  1. 6 WRs: Sammy, Percy, Woods, Harvin, Goodwin and Easley (you missed Harvin). I wouldn't bump any of those guys for Smith, and I don't think we have the luxury of carrying 7 WRs.

I liked Smith getting first downs out of the wildcat; that really helped the team. BUT, he could not throw to save his life. I don't think he's viable or valuable enough to carry, even for veteran minimum.

I appreciate his versatility, but think we have better candidates at each of those positions.

You do know that Harvin's first name is Percy, right? :)

  2. 1. Drew Brees was drafted in the second round.

    2. Brees was so spectacular his first 3 years, the Chargers drafted another QB looking to replace him.

Does that mean every QB is a Drew Brees? No, but every QB is not an Andrew Luck either.

The reality is a QB takes time to develop.

How many Drew Brees will a team throw away in it's search for their Andrew Luck?

The OP said he would draft the first QB taken after the Bills' draft pick. So the first QB taken after Buffalo's first round pick was Drew Brees, which happened to be in the 2nd round.

  3. Just to play off what MRW said: Since there was a delay of game in the Lions game for the field goal attempt, there are only two outcomes: 1) Accept the penalty and the Lions retry from 5 yards further back, and 2) Decline the penalty and the Lions retry from the same spot. So technically you could decline it, but since the Lions get to retry the field goal either way (since the delay of game results in a dead ball....the fact that the kicker still kicked the ball is irrelevant), you would obviously always accept to push them back 5 yards. When receiving a punt, you don't want to give the punter more room so you decline the penalty to make them punt from the same spot.

  4. Hackett: When Sammy goes deep, I want you to overthrow him.

EJ: But, coach I can make that throw. And Coach Marrone said that the goal is to win every pre-season game.

Hackett: Listen. There are more important things happening here. I guarantee that if you overthrow him (and follow that up with an errant roll-out throw, and a pick to Chandler), the Bears will have no idea what is coming.

EJ: Well, okay, I guess. But I still...

Hackett: Trust me. I have been doing this for a long time.

This would be a solid start to one of those Hitler videos...

  5. Love the topic...I'll give you one at each position:

    Aaron Murray - QB/Georgia

    Terrence West - RB/Towson

    Donte Moncrief - WR/Ole Miss

    Crockett Gillmore - TE/Colorado State

    Ja'Wuan James - OT/Tennessee

    Sam Longo - OG/Cincinnati

    Tyler Larsen - C/Utah

    Kerry Wynn - DE/Richmond

Nikita Whitlock - DT (LB/FB/TE)/Wake Forest

    Howard Jones - LB/Shepherd

    Aaron Colvin - CB/Oklahoma

    What, no long snapper?

By the way, +1 on Nikita Whitlock. The guy was a beast when Wake played Cuse this season.

  6. I was just listening to NFL radio on SiriusXM and they mentioned that Smith had a wish list of 5 teams to which he was willing to be traded (I don't think they said all 5 teams, but I believe it included the Patriots and Tampa Bay). Obviously the trade didn't work out. Regardless, Smith wouldn't come to Buffalo, and I'm not sure why some of you are interested in bringing in a guy with maybe 2 years left in the tank to a rebuilding team that is likely not going anywhere next year. This is the kind of guy a contender picks up on the cheap for a one or two year rental in the hopes he can help bring them a Super Bowl. I can see a team like the Patriots picking him up...but I have been reading a lot about the Ravens being interested. I can see that happening too.

  7. There is no way Carpenter signs with the Bills for any kind of team-friendly/minimal guarantee deal, and he's not going to sign with us if he thinks he has to battle Hopkins in training camp. He played so well last season that some team will make him a good offer to come in and be the guy, so we will need to do the same if we want to keep him.

Ultimately, I think the Bills will go with Hopkins because it will be more cost-effective, he's got the stronger leg, and because kicker performance can vary so much from year to year, so we don't know that Carpenter would be any better than Hopkins next year.

I'd be happy with either one, and I truly do appreciate the performance Carpenter gave us last season, but I won't be too phased either way.

  8. I don't know enough about each college team to pick out a lesser known player from them. But I have watched every Syracuse game the past couple years. I think DT Jay Bromley will be a real good player but I think we'll avoid him because he's a Cuse guy. His measurables aren't that noteworthy but he always put his stamp on games. I think he could be picked in the late 5th or later.

    I can second this.

  9. I think this "Salary cap hole" is just an excuse. There are ways to make it work without getting into salary cap problems. Good upstairs people should be able to figure that out. Now, I for one want to keep all the good players we can keep. Byrd especially. He should be signed long term. If he's not, than that is a very telling fact, that the Bills are pretty much insincere on every building a winning team here.

Bottom line. You gotta pay your football players and you got to bring new players in here. You don't stop at Mario Williams. You keep looking for the best talent and keep adding. Some players may not be worth it. But you have to keep looking.

PS. Any nonsense about Trading or cutting Dareus and Spiller is foolish speak to me. I have no idea why you'd even entertain the thought. My opinion!

I think saying that "good upstairs people" can figure out salary cap issues is a convenient excuse to help people justify the personnel decisions that they'd like to see the team make. Salary cap isn't something that can be swept under the rug. Every move has dependencies and ramifications on every other move you can make, and it all has to work long-term under the context of the salary cap. I of course agree that we need to keep as many good players as we can, but always with the caveat that it has to make sense with the overall plan. I also don't believe you can isolate a single decision (about Byrd....albeit a big decision) and claim that if it doesn't go the way you want, then it must mean the Bills don't care about building a winning team. That's just ridiculous.

This isn't a personal attack at you...more like a strong difference of opinion...so I hope it doesn't come off that way. I want the Bills to win as badly as you do. It can be really difficult as fans when we don't truly have insight into a team's plans, and when you lose all the time, every single move is going to be painstakingly scrutinized -- which is why we're currently in this offseason topic hell. :D

(For the record, I'd like to see the Bills re-sign Byrd long-term, even if it means Top 5 safety money)
