  1. I really like him. He's a projected low first round or high to mid second rounder, so he could be a good fit for us with our second pick. He is good against the run from what I've seen, though he's not a "thumper" as one guy said. He is what I think we need though, a speedy playmaker who runs sideline to sideline well, and flat out makes plays. He's also a great leader/locker room guy. He is definitely undersized, and that's his biggest deficit.
  2. I agree, I wouldn't take him over a run stopping machine of a linebacker like Greg Jones, but it would be tempting. Bottem line though, I think Mallett will go toward the bottom of round 1. Too many teams need a QB. There will be a big run.
  3. I haven't seen a single mock where Ponder goes higher than "the big 4" and there are reasons for this. As for me personally, I have seen him play and never walked away saying to myself that he's a future franchise NFL QB. He's a guy who will probably show good at the combine because he has all the physical tools, but to me his play is very average. Round 2 would be reach.
  4. Howard Simon was talking this morning about how Rex Ryan and others are now of the belief that the way to build a defense is from the backfield in. The thought is that lockdown corners make everyone on the D better, it improves the pass rush, etc. Also, is it me or does it seem as if there are fewer first round cornerback busts than any other position? With all that said, if they don't go QB or Defensive line at number 3, I'll be sick to my stomach.
  5. Newton has more arm strength than Gabbert and scouts are saying that Gabbert has some issues with his release. They say there is some wasted motion there, but hey, it's all a crapshoot a guess. I just love the Newton upside. If all goes well, I see him as a cross between Roethlisberger and Cunningham.
  6. Never claimed that Newton didn't have concerns with footwork, reading defenses etc. In fact, when I said that they have the same question marks, I was referring to footwork and reading defenses mainly. My point was that I'd rather go with the guy who's physical tools/skills are off the charts. True, Newton only started the one year, but has more big wins in that year than Gabbert in his 2 years. Winning big games is an intangible I want my QB to possess. I'm bothered by the fact the Gabbert didn't step it up in the big game.
  7. No way Gabbert over Newton. Gabbert played in an offense that was designed to make it hard for a QB to make mistakes, yet he made many. Didn't step up in his team's 2 biggest games of regular season, which resulted in losses. Clumsy foootwork. Questions about his ability to read defenses. He's big, somewhat mobile and can make all the throws. But, he has a lot of the same question marks as Newton. Why not take Cam then over Gabbert? Newton's a freak of nature and his upside is through the roof.
