Underrated, possibly obscure songs

I don't know if anyone else is a fan of 'Five for Fighting', but 'America Town' is one of my favorite albums. Every track is good. One song in particular, "Jordan", may be one of the best songs that nobody's ever heard. It's about a guy who's envy of Michael Jordan is much more intense than he realizes. As the song progresses, the instrumentals coincide with his mindset, and by the end things get really intense. I think the song is brilliant...

That's a good song, but there are better ones on the disc. I just think he writes good lyrics, the songs are well-arranged, with some really strong performances.

That reminds me, I heard there is a new John Mayer Trio disc out.....one of the docs at the hospital I work at recommended it to me. You heard it, by chance?

I know Five For Fighting isn't Candadian (actually from LA)...

Just as Five For Fighting got it's name from the sport of ice hockey... And you mentioned that song... I don't know why... But I think of The Tragically Hip song: Fireworks

Fireworks

If there's a goal that everyone remembers, it was back in ol' 72

We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger

And all I remember is sitting beside you

You said you didn't give a !@#$ about hockey

And I never saw someone say that before

You held my hand and we walked home the long way

You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr

Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished

When the little sensation gets in your way

Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder

Isn't it amazing you can do anything

We hung out together every single moment

Cause that's what we thought married people do

Complete with the grip of artificial chaos

And believe in the country of me and you

Crisis of faith and crisis in the Kremlin

And yeah, we'd heard all that before

It's wintertime, the house is solitude with options

And loosening the grip on a fake cold war

Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished

When the little sensation gets in your way

Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder

Isn't it amazing you can do anything

Next to your comrades in the national fitness program

Caught in some eternal flexed arm hang

Droppin' to the mat in a fit of laughter

Showed no patience, tolerance or restraint

Fireworks exploding in the distance

Temporary towers soar

Fireworks emulatin' heaven

Til there are no stars anymore

Fireworks aiming straight at heaven

Temporary towers soar

Til there are no stars shining up in heaven

Til there are no stars anymore

Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished

When the little sensation gets in your way

Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder

Isn't it amazing you can do anything

This one thing probably never goes away

I think this one thing is always supposed to stay

This one thing doesn?t have to go away

The 80s band kajagoogoo really rocked but they put out their one bad song as a single and it killed their career. They had one really great song called Pathway to Persia. I think it could have been an all time rock classic. Here are the lyrics:

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold

And she's buying a pathway to persia

And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed

With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh

And she's buying a pathway to persia

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure

And you know sometimes words have three meanings

In the tree by the dune there's a songbird who sings

Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh

And she's buying a pathway to persia

There's a feeling I get when I look to the east

And my spirit is crying for leaving

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the sand

And the camels of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh

And she's buying a pathway to persia

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune

Then the persian will lead us to reason

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long

And the desert will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow

Don't be alarmed now

It's just a spring clean for the Persia Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by

but in the long run

There's still time to change the road you're on

Cuz they both lead to persia

Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know

The persian's calling you to join him

Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know

Your pathway lies on the sand storm

And as we wind on down the road

Our shadows taller than our souls

There walks a lady we all know

Who shines white light and wants to show

How everything still turns to gold

And if you listen very hard

The tune will come to you at last

When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll

Woe oh oh oh oh oh

And she's buying a pathway to persia

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold

And she's buying a pathway to persia

And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed

With a word she can get what she came for

And she's buying a pathway to persia, uh uh uh.

That's the one. I'm sure it made them a lot of money but it also killed them.

The bassist, Tony Levin, let his new girlfirend write a song and convinced the band to release it. Richard Wakeman, the keyboardist did not want to release the song and almost qut the band beacuse of it. In the end, it was a two edged sword for them.

I hope the girl was at least hot.

Oh yeah, that's a great album. Bet that sounds awesome on your new speakers, eh? 0:) Their lastest album called "the battle for everything" is not as good but still worth getting. They are also really good live. The lead singer has one of the best voices out there, IMO.

The wife says she nearly cries every time we see the commerical with the song '100 years' in it, where the couple falls in love, has kids, and grows old. Dunno what it's selling, credit cards I think. I tell the wife she's too much of a sentimentalist, though it does seem to get a little dusty around here when it's on...
