  1. Ralph speaks:

    http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/bills-nfl/article765665.ece

    Why spend big now?

"I'd like to see us make the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl while I'm around," the 93-year-old Wilson said. "I don't expect to be around that many years."

Wilson said he did not consider the signing any change in philosophy for him. This was the right time, he said, to make a big deal because he thinks the team is not many pieces away from being a contender.

"Yes that's right, I feel like we're not that far away," Wilson said. "We owe it to Buffalo, the fans in Western New York and everybody to make the move. And let's get going."

Wilson said he had no hesitation in going after Williams, despite the big cost, when General Manager Buddy Nix pitched the idea.

"I didn't give a darn about the money," Wilson said. "I can't take the money with me. The money had nothing to do with it. Buddy figured out how much it would take to get him. He put the price on, and we went from there."

good article! Ralph is the man!

    :worthy:

  2. I am not a believer in Fitz

HOWEVER, I do think that since Ralph hired these guys they need to be able to do things however they want. If they fail to win 9 games this season (their 3rd) then fire them both.

If they want to tie their fates to Ryan Fitzpatrick then that's fine with me. They deserve the chance to prove how they were so smart and everyone else was wrong.

But on the flip side, don't whine if it doesn't work.

  3. I sum Polian up like this:

    Jim Kelly

    Kerry Collins

    Peyton Manning

Yes, he was an above average talent evaluator and at his best building a team from nothing into something. But his arrogance undermined him in Buffalo. He had the Bills on the cusp of being a dynasty but couldn't finish it. The weak links were obvious, but they also happened to be pet projects of his and he GREATLY resented being told that his nose tackle couldn't stand up to an eilite running game or that his free safety couldn't get to the sideline or play the run. Nowadays, talent like the Bills had could win a Super Bowl, but there were some special teams in the NFC in those years and everyone knew it. Good veterans could be had for cheap in trades(see Charles Haley).

Can you imagine the 90's Bills SB teams vs the past 7-8 NFC SB teams?

They would win 4-5 Super Bowls today, IMO

Just one example: The 90's Bills vs the Seahawks team that lost to the refs (Steelers)

I could see 51-10 in that one

  4. do you want to go on a fantastic run of playoff berths, prime time games, winning seasons, relevance in the league, and maybe even a Super Bowl?

Then yes, you make the trade.

If you want to continue middling around with a mediocre QB then enjoy 8-8 or worse until there is a new owner and everyone gets fired.

  5. easy to knock Jerry, but Jerry just calls it like it is.

The Bills have been irrelevant to the league for a GENERATION. There is an entire generation of young fans who cannot remember seeing the Bills in the playoffs.

Jerry not accepting their PR lines is not bashing. If they were good he would give them credit.

BTW, Jerry is a HUGE Fitz homer. LOVES the guy for some reason.

  6. I stopped listening when, hoping to hear sports talk, I tuned in and heard pantheon of chicken sh*t talk.

    I know....

it could be a better station as the official Bills station though... a lot more access to players/coaches

It makes sense... But who knows, MSG being on cable in NY and Buffalo made sense too.

  7. Why the O-Line coach? Thought our line played pretty well this year.

    well, something has to give

It can't be a lack of talent and bad coaching, and good coaching with a lack of talent. Someone is not doing his job well enough.

If it's talent then fire Nix. If you think we have talent but cannot win more games than under Jauron then fire Gailey.

Just like the OL can't be one of the 100 excuses for Fitz's inconsistent (but totally consistent with his career) play but then also be a good OL.

Fans want ti every way: everyone is doing a good job and we have all the right people. Okay, then don't whine and complain next season when they continue to lose.

I'll say it again: when you have people who are in over their heads, NOTHING good is accomplished by keeping them there until some artificial quota of time has passed. Do you want to win or not?

Whether some guy on a message board can name an up and coming young candidate who would be better than Gailey is irrelevant. That's why we have a GM.

If I wanted to sit down and take some time I could come up with some ideas. Isn't that why the front office at OBD gets a paycheck? To be relevant in the league?

  8. In 7 years: Williams, Mularky, Jauron, Gailey...

Establishing the Bills as a franchise that gives Head Coaches 24 MONTHS basically guarantees that NO top-notch replacement would ever come here. It means they are already on the hot seat the second they take the job.

Who do you suggest Nix hires as Head Coach? Which "top notch" guy is available?

That's for our GM to decide.

