Well, you have compartmentalized Bucky's consistent negativity towards UB into the one column I referenced, but it was far more than that. And I am not after cow-towing, but simply objectivity.
With every byline, Bucky was critical of UB, and what exactly does 'sliding football back and put a bunch of eggs into the basketball program' mean? It means nothing. It's a nebulous, unsubstantiated way of sounding like you have an understanding about UB's athletic finances and know what you are talking about. If you'd like some recent context, here's an article about the state of the program from THIS YEAR before they hired our new AD Mark Alnutt. Alnutt has already made a significant impact, but here Bucky thinks he needs to offer up candidates and train the prospective AD into believing that football will never matter here.
The condescension and number of backhanded compliments in it are blood-boiling. And poor Bucky now wants to know why he can't get press credentials. Boo fricking hoo. He should be banned from the UB campus. It's no surprise to me that the Buffalo News finally shut him down.
Like any school, UB's athletic programs are only as successful as the level of athletes they can recruit to play here. We now have coaches in place that have demonstrated considerable acumen in that critical department, and the results are speaking for themselves.
And if you have not seen it yet, here is exactly why UB is succeeding... coaches like strength coach Lewis Caralla.

Bucky admonished former AD Danny White at every turn, despite White helping to build what now stands (and who has already injected considerable life into the UCF athletic programs). Visionary Bucky wanted to scale back the level of football competition, presumably to better match Coach Leipold's experience. Instead, the program will soon have a double digit win season and several high NFL draft picks to go along with All-Pro Khalil Mack. He's an idiot.
We are now stepping into the golden age of UB Athletics, with football at 9-1 and an impending bowl bid. MBB is heavily favored to win the MAC and then some, & WBB is coming off a sweet 16 appearance. We will enjoy Coach Oats and Coach Jack as long as we have them, as they are each bound to get tough-to-refuse offers as soon as this spring.
And these three highest profile UB athletic programs are all built to sustain that level of success for the foreseeable future.
Eff off Bucky!!!
(and Sully, who was above covering UB athletics unless it meant a free road trip to Cleveland or wherever)

Vontae Davis sucked from day one here, and being inactive week 1 should have tipped everyone off to that fact
The John Ross TD in preseason was like an HS basketball player versus an old man at the Y
Whaley really sucked, and it has been proven out over time
Beane has unflinchingly jettisoned a ton of underachieving dead cap weight, and he is not done
(that means you, Shaq Lawson & Jerry Hughes)
Dareus was one of the top paid athletes IN SPORT, and is barely a role player for JAX
I still trust the process...
but moreso if it includes Bodine replacing Groy & an experienced backup like Landry Jones or Matt Moore in here to help the kid

Schmidt is a good, Chris Mohr-esque hang-time punter who also quite often lands the ball within 5 yards of the sideline. Those skills are underappreciated by fans, but a special teams coach can earn a living with a dependable coverage unit that takes advantage of them.
Colton is definitely in the top 32 in the world, so if the Bills keep Jon Ryan over him (and I think they will)...
... I'd also bet that Schmidtykicker gets claimed by another NFL club & punts for them this year.

Zay had me at 'wearing the OJ chase t-shirt on draft day'.... but I wouldn't bet a nickel on him making any major leaps forward.
Zay is a borderline bust, an almost first-round draft pick who could not hang onto the ball. It always seemed to glance off his mitts as though they were frying pans. He needs to dramatically improve this to see the field again, let alone stick in this league. I don't really care about the labrum injury, or who his dad is, or whatever he did at ECU.
I always hate looking back at who was picked in the draft and complaining about the guy we settled on. Draft hindsight is always 20/20, and the fact that we hired Zay's college coach as his position coach is only hurting my belief in him at this point.
JuJu Smith-Schuster was taken about 25 picks after Zay, and has so outperformed him (and nearly every other NFL WR) in the last half of his rookie season that it is mind-boggling. I realize Juju has a much better, likely HOF-caliber QB... but #19 has been nothing short of a dynamic playmaker for Pittsburgh who stole Martavis Bryant's job in short order. I would argue he is probably already among the top 5 WRs in the league at this moment. He can do it all.
And that semi-cheapshot crackback on Vontaze Burfict a few weeks ago was just magnificent, and could only be administered by a player with immensely brass stones. Juju is 6'3", and just turned 21 maybe a month ago. But If he didn't fully commit to that crackback on a true cheap shot artist who outweighs him by about 35 lbs., #19 would probably have taken the impact himself. For Burfict, it was a beautiful representation of the karma police a-calling in that tough Steeler/Bengal rivalry.
I think Zay might seriously need to try a sports psychologist this offseason. It was that bad.
And I can't wait to see what Juju can do against those Jags DBs today!

