Put $100 on Oklahoma to win the national championship

I was in Vegas over the weekend for the super bowl & I put $200 down on Oklahoma to win the NCAA Tournament. I put money every year(last year I had Texas) & I never win. This year I think I have a good shot. The best thing is I got them at really good odds. Got them going off at 15:1. I originally wanted Uconn or carolina but Carolina was going off at even & Uconn was going off at only 5:1. Pitt & Duke were going off at 8:1.

OU I think has a reasonable chance at winning the NC. They are currently ranked #2, probably have the best player in the country in Blake Griifin & have pretty solid guard play. I really can not see them losing more then 1 or 2 more games the rest of the regular season(although they almost lost to A&M last night). I really think they have the inside track to a number one seed which for all you people that do not follow the tournament means they are pretty much guaranteed at least a spot in the sweet 16. I know these future bets are sucker bets & I have put one down every year for the last 5 years(although this is the largest amount I have betted. Usually I take a higher odd team & put less down like $25/$30) & have never won but I think this year maybe the year that breaks that streak.

I know college bball on this board is not that popular but imho I think these next 2 months are the most fascinating time of the year in sports when teams jockey for seedings, play themselves onto or off the bubble & the conference tournaments where teams get a clean slate & could make one final run to the big dance. I love this time of year in sports.

Good luck, man. The tourney is a crap-shoot--and you probably have as good a chance as anyone.

I personally think the Big 12 for probably the last decade has been overrated and thus exposed come tournament time. I can't even remember the last time a Big 12 won a championship (Kansas in 1988?).

If I were a betting man, I'd go with a team from either the Big East or ACC (UConn or Duke?).

Kansas won it last year. But I hear ya, I really do not think they are in the class of the Big East or the ACC. It is a suckers bet & like you said anything could happen. Look at Syracuse in 2003, noone had them winning the National Championship as a 3 seed. But they got a real nice draw(playing in Albany) & anybody that watched them that year knew they had the potential with Carmello & Warrick to create matchup problems all over the court.

Oh, yeah, Kansas. :D

It's funny you mentioned Syracuse in 2003; I was going to cite them as an example. You're right-- it's all about the draw. What you're doing--picking a team without seeing they're draw--is incredibly difficult. But it seems like you have the right criteria: (1) superstar player; and (2) great guard play.

(I would add that you need very good defense too to go far in the tournament).

You're right on. It's all about the draw, and what team(s) are hot coming into and throughout the tournament. I'm a huge UNC fan, but I personally think that 15-1 odds on Oklahoma is a great investment. They have undoubtedly the best player in the country IMO in Blake Griffin, other plays like his brother Taylor can also hit the glass, Willie Warren is BY FAR the most underrated freshman in the country (and may be the best when all is said and done), and Austin Johnson can really shoot the ball and doesn't turn it over much either. My concern with them would be depth, but I think the Sooners would easily be a top-3 team in the ACC or Big East as well.

Oklahoma is very strong but has no real depth. I love the tourny. Its is my favorite month of the year leading up too it. Great sports!

The NCAA tournament could quite possibly be the most exciting sports period of the year. I follow college basketball but not religiously like Knockout above, and I love filling out the bracket every year because it gives you a reason to root for teams which make it all the more interesting. I agree that Oklahoma would be a great investment into this year's tourney but truthfully I would be supremely disappointed if they were to win. I really would like UNC to take it all the way this year. :D

How does that work? Do you have a ticket that if OU wins, you send it to the casino and they send you a check? Or do you have to go back to Vegas to claim the prize in person?

I really have missed the ability to gamble on sports since they closed down Bet on Sports and the like......I am sure there are still ones functioning, but I got a little bit scared that the US government would get on its high horse and seize the computer and come down hard on the people who were gambling with these companies. It is the biggest bunch of BS....I should be able to do what I want with my hard earned money and if that means being able to place a wager on a sporting event......so what.

The thing with the way this thing is shaping up there is going to be probably 2 teams that are #2 seeds that are good enough to be one seeds. Obviously noone wants to see UNC or Uconn in their bracket. If they both play to their potential & the brackets are set right that should be your national championship game.

The thing with OU is, due to the fact that the big 12 does not have another legit top 10 team in the conference this year I think as long as they stay the course they are going to be the #1 seed in the midwest. UNC, Uconn, Marquette, Louisville, Duke, Wake Forest, Pitt are all going to beat each other up over the next month. Duke & Wake Forest might of played themselves right into a 2/3 seed discussion last night by getting blown out. I think OU is in the driver's seat for the #1 seed (looking at their schedule) with the other teams mentioned above fighting amongst each other for the other 3 #1s.

Honestly, the government has MUCH more pressing issues that need to be dealt with rather than some guy who is putting $200 of his own money on "________ plus __" on any given night. It's a joke.

I do not know. I really never have had the pleasure of cashing one of these future bets in. On the back of the ticket the language is kinda weird. It says if it is a certain bet that the ticket must be cashed in 120 days after the event(it was a real wierd term they used, never heard it before & I have the ticket at home so I do not remember what the term used was) & then it says all other bets must be cashed in 1 year after the date of the event. Which would not be a problem since I have gone to the super bowl every year there(last 5 years) & plan on going next as long as I still have a job(never know in this economy).

