  1. i was just hired to a civil service position and scored 110 on my test. 100 on exam and 10 points for disabled vet.

    to simply answer your questions,

any vet preference whether 5 for regular vets, or 10 for disabled vets, along with any 5 point claims for son/daughter of police/firefighters killed in line of duty must be made before the eligible list is established.

once that list is established no points can be added.

furthermore, your score does not guarantee you a job. they just have to hire 1 of the top 3 reachable scores.

so you can score a 100 and not be selected. happens all the time when someone who scores a 90 gets a job over people with 100's and 95's. usually the person that scored a 90 has an in with whatever dept it is

Thank you. This is what I believed to be the case but people keep trying to tell me I need to fight it. It sucks for me but seems to be fair.

  2. The upside of contracting out services is that 1) when you don't need them (i.e. in peace time) you don't need to pay for them, and 2) it theoretically allows a stronger force structure, since you're subbing out the support tasks and can therefore train a larger portion of your force as combat soldiers rather than REMFs. As a practical matter, of course, it doesn't necessarily work that way.

Another point: the cost structure of soldiers vs. contractors isn't limited to payroll. The Army (or whoever your fiancee enlisted with) incurs plenty of other costs (training, for example) keeping people on the rolls that they don't with contractors. The actual cost difference is probably more on the order of 1.5:1 rather than 4:1 - still inefficient, but not as much as you suggest.

I don't agree with subcontracting out war, though. All those "wartime" tasks that aren't performed at the same level in peacetime? That's what the National Guard is for. :D

And a four-day course on IEDs? I guess on the positive side, she won't be overconfident. (And it's a truism in the Army that they put you in a completely different job than what you trained for. I knew the officer in charge of mass graves registration in Iraq - in civilian life, he was a homocide prosecutor. Absolutely perfect for the job in Iraq. So after a month the Army moved him to immigration control ).

I agree with this for the most part but subcontracting out war does have it's perks.

-Contractors have the advantage of much looser ROEs. Some operations call for action the public doesn't like and for support purposes it's easier to let contractors take the fall.

-Contractors are better equipped to handle certain operations. They spend alot of time training for specific missions and their actual equipment is better for very specific missions.

-Contractors can get killed left and right, and it is hardly a blip on the minds of Americans.

I get the argument somewhat, but certainly hate the implication of the soldiers in Afghanistan being on vacation. An amusement park? What a horrible thing to say...especially coming from the source. I've mentioned on these boards before how my fiancee is about to deploy to Afghanistan in June for 12 months. Can't say I support the language announcing the decision--this reads like Sgt. Maj. Michael T. Hall is actively trying to make deployment more difficult. You can argue the intent behind the action until you are blue in the face--I'm only commenting on the language used in the announcement.

A sad fact is 20% of active military is on some kind of anti-depressant or mood stabilizing medication (including my fiancee). It seems to me having these tastes of home in the main bases in Afghanistan can do much in keeping our soldiers calm and relaxed. Simply being able to get a burger and catch a movie can recharge the batteries in dramatic ways. Hall claims they are unable to get supplies to combat outposts (I've heard many stories about outposts running out of food). Scares the hell out of me that we can put a man on the moon but not a dairy queen in Kandahar.

If getting rid of dairy queens and burger kings mean getting the grunts and combat personnel supplied better, then who the hell cares. From my experience the individuals who had all day to watch movies and eat whoppers never came close to being in harm's way. My unit went without running water and electricity for 6 months. Getting resupplied with ammo, water, and chow was awfully difficult sometimes.

.... pardon me if I don't feel bad for all the POGs who are missing out on chicken nuggets and vanilla shakes. Trust me a Sergeant Major isn't too concerned with that crap either.

  4. I took the Rochester City Fire Department civil service test in 2006. I scored a 93 and had that score bounced up to a 98 with veterans points. Within a year after the 2006 test I received a letter from the VA saying that they wanted me to come in and test my hearing. The test results showed I had damaged ear drums and that turned into a very small percentage of combat related disability. Which really means I get a very tiny check in the mail each month but more importantly I'm supposed to get an extra 10 points instead of 5 for civil service tests.

