JP's growing pains

Recommended Posts

food for thought:

jim kelly's rookie year: 22 td, 17 int

Jim would go on to total 19 and 18 interceptions in 4 seperate seasons

troy aikman's first full year as a starter (1990) 11 td, 18 int

payton manning's first year (1998) 26 td, 28 int

2001- 26 td, 23 int

brett favre's 2nd full year as starter (1993) 19 td, 24 int

eli manning's first 25 games as a starter: 26 int, comp.% 51.6%

the point of my post is just to throw out some stat's from some of the greatest qb's to ever play the game along with eli manning who most experts believe is a great up and comming talent. i know that jp will be hung out to dry after throwing a second bad interception in two straight pre season games, but he is doing no worse then the qb's who are mentioned above. this season is going to be his FIRST FULL season (at least i hope) as the starter and he is going to have his growing pains. he may or may not pan out, that remains to be seen. but i think he at least deserves one full season to show that he can progress, learn from his mistakes, and get better with each game. and my gut tells me that you will see marked improvment as the season wears on, especially if you mark the season into four equal, four game 'mini seasons'.

all in all, he has a lot to work on and he is no where near a probowl caliber level right now. however, from watching his action these last two pre season games, it is very clear that he does posess a great amoung of talent for the QB position in both arm strenght, general accuracy, and athletisicm (this part can not be teached). as long as he makes improvemtns in terms of his decision making from week to week this season, i am very happy having him as our starting qb for 2006. a bigger concern to me is the play of the O.line and our secondary and i hold the same standards for those players as i do for jp. i expect the D. as a unit to improve from week to week and quarter to quarter.

the bottom line: for this years team, the sky is the limit. the quicker the team comes together and plays smart, mistake free football, the quicker we will turn the program into a winning organization. it WILL happen.....the question is, how long will it take??

go bills!!!!

FYI: you can find my quarterback stats at http://www.pro-football-reference.com

my appologies for not running spell check, i'm going back to the game!!

I was going to post something similar to this earlier, but on a much smaller scale. I think Donovan McNabb would be a great comparison. I know Donovan is light years ahead right now, but check out the stats from his first year compared to JPs first year playing:

McNabb:

Year G GS Att Comp Pct Yards YPA Lg TD Int Tkld 20+ 40+ Rate

1999 12 6 216 106 49.1 948 4.39 63 8 7 28/204 7 1 60.1

JP:

2005 9 8 228 113 49.6 1340 5.88 58 8 8 26/197 15 6 64.9

You guys have it all wrong here. It isn't about the rookie QB. It's about the running game and defense. JP will lead us nowhere and it's unrealistic to think he will. The rest of the team has to carry us and they've shown they can't.

the D will get better each game and the running game is doing ok so far. how many teams do you know run more then they pass in the preseason?? not many, if any......be positive man!! JP may be asked to do more this season then we think and I for one feel like he is going to be the real deal and that he can carry more of a load if need be......

What's very encouraging about JP so far is that he looks very comfortable in the pocket. We not just seeing glimpses of his strong, accurate arm, he shows it consistently.

And it should only get better when the regular season hits and the Bills have Mcgahee in the backfield full time and more of a running game threat.

Outside of the TD to Price, which was a ridiculously good play, I would argue that his second best pass of the entire game was the incompletion to Evans that Lee couldn't hold. It was put in a great spot, the only place he could have been, on a rope, in between defenders. That was a terrific pass and goes as an incompletion. JP looked pretty good.

He had one like that to Josh Reed in the Cincy game. Hit Reed in a perfect spot about 20-25 yards downfield and Reed couldn't hold it.

His QB rating is close to 90 and I don't think it's a fluke. It could be better.

From the little I've seen, he's shown the ability to bounce ack from a mistake which is encouraging because he IS going to make them. As long as he comes out firing and makes some plays and doesn't hang his head and go all turtle mode I'm ok with some picks here and there.

Marino threw 20+ picks four different times in his career but they were during seasons that he threw 30, 44, 28 and 24 TDs respectively.

Favre has done it five times and he's thrown more INTs than TDs during 3 of those seasons. He's averaged 1.76 TD throws per game and 1.13 interceptions. Throwing out his 2 games in ATL he's averaged over 28 TDs per season and a shade under 16 picks per season.

I'll take the picks, as long as the TDs come too.

Okay I understand what you mean by defense and the running game, I couldn't agree more. Why don't you think that JP can lead this team? His performances over the last 3 weeks have to elicit at least minimal support from his team mates I would think.

On my football team is problem

And that problem is JP

He throw very many passes

But to the other team

Throw JP down the well

So our football team is good

Or he will turn the ball over

And never get it back.

Aside from disagreeing with your post, your poetry is quite poor.

I don't see how anyone can not like the kid seeing this kind of stuff out of him. Yes, he needs to show it on the field and yes in the regular seasons games, and yes it has to translate to wins. But he is looking pretty good, and he has a good head on his shoulders, IMO.

Appears to be an attempt at HaiKu, but I would say a bad one.

It's nowhere near Haiku....

3 sentences of syllables 5,7,5.

He had 2 lots of 4 sentences of 8,7,7,6 & 6,7,8,6

I mean....what is that?
