  1. I think Lovie is the type of coach who may be able to build a successful defense against the new england juggernaut. He has been in their division so he had no need but he built the Tampa 2 because of the division he was in when he was in Tampa with Dungy.

And the first thing any coach should do, imo, is beat new england! When Marv got here his first goal was just beat Miami. If you build your team to beat new england, you can complete with anyone in the league.

  2. Would that really surprise any of us at this point? FWIW, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News was on 'Mad Dog Radio' (Sirius-XM) on Friday and said that Ken Whisenhunt "was the leader in the clubhouse" for the Bills HC job. If it does turn out to be Whisenhunt, it'll be interesting to see how Brandon spins it. I mean, what are the odds of "leaving no stone unturned" and finding that the "right fit" was the very first person you interviewed? It makes the whole search process look like a sham, IMO.

Agreed, it seems like the Whiz doesn't fit either category "leaving no stone unturned" or "right fit". Also, he would be the 3rd former Pittsburgh assistant we will have hired... what is that about doing the same thing over and over again .... Oh well.

  3. Wow.

    Stealth.

We were all led to believe that the Lovie interview would take place on the weekend.

Or they made up their mind already and are just going through the motions for the fans. KC and Cleveland spent hours and hours with there candidates and we only spend a couple hours on each? seems like they could have gotten this done in a day if that silly bowl game wasn't an obstacle lol.

  4. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, he's ultimately responsible for picking the right OC for his players. While his teams are normally very good defensively, they have been painful to watch offensively, IMO.

Well actually he has to suggest to the organization that he wants to hire someone, the team actually hires them. Maybe that is a plus for the Bills ... perhaps they could help with the selection process differently then the Bears did?
  5. I'm so glad that Chip (rhymes with dip and that ain't hip) decided the Bills weren't good enough for him.

Believe it or not Lovie Smith is the very BEST HC that the Bills will have met with this weekend. As I've said many times, for the Bills to be successful they need to hire the HC who can bring the best HC/OC/DC/ST Coach combination to the table, NOT just a name HC. Lovie may be able to do just that. The added bonus that you could get with a veteran HC like Smith is that there is often a strong loyalty among the coaches and players that he has been assosicated with. that's something you're not gonna get with Chip (rhymes with Pipp, but he can't sing and surely can't dance).

    Check out this potential scenario:

HC - L. Smith (proven veteran NFL HC; sustained success with the Bears; strong defensive-minded coach who learned under T. Dungy)

OC - N. Turner (veteran former long time NFL HC and also a long time NFL OC and play caller) OR H. Jackson (creative, well qualified NFL assistant; served as Oakland interim HC recently)

DC - Smith will hire coach who knows the 4-3 Tampa 2 defense. (That will allow Bills can build upon their existing 4-3 scheme. Could they add B. Urlacher as their new starting MLB??)

ST Coach - B. April (available). Add D. Hester??

What other players/coaches from the Bears may be willing to shuffle off to Buffalo with Lovie??

I beleive that L. Smith is easily the best HC candidate the bills have shown interest in thus far. He has the wherewithal to bring a proven NFL coaching staff and may be able to steal a player or two from the Bears because veteran players often show loyalty to a former coach that they have enjoyed playing for.

    +1

I think the fact that he knows what the best fit for him is actually pretty important. He sought out the Bills over 5 other opportunities because he believes its the best place that he can succeed. That should give everyone the Fans, FO, and players something else to consider.

  6. Thank you, Rubes. I agree wholeheartedly. I basically said the same thing the other day and was attacked for it. I don't hate Lovie as the choice, nor would I be thrilled with him. He would be a safe choice...low risk/medium reward, IMO. What concerns me with him is his seeming inability to pick a decent OC and the fact that his teams have missed the playoffs five of the last six years. I think if you get so narrow-minded in your choice of only one candidate that you leave yourself open for heartache when it doesn't come to fruition. I'd love to see them get a young, innovative, "outside the box" thinker but, quite frankly, I don't care who it is at this point as long as the Bills get it right this time. This thirteen year drought has become unbearable and turned the fans of this team against one another.

I keep reading and hearing this but I don't see this being a problem. I don't think his choice of Mike Martz was a bad choice he was the architect of the "Greatest show on Turf" after all. It was more that Culter couldn't get along with Martz. So, I think that is more of an inditement of Culter than Smith.

