  1. . By the time Hardy has any real progression for this team he will be labeled a bust due to this injury and his raw talent that will not have any time to develop in the next year.

I don't get this thread. You are saying give up on him now, since he'll be coming in late next year. Hardy will be fine, he's just comin along a little slow. also, it wasn't like there were a ton of opportunies for Bill's receivers....they were 24th in offense this year.

It's a good thing fans don't make the roster moves. The Bills wouldn't have a solid roster for longer than 1 game.

  2. He has apparently wore out his welcome there. (READ BELOW) but I think if we can trade for him, we do it. I don't think his "character" issues would be a problem. He plays tremendously hard, has great hands, and he is EXACTLY what we need at TE. Young, proven, and good. If we could trade for him, sign Birk, and sign Tank Johnson/DT/DE. And then draft a DE, OLB, and C. We could be a VERY good team next year.

I know that the Browns will also trade tight end Kellen Winslow this off-season and that he has not been a part of any discussions with coaching candidates.

Thats a lotta "ifs." What the Bills will actually do is bring Winslow in for a teaser (announced on BB.com), then sign this year's Robert Royal FA from some other team. They may sign one "big" FA this year. Last year was Stroud.

  3. I thought teams took advantage of Denny. He seemed to overpursue, or slant down hard too often....causing him to get burned on misdirection plays. I also remember the scheme having him drop into coverage ona running back for some reason...which was another matchup advantage for the opposing team.

  4. Assuming he couldn't do anything with the coaches:

    Free Agency:

Angelo Crowell - Why? Because he is a known quantity, he's a great tackler, he has a nose for the football, he knows our players and our scheme, and he will come cheaper than most linebackers in free agency. He tends to have contain issues at times, but this is a HUGE upgrade over ellison.

Oshiomogho Atogwe – Great free agent grab here fortifies our secondary alongside Whitner.

    Trades:

Jason Peters and Roscoe Parrish to Lions for #20 pick, 3rd round pick, and Jon Kitna - I know this is getting old talking about this, but don't let it get old. Peters sabotaged the team last season by holding out, has a terrible attitude ("Getting to Hawaii is why we play the game"), and he can get us a great trade in return. We move Walker to LT and Chambers to right tackle. Plus we have Demetrius Bell who showed great promise last season. Parrish hasn't been utilized enough here to merit his contract. Kitna could be an excellent backup for Trent going forward, and could step in and play well if Trent went down.

Sign and trade Jabari Greer to Browns for Martin Rucker and 3rd round pick – I know Greer showed lots of promise for us last season, but TE is one of our biggest needs. McKelvin can step in now in his spot, and Corner and Youboty will be there as well. Rucker was injured early last season, but has a ton of upside. He is the one dimensional pass catching TE we need with Fine being our solid all around guy.

    Draft:

Round 1 (1st pick) – Jeremy Maclin WR - I know some won't like this pick, but this guy would be a real threat opposite Lee Evans. This guy is loaded with talent, AND could return punts in place of Roscoe.

Round 1 (2nd pick) – Everette Brown/Greg Hardy/Tyson Jackson (Best DE available) - Develop our DE of the future and get him in the rotation to make a difference right away.

    Round 2 - Alex Mack/Max Unger/Jonathan Luigs (Best C available) - Center will fortify this o-line.

Round 3 (1st pick) – Alex Magee DT - More help in the rotation for Williams, Stroud, and Johnson.

Round 3 (2nd pick) – Trevor Canfield/Craig Urbik (Best OG available) - depth at OG that we need.

Round 4 – Chase Daniel QB - late value pick and potential future QB should anything happen to Trent.

Round 5 – Brannan Southerland FB - we've needed help here for a long time.

    2009 Starting Lineup

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a winning team.

Nice. I think this thread can be coined What Would Polian Do (WWPD)? My only criticism is I don't think Polian would be satisfied with our tackle situation with the loss of Peters. He would somehow buildup the depth on the line...

  5. The Bills have enough glaring needs on the roster. Lock Peters up and focus on the other stuff. Peters can be solid at that position for years to come. It would be nice to actually have some stability there, not worry about it for anohter 5-8 years, keep working on solidifying their defensive front, getting some playmakers, and improving overall

  6. I'm watching the Ravens vs Miam game and I noticed one thing:

Their stadium isn't even close to loud. The ravens are only up by 10 and you can't even hear the Miami fans. It also looks like the middle tier sections are mostly empty.

This is more reason why it sucks that the Bills haven't made it to the playoffs on such a long time. The Ralph would be rocking...

  7. From my point of view, what are the Bill's real options for coaching?

There will be a lot of coaching talent this year and next. Unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that the Bills will not spend the necessary money to go and get any of it. Anybody who thinks we're going to spend big money on the likes of Cowher, or Holgrem is seriously kidding themselves....and I doubt anyone is going to come to Buffalo for the great weather or income taxbreak.

