I do think Whaley is a good pro scout.  I also think having him at One Bills Drive would be a mistake.  We've moved on.  He's part of an unpleasant past we'd rather all forget.

I say speak for your self.....We are repeating our unpleasant past with the type of players that are now being run through one bills drive lately..... I like people that have an eye for  pro players talent.... and not the Kelseys and Schobels this regime seem hell-bent on looking for now

He took at team that was nearly as devoid of talent and went to the playoffs last year

Which basically.....makes your take look clownish

Oh you mean when McDermott made the call for Peterman to play instead of TYROD....boy that sure worked out.......Now that was clownish ... Thank God Tyrod got them to the playoffs because the fool of a coach was trying to keep them from going ........McDermott and clownish not that is a nice synonym....

It's the fault of being still early in a rebuild ... a rebuild during which the owner exacted a promise to clean up the salary cap morass by the end of this year.

That dead cap space looks awful this year and terrific next year.

I personally don't see a lot of gaping holes on the defense. Certainly still room for improvement, but "gaping holes"? I don't see it on defense. On offense, yeah. That tends to happen, though, that a new coach prioritizes the side of the ball that he specializes in.

And yeah, Smith-Schuster would've been an improvement over Zay, or so it looks so far. But the rest of that draft looks damn good. Tre' White at #27? Dawkins in the 3rd, trading up to get him? Looks very smart in retrospect. Milano in the 5th? Even Peterman in the 5th might easily turn out to be a good pick if he ends up as a long-time backup, here or elsewhere, though it's far from sure that will happen. You can't blame them for the Zay Jones pick without also praising them for White, Dawkins and Milano. And that was all before Beane even came on board.

But the rest of that draft looks damn good. really? Tre' White at #27? instead, we could have stayed put at 10 and got either Watson or Mahomes. Thanks, McDermott.  I think I take a franchise QB over a DB any day of the week. Dawkins in the 3rd, trading up to get him? why was that a good move because Bean called McDermott to tell him his boss was thinking about him....This is what happens when you get rid of the draft board that the previous scouting staff sets up....You rely on your buddy from another team to call looks very dumb in retrospect. Milano in the 5th?   you got to be crazy Why do you think our run defense is so bad now he thought a  linebacker should play at a safety weight  like his glory days in Carolina   Peterman in the 5th might easily turn out to be his hang noose  like TOLBERT why is he still on the team

Marcel is doing very well there. Fact is MCBEAN was a bad hire his offensive and defensive staff is a joke. That’s not good. We also now are 10-11 under this regime.

I was happier then words can describe when we ended the drought last year.  It had to be done. The drought was a dark cloud hanging over the Bills and it needed to be destroyed. We all deserved to see the playoffs and McDermott got us there. For the 2017 season alone, I am forever grateful.  I also realize this was supposed to be a step back and a“rebuilding year” Still, I cant help but feel

concerned. Being blown out in more the 1/4 of your games is not supposed to happen. Losing is one thing. Being non competitive in almost 30% of your games is a whole different animal. Im not sure how that will change. I am willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt because of last year, but I am growing more nervous by the week.

I AM SORRY WHEN MCDERMET TRIED TO PUT PETERMAN IN HE NO LONGER DESERVE CREDIT FOR TRYING TO END THE DROUGHT.... IT WAS TYROD PLAIN AND SIMPLE THAT GOT US OUT OF THE DROUGHT

So I watched our QB get obliterated on the regular this Sunday... I also have seen our running game be nearly non existent this season. Then I watch these press conferences and listen as McDermott and Daboll try their best not to throw their offensive line under the bus... They say things like yeah they had a rough game and Josh took sacks and it's partly his fault for holding the ball too long etc etc... I get it noone wants to just Chuck a guy under the bus. However I think they need to address the offensive line failures asap. Like be for real and stop dancing around it because it's an issue.

The way I see it... If the coaches think these lineman have the talent to play at this level that they can be serviceable lineman in the NFL then the obvious culprit for their woes has to be Juan Castillo right? Or if it's the players just not possessing the talent to get it done then they need to try to bring in someone off a practice squad or something right?

My worry is that I've watched LeSean McCoy fade away into nothing as a running back trying to run behind these guys.

I've watched defenses blow straight past our line on numerous occasions this season. I watched Green Bay run a blitz up the same gap numerous times and watch the LB smash Allen Everytime he did it!

So what is the issue? Is it these guys are seriously that bad and just not growing? Or is Castillo just utterly failing them as a coach?

Either way I'm hoping something is done to address that aspect of the team. If that line can't protect that rookie QB throughout this season say Allen gets broken.... Boy o boy what a total and frustrating waste of a season will this be then? What happens if Allen gets injured because he gets sacked how 28th time next week and we have Peterman for x amount of games? How pissed will people be about that situation?

