  1. Hard to argue with Bennett in terms of trade and Paup for free agent. Acquiring Tasker on waivers is also way up there. Diggs is a great trade that will probably be good for both teams, that one was very fair.

Jerry Hughes trade was a good one, a trade from long ago that I really liked was for Frank Lewis. I think the Bills traded damaged goods Paul Seymour for him.

Two other free agent signings - Lofton who was already mentioned, and Ted Washington.

  2. To me, best single play needs to be a great, meaningful play in a game that impacted positively for the Bills in a meaningful game. So there are some great plays like the Roland Hooks play, the Don Beebe chase down of Lett a whole bunch of OJ runs in losing seasons and maybe even the Terrell Owens 98 yard TD that you think about, I don't think they are the best single play in Bills history. I think all the ones that fit this criteria have been mentioned:

    1. Mike Stratton hit - signature play in a championship game

    2. Jim Kelly TD vs. Miami - A statement game for Kelly and that team

    3. Ahmad Rashad TD on MNF - One of the best finishes of a MNF game and the start of the only playoff year for the Bills in the 70s

    4. The OJ 88 yard run vs. Steelers - Went up against the best team in the era and staking a claim that they could hang with them (which didn't last)

    5. The Bennett 77 second sequence - turned around that season and established Bennett as a top notch player

The comeback game and 51-3 are tough to pick one iconic play. The comeback game had the onside kick, the Beebe TD where he was out of bounds, the 4th down TD to Reed, Odomes INT and the game winning FG. The play in the 51-3 AFC championship win that I think people talk most about isn't even a play - it's the basketball time out the Raiders took because they were gassed on defense.

The one OJ run that I loved was vs. Philly where he reverses field and runs for a 75 or 80 yard TD.

Right when Fitz was on the verge of breaking into the top 30 career passing leaders and had Jim Kelly in range.

While you can make a case that Miami is "in the hunt" for the playoffs, reality is that KC, Balt., Pitt., Tenn., Buffalo probably are going to be 5 of 7, leaving Patriots, Raiders, Cleveland, Indy as most likely filling out remaining 2 slots. I'd take all of them over Miami so while at 3-3 they are in the playoff race, you know the bad Fitz is right around the corner.

  4. Murphy and Phillips benched? They were not on the injury report. Interesting that they activated Zimmer and B. Cox Jr.

If you want to have Yeldon active then you have to bench either Taiwan Jones or Moss and you're potentially taking snaps from Singletary or Moss, so I don't see that as something anyone would want to do.

    Why. Not Fromme

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme is still in jail for the attempted assassination of Gerald Ford, so she's not available and at age 71, probably past her prime.

Jake Fromm is still on the roster however and I agree with others who posted that since he's never taken a snap in an NFL game that is not a good plan.

  6. At this stage of their careers:

QB: Kelly is better than Allen

RB: Thomas is way better, #1 or #2 reason SB team is > present day

OL: Brought up a little but the Super Bowl teams' OL was terrific, better than present day

WR: Pretty even, Reed-Diggs is close, I'd take Lofton over Brown and Beasley over Beebe

TE: Not close Super Bowl teams better

DL: Bruce is the other #1 or #2 reason SB team is > present day

LB: I'll take Talley/Bennett/Conlan over Milano and Edmunds

DB: Today's DBs are better because of Tre and safeties

Special Teams: Super Bowl teams better in kicking game and had guys like Tasker and Pike anchoring coverage, Roberts a better return guy though

I thought last year he looked good at 1-tech but this year he has been a disappointment. Might still be recovering from the ACL. I'm not giving up on him yet. But I like Joe's suggestion to pair Butler with Oliver on early downs.

Also I meant to mention the quotes I posted are less than half of the total content. There's a lot of really good stuff in these articles every week. I can't recommend The Athletic enough.

As a late third round pick, if he can be a consistent rotational player getting around 35-40% of the snaps per game then that is a pretty good draft result.

  8. Can't bring Fitz here, the Fitz curse means Allen is getting injured.

Amazing that with about 4-5 more starts he will rank #30 all time in passing yards, and needs 1,900 to pass Jim Kelly. He needs to go somewhere he plays and ends up in the top 25 (3,711 yards away).

  9. This is definitely where the 53 + 2 on game day to get the roster to 55 is important. Beane has Lacy and Andre Smith on the practice squad, they can be the 54th and 55th players and be active on Sunday.

As many have commented, making them 1-dimensional (pass) would be big, then they could go with 6 DBs (Siran Neal). Between McDermott and Frazier I have a lot of confidence in them to scheme around the personnel challenges. I also like the notion that this puts more on the DL and with such a veteran group I can see them really stepping up their game. I'm sure they've known all week that both were out so they have been on it. Savvy, smart vets like Hughes, Murphy and Addison will be ready.

Having so many starters back also helps in terms of scheme and how exotic they can get.

  10. I would say no to Ertz. In the next 3 drafts, they should take 1 more RB somewhere in rounds 3 and 4 but should take TEs in 2 of the drafts somewhere in rounds 2-4. Then they have developmental players at all the skill positions on rookie contracts, they develop and provide depth. That way they can pay their core players (Milano, Allen, Edmunds).

Also keep picking WRs. Davis and Hodgins are a good start, I would think Beasley will not get a 2nd contract. The way Brown is playing they will keep him.

It's funny how McD is the savior these days, and Rex was a joke show.

Rex was 1 game under .500 for his Bills career; McD is 2 games above.

Both live/lived right in the middle of the league where almost all teams reside.

But 1 is horrible and 1 is great.

Too simplistic to say their only a couple games apart results wise:

    • Different expectations - Rex supposedly inherited a team ready to win now, McD/Beane had to do a total rebuild and still won
    • McD has a throw away game at end of last season they probably win if starters play so if they win that game his record is 26-22 (.542 win %) vs. Rex's 15-16 (.484)
    • Trajectory of team is totally different
    • Rex was known as a defensive genius and the defense wasn't very good. McD is known for his defense and he has delivered

How much more were you looking for on offense?  Diggs is a top-10 WR.  Brown would have had over 1,100 yards last year while Beasley would have had over 800 if they played all 16 games.  They're going to be a handful for opposing defenses.  Then there's Knox who, despite his drops, showed promise and it's not like there were tons of options at TE in FA or the draft.  Singletary ran for over 5 YPC.  Davis looks like he's a promising WR and Moss looks like a promising backup RB.  And they appear to have found a RT finally which allows them to put Ford where he's best-suited at present.  I'd say that's doing quite a bit on offense.  Then you have the defensive additions.

Is that enough to challenge the Chefs and Ravens?  We'll see.  But it's certainly enough to win the AFCE.

On offense they have a good combination of new and ascending players, and the ascending players cannot be overlooked:

New (as previously mentioned): Diggs - an upgrade of WR1, which as a result makes WR2 & 3 better (Brown, Beasley); Davis should be a better WR4 than Foster/Duke/Zay; Moss is better than Gore.

Ascending: Players that are young and should be improved: Dawkins (just coming into his prime), Knox, Singletary, Allen

So the only offensive positions that are stagnant are LG (Spain), C (Morse) and either RG or RT (whichever Ford doesn't play).

One can question if they improved enough but to be better at most positions is very good.
