At least that was the week after the Pats game that we ran the ball alot.

    Oh yeah you're right.

...so they pick one game to study and...go! 😅

I dunno I'm always thinking these people are all like football savants, but they seem to just be regular dudes that have been around the sport for a while.  At the end of the day there's only so much time in a week to prepare.

Josh three for a thousand yards and infinity touchdowns against the Seahawks, and Carroll literally said “we had a hell of a plan to stop their run game, I’ll tell you that!”.

It was one of my favorite things that’s ever happened.

To be fair Carroll may have been joking a bit.

Great stuff.  Thanks to those who explained what was going on there.

Still, I don't like the call.  When you're on the goal line, the defense can pack way in and try to take away plays just like this without risking a mid-range to deep ball.    But the Bills weren't on the goal line.  They still had the whole field to attack.  I think the question shouldn't change - what play do we have that offers the best opportunity to gain 2 yards?   So, you have to ask if the defense will be a goal-line defense, are there pass plays that are really high probability completions?   The answer has to be yes.   Why attack at the line of scrimmage when that is exactly the place the defense is selling out to defend?   You have three great short-route receivers - Diggs, Sanders, and Beasley.  You must have something that's very high percentage.  Play action, crossing routes, escape routes for Josh.

The thing is, this IS a high percentage play against that defense.  It forces the LB to cover a lot of ground fast, and he usually has to navigate traffic to get there.  We've run this play on multiple 3rd/4th and shorts in different packages (Beasley, Diggs, and I think Brown) with 100% success.  I agree with your skepticism about getting open against a goal line defense with all those great WRs, but the package was Singletary in the slot, and he effed it up.  Sometimes Daboll likes to send FBs out on 9 routes 🤷

...but the play and route are great for that situation.

I can't really argue with that.  But they played a different style of defense against WFT.  They were less aggressive, more bend don't break.  That's less impress in ve football.  Effective against WFT, if not so much fun to watch.  I'm not saying one style is better than another, just that McDermott likes to play multiple defenses.

It's really pretty cool.  Some could look at a run against bad teams and say it doesn't really mean anything, but it's the WAY we beat these teams.  Like last year we ripped off that huge win streak at the end of the year and really just used the time to show multiple looks and tweak things.  What I really enjoy is when there's nothing special or flukey about our blowouts.  We really just straight up outplay the other team.  Like you said- not a super exciting defense- just our defense, playing their typical bend but don't break game, and still smothering WFT.  I think those blowouts are so much more impressive than back when we'd start out on win streaks during the drought through a series of smoke, mirrors, improbable defensive turnovers, and catching everyone on a bad day.

14-3 based on my pre-season prediction. Predicted 13-4 with a loss to Washington, but we saw how that went....

The Bills have started a run. After the Chiefs losses, it's hard not to feel more confident that the Bills finally get over that hump.

When we play the chiefs THEY'LL be the ones needing that game.  Funny to think about.

Josh better or I will steal Brittany from him.  What does he have that I don't have?

Considering your latest inquiries?  I'd say it's more about what he doesn't have that you do...

Is this before or after the test?

Oh and Josh Allen gets right this game.  The combination of his angst over crappy film the past two weeks and realizing the defense is really good so he doesn't have to press will help him fix himself.

    Allen's 62.3 PFF makes sense.

Pressure doesn't explain all of the passing offense struggles.

It might not be the key to fixing the offensive issues, but it certainly explains them.  The article specifically mentions two things:

    1) Allen is demonstrating happy feet, and drifting to his left, while falling off throws.

    2) The right tackle is the lowest graded player on the team.

    #2 PERFECTLY explains #1.

Now, #2 isn't the key to fixing the issues.  You can't expect to have perfect protection on every play.  Josh has to settle down, and set and throw when he has the room to do so.

Agree with most of Joe's breakdown. The feet are the biggest part of Josh's issue right now. Not uncommon for QBs to develop that habit when their pass pro starts to struggle. As I said yesterday a couple of throws his delivery was a bit slingy too rather than the revamped throwing motion he was able to use in 2020. Just comes from being a bit frantic IMO. Josh needs to chill out, trust his line to hold their blocks and relax. He will be fine.

I'd be much more worried if the inaccuracy was coming on plays where his mechanics were fully functioning. That is when you worry about flukes and one off seasons. For now the case is when Josh's mechanics hold up he is on the money. When they get sketchy because of pressure (or perceived pressure that isn't there) the ball is getting away from him some.

He really needs a hot start in a game to get him going and it will all click.