The same holds true for talent on the team. Many times I think the Bills draft to not necessarily fortify their team, but manage the leverage they have with restricted FA's, and also players that will hit free agency in the near future....basically just enough to keep them in a good financial situation.

For me, I'm sorry, but I feel like the Bills need to earn my fanship back. I feel like I've held on to "hope" for too long. It would be a different story if they were making significant moves, but things just were not working out....BUT, instead, they do just enough to keep us hanging on.

  8. As much as I dislike Dick Jauron, this just goes to show that any play, regardless of the call, is good if it works or bad if it doesn't.

you also have to understand your personnel. In this case, we are are comparing an MVP versus a turnover prone backup...you don't put your turnover prone backup in that position.

  9. 1B. John McCargo. DT North Caroline State (26th overall) McCargo injured his foot after a handful of games in 2006 and was IR'd. Returned in 07, though did not start any games, and went on to collect 2.5 sacks and make a few good plays. Began 2008 as a backup DT and had little impact. IR'd late in the season.

Bills traded a 2nd and 3rd to Chicago for the chance to move up and get him. Those picks were sorely needed as the Bills rebuilt after TD's era. Early in 2008, DL Coach Bill Kollar questioned his work ethic, and McCargo was again relegated to backup status. Bills attempted to trade the underachieving DT, but McCargo did not pass a physical. Thereafter, he was IR'd again in 2008. He will not return in 2009, and should be considered a bust.

    Grade: F

Totally Agree...not only does the lack of production contribute to this grade, but the fact that the Bills gave up 2nd and 3rd rounders is amazing. F is about right.

  10. Who you gonna replace him with? Its not like the Bills have been drafting plenty of depth for the O-line for the last couple of years.

Also, if he's so overrated, who voted him to the Pro-Bowl?

I've been a Jason Peters advocate simply because I think its the best option for the Bills. I'm not one to ignore facts, so we'll see where this years negotiation goes.

  11. The Bills organization also gets money from revenue sharing, and the NFL for TV advertising rights. Also, the Bills could sell naming rights....all of this does not require a raise in ticket prices

The biggest problem is outside of WNY, not many people care about the Bills because they sell a poor product.

Take me for example, I'm from the south, but I became a fan in the early 90's. They were on TV all the time, and were fun to watch. Not anymore. I pay for the NFL Sunday ticket, buy merchandise, and make a couple of trips to the game every now and then.

The ONLY thing keeping them alive is the fact that Western New Yorkers are dedicated people, willing to keep showing up to the games despite the relative price of the tickets.

  12. This is not a "let's slam Trent edwards thread." Rather it is a legitimate set of questions that seeking a collective response.

Is Trent Edwards a QB that can carry this team?

Is the system one that he can be successful in?

Does he have a surrounding cast that will allow him to be successful?

    Here are my thoughts:

Trent is not good enough to carry an NFL team on his back (Think Peyton Manning). I believe at best Trent can evolve into a Chad Pennington type player. He is capable of playing smart mistake free foootball but he cannot will a victory and he can not carry a team. He must be supported by a strong run game and the coaches need to play him in a system that favors his ability to quickly read the defense and play mid to short passing routes. He is capable of not losing a game but he is not a "I will win the game" QB.

The results suggest the Bills system is a joke. After teams took away the dump off routes the offense folded. The lack of play action passes ws glaring. The predictability in play calling returned. Overall the system fails to impress anyone that plays against it, watches it or cares in any way

The o-line needs upgrades at center, RT and LG. Among this list an upgrade at center is key. The TE situation is a joke. Schouman and Fine are good reserve players. They are not NFL starters. I know this opinion will not be popular but sorry Lee Evans is not a #1 receiver. He is a superb #2 and Reed belongs in the slot. Please never put Roscoe Parrish back on the field as an NFL wide receiver again. Look at his stats and try to tell me otherwise (please no more .. he could be Wes Welker .. he is not and never will be). Back to Lee Evans. He is a very, very good receiver but he can not make a defense have to play to his abilities. Eric Moulds in his prime was a far better receiver. Lee has speed that can't be ignored but he does not have game presence. He would be a killer opposite a true #1. Good news is that the two heaed monster of Lynch and Jackson is as solid as they come.

My thoughts ... what are yours?

I think Trent has the tools, but even the best QBs cannot carry a team without decent protection and a handful of weapons.

As you mentioned, the Bills need to upgrade their line. I wold also add center to that list...the 3-4 defenses we play typically take advantage of Preston.

Lee Evans is a top flight, #1 kinda guy...defenses take him away and we supposedly try to take advantage of the other opportunities. The problem is this: he's on of the few playmakers and he needs to get the ball no matter what. Take for example, Steve Smith. Teams double him all the time...BUT, the Panthers make it a point to get him the ball. They do reverses, short screens, move him around, and even throw into the double coverage. Opposing teams are more that willing to committ additional resources to one of the few playmakers the Bills respond by going away from Evans.

