i don't recall Tom ever discussing what constraints he was under. in fact, Mr. Wilson made is sound as if Tom acted without restraint to the point he didn't keep the owner in the loop on certain developments.
it's a he-said, she-said argument.
the fact that Tom was paid handsomely also undercuts the argument that Mr. Wilson won't pay executives top dollar.
and there is also a belief that Tom Donahoe had the opportunity and approval to spend more on a coach during both searches and failed to do so.

all this complaining about that idiot ralph would go away if he ran the team better
-
Fitzpatrick.
fitz qb'ed his team to the worst offense in the nfl last year, darn those pesky numbers
-
I agreed with your post below and fully agree with this one. I asked this simple question to which no one answered. If you know your fan base will sell out the stadium regardless of the crap team you put on the field, what motivation do you have to actually spend money to improve it? None. Western New Yorkers are scared of the team moving. I keep hearing 'I would rather have a crappy team than not have one at all' Well, Ralph knows that.
12th in operating profit last year at something like 39.5 million, but we can't hire a good GM or Coaching staff? Nothing changes till Ralph is no longer owner. Meaning....this team will NOT get better till he is no longer owner.
and now that he's weasaled his way into the HOF, there's even less motivation
-
Not lying, I'm glad you don't own a football team. You enjoy midget wr's who can't get open in the endzone, but practice hard all week?
and throw in schoebel and kelsay, they suck
-
If you really believe what you just wrote, you're clinically insane. Not lying.
trade evans, roscoe, and reed. he's a great football player
-
who's cowert? and what's he ever done?
get your facts straight and your spelling right. and we realize you have some kind of a hate-on in regards to Mr. Wilson which seems to be blinding you of all perspective. come back with another song when you get a chance, because this is getting absolutely dull.
jw
well, you keep defending one of the worst owners in the league with no evidence to back it up.

Plus, while Donahoe is no longer employed at One Bills Drive, Tom Modrak and John Guy (along with quite a few of his other hires) are still heavily involved in the football side of the business. In particular, everyone listed under "pro personnel" in the media guide was hired between 2001-2003.
Which is why he told Russ Brandon to go out and spend $6+ million on a 35-year-old WR?
he would have been better off spending 6 million a year on Bill Cowhert, but bill wouldn't suck up to him the way juaron does
-
things move in cycles, and this, notably, has been a long one, and this era still has ties to the Tom Donahoe era because his dismissal has led to the creation of this current regime.
my guess -- and strictly a guess -- is a reassessment will come at the end of this season depending how the Bills do.
jw
Ralph reassessed his things at the end of last season, he determined his pocketbook was all that mattered
-
Home teams take 55% of ticket sales and opposing teams take the other 45%. Naming rights to the stadium and suites all go to the home team. That's why other owners would like to see the Bills moved and there is such an emphasis on suite sales.
you're grasp of the obvious is impressive. the bills are profitable (which is good), and could easily field a winning team if ralph wasn't such a meddling idiot
-
If Ralph Wilson is an Idiot, I'd like to be one also... He does own a team worth how many hundred millions?
Jauron was hired by his old friend and best head coach ever in Buffalo Bills history, Marv Levy. I'm certain he gave Jauron the extra time this season to show he can win because of Levy, JMO.
If he falls on his face for a fourth season I just don't see RW keeping him, in fact It seems like a TBD consensus that should Jauron not win any games against the Dolphins-Jets-Patriots in the first half of this season, Jauron & Schonert will both be gone.
being rich doesn't make you a genius, look at bernie madoff
-
He does not get money from the suites in those stadiums or from the extra marketing money those teams rake in.
duh, he gets money from the higher priced tickets though. the bottom line is that ralph makes plenty of money owning the bills, and that's fine. just tell him to quit being such a moron when it comes to managing the team
-
Prove it. Can't? Then STFU.
PTR
prove what, that ralph's an idiot when it comes to actually running a football team, he pretty much takes care of that himself

6-10 is the prediction from Mike and Mike, and I honestly think that is pretty accurate. We as Buffalo fans have to really look back into our history. We were AFL champions in the early years, I'm not sure if that is because Buffalo was a top ten city or not. It seems with the decline of the city in the 70's (which the team stunk) the Bills have been below average. The late 80's and 90's were just lady luck, a perfect storm with a great GM, head coach and no free agency.(those were the days) We were able to breed and keep our best players and they did not leave. Today Buffalo and WNY is struggling to stay afloat. I think the Bills are just taking after the city in which it resides. For all you fans who dislike Ralph, he is correct. We cannot compete in today’s NFL. We are getting passed by and we are not just going to become a ghost town a few years, unless an owner loves the Bills and is willing to make peanuts in revenue, the Bills are good as gone. So appreciate the losing while it last because it seems that 7-9 and 6-10 will be all we will see for a while. Hopefully Ralph's last ditch effort to insert Tortonto's economy into the bloodlines of the franchise will keep the Bills in WNY.
that's a bunch of bologna, Ralph gets 125 million a year from the tv money alone. he than gets to keep all the money from his free stadium which is sold out more often than not. you say the ticket prices are low, but he also gets revenue sharing when he plays on the road in the more expensive markets. so this deal where ralph can't compete because of money is wrong. the bills have become uncompetitive because ralph is an idiot