I contact the city and ask them if I can have my score raised. They don't respond to me, so I try again, and I get a no from one of the civil service employees. So I'm stuck at 98.

Fastfoward to 2009, I get contacted by the city in regards to the 2006 test. They want to start processing all the scores in my range. I go through the whole process, background checks, interviews, fingerprints, doctor examination, physical agility test, and more. I pass all of the stages and watch the group get smaller and smaller. I'm told to wait to be contacted about the possibility of getting hired.

I got a letter yesterday saying I wasn't chosen and a contact number if I had questions. I call the number and am told I was extremely close and that I missed out because I didn't score a 100 on the original test. I tell her the whole story about getting denied the extra points and she says that decision was the difference between me getting hired and not.

Many people have told me to hire an attorney and file a grievance with the city. This is completely not my style but friends and family are all over me about it. This is the career I have always wanted for myself. I became EMT certified just to help boost my stock. This letter really crushed me but the phone call was worse. Anybody have experience with this sort of thing? Or any advice? I plan to continue taking tests and trying but I'm 30 now and I feel like the window is closing. Does this situation merit looking into legally?

I'm not considering this out of spite, I can handle being told I need to improve in certain areas. Truthfully, I was told those two points made the difference of being hired or not and I feel I missed out on the extra 5.

  5. I said he did more with less, tebow was surrounded by top level talent on both sides of the ball, not so much for Lefevour, if you wanna talk about "willing his team to win" DL did alot of that with virtually no supporting cast.

Do you understand what "more with less" means? It implies his career surpassed Tebow's despite having less talent on his team. Lefevour had a nice career but he doesn't even approach TT's career, regardless of how you want stack up the talent level. Do you think the MAC is as competitive as the SEC?

  6. and his entire career-NCAA div 1 all time TD record holder, Dan Lefevour,

why is it so hard just to give the guy a little credit, he played great in his time there, set all sorts of records, and basically was a key element in putting that program on the map.

It's not hard to give the kid credit, he had a hell of a college career. I was just responding in agreement with the poster who said the senior bowl is useless. I also disagreed with the statement that he did more than Tim Tebow.

  7. led 2 td drives, almost 3, and did not turn the ball over, the 97 yds wasnt much to write home about, but he was the only QB, other than pike, who only led 1 scoring drive (a FG), that did not turn the ball over

Yes, he did well at the all-star game.

  8. so all those scouts and coaches go down there for no good reason, I dont think so, the game itself is probowl rules, so its not totally NFL level, but the correlation b/t guys that are invited, and then become elite level pros is there. And yeah, the little coaching they get from the pro coaches does mean something, but what do the experts know?

The experts know they are going to get a chance to meet and look at future NFL prospects. The scouts would show up if they were all playing dodgeball. Dan Lefevour's 5 of 10 performance in an all-star game is such a small sample of nothing and he was one of the top performers! He must of really blew them away with those 5 completions.

  9. aside from how they handle pro style coaching, taking snaps from under center, playing against top level competition, yeah its worthless.

BTW, did you know that over half of the probowl and all pro players from this past year played in the senior bowl, must be a terrible way to scout talent

Did you know that 100 percent of pro bowlers played in the pro-bowl? It's another meaningless game that they all attend but you can go scout it if you want.

By the way pro-style coaching consists of more than a half dozen plays and players that have never played together. Just like the NFL .

  10. People need to realise just how much of a joke the Senior Bowl (the actual game) really is. A QB gets 1 weeks with all new team mates, all new plays, and no tape to study. Then they go out there with about 7 plays in their arsenal and wing it. Think pick up basketball game at your local YMCA, only football. Saying a guy looked great in the Sr bowl is nothing.