  13. VOR, you've ignored a few things, because you're too busy finding excuses for Miami.

    Other moves Parcells made:

    1. Hiring Tony Sparano. He outcoached DJ on two occasions, although he's in his first season and DJ was in his eighth full.

    2. Improving the OL: Parcells signed G Justin Smiley, drafted Jake Long, (which moved Vernon Carey to RT) drafted G Donald Thomas, and already had C Samson Satele.

    3. Changed the defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4, which had the effect of making supposed over the hill LB Joey Porter a sack machine again. That move allowed Matt Roth to play a simlar role.

    4. Trading for Anthony Fasano, and re-signing both Greg Camarillo and Ricky Williams. All three played an important role in that offense, by giving the offense options.

    5. Hiring Pasqualoni and Henning as experienced coordinators to make the transition for Sparano. Those guys aren't the highest caliber coordinators, but they devised schemes (The Wildcat) to make that team maximize their talent.

Parcells very presence made everyone realize they were not going to be babied. BP made a point of letting people know if

they slacked off they were gone. It's one of the reasons Ernest Wilford didn't play much.

Sure, Pennington was a reason for success. But, he wasn't worth 10 wins all by himself.

The Miami Dolphins have less talent than the Buffalo Bills, but they had good coaching and didn't turn the ball over. Both teams had low penalties, but it was Miami that had clear leadership.

EDIT: Miami has a better front office, better coaching, and better overall leadership. They also happen to have a bettter owner.

Let's compare that to the moves made by the Bills:

    1. Let their top end LT hold out...probably cheaper to pay a 1 time pro bowler vs a 2 timer

    2. Sign Kavika Mitchell, Marcus Stroud, and Spencer "hasn't done anything for me lately" Johnson

    3. Put a rookie offensive coordinator at the helm

    4. Stood pat on a second yr QB, without a full season under his belt

    5. Drafted another DB with top pick for a team with minimal pass rush

    6. Gave DJ an extension after 5 games into the season

    7. Kept one of the worst QBs ever, in a key backup role for said second yr player

  14. I'm sure having Pennington fall into their laps was part of the grand scheme as well. Not to mention Brady suffering a season-ending injury. And the Jets fading down the stretch.

goes to show you the division was there for the taking....the Bills had their chances as well....difference is, we didn't do anything with it.

  15. After thorough consideration, I agree that Jauron is not the top end coach many Bills fans would like to have. But, I think that the organization has a more pressing need: a top end GM.

Think about it. Just like the Raiders, the Bills have made some headscratching calls the past nine years when it comes to the draft and free agency. They reach for players like McCargo, Losman, and sad to say, but Whitner (good player, but picked too high). They overpay for average talent like Walker, Dockery, Reed, and Kelsey. And then they don't shell out the money to the right at the high value positions for the likes of Pat Williams, Jason Peters, and a decent backup QB. Also, don't expect to see Fred Jackson unless he comes in well below market value to stay with the team.

Lastly, a top end GM will demand performance from the staff and players. Who are the players accountable to now? Brandon? Their good friend Jauron? The fans? The frugile 90yr-old Mr Wilson? We really don't know, and I'm not sure the players and staff know either?

More than anything, I think the Bills really need a GM. The "inner circle" aint cutting it. Fix this, and you stand a lot better chance of fixing the Bills.

  16. I agree, not renewing season tickets is a fair form of protest....

Excitement, hope, and actual performance/entertainment will bring those sales back. The onus SHOULD be on an organization to provide those things. Right now, we don't get those things, and the fans don't OWE it to an organization worth $800 million to keep drinking the kool aid and spending their hard earned money.

Empty seats, and low merchandise sales should send a message. Conversely, if the Bills do well and make it to the playoffs, I'm sure profitability should rise...

  17. I'm not a hater, but not a Jauron fan either....hopefully Jauron makes something of this coming year.

My big thing is they need to learn from their mistakes. You always hear the players saying it, but many of the repeated mistakes were made by the coaching staff: poor clock management, poor adjustments (McGee getting burned at Miami, DE's covering RBs on routes, etc...).

I really do hope the continuity makes up for the lackluster coaching....because no matter how you couch it, the coaching was lackluster. I think some a lot of it can be attributed to Schonert being a rookie OC....but I think Jauron is simply an average to below average coach.

All in all, I personnally would rather keep Jauron at least another year, instead of blowing up the staff...additionally, the Bills have bigger problems.....like getting a GM on staff.

  18. Earlier you stated he is gone and now u say likely to be gone. Anyone can say DJ is LIKELY to be gone after this performance. Just like its likely to snow in buffalo

Give skooby a break....he did caveat his thread calling it a rumor.

as for the rumor itself, it sounds about right to me. Usually thats how these things go. You want to make a change with the staff, you usually force the HC into something he doesn't want to do...like firing his coordinators. This way, the coach quits instead of sitting back and waiting to be fired. That way, you don't have to pay his salary.