So I'm just wondering what everyone else out there thinks about the state of our offensive line... The sacks, the lack of a run game, the abuse this rookie is taking behind these guys. Is it the players being that bad or is it the coach failing them? Personally I think it's the coach... I think whatever Castillo is coaching these guys up to do simply isn't working. I see them bumbling and stumbling, getting pushed into their QB/RB, I see defenders just flying through gaps umabated. It's horrible.

What's the solution? Can it be fixed or patched up sometime this season if at least for the hopes of keeping Allen healthy for this entire "learning" season. Does anyone know if Castillo is historically bad? Has Shady just lost it as a RB or is it really the line to blame? Is it really just Josh Allen not reading what the defense is going to give him fast enough and holding the ball making them look so bad?

Anyways just wondering how the rest of the fanbase feels about the situation and how if any way it can be remedied at this point.

This was what I had replied in the Monday press thread... It's my original rant

What I'm seeing is a HC try his damndest not to throw his o line under the bus... They are bad. Point blank period. So it's kind of comical to listen to him try to answer these questions in a way where he's trying spread the blame around a bit. I mean yeah I'm sure Allen being a rookie has something to do with the sacks and hitsbhes taken so far... but we can't keep trying to dance around the fact that this line is playing very poorly and inconsistent... Or maybe they're consistently bad idk.

So if we do like McDermott says and start in the trenches and winning the line of scrimmage then who does that fall on the o line players and Juan Castillo. So if the coach believes his players are talented enough to at least be a serviceable offensive line then I think obviously the problem can be traced back to the coach. So fire the guy and get someone else... Either find a couple decent lineman in some dumpster out there if he believes it's the lack of player talent OR fire the fricken line coach and get a guy that can get these players to play up to the talent level he believes they possess....

We can't run the ball and the QB is under constant pressure. Something needs to be done sooner than later about the line. Keep messing around trotting either the same players or the line coach out there for the rest of this season and eventually that shiny new QB the GM worked so hard to acquire is going to get broken. You're also wasting the talent of 2 very good RBs in what may be their twilight years of football. Wasting what they could provide behind bad lineman or a bad line coach. Can this be traced to Castillo? This incompetent play is either his failure as a coach or these guys are really just bad players who don't belong as starters on an NFL roster. Personally I think it's more about the way they are being coached...

Not only are the players bad but Mcdermet buddy is the OLINE coach that has been bad since his philly days . We get rid of one of the best ao-line coaches in the league for this garbage.

    7 hours ago, wppete said:

Apart from Dion Dawkins who is a stud the rest of the oline unfortunately should be cut or traded. OL is awful.

Dion Dawkins is no where near a stud he would have been a good right tackle to go with the good left tackle we already had.

Bills scouts must have determined that with some new coaching these guys could be good or they were only expected to be depth players.

Personally I don't think the line is as bad as it may seem.  When a defense doesn't respect your passing game, they can throw the kitchen sink at stopping the run and rushing the passer and that may be a contributing factor here.  The packers brought pressure and the Bills didn't make them pay.  Somehow it didn't seem to be in the game plan to run the ball much as the Bills passed the ball a good majority of the time even before the game was out of reach.  You have to run the ball unless your passing game is superior.  The Bills' passing game is anything but superior and when you can't run effectively everything gets harder offensively.

Mcdermett scouts have been wrong on a consistent basis

Sorry but the dead cap was an inherited problem that he has addressed so we have 70M plus to spend next year.  He had to get us out if cap hell and this team is the result of that.  Think about it. We have 2/3s of what other teams have to spend on a roster this year...that's the issue.  You think he wants some of these people?  No.  But it's the hole we are in.

1 draft pick doesnt fix but 1 pick and 70M can.

Here is another lie Dead Cap space.....    This was a self inflicted wound..  i would rather have SAMMY WATKINS , Marcel Darius than Kelvin Benjamin ,Itul llallai ( the DT they gave 10 mil a year for really..... what did he do to deserve that other than play with Carolina) ... DID we need to get rid of our receiving talent ....NO we chose to make that a problem; We had one of the better O-line coaches in the league that is now with LA RAMS,,,, we now have one of the poorest o-line coaches   poor coaches like poor players MILLS, Ducasse comes to mind

You heard wrong as usual     Mcdermett wanted and was given full control of draft he didnt like any of the QB    Whaley wanted Watson with Mahoome second but was overridden by Mcdermett......Don't start lying now that it's blowing up in his face

Don't start that lie..... Whaley was all set to take Watson end of story with Mahommes 2nd if taken.....It was your boy demett who wanted the trade down plain and simple. That draft was totally mcdermet from the trading down to talking with his boy Beane to trade up to get the sad left tackle and talking with a freaking college coach that he hired to get zay jones whom we traded up for .........this quack Mcdermet/ Beane  should be fired

He was told by the new man in charge to make that trade ,   sorry revisionist history will not work here …… I was at the draft in Philly ready for our new QB. I remember on the old board all kinds of posters saying the Bills should of ""tanked" to get Winston/Mariota.

