Why not Orakpo?

Recommended Posts

Five of Maybin's 12 sacks were against Coastal Carolina, Temple, and Syracuse and you REALLY want to diss Orakpo's stats and competition ?????????????????????????????

I don't diss his stats at all. I don't pay attention to them, either, since they're ability to translate to NFL situations is essentiall nil. My position isn't based on quality of opponent, but physical makeup and potential to play the NFL game.

IMO, Orakpo's not going to overpower NFL O-linemen, unless he plays a stand-up OLB and blitzes, in which case he may catch an OT out of position. I'm not totally sold on Maybin, but you can't teach speed/fast twitch and the kid appears to have both qualities.

Six of Orakpo's sacks were against Rice, Arkansas, and UTEP. Is that supposed to be impressive?

I know that its old news... but i cant for the life of me understand why the bills FO signed maybin when orakpo was still available..orakpo, as far as ive seen, is a proven and established pass rusher.. he's a beast...and knowing that he was on top of everyones list as the top pass rusher, why did the bills go with the next best..this is similar to last years decision to go with mckelvin instead of rodgers-cromartie..maybe im missing something..shed some light on this for me my friends

because the blls obviously liked maybin more! if you noticed wash is using orapko as a 3/4 LB he was not a fit for the bills in thier opinion.

The draft really made me upset! I study the draft several months in advance, buy all the draft magazines, look at all the mock drafts online, and prepare as if I had some input...lol....Just an obsessed fan I guess? Anyways, I was also upset when they passed on Orakapo. I also was certain they would go for Everette Brown DE at some point seeing that they had 3 opportunites to get him! They could have drafted Everette Brown and Brian Orakapo and probably solved the DE position for a long time! and still drafted an Offensive Lineman with one of their 3 first picks in rounds 1 and 2. I didn't like any of their picks until Shawn Nelson (TE). I also didn't like the way they handled the Philadelphia trade for J. Peters ! They should have been able to get Philly's 21st pick vice the 28th they got! I don't like any draft where at least 4 of your picks are likely going to shift positions because of different factors such as size or speed etc..... If your going to reach like they did with Levitre for instance then that player shouldn't be drafted to take a step into the unknown of switching positions. He is no lock to be a starter or successful with the switch. If you look at the Bills drafts from the past 5 years or even 7 or 8.

You see a trend of poor overall production and eventually the player often is either out of the league in 3 years or with another team. Reveiw the our draft and you will see just how poor our track record is. The Bills unfortunately try to be cute, and out-think the draft experts! I really believe if you handed me 3 draft magazines, and access to the internet that I could draft better than the Bills management does 9 out of 10 times. So, getting back to the beginning of this I would say without that Aaron Maybin may only be a situational defensive end and will never have the frame to sustain the NFL grind for more than 5 or 6 years tops!

brown lasted until the second. i think the NFL coaching staffs know a lot more than the draftnicks!

No, but more impressive than Syracuse, Temple, and Syracuse ----> alot more. Unfortunately, they are not on the (Bills)schedule this year, although Akron, Temple, Syracuse, and Eastern Illinois somehow found their way back onto those dreaded Nittany Lions schedule.

I hope Maybin is an All-pro and the next Bruce Smith. But this team has been a joke for a decade so excuse me for not having faith in a team that historically, continues to take players before they are projected. They just don't have the resumee to justify having faith in a guy that racked his totals for one year against inferior competition. I was at the Rose Bowl and would encourage anyone to get a tape and watch how a semi-pro team treated Maybin and his "warriors"like a hot knife through butter.

I was more in disagreement with using any stats to show that Maybin was a better player (In college)than Orakpo. Finally, my problem was in them not taking Michael Oher. But, I guess that's why I'm not a GM and the Bills are playoff bound every decade or so.

Michael Oher wasn't a great prospect. You don't get angry at your team for selecting a top 15 prospect over a top 30 one.

It's six of one, half a dozen of another comparing Coastal Carolina, Temple, and Syracuse, with Rice, Arkansas, and UTEP. But Maybin had 7 sacks against Oregon State, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. So to characterize his stats as padded against "inferior competition" is spurious at best.

And again, Maybin was a redshirt sophomore last year, while Orakpo was a redshirt senior. It would be more fair to compare Maybin's season against Orakpo's 2006 season. And it wouldn't be close.
