NFL announces Bills LB Nigel Bradham has been suspended for the first game of the regular season. Post coming at PFT.

    john_kucko@john_kucko 55s

From #NFL: #Bills LB Nigel Bradham suspended for first game of season for violating substance abuse policy #BillsMafia

On one hand I'm pissed at the NFL and on the other I'm also pissed at Nigel. Horrible policy NFL. Nigel you agreed to play by the NFL rules. Grow up and be a man!

  2. Given the popularity of "Most Exciting Bills Game" I felt this thread was needed to do justice to our suffering.

For me, I am going to exclude Super Bowls because a) it's too obvious, and b) I associate them with getting together with friends, partying, etc ... so even though the outcome may not have been what I wanted, the atmosphere was still positive. Also I've found i can't pick just 1, so I have a top 3 (not necessarily in order):

    1. A Monday night game in 2008 against Cleveland. At the Ralph in freezing rain, Bills needing a FG in the closing minute to win. Bills get the ball to Cleveland 30, for what would be a 47 yard field goal. Instead of trying to get extra yards and making it easier for Lindell in the horrible weather, Jauron elects not to take any chances, we effectively take a knee on consecutive downs, and "settle" for a 47 yarder. Result: Lindell misses, looks like a goat.

    2. In 2009, red hot Saints come into town. Bills actually have a chance in 4th quarter only down by 3. But the defense is clearly tiring from being on the field so much. Instead of going for it on 4th and short from around our own 40, Jauron elects to punt because he would later say to make the Saints "earn it". Which they did, by proceeding to score 17 unanswered points on a worn out defense.

What's so bad for me in both of these Jauron games is not trying to win and putting his players in a position to look bad. And it was incredibly frustrating watching Jauron make the same gutless decisions game after game.

    3. 2011 game against Cowboys. Truly pathetic, and what had been clear to some of us (Fitz was not an NFL starter, and Gailey knew nothing about defense), became clear to all. People often ask what would a top Division A team like Alabama look like against an average NFL team, this game answered what would a crappy AA team look like. A smiling Romo played pitch and catch with his receivers because we couldn't get any pressure or cover anyone. Fitz was helpless as a newborn chick. It was clearly a lost cause from the first snap.

Our Last Playoff Appearance. Should have won that game, and that team should have went to the Super Bowl and beat St. Louis.

  3. I think if EJ has to throw 30+ it'll be because of the Bills defense, not because of the opposition's D. I can only see that many attempts in a shootout.

No EJ probably isn't going to the pro bowl - but If a DC is going to keep stacking the box, every WR is capable of taking the top off. I think EJ won't hesitate to let it rip this year- especially with explicit instructions form Hackett.

Whatever it takes to win. He should be throwing 300 yard games. They should be rushing for over 100 yards per game. That's what PLAYOFF TEAMS DO! If the Bills are "ALL IN" that's what has to happen. No pressure or anything. :w00t:

  4. Sounds basically identical to what Pettine was doing.

We also added arguably the best run defending LB in the NFL, as well as a very good depth corner. I'm also not sure why Schwartz is a "crappy" coach, nor do I understand why you'd fail to mention that we added a former DC as a LBs coach, and brought in a very likely up-and-coming DC in Pepper Johnson to coach DL.

How do all of these things add up to an "epic fail"? For that matter, why is it now en vogue to use "fail" as a noun instead of "failure"?

That's all good and great. The PLAYERS are the ones who make things happen on the Football field. Last time I checked, our LB core isn't something I would sleep on. Losing Kiko Alonso is a MAJOR loss. He is a BIG FACTOR on that unit. Without him going sideline to sideline, I don't see how Schwartz D will be effective. Also no Jarius Byrd is a MAJOR LOSS as well. Another playmaker who created Turn overs. That is an EPIC FAIL by the Front Office not to re-sign him 2 years ago! He will be missed and so will Alonso. With those 2 key pieces gone, and Schwartz poor scheme and not having the players needed to make it work, I don't see us having a very good year at stopping anyone this season.