Our players simply don't fit this. In your lineup, our NT wouldn't be big enough, one DE would have no experience at his new position and totally different responsibilities, the other DE would be about 60 pounds too small to play the position. And switching Maybin to LB would be a gamble at best, he's never played there and switching from DE to LB is hard (see Vernon Gholston if you doubt this).
If we do make that switch, it will require two to three years and will end with us jettisoning virtually all our present defenders.
let me know what you think after the patriots score 40 points
-
Ruben Brown was another one. Unloved when he was here, but has never ever been satisfactorily replaced.
they both looked great last night, but we can't complain, after all we've got Kelsay and that turd sandwich Schoebel

Maybe as a kid I just didn't know any better but when were we going through our "2-14" seasons even then I always thought there was hope but this is the 1st time in watching the Bills for over 25 years that I truely feel completely uninspired. Last seasons strong start then going 2-8 had to have been the most frustrating I've felt as a Bills fan EVER. Now, with basically no changes from the GM right down to the assist coaches is the 1st time in years that I think Buffalo has absolutely no chance.
Even when I would hear the uneducated NFL fan say "The Bills Suck" I would always be able to throw out some players names and explain to them how we have a chance. Whether it was my blind lotalty to Joe Ferguson back in the day or joe Cibbs, thurman Thomas, Kelly, whoever. Now I really can't thik of anyone that even has a slight chance of bailing us out this year. And to think that our best player is probably Owens a.k.a."The rooster" just adds on to the frustration of another futlie Bills season.
after going through the pain of those late 70's teams, and late 80's teams, that it's amazing that Ralph seems to letting it happen again, and maybe he knows alot about football, but he's a terrible football team manager. he never did figure that out.
-
right, probably paid him right out of his own pocket, too.
jw
if it were up to wilson, he would have kept hank bullough or kay stephenson
-
and Mr. Wilson eventually hired Marv Levy, but you notably omit that from any post ... and what is this mystical place you speak of in regards to Seattlele. is that near Poratalande, perhaps?
jw
and why do you call him mr.wilson, it makes you sound stupid

polian hired marv levy

You're totally off on this one......Cousineau went to Montreal and then Knox turned the Bills into a powerhouse in 1980 (my favorite sports team ever). Knox didn't leave till after the 82 season, and then went to Seattle. I think they did win the division in '83 there. I know they won their first playoff game ever.
But, obviously Cousineau leaving had nothing to do with Knox leaving.
not signing Cousineau infuriated Knox, but when Ralph let Kelly go to the Houston Gamblers, he walked, saying that buffalo was a "coaches graveyard", and ralph wouldn't have to spend any more money to have a good team, he just needs to stop being an idiot

BillsVet, There is nothing mysterious about Littman. Don't make him out to be a boogeyman. He is acting on the orders of the owner and serving the interest of the owner. When the battles between Littman and Polian became too belligerant the owner sided with the finance man and jettisoned Polian. That was an easy decision for the owner to make: more money over competitiveness.
Even when Butler and A. J. Smith tookover the reigns from Polian the constant battles with Wilson's and Littman over money issues resulted in the inevitable: their departure and the continuation of the organizational structure which stressed financial perspectives over football perspectives.
Fans of the team get frustrated that the owner has not relied on top shelf football people to guide his miserable team. They are perplexed over the issue, especially when they see the Falcons and the Dolphins quickly turn things around when their respective owners installed quality football executives to run their franchises. There should be no surprise by anyone who has followed the half century ownership of HIS team. He maintains this backward management style simply because it has proved lucrative for him. It is as simple as that.
the thing that cracks me up is how many people on this board suck up to that weasal ralph
-
Very well put. The issue all along has been an atmosphere which is not conducive to making football decisions. 32 teams in the league have priority 1A of making a profit. 1B is being competitive. The difference remains that some teams differentiate from 1A to 1B must more than others.
Lurking in the background is the mysterious Littman. He's the type of guy who oversees RW's finances, but his presence is as open as RW's was in retaining DJ. Continuity is nice when you've got the right people and extenuating circumstances prevent winning. It's clear by this point that Brandon and Jauron aren't good enough. But the owner and CFO will remain no matter what.
since the bills receive 125 MILLION a a year from tv alone (which is more than the player payroll), all ralph has to do is sell some tickets in his FREE stadium to make a buck
-
You can only do what the defense gives you.
it's tough to score in the nfl
-
Better worry more about your own credibility, the way you contradict yourself, you're your own worse enemy.
In 37 starts Cutler has won 17 games playing for a much better head coach in my opinion. TE and JC have almost identical QB ratings.
I think its safe to say both QB's are for the most part unproven at this point.
using that logic, we could have gotten two 1sts and a 3rd for Edwards. we should have shopped him over the winter
