It would have been beaten by the Sega 2k Sports brand, which had better graphics, animation, and playability. EA bought the exlusive rights from the NFL / NFLPA and eliminated a smaller but better competitor. The Madden franchise hasn't really improved much in almost 10 years. Though apparently this year they are actually trying to fix a lot of the problems this year that have plagued the game year after year without correction. I played some of the Sega 2k football and I see where you're coming from, but I have to say that I did not find the gameplay better than Madden (though it looked better than madden and more true to football) - it was way too easy.
