Burrow is the most sacked QB in the NFL and was sacked nine times against Tennessee.

Real good job analyzing defenses pre-snap.

They won against the Titans mainly because of their Defense.  All the praise for Burrow as the first QB to win an NFL game being sacked 9 times is comical.  That's not something he should be proud of.  That's something that should be cause for him buying his whole D (and his kicker) gifts for.

This, just bizarre stuff that honestly should be a negative for him but the media has an agenda and that is to pump him up as much as possible.  Dude was on his back the whole game..

I finally did the Apple TV free trial just to start watching Ted Lasso. Loving it!

I'm actually thinking about keeping Apple TV for a month just to try the other originals like Schmigadoon, Foundation, and Lisey's Story.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Apple Originals?

For All Mankind (alternate reality of moon landing and what ifs) and Mythic Quest (comedy with Mac from It's always Sunny) are really good.  Foundation looks great but I haven't seen yet..

  3. We don't have the O-line to stay 5 wides and throw 60 times..  Amazing that the coaches don't know this.  Dabol has to help Allen with some scripted throws when he is off and feeling pressure.  He did him no favors with the play calling.  Get him on the move rolling out a few times too.  Allen is great with those plays.

  4. We need less of the 5 wide stuff vs good teams.. It's proven time and time again not to work.  If Allen is on fire and feeling it, go for it but it just seems like we put a lot of pressure on Allen to make it happen with that set..

How about keeping a back in the backfield to use as an outlook or running more plays designed for Knox and create mis-matches..

This is literally the first time i've even heard anyone mention Brown in the same breath as Diggs.... not sure what your aim is here. do you honestly believe that ranking is justified?

thats a really weak hill to die on.

I mean it's not as bad as their ranking for Allen.  AJ Brown is a great WR, he's a better YAC and contested ball WR than Diggs.  Diggs is more consistent and is more crafty getting open.  Brown is a freak of nature athlete..  He doesn't get a ton of looks in that offense though for some reason.

For years the Bills have treated the draft like a hole-filling exercise and it has never worked out.  Ever.  The strategy this year was simple: BPA at premium positions.  You seem to be complaining that they didn't reach for a lower-level cornerback or center instead of a higher-rated pass rusher or tackle prospect.  That kind of approach is what has demonstratively failed for this franchise for decades.  If the worst thing that comes out of the last two drafts is that they end up with too many good young d-line prospects in a couple of years, that would be an amazing problem to have.

This is exactly right, we can draft a center in round 3 next year in a better draft... And draft corner higher if needed.  They are probably bringing in another vet at CB this year anyways.  You know what helps DBs the most?  A great pass rush...

No one can cover Tyrek Hill or Kelce, you have to get to Mahomes and throw off his timing, etc.

    Nice Post.

I believe the biggest issue people have with Edmunds and Oliver’s play is related to the style of defense.

The Bills play a very passive more traditional Tampa Cover 2 with a MLB they use in a specific deep cover roll.  Therefore - Edmunds first and primary responsibility is to get deep enough to prevent easy throws to the deep middle.  He then plays from back to front to move forward and make tackles on shorter middle routes and then running plays.  This design makes it fairly easy to attack short to mid range and also allows DL men to get off double teams and get a hold of him because he is not attacking run first.  Traditional old school LBs - attack run first in responsibility and therefore are in completely different positions relative to the LOS and the DL.

The Bills also seem to give their DL more responsibility- rather than just attack.  Jordan Phillips was a guy that played out of scheme and attacked and it got him sacks (great), but left holes that got exploited by teams (bad) to the tune that they were not aggressive in trying to re-sign him.  I think Oliver is doing more what they want, but it is a more passive role and ends up stifling his greatest attribute of quickness.

I would love to see how this team would change given a change in philosophy to more attacking and more pressure, but to be fair - their passive style did lead to the #2 and #3 defenses and they were for those 2 years a top passing defense and were tops against TEs.  Last year was more of an outlier without Star and with Harrison recovering and then both Milano and Edmunds getting injured in game 1.  They had to really adjust the team and I don’t think they found a rhythm until the second half - where they became a top defense again.

The biggest issue with being a passive defense is that good to great QBs and OCs know how to attack you and it takes a near perfect game to be successful.  A super aggressive defense can sometimes overwhelm a spot and be disruptive for large stretches - see Buffalo versus NE during the Rex years - but a good to great QB can also adjust to that.

We need that change and they got that the 2 prior years - where suddenly they would slide into an amoeba front and bring pressure, whil still dropping 7-8 into coverage.  They had less practice time, different players (no Zo that was great at that), and injuries at the second level.  I think these caused them to be more passive and make a guy like Edmunds even less likely to make those impact plays (TFLs, sacks, etc.).

Our passiveness on defense really shows vs good teams with balanced offenses.  It just doesn't work well against them.  I hope we try to dictate more on D this year or we have a hard cap that will get exposed (has been) vs the upper tier teams.

That is always an interesting take, but he comes from a football family and has been immersed in the sport.

If memory serves he makes some of the defensive calls on the field. So game IQ may not be an issue.

I could get behind the "raw" project Allen with his multi-sport background and limited focus on football, QB camps, etc... If anything Allen has progressed faster than I imagined.

Right or wrong, I had more expectations of Edmunds after his first 2 seasons where it looked like he was building on something, but he has been regressing..

"...you're either growing or you're dying. There ain't no third direction."

    - Tommy Boy

It is in all of our interest as Bills fans that he turn his play around this season. We are going to need more impact plays (passes defended, sacks on blitzes, TFLs, FF, ...) from that position.

Thank you, that is where a MLB earns his money... There are a lot of Edmunds truthers on this board... He's been average to below.  He should be a great cover backer but he isn't, his size and speed should allow him into the backfield for negative plays all the time but it doesn't...