Agreed. The Senior Bowl offers little/nothing in player evaluation. It's like the Knicks scouting a Globetrotters game.

  11. 2 quick points:

    - the buccs will pass on McCoy and suh at #3 by trading down only over Dominik and morris' dead bodies.

    - you've stumbled on a key TBD paradox: draft picks are absolute gold to the board until they are used to select a player. Then, subsequent player sucks.

I agree with both of these points. The three most ideal players for the Bills are Suh, McCoy, and Okung. Unfortunately all three will be long gone by 9 and a trade up would be costly.

  12. Billsfan=pain doesn't care about black people.

That's funny because just last week he said he was black. Then he went on to say that white people live in fear of black people taking over the country. He made it very clear that blacks are superior in sports, music, and politics. Tonights schtick has more racial undertones but seemingly in the opposite but no less ignorant direction.

My friendly advice to posters is to leave this troll alone. He is not going to be around much longer, at least under this current screen name.

  13. Pick a player to vote off the Bills Island for Rounds 1 and 2.

Only players possibly there at our pick are listed.

  14. Niece's sons. Couple of dumbasses.

That's exactly what I thought. Just wanted to be sure.

I got on the phone with that manager this morning, claimed to be a lawyer and bullied him. I told him that the boys would pay him damages equal to triple the cost of what they tried to lift, and if he wanted to claim any more damages he could file suit like the rest of the world has to. But there was no way in hell anyone was going to pay his overhead costs (he said the $2k was to cover his "extra" security costs related to the shoplifting :worthy:) or pay him protection money.

My niece can't afford an attorney (aforementioned wife's niece, who's basically indigent). I honestly suspect he's just trying to prey on an easy mark - I'd bet this isn't the first time he's tried this nonsense, and I bet it actually works sometimes.

And in case anyone's wondering, the boys are in for a world of **** for this. They're coming to live with me this summer; they WILL work their asses off for me for this - new roof on my workshop, new deck, landscape the back yard. Anyone in the DC area need any teenage slave labor this summer, drop me a line... :flirt:

Are you going to let the boys drive the Gran Torino?

  15. I couldn't care less about this, except to say I've never been a fan of Bullock. Just don't see the hype.. She's never impressed me with her acting -if fact Blind Side was so bad I quit watching a bootleg DVD less than half way through.

Now Grant/Hurley, THAT's still unbelieveable!

:worthy: I hate Sandy and think she is unwatchable. Yes she's nice looking but who gives a crap, nice looking girls are everywhere. It's strange that Hugh Grant is mentioned in the same thread as Sandy because he is the only other actor I consider unwatchable. :flirt:

  16. Manny does a good job with his footwork of keeping guys in front of him so he can attack straight on. But I think Mayweather really excels at lateral movement and can frustrate Manny some here.

I'm curious though, what makes you think Mayweather currenly has enough power? If he has a weakness currently I'd say it's lacks the big shot of a Manny

I agree with the footwork part and I am a real believer in Pacquiao's pressure. For these reasons, I would think Mayweather would have more fight on his hands than he likes. Mayweather doesn't have one punch KO power but when he is forced to mix it up a little, I think he has shown the ability to get the TKO. I'd say he has decent power but great combinations and angles. In his fights that have been decided by TKO, it's always the same story. Floyd is pressured into mixing it up or he feels no threat and goes in for the kill. It's the shot his opponent doesn't see coming that gets them and then comes the flurry.

Manny's power is the ultimate equalizer. A fighter like Manny always has a chance and he is going to be handful early. I wouldn't be suprised to see Mayweather lose the first couple of rounds and then settle in. Manny has been prone to knockdowns in his career and he has been knocked out a couple of times as well. Mayweather's not likely to knock him out but a TKO is possible.

I think we will have our answer fairly early. Can Mayweather take Manny's punch? If so he stays on his game and beats him with superior boxing. If not, then Manny is going to wear him down and Mayweather's feet are going to slow down.