  5. Sal's article on WGR gives a very good explanation of the scheme: http://www.wgr550.co...-drive/19508975

But this is what really scares me:

It’s also why the Bills so desperately need Marcell Dareus to stay on the field and play at a Pro Bowl level. In many defensive schemes, there are more players committed to helping each other flush out the ball carrier. Not so much this one. This scheme relies heavily on those middle-of-the-defense defenders to make plays in space and often by themselves. If one gets beaten, huge chunks of yardage are at risk.

Two thoughts: 1) Anything that is dependent upon Marcell Dareus right now is a total crap shoot. And 2) Yes, we added Spikes, but our interior run defense has been very porous for the last few seasons, and it appears to me this strategy feeds into our greatest weakness.

Moreover, I have never liked the idea of spreading the lineman so wide, remember a few years ago the Eagles scrapped this system in mid-season because they couldn't stop the run.

Our weakness has been run defense, and this system makes any team more vulnerable to getting run over.

Well, I hope I'm TOTALLY wrong, but I just have a bad feeling. Any help ???

Yeah, I cringed when we lost Pettine and hired Schwartz. Not gonna be a good year for the Bills. We lost 2 playmakers on the D, and have a crappy coach, coaching the D. I expect an epic fail on D ala Dave Wannstadt.

  6. Would a line up of Mike Williams, Sammy, Woods, Goodwin and Manual or Williams, Stevie, Woods, Goodwin and Bortles ( or another one of the early drafted QB's ) feel better right now. Somehow, reading about Manuel in OTA's is making me feel GREAT about the decision we made.

When he says he Is trying to remain even keeled and not too emotional he sounds like a true, mature leader. Being able to make throws in practice is becoming pleasantly familiar.

It would be a step in the right direction. We need something to rally around!

  7. We can beat all of these teams.

The Bills have the talent to do it.

Agreed. It would be nice to see it proven however this season. About time this team goes 6-0 in this division. They wanna talk big. Let's see on the field this season!

  8. If they move the stadium downtown, or NF. Tailgating is over. At least as we know it. It'll be like corporate beer tents for our foreseeable future.

Which is why I'd rather perform a Chicago Bears, GB Packers, KC Chiefs type renovation on the Ralph. Add another level over the end zones on top of the scoreboards or something. But keep the team playing where they are.

100% Greed. We do not need a new stadium in order for the Bills to be here. Totally blown out of proportion by Goodell and the owners! Just money grabbers in outmost sense of the word.

  9. A few weeks removed from the Sammy Watkins trade and Im loving this deal even more now than when it went down. The reports from the rookie minicamp are very encouraging. I think we are looking at 80 rec for 1200 yards and 10 tds with NFL rookie of the year honors. Think your gonna see alot of four wide looks which should get CJ going again with more space available. Williams, Woods, Watkins, and Goodwin. Thats a major upgrade over last year. Cant wait till september. Yea I know many of you are gonna come at me with the 'EJ' sucks blast. If your gonna bash this thread, be more original than that.

No problem with Watkins. I have a problems with the OC and EJ. 1st, Hackett hasn't proven he can handle being an OC. 2. EJ has to prove he is an NFL QB. I fully believe in Watkins, it's just I don't know if Hackett will put him in a position to win.

  10. John Kryk@JohnKryk 48s

Former @BuffaloSabres owner Thomas Golisano indeed intends to bid on #Bills, either alone or in lead with 1 other: http://blogs.canoe.ca/krykslants/nfl/former-buffalo-sabres-owner-golisano-to-bid-on-bills-source-confirms/

    John Kryk@JohnKryk 2m

This has been expected. But once newly named "transaction team" solicits bids, Golisano is expected to seek immediate #NFL pre-approval.

Oh god please go away Golisano. GO FAR AWAY!!!

  11. I thought for sure someone would say something..

Ask yourself would you feel better with Searcy/Duke Williams at FS or Chandler at TE or Hughes at DE or Pears at RT...which sounds the worse?

I could see a scenario where Buffalo trades down, getting a 2nd or 3rd and drafting Ha Ha...then addressing the other needs (TE, RT, RE and depth in other rounds)

Safety has the least amount of depth in this draft.

Searcy can handle it. There are always undrafted FA secondary guys we bring into camp and alot of those guys pan out. Ala Robey! Drafting a FS @9 is daft.

Bottom line: The Bills FO SHOULD have re-signed Byrd last year NEVER franchising him to begin with, and you wouldn't even be posting this.