I'll never understand the value of knowing you have the wrong man running the show, but sticking with him anyway in the name of "continuity"

What does that accomplish, other than putting off even further the chances of winning a title? It aint happening with Chan Gailey as the HC.

When you realize you have the wrong man, you do something to get the right one. Doing anything else ensures you yet another losing season, which will ultimately be a wasted one.

If you think you have talent, you fire the tired old coach, find a young up and comer, and you could have the 49ers next season.

  9. it means George Edwards is gone, along with maybe the OL coach or something...

If Buddy had any stones and any real desire to make his name as a GM, he would fire Chan Gailey and bring in a top-notch replacement.

It's clear that Chan is in over his head. We can either do something about it now, or "stay the course" in the name of continuity and do it next year.

When you don't have the right man, there is no value to waiting a certain period of time before rectifying the situation.

Yeah, it would be a tougher call to make now than next year after another 6-10 or 7-9 season. That's what the movers and shakers do: make tough calls.

Its very tiresome to see the majority blame fitz. However fitz played with several wrs/rotating lines and Rbs and witht he exception of the high turnover he has been the best QB we have had since Flutie was in the starting role. People are eluding the fact the Fitz has put the offense in a position to win 5 of those games we lost. Hes not a superhero and its hard to win a game with a minute left on a clock as a case on two of those 5 losses. But the defense cannot hold any opposing offense. The defense collapsed in Cinnicinati, Giants, Second game of the Jets, and the Titan game. More imoportantly they gave up 49 unanswered points after having a 21 point lead, If you even look at the losses the defense gave up 21 straight points without a stop. Defenses win chanmpionships whichn is the reason you will not see NE winning ine this year.

Defenses really don't win championships anymore. Not unless they are historically good.

Green Bay, New Orleans and New England: three of the top SB favorites have two things in common. Elite QB play, and crappy defense.

Meanwhile, I see SF as one and done. Not because of their defense, but because Alex Smith is just okay.

  10. If Fitz gets three more TDs in the next 2 games, he'll have thrown more TDs in a season than any Bills QB since Jim Kelly threw 33 in 1991.

I don't really care what his stats are. He is not good enough to win with.

Half of his stats and TD come in garbage time when the game is basically out of hand. When it matters he cannot get it done.

So yeah, he has the stats, just like Drew Bledsoe broke the single-season passing yards mark when he was here. Big deal.

It's a whole different game now. There was no illegal contact when Kelly played. Teams pass a lot more now. You cannot touch the QB too high, too low, too late, too violently, etc.

All I know is that Kelly is in the Hall of Fame and took the Bills to 4 Super Bowls. Fitz cannot even lead his team to a winning record.

  11. new onwer=Gailey and Nix and the whole front office go bye-bye

Half the people in the front office are Ralph's family/close associates, so they were all be shown the door in any sale

Nobody is going to pay 750 million for a team and keep Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey around, not with their lack of solid reputation AND 2 years of putrid results

There are tickets to sell... obviously the fans aren't as into their "Fitzmagic" as you would think given the message boards a few weeks ago.... unless they all wore empty seat costumes to the games

  12. 0% chance that Gailey gets fired while Ralph owns the team

You just won't get anyone good to come here, and IMO it's more about the uncertainty of ownership and relocation than anything else

NOBODY wants to move their family somewhere, get a house to live in, and 1 year later be in the middle of a relocation and all the horrible vibes, negative PR, and pure misery that is involved. Belichick said it himself: it is pure hell to go through.

Even if the team stays, what's to say that a new owner won't just clean house?

Then there is the thing about the team's accountant cutting players and trading players without the coach/GM knowing. That is total bush-league.

No, there is no top-notch candidate that is going to risk his career to come here and hope that he doesn't walk right into a complete nightmare

  13. I'm angry....

And some part of me actually ENJOYS watching them lose... It's pathetic and sick and I hate it

But the arrogance of this front office to not even conduct a GM search, then to trot out Nix who tells us "you wouldn't beleive some of the names" that wanted the job right before he hires Chan Gailey (a decent OC) as HC....then to try to sell us Trent (that happened but thank God it was short lived) and finally to act like they were smarter than everyone else and that Fitz was a real QB....

Yeah, everyone else in the football world is wrong, and the geniuses at OBD have it right. Sure. How long has it been since the playoffs again?

What a joke. I just can't stand them right now...

So what about the Bills team that, in the 16 games from the middle of last season to the middle of this one, went 9-7? Was that a complete mirage?

So many factors... but it is REALLY strange, I do agree with that...

One would think that it would be less streaky in terms of W/L
