  1. What if the league does not reach 99%?

Still, on a league-wide basis, the labor deal requires the NFL to spend 99 percent of the salary cap in cash in 2011 and 2012.

So what happens if too many teams spend so little that the league isn’t able to average 99 percent of the cap in actual cash spent? NFL general counsel Jeff Pash, via NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, explained Friday night that the league would be required to pay the difference to the players.

That said, the league doesn’t believe that it will be a problem, even if teams like the Bucs and Bengals and Chiefs decide to spend as little as possible over the next two years. Based on the money spent to date, the league thinks that the average expenditure of $119 million per team easily will be met.

Remember, it’s not cap space but cash spent. So when a team like the Panthers gives defensive end Charles Johnson a $30 million signing bonus on a six-year deal, only $5 million counts against the cap — but $30 million counts against the league’s total spending requirement of $3.8 billion.

  2. George Wilson's EVERYTHING is better than Whitner's. Better instincts, better hands, better height, better tackling, better playmaker, better leadership... better player, period.

Even if your assessment is correct you would have to think this coaching staff doesn't agree since Whitner started over Wilson all last season.

  3. It looks like the veteran minimum is around $800,000. Madieu williams just signed with the 49rs for just over the league min at $810,000. Donte should get the veteran min with incentives in tackles and int's. He might have a heart for Buffalo but I think Buffalo wants his A#$ out of town.

Sensabaugh signed yesterday 1 year $2.5M, seems a more likely comparable.

  4. Thanks! That answered other questions too. Some post made it seem like some teams could go over(ie 105%), if others were under. So would there be a possibility the league could tell the Bills they need to spend more, or tell the bottom 5 teams in spending they need to spend more so league wide they hit 99% mark?

No, if they don't hit the mark the league will pay the remaining % they are under to the players union. It won't go to one individual player from one individual team or anything like that.

  5. The only thing I can figure is this:

Coleman has been taking reps with the ones in practice, and Batten has been getting good reviews this year at camp after a good camp last year before his injury. Perhaps they feel both are better than Moats at OLB? Both were on IR when Moats got his shot outside, therefore getting the playing time due to their injuries. With everyone healthy they all move back to their original positions from last year.

Moving Moats inside gives Moats a better opportunity to make an impact, I'm guessing Torbor gets cut at some point, and Moats & Sheppard are the 2nd string ILBs and perhaps eventual replacements behind two aging veteran ILBs.