I know friends that go thru offshore sites. You really got to be carefull with these. I have heard stories where your ready to cash out & the government puts a freeze on the money wire coming in & your SOL. The one my buddy goes thru now says he never has had a problem. He uses western union.

last night in Vegas on monday I was up around $300 on the weekend, just mostly hanging out @ the sports book & playing a little blackjack. I decided to put $20 bet on this thing called a round robin. I have heard of it before but never played it. Anyways, I picked 4 teams & inside that round robin they do every kind of bet the combinations will allow.

1st line is 4 straight up single bets on the 4 teams you pick. That cost me $90.

2nd round of bets is every combination of 2 game parlays which were 6 combos. That cost $120

3rd round of bets is every combo of 3 game parlays which there were 4 combos. That cost $80

4th round of bets is the 4 game parlay. Which cost $20. Grand total of the bet was $310.

I took Niagara +1 over Iona, Manhattan + 3 over Marist, Davidson -19 over W Carolina.

The first three came in. So I won $60 on the straight up + my money back from those bets($67.50)

2 game parlay for $20 payed $45 so I won $135 on three 2 gamers I hit + my money back of $60

Hit one combo of the 3 game parlay which payed 6:1 for $120 + my $20 I bet that so I am up $152 after taking off the money I put in ($310).

Win my 4th bet & I walk out of there winning $1,030. My fourth pick which was the late game was none other then g*d d*m Baylor over Kansas -1. :D They got beat by 10. Dumb bet.

I also had $100 on the sabres that night & they lost to aneheim. Ended up winning only $50 for all my troubles.

Yeah, be careful with the offshore stuff. I have an account and see a guy locally to pay or get paid. I am by no means a high profile client but he has told me before a customer of his has won over 100k and was paid the following week. I dont wager those types of #'s but I know of a few guys that have way too much money and time on their hands. I am sure there are guys getting shafted, that why the most I will win or lose in any given time frame is $1000 or so. If I am up I will collect if I am down I will pay could go on for months depending on your "credit line".

Same thing here, I have a credit line of $1000. I had to pay the man $1,200 about 1/2 thru college football season but since then I have my line up to $680. A few more good weeks & I am going to cash out. I do not trust the offshore sites either.

Yep, OU seems like it can control its own destiny for a #1 seed looking at their remaining schedule. The only obstacles left are @Texas, who is very overrated and shouldn't be a big problem, Kansas at home, and IMO the toughest challenge they have left: @ Mizzou. Missouri is a really good basketball team and hasn't gotten enough recognition nationally. They have two forwards in DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons that can really score and a lot of experience in the backcourt. Duke and Wake were both absolutely brutal last night, and they cost me money in doing so :D . Wake had no desire to play any sort of defense, especially on Miami's best scorer McClinton all night, and with that they also had no rhythm offensively and Teague often looked like he was afraid to pull the trigger. Duke plays very good defense most nights, but is a flawed offensive team that relies on Henderson and Singler way too much. They are both good players, but not good enough to handle that type of load. I could see them losing both times to the Tar Heels; away games at Boston College and particularly at Virginia Tech are not going to be a picnic either. Neither of those teams will end up with #1 seeds. You're looking at North Carolina, UConn, Oklahoma, and either Pitt or Louisville getting the four top seeds when all is said and done IMO.

Completely agree on Mizzou, they are my sleeper team in the tournament. As long as they do not totally sh*t the bed last nights win against Texas should cement their spot in the dance. They also have that coach that used to coach UAB. I think he is one of Nolan Richardson's old pupils. They play that uptempo 40 minutes of hell basketball that is going to create alot of matchup problems for teams in the tourney. I had wake last night, thought it was the lock of the night

back in 2000 I was in Vegas and I fired off a drunken 5 game parlay of all underdog money line baseball games....I hit the first 4, but proceded to watch Jose Lima give up about 10 runs in the first 2 innings to blow it all up

I 2nd the idea that the BigXII to me is meh but for those odds sure why not - like JR said they got the stud and the backcourt.

I haven't been following Kenpom ratings as much this year but those sort of metrics (like Football Outsiders) are always good for gambling purposes - they loved Kansas last year (who played much better D than UNC).

As mentioned there's a ton of luck with the draw though.

<3 March Madness btw; I've already decided to take those first 2 days off from work this yr.

I take the 1st two days of the tournament off every year. The thursday I usually meet a couple of the guys up at wild wings for the afternoon games & then take it easy & watch the night games at home. Friday is the big day. I have a march Madness party. I have been doing this ever since I have been married & had my own house. This will be the 8th year. About 10 guys come over. Some come as early as 10:00 am, most stay the day, others pop in during the afternoon games & stay for the night games. We get a keg, everybody will bring a dip or something, I usually throw some burgers & sausage on the grill for the afternoon games & late for the night games I will throw some strip steaks on the grill. It truly is one of the best days of the year for me. My wife hates it & usually takes my credit card & goes on a shopping spree & usually sleeps over her parents house that night.

I've found this to be an interesting blog. Those metrics apparently don't like Oklahoma that much.

How good is OU

I'd agree to be cautious on Oklahoma, mainly because their competition is so weak. I thought we were gonna be ok offensively this year and awesome defensively, but my Horns are looking terrible. No one else in the Big 12 is good either, maybe Baylor, but thats about it.

Yuck.

lol, indeed. I was just kidding with that smile.

If Augustine would of stayed this year Texas would be contending for a NC. Instead, they are going to be fighting for their tournament lives in the next month.

Kansas is a little underrated in the BIG 12. It is tough to tell with Oklahoma. The Big 12 is down this year.
