I have roadrunner. Im getting my daughter a PC for Xmas. Can I use a splitter

and hook up her pc with the same line thats on my computer.

Is her PC going to be located in the same room? If it's not, you'll need to run a cable to wherever your cable modem is located. Another possibility is setting up a wireless network.

 

To do that, you'll need something like this.

And yes - Wireless networking - my professional opinion is "Just say no!"

 

You'll need a router regardless (you can't have two cable modems). All routers use NAT, which is in effect a firewall (sorta).

Naw. I figure all of the insecure people out there will help me -- as the saying (that I think I invented, but may have just picked it up somewhere along the line), "You don't have to have the most secure PC on the 'net, you just need to be more secure than your neighbor." Given the fact that, from my livingroom, I can easily break into five (5!) of my neighbor's wireless networks if I want, I think I'm safe... :)

lets see, right now i have plugged in:

winxp desktop

winxp laptop

linux

win2k

ps2

 

i'll be hooking up another linux box when ups delivers the case and pvr card (setting a homemade tivo B))

 

so thats 6

 

got some old junkers i have sitting around i plug in every once in awhile

friends/relatives sometimes plug laptops in when visiting