McDermott is by no means perfect so far, but he's definitely the best coach to come our way in the drought era. He has effectively replaced every member of the secondary, and that group is suddenly a team strength. He knows how to lead men, and I'd say he has shown that he can get the most out of a group of them. We will probably be 9-7, and much of this board had them at 4-12 or worse once Watkins & Darby were shipped off.McDermott and Beane were in a tough spot - trying to be competitive while also doing what's right for the future. You can't have your cake and eat it too, but they did about as good a job of it as you possibly could. We are just not ready to do any damage in the NFL playoffs yet. The Pats and/or Steelers would totally dismantle us. So I don't care a lot about ending the drought this year, I just think we will need to employ a better QB before we can be taken seriously as a contender.Tyrod is not nearly the worst we have seen at QB, but I am convinced he is only just good enough to tease you. We need quicker & more threatening downfield ball distribution from that position. So blame McD for the Peterman start if you must, but I actually credit him for trying something different when our offense was so inept (at NYJ & vs NO). I'm not a Tyrod hater, he is what he is. He can scramble and make plays when there isn't one. Him and McCoy are the only offensive weapons on this team. But he still can't make the easy plays. If you are this excited about 180 yards passing then you probably haven't watched a real QB in a while. Let's not get it twisted. The DEFENSE and Hauschka won that game
I am about here with Tyrod as well.
Was quite critical of him before Denver, so I have sent TT and Dennison edible arrangements and I'll gladly eat some crow.

Oddly I feel the need to defend EJ's game a little on Sunday.
EJ started 8/8 and on his 9th throw he threw a fantastic TD that Cook dropped. Now 8/9, his 10th throw was a first down throw dropped by Cooper (I think it was Cooper). Now 8/10, his 11th throw was a gorgeous pass to Cook into the end zone for another TD, except Cook dropped his 2nd TD within 3 passes on the same drive, right through his hands.
If Cook catches EITHER of those, the Raiders only need a FG to win on the final drive where they had over 3 minutes left. Instead, they have to take the FG on 4th down and make it a 6 point game instead of a 2 point game had it been a TD.
Having no timeouts, the Raiders had to press and try and push the ball downfield and EJ through a high point ball downfield to what is SUPPOSED to be an Elite WR (I capitalized SUPPOSED because Cooper is having a terrible season overall with 8 drops already including 2 TD drops on the same drive a couple weeks ago) and yet he got out jumped by a smaller DB for the INT. In fact, I actually thought Cooper made a weak effort to go get that ball or prevent the INT.
No defense for bad EJ in Buffalo, he just didn't get it done here, but his teammates let him down and lost that game for him Sunday. In fact, had Cook caught that TD its pretty likely the Raiders win that game on the comeback.
I cannot stand EJ as a player, and am so glad the Bills finally cut bait on him and his all too-frequent deer-in-the-headlights performances.
Having said that, I think this post is quite accurate.
And having said, I hate how EJ has the balls (or lack thereof) to float cute throws into tight windows, as catchable as they may be. It gets guys pulverized, which is why the Bills WRs basically revolted against him after he hung Goodwin out to dry vs Weddle & the Chargers here, and then Woods got demolished for a 1-yard gain in Houston shortly after Watt's ghastly pick-6.

There’s no loathing, just acceptance that Taylor’s not the long term answer to not only the Bills, but to any NFL team’s starting QB position. Taylor has entered into the “Fitzpatrick” zone. When you’re seen as a competent starting QB, but one who probably won’t ever be viewed as serious “franchise QB” option for any team.I think we all know it’s a matter of time before Peterman is starting because the team will eventually see starting Taylor as just spinning their wheels because they will know, due to his average QB play, that he’s not in their future plans to be the QB to take them to the playoffs and beyond.
I agree on the eventuality of playing Peterman this year. Sean is a new HC, and the move to Peterman is less likely to happen this soon with Tyrod being the incumbent starter, a captain, a veteran etc. But it might happen around the bye week. They simply have to find out what they have in him.
What makes me excited about Peterman as an NFL QB prospect, and what I never see from Tyrod, is the ball coming out quickly, on-time, on like a 3-count, to guys in space. Siemian also does this pretty well... "throwing guys open". Against the Ravens, Nate hit Clay quickly up the seam, and Clay was able to actually run to open space for awhile before falling forward for 4 more yards once tackled. By contrast, Tyrod's throws to Clay usually result in #85 being immediately hit from behind. Peterman also hit Zay on a quick slant that was negated by a penalty, but was nonetheless an example of what a QB needs to do to be able to move the sticks consistently in the NFL.
And WR chemistry schmemistry, I say! Zay and Matthews can/should be open all day on slants - they have the skills and hands to post up a defender if need be. But Tyrod has rarely, if ever, completed quick slants to anyone. He drops back, feels out the rush, looks, and either decides to tuck and run or he throws late to a wide open guy who is then swallowed whole by the converging defenders.
As Mike Singletary would probably say, "can't win with 'em!"

God knows that in my life of being a Bills fan, there's been a lot of heartache and pain. Sometimes I don't know if I can face it again.
But I've travelled so far, I don't think I can stop it now!

Another stinker vs. Denver, and don't be surprised if Peterman's representation commences with Operation 'Agent Provocateur' and works the Buffalo media to put pressure on McDermott to make a change!

It's Urgent that TieRod gets the offense to Rev on the Red Line. He's just not enough of a Headknocker out there. At least we're at the Cap, so we won't be a Long Long Way from Home. Hopefully Monday won't be another Blue Morning, Blue Day, and we won't again be saying about the game, That was Yesterday.
All I am saying is Nate Peterman could be this year's Dak Prescott if it's u-u-u-urgent enough to press him into duty.
He's a pretty clean cut guy, but if given a long, hard look, he might be just enough of a dirty white boy between the whistles to affect just how far up the 2018 draft board Mr. Beane needs to get to.
