Grade: 68 | Key Alert: None Comment: Walker is gigantic and moves well for his size. He has starting experience at tackle and guard. He has an ideal frame at tackle: great height, very good bulk and long arms. He has the lateral mobility to slide and mirror. He can redirect and recover if beaten. He even can pull from the guard position. His size forces defenders to take an extra step to get around his edge. He is quick enough off the ball and can get to the second level and get position. He is powerful, plays with a very wide base and can engulf defenders off the snap. But Walker is very inconsistent. He takes some plays off and looks bad or disinterested. He catches defenders too often, instead of striking. He sometimes overextends instead of moving his feet. He can be slow to recognize blitzes and stunts. His competitiveness and toughness are concerns. by the way, 68 is in the range of "average starter" which runs from 60-69. A grade of 70 is the low end of "good starter" so, a small reason for optimism? I remember last year all the FA's we picked up were in the "good backup" or "adequate backup" ratings and we were projecting them as starters... for what it's worth... The Raiders will have to move Gallery back to RT, which makes Walker expendable. If he can be had for limited funds -- and is capable of playing adequately, maybe not such a bad deal -- even if he is being relied upon as a starter. If he beats out Pennington and Butler fine, if he beats out Preston or Reyes fine, if not he's a solid 3rd tackle who has experience lining up at TE in jumbo packages. I'm just not feeling the "spend huge dollars on guards vibe" Minnesota tried that and Hutchinson was pretty disappointing, not nearly as good as his massive cap number. We need bodies with Gandy unrestricted and Villarrial gone. We were looing to upgrade already so at minimum we need to replace the two we already lost, if you want to supplant people that's even more people to sign. We only have so many draft picks.
