If the Bills had drafted Allen under Marrone we never get to the point where Josh is Josh. Marrone made sure EJ Manuel never had a chance to grow, and Josh would have sucked his first 3 games and never seen the field again. We seem to forget that Josh was AWFUL his first 6 games, so bad even I thought we might have screwed up drafting him. And before anyone thinks I am saying EJ was gonna be similar to Josh, I am simply saying EJ was better his first few games than Josh but was never shown how to grow at all

Yeah, gotta think the teams coached by Marrone with Allen as QB would have had the same record because he didn't want to develop a rookie QB so Orton still would have been the starter. Put 2023 Allen on that team and they win the SB with Schwartz as their DC.

Thanks for your response.  You duplicated posts, by the way; NBD but you might want to delete one.

As far as hard to believe, no, it's not hard to believe that individually, they can improve.  In the post you're responding to, I laid out the jump in production by Beasley, Brown, and Diggs upon joining the Bills and having Allen as their QB.

What I think is wishful thinking, is that we'll get the number of improvements we need to sustain an elite passing offense.  Even Kansas City struggled through the season offensively and finished with the 15th ranked offense, though Mahomes did pass for 4,183 yds - and their offense still had Kelce as its linchpin.  Fortunately for them, Rice "got it" and took off towards the end of the season, and the rest is history.

So something similar could happen with the Bills, although, KC was carried through the season by great defense and I'm not sure our defense is gonna be there this year.

The thing I'm holding out hope for is, MVS and Claypool aside, these guys can catch the ball. KC struggled last season because their WRs dropped everything... they were the league worst. Allen showed in his rookie season that even with sh!te receivers he's willing to throw the ball to them. I'm assuming the combination of Kincaid, Shakir, Samuel and hopefully Coleman will have a lot better catch percentage than they did last season with Diggs on cruise control and Gabe "Kelvin" Davis. Hopefully Cook learns to concentrate on catching sure TDs and Knox is healed from his wrist injury, as well.

I am a Canadian fan, who has supported the Bills for over 30 years. I was not sure if anyone here followed the CFL. I was not sure that anybody who is a Bills fan state side knew that. It was a comment more related to the Kelly family. I don't know for sure but, I'm sure Jim had some input on his (Chad) game as a QB. I will not ever bring this up again. I also didn't know his problems playing college ball.

It’s ok. This is a safe space. Nobody here… actually, most people here (there’s always a few, amiright)… won’t mind that you’re Canadian.

  4. I think it's going to take time on both sides of the ball. I wouldn't expect a defense that swapped out both safeties, lost their CB depth to FA, turned over most of their defensive line and lost their best pass rusher to FA to suddenly light the world on fire at the beginning of the season, either. While they were obviously feeling the wear and tear, you can't replace the experience and communication of Poyer and Hyde on the back end overnight.

As a courtesy to the other board members, please use more descriptive topic titles. A single name if far too vague to post as a title and provides little insight into what specifically the post is talking about. The topic starter can edit the topic title line to make it more appropriate.

    Thank you.

I understand the premise, but in this case... I mean... honestly... what more did he have to say?

Blows my mind that people still get arrested for marijuana possession in the year 2024. Stupid to get caught but I don't think they should get suspended for this and I doubt they will. Probably just a team fine.

Do you think the Chiefs would actually fine them for getting the team's doobage confiscated?

Couple other parts I found interesting.  In discussing WR, Beane mentioned Shakir, he mentioned Samuel, he mentioned Coleman, and he mentioned MVS (a lot).  Chase Claypool as far as I can tell, went unmentioned.  So did Shorter and the PS guys.  This leaves me feeling Claypool better "show up and show out" or he'll be out.

Also interesting that he answered questions about Diggs and alluded to him at other times without directly naming him… seemed very intentional… and somewhat telling.

The bottom line for me is the Bills need WR with hands of glue. I HATE DROPS.

May the best WR's deem themselves worthy  at camp to be on this roster

Welcome to Buffalo Marquez Vasquez Scantling

You hear me? HANDS OF GLUE Marquez . Gracias in advance. BRING IT and we will love you in return.  GO BILLS

meh I keep thinking this guy has a lot of KC stink on him I dunno. He's gonna need to show up and out. for US.

Uhhh... while I can appreciate the sentiment, MVS and hands of glue seem to be unlikely bedfellows.

  9. My answer... not likely to be popular, nor is it technically in the spirit of the question as pertains to a breakout year in 2024... Keon Coleman. I think Beane is going to get dragged all season for what a bad pick this was due to a slow start only to have him bust out late in the season or next season (likely in more favorable circumstances) and prove the accumulation of doubters wrong.

I watched it. My wife wasn’t around for the Gronk and Edelman days so she knows nothing about them. She immediately saw them and said they are the definition of douchebags.

    So your wife is... 3?

  11. The last time the Bills didn't have a true WR1 was 2019. Beasley and Brown both saw just over 100 targets each. They were essentially it for receiving weapons, with both generating about 70 catches a piece. After that it was Knox, Singletary, McKenzie, Yeldon and Gore with minimal production.

I could see a scenario where Kincaid, Samuel, and Shakir each get 100+ targets, with Cook and Davis potentially splitting 70-80+ targets and Knox, Holliins +/- Claypool getting in the 20-40 target each range.

I think it's difficult to project what Coleman ends up with. Regardless of their receiving corps situation, I don't see them relying on him unless he demonstrates an ability to carry the load as a rookie like Kincaid did, which could be anywhere from 50-100 targets (Kincaid had 91 as a rookie).

Re the original post about Shakir, I don't see them using him like a WR1... and I don't want to see them try to use him like a WR1 because I think that would be a gross overestimation of his skill, but that is not to say I think an offense that spreads the wealth among these players couldn't work. He could lead the team in targets, catches and yards, but if he does, I don't think it will be as lopsided as Diggs 160 targets with the next closest just breaking 100.

I don't really support either of the OP's suppositions, that we're either fine with Shakir and everything is all set, or we're screwed. I'm of the opinion that we can compete with the roster we have, but that we're not going to get the offensive output that we're accustomed to seeing since 2020. I think it's a compromise during this cap reset and that with the addition of a true WR1 next offseason we'll be back to our old ways.

Hopefully having a bunch of quality receiving options despite not having a true WR1 will allow Brady to take advantage of the bottom of the opponent's secondary depth without having to rely on replacement level players like Sherfield and Harty to try to do it.

Coleman seems pretty smart and articulate to me, but even if he wasn't, academic intelligence doesn't really mean much in sports. It's just about having a football brain, or a tennis brain or a soccer brain or whatever.

Marino was supposedly terrible at his wonderlic but his football IQ was off the charts. I'm sure Peterman was always top of the class in his Bible study group yet when it comes to making throws on the field he's the equivalent of someone who needs R and L writing on their shoes

Dyslexia has nothing to do with arm strength. Peterman isn’t stupid, he’s trying to get by in the pros with a peewee arm.

On X, Sharp followed up that this stat was since 2020, not 2000.

That said, the strategy to just have Josh elevate everyone around him...I think he's done that about as much as you can ask a NFL QB to do.

It's a risky strategy just expecting him to do that each and every year.  If that's gonna be the case this season, he cannot be hurt or they go into the tank fast.

That makes more sense. I was questioning the accuracy of that data when you have Nick Mullens and Trevor Siemian in the top 15 and aside from Brady, Rodgers, and Big Ben there's no hint of a Manning or other 2000's or 2010's Pro Bowl level QB anywhere to be seen.