  7. In the interview he claims to have LS fired Rivera but I believe Rivera's contract was just not renewed, he wasn't fired. Wouldn't know what was occurring during contract negotiations. And even with the supposed failings that Jonny Von mentioned LS still has a winning record.

  8. Wow, excellent news

Lovie Smith along with a top DC like Rod Marinelli. then bring in Norv Turner or Cam Cameron as OC. :worthy: 81-63 .563. Six years out of twelve with a winning record. It just doesn't get much better in people that actually WANT to work here.

Plus he was able to do all that with substandard QBs much of his tenure in Chicago. Just think what he could do with a really good QB ... if we get one.

  9. OK. So, this may be a stupid question but I am curious, since I read this all the time "He doesn't have the arm". Isn't there something a QB can do for that? And Its seems to me nearly anyone can heave a football 40 yards if they try. You may not get it where you want it but distance seems like it would be a problem for any professional athlete.

So isn't there some exercises to work on the "Arm". I seem to remember that Trick QB that we brought it for training camp was good at placing the ball anywhere he wanted. I doubt that was something he was born with how does one practice that(putting the ball where you need to)? And shouldn't Lee be helping with all this?

  10. I agree but for the all the great things Polian did, he did build a team that went 2-14 without one player. That's pretty bad. IF the Bills tank it this year and luck out with Matt Barkley, does that suddenly make the GM who picks him a great GM? Franchise QBs makes great GMs and coaches. This is what makes Gailey such a good offensive coach. He does more with less at the QB position than jsut about anyone. I'd love for him to get to coach 1st round talent someday.

Isn't that what Vince Young is? B-)

    12-4 not bad!

  12. From what I have heard him say several times I think they are taking the BPA. If you listen to the interview and to his statements for the presser he stated "We believe there are 10 top players in this draft and if one comes off the board we will go to our next guy on our board". I think the rank the BPA for 1-to "their draft position" and go from there. Now if there is a position they don't need they may leave that off but their board but there are only 2 positions I think they are really set at and that is DE and RB, maybe DT.

    Thoughts?

  13. Peyton Manning is injured for a year and the colts change from a 12 win team to a 1 win team.

The Patriots would be bad without Tom Brady.

Drew Brees went to the Saints and turned them into a title contender.

Ben Roethlisberger got drafted by the Steelers and won 2 superbowls. (defense was good before he was there)

Eli Manning did the same with the Giants. (strahan was there before him)

Those are just a few recent examples..

Brady missed the 2008 season and the Pats went 11-5 as well as losing the division to a team not emphasizing the quarterback position by going with the Wildcat.

  14. Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone on this board would be VERY willing to patiently wait (approximately) three years (SJ), two years (KW), four years (FJ), and five years (GW) for any kind of serious production from our draft picks.

I think it is more due to perception than the player's actual ability. Many coaches don't like putting a "Un-drafted" or late rounder guy in when they have a 1st - 4th rounder in that position. Those players sit on the practice squad and rarely get the opportunity to even participate. Even after FJ proved himself he was still sitting behind Lynch. And Wilson had to wait of Donte to get traded. That is the real farce of it all. You may have great talent in later rounds but they may never get the opportunity because of their draft position not because they need that time to "Develop".

  15. I agree with the OP but I also see some issues that seem to get over looked when evaluating Nix too.

The change to the 3-4 was short sighted from Nix and Gailey. That is one area they didn't need to change on the team they inherited. I think what a lot of people forget is that Jauron's teams defenses were actually really good .... at least for up to 3/4 of a game. The problem was that offense could rarely move the ball and the defense was worn out by the end of the game. Had they retained Fewell and just fixed the offense I think we would have seen that swift change we see with other teams.

Also, while I like CJ I think at the time it was the wrong pick. That said the handling of the Lynch and Edwards can be seen as good moves, although I think trading Edwards may have been a better option than cutting him directly(but perhaps there was not interest).

IIRC Nix was here a season before he became GM so he should have know the talent of the team and can be given credit of some of them on the roster that have been kept. Also, his first draft was performed under the guidance of the old scouting dept so he deserves so leeway there.