My point is it will take more than a few games to judge Josh Allen despite what some say!

really Mahommes only played two games; Watson 8 before getting hurt. How many more games  should we give good ole boy Josh..... I could care less that a defensive coach drafted him and this regime is not smart enough to let him learn while the QB that got us to playoffs in 17 yrs continue to play..Thats a management 1st time coach 1st time GM problem.   Stop with the excuses either he can play or not... Well with this regime its obvious with the Peterman ,Ill take this Garbage to my grave , experiment they can't judge talent

The negativity here is off the charts.  Some people really are just out of touch with reality or just so used to losing.  The fact that people are calling for Beane and McDermott’s job already is not only reactionary...but it borders on the edge of delusions of grandeur

Sorry we don't do the rose colored glasses crap... We can see if you can acquire talent or not.... 1st they could have had Mahommes or Watson so there we be no give up any assets to move up  for an inaccurate third level conference QB ; 2nd ) Are you not tired of seeing Kelvin B not trying to catch a pass? We got rid of a 2 very productive (Watson,Woods ) WR for that crap and we gave a third round pick for  Kelvin . Oh How about the Jordan Mathews failed experiment don't for get we traded up gave up two picks for the ZAY jones disaster. How could this staff justify the  Mike Tolbert experiment he was  old as heck but  we let young, who were on their first contract, players go...….A rebuild should not have the  7th oldest roster in the NFL.....

Of course they are. This is Karma for Whaley stealing Shady for Kiko  or Highes for another linebacker (can't remember his name) I WISH THIS PRESENT COACH/GM COULD ACQUIRE TALENT LIKE THAT…...This regime is no more than Chip Kelly without the winning pedigree

Whaley tried to design his team using the Steelers blue print was ready to CHOOSE Deshaun Watson  but was chopped at the knees by the  pagula's  who seem to like dysfunction ie …SABRES,…..Mcbean want church going small , old  choir boys....When your GM biggest free agent grab is a hurt pass rusher in Murphy and overpaying for a D-tackle only because they went to Carolina. For anyone that has never heard it before, this dude Pat Moran has a great podcast called Moran-Alytics.  I guess that has been a blogger in Buffalo for nearly a decade and has the change to cover the Bills and Sabres for a few smaller publications.

His podcast is focused largely on Bills and NFL football and he brings on many members of the Buffalo media and former players as well.

I went through his earlier archives and listened to former NFL scout and WNY native Greg Gabriel in April just before the NFL Draft.  I've followed Greg on Twitter for a few years until he blocked me for disagreeing him. If you follow him, you know he is very much opinionated and outspoken.  He was a staunch critic of Tyrod and a supporter of Peterman, which surprisingly died down after the start in San Diego.  Go figure....

Anyway a few months ago, Greg was not a fan of Josh Allen or the majority of the QB's in this years draft.  He said that all of the QB's are "overrated" and thinks it's possible that all but 1 will bust.  He gives Baker Mayfield the best chance at succeeding.  He is unsure about Darnold and feels that Josh Rosen lacks the intangibles to be successful.

(Around 30 minutes) When Allen came up, he pretty much ripped him as a QB prospect.  He said that Josh will be another Kyle Boller or Blaine Gabbert.  A strong-armed QB who lacks the accuracy and mechanics to be successful.  He said that Allen should have had, at minimum a 64% completion percentage in his conference and probably higher given the competition.

Greg believes that these types of risks are the ones that get coaches and GM's fired.  If he were the Bills he would have drafted Mason Rudolph and then taken another QB as well.  He actually thought he might be a top 10 pick!!!!!

(Around 36 minutes) When the discussion turns to LB, Greg feels that the Bills would love Roquon Smith and compared him to Luke Kuechley.  He did mention Trumaine Edmunds but said that he lacked the instincts at MLB.  He said that Edmunds reacts instead of anticipating and is basically an OLB playing MLB.  He recommended Vander Esch as a better fit.

If you listen to this interview - you will hear that Greg was very opinionated on these players before the draft in April.  I'm not sure if he has changed his stance since then, but it's clear he is not a fan.

I agree with him 100%...…. pegulas don't have a good track record of hiring competent front office personnel  for the sabres or the bills