    Yeah. This.

maybe after repeated exposures, (multiple times at the stadium, high number of snaps against the bills, etc) he may have a point.  after on preseason game, i doubt the guy is going to come in, completely relaxed once the bullets start flying.

I'm now extremely curious about your classmates.

  8. This was a thread way back in the offseason because there were a lot of bojo fans who wanted an explanation for his release.  The explanation was: "Bojo didn't want to be here and he sucks at hang time/direction kicks."

...the other side of the argument, however, was that Haack is notoriously slow on the release of his kicks, and that leads to him getting a lot of them blocked.  Someone in the thread pulled up some stats that showed that Bojo actually had a higher percentage of blocked kicks than Haack in his career.

So the actual issue here is, we have bad historical numbers, or the Bills have to schematically do something different up front to give Haack more time.

Let's take a factual look at Allen.  19 games last season, so how about games 10-13?  He wasn't injured or recovering from injury then AFAIK

Maybe even a record-setting offensive season isn't quite the panacea of unvarying excellence you all seem to expect.

Earlier in the season, Allen passed for this against NE:

    image.thumb.png.675cb92bc9c4380f797dc739d6ea9be3.png

We went into that game with another run heavy game plan

One step further: 95% of data in a normal distribution lie within 2 standard deviations of the mean.

If we look at regular season 2020, this range is between 53-85% completions, 107-461 ypg, 0-5 TD/game, 0-2 INT/game, and a rating between 62-151

I'm not trying to say Allen's been good the last two weeks, but his data isn't even factually outside the range of what we saw in a number of games last season to work yourself into a froth about "last year could have been an outlier and he's the same guy we saw in 2019 and and and and" spluttering.

"We have a right to demand better as fans" Geeze Louise, what exactly right do you think you have, who gave it to you, and where is this QB tree you think Beane can stroll up to and pluck an improved QB who never has a down game from?

One more time: Pittsburgh was missing 5 of their starting 11 on defense yesterday.  Tuitt (IR), Haden (CB) and Bush (LB) were inactive going into the game.

Alualu (DT) and Watt (DE/LB) were injured during the game.

Maybe...when you're missing almost half your starting defense, the quality falls off a bit?

Congratulations, you're achieving an unstated goal.

    For numbers, see above

You're pretty alright in my book, Hap.

    ...pretty alright.

    Yes.

I agree there was still too much pressure. I will review the all22 today but I think on a first view the pressure has got into Josh's head a bit and his feet are fidgety which is why he is still missing some non pressurised throws. I am not sure the line played that much better than last week. It just faced a weaker opponent.

This I completely agree with.  He's not losing his mind or anything.  He's simply not setting his feet, and I think it's because he's hearing footsteps.

Yes, I think he absolutely does.

McDermott was one of the most aggressive 4th and 1 coaches in the league last year.

I agree.  He seems to be perfectly willing to go for it when he thinks it'll really put things away.

One thing I hope we do from now on, though, is realize that that you absolutely need a yard, you put the ball in the best player on the field's hands.  Always.  We should never go for it on 4th and 1, in a crucial moment, and take the ball out of Josh's hands.

Exactly.  Didn't want to be 0-2.   Happy to be 1-1 with the Dolphins and Pats, because I don't think either is going to pile up enough wins to challenge.  The task at hand is enough wins to get the home field.   That's where the loss to the Steelers hurt.

The Jets are so pitiful.  I was not at all surprised to see Darnold lighting it up yesterday.   The Jets set themselves back three years or more with managing Darnold as badly as they did.

I think Pittsburgh will work themselves out of the race.  What matters to us will likely be the Chiefs loss.

And yeah, the Jets should've kept Darnold (although I'm not sure how high his ceiling is),  and I expect the Panthers to be right back in it this year.

...pretty sure we sweep again, unless Allen doesn't break out of his slump, but I think he will.

Yeah, I figured the left him in so he could gain some confidence. Maybe it worked - that long throw to Diggs could have been just what the doctor ordered. I could have lived without the designed QB runs, however.

Agreed on all counts.  The great thing is Diggs isn't frustrated with him at all.  He's been really supportive, it seems.

I seem to be in the minority on this, but I thought Trubisky should have come in after the score was 28-0.

To your point, I agree - since they kept Josh in the game, he should have led the victory formation and taken the kneel-down snaps. Not because of the danger of a botched snap - at 35-0, who cares? - but because he earned it.

I think Josh needs the reps.  He's in a funk and needs to work some stuff out.
