills for big bucks elsewhere? Just wanna be sure, as CREEP congers all kinds of possibilities..
Joe Cribbs left us for 'greener' pastures in another league. That effectively wiped out a contending team and we crashed to the bottom of the league soon after.
OJ turned loose Nicole's 'juice' and Jim done away with his wife. But I'm not familiar with Kinnebrew and Smerlas 'creep'.. ??
Can you enlighten me on the Cribbs situation again? I was born in 1974 so he was my favorite player, by far, growing up. I was devastated when he left us for birmingham in the usfl. Being a 8 year old when it all went down, I had no idea of what the reasons were about him leaving, except he wanted more money. What actually transpired between Cribbs and Ralph? Was Cribbs in the wrong? He was one of the best RBs in the league and he wanted to get paid, that was always my take on the matter. Sounds like it was more than that though.

We know, when 100%, Merriman is a force and a playmaker. We don't know much about Easley at all. Merriman is the only answer IMO
-
My vote is to Kyle. While I think Fred is our best player, his backup is very good. As another poster said, if Kyle is healthy and plays his "A" game, we could have one of the best defenses in football. When you have one of the best defenses in football, you can win any game. Kyle gets my vote. Fred is a close second. If fitz were on the list, he'd be my 2nd. Qb is the most important position, by far. The difference between fitz before and after injury is monumental. Some think it's partly due to his injury as well as injuries to wood, Fred, jones, LT, chandler and Stevie. Whichever it may be, fitz needs to play like he did before his rib injury. If he plays like he did after injury, we're in BIG trouble.

I'll agree with this. Let's worry about this year, THIS year. Not saying We shouldn't worry about Byrd, Levitre and any other player up for FA but in all seriousness, they are contracted through this season. Let's make sure they keep up thier play and at the same time some of these DEs work out the way they are supposed to. We can worry about those guys and next years salaries, NEXT year.
Hopefully they are open to resigning before the hit FA. The closer they come to the end of the season, I think the less chance there is of extending. Get the contracts done soon. I think we got lucky with Stevie not hitting the market. I don't want to see either guy get an offer from another team. Lock em up

He doesn't know who we drafted? Strange.

I will include rotational players only at the first level of subbing:
LE: M. Williams/S. Johnson
DT: K. Williams/Troup
DT: M. Dareus/A. Carrington
RE: M. Anderson/C. Kelsay
LLB: S. Merrison/K. Morrison
MLB: K. Shepperd/T. Carder ®
RLB: N. Barnett/A. Moats
CB: A. Williams/T. McGee
SS: G. Wilson/D. Searcy
FS: J. Byrd/B. Scott
CB: S. Gilmore ®/L. McFumbles
Opinions? Will you go to war with that defense?
I don't think you understand the 4-3 defense and the role of a LB in the scheme. Shawne Merriman is a pass rusher first and foremost. In the 4-3 defense, the LBs role is rarely to get after the qb. If Merriman is on the field, his role should be rushing the qb or setting the edge. That's what 4-3 DEs need to do. I can't envision him playing lb unless he's strictly asked to blitz, which IMO, will be rare from our LBs.
Merriman at OLB is good for one thing: making our starting lineup look better in madden.

By the looks of it, tsw has dominated the voting process
1338410760' post='2477373']Cool, thanks for posting. I think he's the correct pick also. I don't see Jenkins getting much action with all the other receivers and RB's on San Fran's roster. Graham on the other hand should be the #2 or 3 WR.
I hope I'm wrong, but I see graham as a situational player this year. I think he'll catch a couple screens and be the target on about 6 deep balls all season. If the injury bug hits us again, he could get some real PT. I see Stevie, Nelson, easley and hagan being our top 4 wrs this year (production-wise). Freddy, CJ and chandler will get lots of catches between them as well. Graham still needs to improve his route running and make the transition from college to the nfl. Year 1 will likely be a big learning experience for Mr. Graham IMO. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong.

Took the bills over 7@ even money today. Also have a $400 bet at 85-1 to win the super bowl, Just with the hope of making the playoffs. If they make the playoffs, it's a guaranteed 5k hedging the bet against them. I'm praying to see Fitzpatricks play is closer to the first 5 games rather than the 2nd half of the season.
-
So people make the team based on their stats? Dwan Edwards started at 3-4 DE. We now play a 4-3. Last years stats mean nothing. How they play in training camp and preseason will come into play....and Edwards' big contract may too.
White had a better ypc than choice, so he makes the team. Lol. 3.2 vs 2.8. Doesn't say much for either. White had 8 carries in garbage time in week 1, than had 4 carries the rest of the way. Gailey coached choice in college and went to him over white as the 2nd RB option after Fred went out. I like white and would personally prefer to keep him over Choice, but to think they would keep white over choice because he had a better ypc last year is crazy IMO. The guy had 4 carries after week 1. The only thing last year showed is gailey prefers choice over white.
I don't see clowny making the team and I'd be surprised to see us keep 3 TEs on the 53 man. A third on the practice squad is likely IMO.
His name is Marcel Dareus. How and why people still call him Darius is unreal.

1338169838' post='2475743']
He can still play. Nix is trying to determine his long term health. In other words, can he make it through an entire season with back and knee problems??
Most likely McNeil wants too much money. As the summer moves along mcneil's leverage will decline.
Nix was smart to draft a LT prospect like Glenn.....absolutely. Does that mean he's ready to play the most important position on the O-line?? If he is, fine. But if he's not, which is most likely the case, then Fitz either won't make it through nthe season or will have to play injured.....and we all know how well that turned out.
Why not add McNeil to the mix if he's healthy??
He's rarely healthy, we'd sign him, take reps away from our future and then he'd get hurt. Pass. Go with the future. Same at OLB. These posts are what makes me not want to read this board. After the best off season we've had in decades, maybe ever, people are still complaining. Let's see if these guys can play, then complain.
-
carrington is a potential monster. hes a beast imo. he wasnt a 43 de last year, he was a 34 de. he played regular dt in 4 man fronts rushing the passer...
carrington and heard are locked in as backups. no way johnson or edwards stay as a 5th dt making that money. inactives dont make that, and they wont cut heard or carrington. that would make no sense.
that 5dt spot will be between, troup, dotson, ross, and gilbert. i think gilbert wins that job...
I can definitely see Johnson making the team. He's a good player and has been playing out of position in the 3-4. I think he's our 3rd best DT behind dareus and Kyle. Edwards, I would assume gets the axe.....but he's yet to be cut, which may give him a slight chance of sticking around, though doubtful.

I'd take the punter. If the Wr ran a 4.3 I'd take him.
Bills D-Line ranking is tied for 5th - Lindy's
